Zach Stone's life arc runs from teenage “knucklehead” to crisis negotiator, trauma-informed facilitator, and head-of-product for thirty health-ed dev teams. In this rich, funny, and occasionally hair-raising conversation we drill down into the how of navigating chaos — on a subway platform, in a corporate boardroom, and inside your own nervous system.Trigger warning: there's a conversation about suicide at about 15 minutes into the episode. Skip to minute 17 if you want to avoid this section. Here's a tasting menu of our conversation:Gang manuals & purple binders – How a Quaker-adjacent conflict resolution course turned a 15-year-old troublemaker into a group dynamics geek. From union hall to board hall – Lessons learned refereeing SEPTA labor fights and why the same “rubber-and-glue” listening works on Zoom stand-ups.OARS in rough water – Using Motivational Interviewing (Open questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summaries) to defuse rage, whether from a bus driver or the voice in your own head.Simulated danger, real breakthroughs – How well-designed role-plays can heal trauma if you hold the container (and what happens when a participant suddenly starts to undress).Signs you're in a chaotic system – Chronic absenteeism, cortisol tummy, “my work doesn't matter” syndrome, and 70% burnout in tech.Habit > culture – A shout-out to Paul Gibbons, Prochaska & DiClemente, and the myth of top-down culture change.Martial arts as somatic therapy – TaeKwonDo to Muay Thai to boxing; what Zach saw when veterans laid down their canes and kids in shelters stopped fighting.Virtual heartbreak – Coaching a Kharkiv dev team while missiles shook their bomb shelter.Chaos surfing 101 – Why you don't control chaos, you ride it; plus simple team-level practices to build collective resilience.TakeawaysName the elephant first. Bombarding parents or colleagues with information can shut down meaningful dialogue. Instead, Dr. Monica Gilbert shares how we can use Motivational Interviewing (MI) to foster collaboration and encourage change through using the core principles—OARS + I:Open-Ended Questions—Invite Discussion: "How do you see this working for you?"Affirmations—Reinforce strengths: "I see how much you care about this."Reflective Listening—Show understanding by paraphrasing their thoughts.Summarization—Clarify key points to ensure alignment.Information Exchange—Share insights in a way that invites engagement: "Would it help if I shared some strategies?"Using motivational interviewing keeps conversations about change productive, builds trust, and supports meaningful discussions across all professional dialogue with parents and colleagues. #autism #speechtherapyWhat's Inside:What is Motivational Interviewing? How open ended questions can build rapport and gather informationUsing Affirmations in professional dialogueMentioned In This Episode:Dr. Monica GilbertMotivational Interviewing Academy Membership - ABA Speech ABA Speech: Home
In manufacturing, we're all familiar with stress. But did you know that a lack of challenges and too much comfort can also have a negative impact on your health, mindset, and productivity? This is the core concept Paul Taylor presents in his great book Death by Comfort: How Modern Life is Killing Us and What We Can Do About It. As a former British Royal Navy crew member and a current Ph.D. candidate in applied psychology, Paul has in-depth knowledge about stress, resilience, and performance. In this episode on stress, comfort, and psychological safety, Paul draws from his own experiences and research to delve deeper into why discomfort and challenging situations build confidence and resilience, plus shares some of his favorite methods for rethinking how you perceive stress and engage with your team. 2:20 – In manufacturing, stress can be inevitable, so you need to find the right level of stress in your environment 3:36 - You can use principles from physical fitness and apply them to stress management 7:11 – To stay healthy and keep a productive mindset, you need to balance stress and recovery 11:54 – When you practice self-efficacy and do hard tasks, it builds your confidence 16:21 – Uncomfortable yet necessary conversations play a key role in workplace environments 17:38 – To change and improve how you give feedback and have challenging conversations, use the SBI (situation-behavior-impact) model 18:36 – Use the OARS model for motivational interviewing to encourage open questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing 24:58 – Take time to understand your purpose and the impact of your work 24:58 – Don't overlook the role of accountability in psychological safety Connect with Paul Taylor Visit his website Listen to The Paul Taylor Podcast Buy Death by Comfort on Amazon or at your favorite bookseller Read my book report on Death by Comfort

It's been a quiet year for Broken Oars Podcast in podcast terms. While life happened, we only managed to interview the world's best sports physiologist, the world's best sports psychologist, the man who created the on / off test for EPO and ... SIR MATTHEW PINSENT! And yet, it's the End of the Island that's been nominated for best rowing podcast - probably because we didn't get 'round to nominating ourselves. Go on Fergus! As we approach Christmas, we should understand that it can be a hard time of year for many (rowers). We get it. The summer regattas seem a long way away. The test regimen is currently brutal. The mileage is high. The weather and the water cold, and bow won't stop dragging their fxcking hands. And in times like this it's always wise to remember the words of good St. Hodge. And so with this in mind, the Northern One again reads The Night Before Christmas (for Rowers) - live from Kings. Get some!

