MDJ Script/ Top Stories for December 17th Publish Date:  December 17th Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Wednesday, December 17th and Happy Birthday to Eugene Levy I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal ‘History Rocks!’: Sonny Perdue celebrates America’s 250th at Allatoona High Sheriff’s annual Santa On Wheels donates thousands of toys 100+ wreaths placed at veteran tombstones at Kennesaw cemetery Plus, Shane Delancey the Director of the Christmas Tradition at the Strand Theatre All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: INGLES 7 STORY 1: ‘History Rocks!’: Sonny Perdue celebrates America’s 250th at Allatoona High Allatoona High kicked off the buzz for America’s 250th birthday this week with a visit from the U.S. Department of Education’s “History Rocks! Trail to Independence” tour. And yes, former Gov. Sonny Perdue was there, rallying students to think big about the next 250 years. “America doesn’t stay great by accident,” Perdue told the crowd. “It takes work—your work. Education is what keeps democracy alive.” The event wasn’t just speeches. Students played history-themed games like “E Pluribus Unum” and a patriotic spin on “Family Feud.” Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale called it “tremendous,” reminiscing about celebrating the bicentennial as a kid in 1976. Full circle, indeed. STORY 2: Sheriff’s annual Santa On Wheels donates thousands of toys Cobb Sheriff Craig Owens and his team brought some serious holiday magic to Mableton schools on Saturday with their fourth annual Santa On Wheels toy drive. Over 1,600 toys were handed out at Lindley and Floyd middle schools, turning the day into a Christmas wonderland for families in need. “Seeing those kids’ smiles—it’s everything,” Owens said. “Times are tough, but this? This is why we do it.” Owens, dressed as Santa (with Mrs. Claus by his side), posed for photos and handed out gifts, while Christmas music played and kids lined up for presents—and even a chance to win a bike. STORY 3: 100+ wreaths placed at veteran tombstones at Kennesaw cemetery   On a chilly Saturday afternoon, Kennesaw City Cemetery became a quiet, reverent place of remembrance. Volunteers—city officials, Scouts, families—gathered to lay wreaths on the graves of 139 veterans as part of the Wreaths Across America campaign. Each headstone, marked with an American flag, received a wreath. Volunteers paused, saluted, and reflected. “This is Christmas,” said Mayor Derek Easterling, a Navy veteran. “We honor them because they gave everything for our freedom.” For 8-year-old Scout Archer Linscott, it was about tradition. “We’ll be back,” his dad said. “It’s about remembering the past as we move forward.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  We’ll be right back. Break: Villa Rica Wonderland Train STORY 4: Second suspect in Kell High School vandalism case charged, released from custody The second suspect in the Thanksgiving break vandalism at Kell High School has been charged, according to jail records. Hunter Bridges, 18, of Marietta, was arrested last Thursday and released on a $16,720 bond. He and Micah Zefo, 22, of Acworth, allegedly broke into the school on Nov. 24, causing over $12,000 in damage. Police say the pair climbed onto the roof, entered through a hatch, and spent hours inside. They reportedly drove floor scrubbers across the gym’s newly refinished hardwood, leaving deep scratches, and even tampered with school buses. Both face multiple felonies. The district called the behavior “unacceptable.” STORY 5: Cobb 911 earns triple accreditation as center of excellence  Cobb County’s Emergency Communications team just hit a major milestone: triple accreditation from the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED). That’s right—Tri-ACE status. Only 27 agencies in the world have it, and Cobb’s the first county agency in Georgia to pull it off. This recognition means Cobb’s 911 center excels in fire, police, and medical dispatch. It wasn’t easy—earning this required meeting 20 tough accreditation standards and passing expert reviews. “This is the gold standard,” said E911 Director Melissa Alterio. “It’s proof of the incredible work our team does every single day.” Break: STORY 6: Cobb Collaborative, Cobb Community Foundation honor community leaders    The Cobb Collaborative and Cobb Community Foundation came together for the 32nd annual Human Services Awards Luncheon, a heartfelt celebration of the people and organizations transforming lives in Cobb County. “This is about selflessness, innovation, and teamwork,” said Irene Barton, Cobb Collaborative’s executive director. “These honorees remind us what’s possible when we work together to tackle issues like homelessness and food insecurity.” Among the winners: Mark Riggans of Cobb Christmas and Janet Porter of Four Corners Group, honored for their service; Kelsey Thompson-White Battersby, recognized for