What's the episode about? In this episode, hear live recordings and interviews from the DEATHxDESIGNxCULTURE conference at Falmouth University in September 2024. The episode features discussion of death, culture, older age rational suicide (OARS), film, design, grief, knitting, jewellery and memento mori, material culture, museums, and memorial reefs What was DEATHxDESIGNxCULTURE? DEATHxDESIGNxCULTURE: Radical Re-Imagining for the End of Life brought together an interdisciplinary group of researchers, practitioners, and designers to critically explore the role of design in relation to death and dying. With a strong focus on interdisciplinarity, the event facilitated knowledge exchange between experts in social sciences, the humanities, and various design fields. Contributions came from a diverse range of areas, including graphic design, architecture, digital design, fashion design, and product design, highlighting the versatility and expansive nature of design in addressing issues of mortality. The event was organised by Falmouth University senior lecturers Dr Robyn Cook, Nikki Salkeld and Ashley Rudolph in partnership with the Death and Culture Network at the University of York (UK), Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan (USA), and the Glasgow End of Life Studies Group at the University of Glasgow (UK). The Northern One releases an album of solo pieces perfect for meditating, journeying, breathwork, or just, you know ... listening to. ‘Test Pieces features six pieces of music written for people and places I was missing during lockdown, recorded with those people and in those places once it was lifted. Track Listing Charlotte the Brave and Larissa the Bold Flatpicker / Sam Bacon's Blues Resolution Cascade A Deep Sea Diver's Blues Stumpy and The Bear (Will You Not Come Back?) (©℗ A. I. Jackson 2024) When I lived in Sheffield I got very interested in climbing, its artistry and ethics. A Test Piece is the title given to a climbing line that shows you where you are up to in your journey as a climber. Like a musical line, a climbing line is also an expression of the imagination and ability of the climber who first puts up the route. The lines in Test Pieces reflect my musical imagination and where I was in my life when they were written and recorded. Like a climb, each piece features a crux - this is usually the most difficult move, emotional moment, or technical challenge that connects the line. The album was recorded using climbing ethics: onsite, in one pass, with no rehearsal of moves ahead of time. This made recording challenging, both the in situ parts and the final production where each piece is contextualised by moments of what was happening around the recording, and insights from people like Johnny Dawes on the links between creativity, performance and personality. Released as the companion piece to Songs For Separation in November 2024, to find out more about Test Pieces writing, production and release go to Origin(al) Stories. After a week away in the North Yorkshire Dales recuperating, your favourite Northen One returns with part three of this autumn's deep dive into art, paintings and songs about poo. In this episode, we'll talk and learn all about how William Frith's work spawned a craze for 'representative' scenes of modern life, why the term post-modernism is adolescently arsy, pictures as 'texts' to be read, and the commercial possibilities that occur when the 'vulgar mob' (F.W. Fairholt) sees itself positively expressed in your work - which is why critics don't know what they're talking about, Oasis sold more than Blur, and the sound of the sixties wasn't Dylan but Helen Shapiro and Englebert Humperdinck. We touch on Victorian hypocrisy by noting that all ages are caught between their public faces and private actions, point out that all children are legitimate, mention Harry Clasper again, and come to the birth of the cities that still inform our view of Britain. And Mancunian exhibitionism. There's no exhibitionist like a Mancunian exhibitionist. Look up Frith's The Railway Station (1862), Many Happy Returns of The Day (1856), and For Better, For Worse (1880), George Elgar Hicks' The General Post Office, One Minute To Six (1860), and William Logsdail's The Bank and the Royal Exchange (1887). Take notes. And buy us a coffee.
We are here and ready to roll for the wrap up of the Moria and Oars fights. We are ready to take a breath now. Wait....Nope! Kuma is here and he is wreaking havoc on on an already demolished crew. His motives remain a mystery outside of just following orders, but let's worry about that later after the straw hats find a way to beat this monster. Next Week: Episodes 377-379
We are back with the straw hats stepping up against Oars in all of his glory. The time for fun is over. Robin is not having it with these shenanigans. They do need to figure something out quick though because our favorite pirates are beginning to drop like flies. Next Week: Episodes 372-376
After six months of training, Steady State Network's Allies with Oars' first coastal – and first international – race is a wrap! Two Allies With Oars mixed 4x+ crews spent the better part of Aug. 25, 2024 circumnavigating an 88k course around Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, for Race Around the Rock, hosted by Salt Spring Island Rowing Club. We got a little bit of everything: flat water, rolling waves, eddies, boat wakes, seals, massive jellyfish, excitement at the start line, confidence, pain cave suffering, and elation at the finish line. Post-race, and with beverages in hand, the team sat down together to relive some highlights (and low lights) and share what made the experience so meaningful. Thanks to all our family and friends for volunteering to lend a hand throughout race weekend. We couldn't have made it around this rock without you. It's your favorite Northern One, coming back with episode two of our deep dive into how artistic representation began to change and why. In this episode, we sing songs about badgers; and the Northern One goes back to the early Victorian period to look at how the invention of the daguerreotype triggered an artistic revolution: when artists no longer had to strive for photorealism (because a photograph could be taken), they began to move from representing the rich and powerful to capturing and intensifying the world around them. For the first time, plebs appeared in art! And hookers! And pickpockets! And poor people! To follow along, please look up Edward Frith's Ramsgate Sands and Derby Darby day; Cruikshank's London Comes to Town; and Rodgers, Hammerstein, Hart, Gilbert and Sullivan's celebrated South Sea Badgers musical. Fact. Buy us a coffee - and we'll stop doing this stuff. Maybe.
When Jesus sent the disciples to the other side of the sea, they encountered a great storm. Though Jesus was on a mountain praying and the disciples were a long distance from land, He saw them, He came to them, He got in their boat and He calmed the storm. Wherever you are today, Jesus sees you when nobody else does. He comes to all of us and for those willing to receive Him into the boat, He will calm your storm and save your life.

Hullo, Can't sleep? Me neither. The Northern One returns with a follow-up to last year's Summer Shorts series. Inspired by a chat with a medical friend about the advances in technology in their career, your favourite Northern Monkey takes a spin through representative art, and representation in art, and how it evolved in the nineteenth century in response to the new. Starting off with one of the nation's favourite paintings, Turner's The Fighting Temeraire, he reclaims it for all Northern Monkeys. Like this pod? Stand us a coffee. x

Did you miss us? Of course you did! We're back with Robin Parisotto, the scientist behind the on / off EPO test to discuss the history of doping in sport, why testing regimens are set up to show there is a testing regimen rather than to create clean sports, and why clean sport will never happen in the current systems. Apart from British rowers. We're clean. Get some! Bowside? Do some work. Strokeside are fixing their mascara. Again.

After the glory and the dream that was our crowing achievement (talking to Sir Matthew Pinsent), Aaron and Lewin return in typical Broken Oars fashion. That's right. We watch Olympic races and talk about them as they're happening and then post the episode after the Olympics has finished, but before the Para Games begins. Oh, and it looks like Podbean took all of our episodes down and dumped them back on the stream so it looks like we were really busy on the 9th August. Apologies, but look at all of the goodness you've missed in the last four years!

In 1984, Kris Thorsness brought home gold in the U.S. women's 8+ from the Olympic Games Los Angeles. Home was Alaska, where she was welcomed with a parade and the distinction of being the first Alaskan to win an Olympic medal. Today she says she's “just a masters rower,” but 40 years after that gold medal Olympic performance, she's also a USRowing Referee and is an Arbitrator for the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the U.S. and Paralympic Committee. Mis-timing the catch causes the boat to slow down. You can go faster for no extra effort. Timestamps These three things are super-easy to correct and take no extra fitness and effort. So important for masters to enjoy our rowing and so "speed for free" is great for us. 01:45 Putting the oar in the water at the wrong moment. Roll forward to full compression - there's a micro second when the seat is stationary. This is the moment when you want the oars already under the water. Too early - means you miss the opportunity to use all your leg drive. Too late - means you aren't at full slide; you waste leg drive because you're pushing air not water, and the bows are not at their highest. 03:50 The boat tilts longitudinally during the stroke At the bows' high point you are generally at full slide and closest to the stern of the boat. This is when you want to place the oars into the water. 04:50 The cure starts at the finish Get the set-up correct - refer to our earlier episode about Speed Murdering Mistake #2 The Finish. - Be prepared early for the catch. - Oars need to be square before you change direction on the slide,. - Have as few body movements as possible while sliding. - Instability compromises catch timing - Loose legs on the recovery creates poise and control during the sliding and means you are doing less - Sequence off the back (finish) arms - body - legs bend last. 08:30 Ensure you correctly understand the recovery You should not roll fully forwards before squaring. This movement needs to be earlier in the recovery. 09:15 What to do differently 1 - Look at your knees. They are at their highest at full slide and full compression. 2 - Listen for a moment of silence when the seat wheels stop moving. That's when the seat changes direction - that gives you an auditory timing point to place your catch 3 - Be active with your placement. Make a definite, active movement to place the oars under the water. Try pushing your handles away from you as a drill to practice this using your thumbs at 90 degrees along the oar handles to emphasise the pushing movement.