her housing initiatives; and Kidz2Leaders, awarded $10,000 for breaking cycles of generational incarceration. STORY 7: Navigating Food Allergies During the Holiday Season: What Families Need to Know The holidays are all about food, right? But for families dealing with food allergies, festive treats can feel more like a minefield than a celebration. One wrong bite, and it’s not just a ruined party—it’s a trip to the ER. Over 33 million Americans have food allergies, and anaphylaxis-related emergencies have skyrocketed in recent years. Dr. Joanna Dolgoff says about 1 in 20 kids now has a diagnosed food allergy. Why? Better diagnoses, sure, but also changes in diet, environment, and how kids’ immune systems develop. Feeling overwhelmed? Totally normal. Start small: communicate, read labels, pack safe snacks, and always—always—carry epinephrine. Now, here is Shane Delancey the Director of the Christmas Tradition at the Strand Theatre Break: THE STRAND HOLIDAY Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for October 15th Publish Date:  October 15th Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Wednesday, October 15th and Happy Birthday to Mario Puzzo I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Commissioners to appoint Ferrell police chief Oct 28 Popular cotton candy food truck opens first location in downtown Acworth Cobb Elections Board seeks pay raise, citing increased workload All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: INGLES 9 STORY 1: Commissioners to appoint Ferrell police chief Oct 28  The Cobb Board of Commissioners is set to make interim Police Chief James Ferrell’s role permanent on Oct. 28, with a vote followed by his swearing-in. Afterward, Ferrell will meet with community members, the county announced Monday. Ferrell, who stepped in as interim chief after Stuart VanHoozer’s April retirement, has been recommended by County Manager Jackie McMorris. While Chair Lisa Cupid initially considered Erika Shields, former Atlanta and Louisville police chief, as a candidate, the focus has shifted to Ferrell. Support for Ferrell is strong, with Commissioner Keli Gambrill and the Georgia Fraternal Order of Police backing his appointment. STORY 2: Popular cotton candy food truck opens first location in downtown Acworth After years of spinning sugar on the go, Gimme That Sugar has finally found a home. Lynn and Phil Lafferty, the couple behind the beloved cotton candy business, just opened their first storefront in Acworth on South Main Street. What started as a pandemic project—a tiny cart, a dream, and a lot of trial and error—has grown into a local favorite. “We had no idea people would love fresh cotton candy this much,” Lynn said. The shop serves their signature spun-to-order cotton candy (on glow sticks, if you’re feeling fancy), plus shaved ice, milkshakes, and more. “It’s surreal,” Lynn added. “A childhood dream come true.” STORY 3: Cobb Elections Board seeks pay raise, citing increased workload   The Cobb County Board of Elections is asking for a big pay bump—over 200%—citing the growing workload and expectations placed on its members. Right now, the board chair gets $200 a month, and members get $150. That’s it. Those rates haven’t changed since the early ’90s, back when meetings were short and infrequent. Now? They’re meeting two or three times a month, often for hours, plus prep work, state meetings, and more. The board wants $600 monthly for the chair and $500 for members. Some commissioners agree a raise is overdue but think the jump might be too steep. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  We’ll be right back. Break: COBB FALL FESTIVAL STORY 4: Sheriff’s office donates sneakers to middle schoolers  The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with No Bull Apparel on Oct. 8 to deliver nearly 100 pairs of sneakers to students at three Cobb middle schools—Garrett, Lindley, and Pearson. Chief Deputy Rhonda Anderson and other CCSO leaders personally handed over the shoes, a gesture aimed at supporting kids who need it most. “It’s about more than sneakers,” one official said. “It’s about showing these students we care.” The sheriff’s office thanked No Bull Apparel for stepping up and investing in Cobb’s youth, calling the partnership a meaningful way to build community and promote wellness. STORY 5: Marjorie Taylor Greene sounds alarm over expiring health care subsidies as shutdown continues As the government shutdown drags on, Georgia’s congressional delegation is locked in a messy blame game. Then there’s Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene—doing her own thing. She’s breaking with her party, slamming both sides over skyrocketing health care costs. “I’m carving my own lane,” she posted online, saying premium hikes will hit her kids and her Northwest Georgia constituents hard. Meanwhile, Democrats and Republicans are at each other’s throats. Democrats blame GOP leadership for the shutdown, while Republicans insist it’s not about health care—it’s about funding the government. And the health care crisis? Still looming, unresolved, and deeply personal for Georgians. Break: STORY 6: Square Threads owner Boozer McClure leads fundraising in Ward 3 bid    Local business owner Boozer McClure has taken the lead in fundraising for the three-way race to replace retiring Ward 3 Councilman Johnny Walker. McClure, who owns Square Threads on Marietta Square, has raised $30,000, outpacing city planner Daniel Gaddis ($26,000) and retired educator Nora Gaudet ($12,500, including loans). Despite raising the most, McClure has spent less than his opponents, leaving him with over $21,000 in the bank. His donors include attorneys, developers, and local restaurateurs, with notable contributions from The Barnes Law Group ($2,500) and Mac’s Chophouse owner Randy McCray ($1,000). Election Day is Nov. 4. STORY 7: Chalktoberfest’s 13th year draws thousands of guests, 100 artists Chalktoberfest took over Marietta Square last weekend, and honestly? It was pure magic. Streets became canvases, with 100 artists from all over—Italy, Mexico, Ukraine—turning pavement into masterpieces. “It’s like the Super Bowl of chalk art,” said Erika Thurkins, who’s been coming for seven years. This time, she drew Jane Goodall, calling her a “huge inspiration.” Meanwhile, Heather Cap brought the ’80s back with a portrait of John Candy as Barf from Spaceballs. “It’s silly, it’s nostalgic—it’s perfect,” she said. The art? Temporary. But that’s the beauty—it’s here, then gone. We’ll have closing comments after this. DT: STRING THEORY / TELEVISION AND KALEIDOSCOPEThe guitar as we know it has had an illustrious evolution, starting its journey in ancient Mesopotamia, then finding its earliest recognizable incarnation 5 centuries ago in Spain, and continuing to move through various cultures until blossoming into its electric manifestation in the modern era. It was the magic wand to the baby boom generation - suddenly, everybody had to have one to express themselves, along with a garage band with whom to practice their 3 chord fantasies. Then, there were the transcendental wizards who blazed trails of such sonic originality that the instrument's sound never got boring. Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck, to name a couple. Most of them were firmly rooted in the blues form. Today we feature two bands (Television and Kaleidoscope) whose unique recorded output, though small, blew minds with their sublime, far-reaching soundscapes - reaching deeply into themselves, and searching widely for other cultural inspirations to make original music no 60s/70s rocker teens had even heard before. KALEIDOSCOPEDavid Lindley merged his folk cred with Solomon Feldhouse who brought a middle eastern sensibility to the mix, and they struck world-fusion-rock gold. Lindley started off as a banjo picker, but could play anything with strings, and Feldhouse, a Flamenco artist who had grown up in Turkey, was giggling as an accompanist for belly dancers. Theirs was an unlikely,  but unimpeachable partnership. In this cut from their 1967 debut album, Side Trips, the boys take us on a magical mystery tour through the sanctum of the Egyptian Gardens, where Oud riffs twirl madly through the perfumed air, and scantily clad dancers hypnotize us with their charms. TELEVISIONPunk music was completely democratic. It was said that you didn't have to have chops to play; all you needed was passion. Not so with Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd's band Television. Their debut album, 1977's Marquee Moon immediately splintered that myth. The two virtuoso guitarist's method of meshing their sound together threw down the gauntlet to any aspiring duelists, and their achievement remains unparalleled, and unchallenged. It was an intellectual approach heretofore unseen in CBGBs, and the other dives of the lower east side. There was a jazz-like, improvisational element at work, and in the record's eponymous cut, Marquee Moon, you can hear Verlaine and Lloyd spur each other on to increasingly ecstatic heights.

It might seem daunting to avoid the tyrannical grasp of the dystopian biomedical terrorists, but it is in our power to preserve medical freedom in red states. We're joined today by Texas family physician Dr. Kat Lindley, who is sounding the alarm about the upcoming WHO amendment to the International Health Regulations. In May, the WHO might vote to adopt policies that create “one health,” which will synergize control over our lives – not just for viruses but anything officials deem as a threat to public quality of life. Dr. Lindley is leading the effort in the states to pre-emptively ban such health regulations. We must get active and ensure that red-state and county health departments are not promoting the “one health" agenda, because a lot of them are already doing so.  Learn more about your ad choices.