Twenty years after meeting as high school athletes, long time friends Stephen Pryor and Justin Knust are coaching in studio, online, and on the water, as the data-driven founders of Live2Row Studios. While hauling regatta trailers and drinking beers in bars, Stephen and Justin realized that the coaching and training system they'd been developing for youth rowers could be valuable for the larger rowing community. In 2015, they opened the doors to Live2Row Studios in Ocoee, FL, and pivoted during COVID to offer live on-line training. Today, their growing coaching staff uses ErgZone's powerful metrics to provide personalized benchmarks and they are devoted to making a difference for the rowing community. What changes are needed when doing big or small boats - length / inboard. Timestamps 01:00 It's all about gearing. How long are your oars and what is the ratio for the outboard to the inboard? Small boats versus large boats. You have to carry your share of the total mass of the hull, riggers and oars. In a single scull you are carrying around 14-17kg. As the boat gets bigger, you carry less mass because it's shared between more people. If you have a bigger boat - you can afford a heavier gearing on the oars. Coaches try to give each athlete a consistent load to move the boat so you don't have to work a lot harder in small boats compared to big boats. They adjust the rigging to make this broadly consistent. 03:00 So you should be able to rate a similar strokes per minute almost regardless of which boat type you are rowing in. Generally people rate higher in larger boats. 03:50 The span and spread affects the load. Last week we reviewed the arc through which the oar tip moves each stroke. You want a wider span on a smaller boat (single = 160 cm) but in a quad it may be tighter 159 cm. Sweep spread is measured from the mid point of the hull out to the pin and these will be wider for smaller boats. 05:15 The oar length You have to be strong enough to move the oar past the fulcum. A 1k race is around 100 strokes and you need to be able to deliver each stroke to a similar power. Sculling oar lengths - sculls will be set at a length of 287 - 288 cm long Sweep 370-374 cm. These rigs are what you expect for younger rowers.... and oars get passed around the club and the lengths aren't changed. 07:20 Jim Dreher invented the adjustable length oar - the story behind the invention. 10:00 Load on the body from the blade Masters are a hugely divergent age and strength group of athletes. Increase the load for younger masters, tailwinds and for beginners. Decrease the load for older athletes or it's a headwind. The more experienced are more dextrous and can cope with a higher load and can rate higher. You have to be able to put the oar in the water at the same speed the boat is moving past that part of water. 13:00 Rig your own boat to suit you How long are your oars and span/spread? How old are you, how fit are you? Rigging for Masters webinar - Volker Nolte has a detailed chart for oar lengths and span/spread for masters. He considers most masters to row on much too heavy a gearing. https://fastermastersrowing.com/rigging/ If you are older you probably want to decrease your load. When buying oars and sculls the spoon size and shaft weight / flexibility are different options you can choose, Cut an oar shaft in half - the internal diameter isn't spherical - there are more layers of carbon on the front and back edge. This gives more or less rigidity / flex to the oar shaft. The tensional stiffness in the shaft comes from the thicker carbon which is on the front / back of the shaft facing the direction of travel when the oar is square in the water. Buy the webinar and get Volker's oar and scull charts. https://fastermastersrowing.com/rigging/ Want easy live streams like this? Instant broadcasts to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn. This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where we answer submitted questions and talk all things whitewater. Topics and links that Zach talked about this episode Wind River Festival Recap GoRafting.com Questions that Zach covered in the Q&A section of this episode Topic: Steve Hello! I'm curious what is Scuba Steve constructed out of? I've been trying to find a good way to simulate an unconscious swimmer. Topic: Best in the West Have you seen the bracket from Oars for the (2nd) Best in the West river trip? I've got my thoughts about the bracket and some of the results. I was curious if you've seen it and what you think of how it's played out? https://www.oars.com/best-in-the-west/? Topic: Watershed Fabric I seem to recall from Gear Garage vids late last year or early this one that you mentioned Watershed Drybags is coming out with a new-and-improved line of drybags with improved/burlier fabric. Any updates on this? I have a Chatooga duffel that I use and really like but also have a Grand Canyon private trip this fall (late October launch from Lee's Ferry) - thinking that a Colorado or Mississippi duffel with enhanced fabric could be just the ticket for my primary dry duffel for that trip and beyond. Thanks much for any insight! A GG member happy to support the channel/podcast and NWRC... Topic: Boat Recommendation I love your knowledgeable videos. Wondering if you care to share your thoughts on a couple boats I am looking at. I've owned a drift boat for two decades and buying my first raft to access more difficult water for Spey fishing away from the crowds. I'm looking at an aire 130R and an aire super duper puma. I most often fish the upper sandy, upper Clackamas, and lower deschutes. Spey fishing is done while wading so not looking for all that fishing crap on my boat. Just a simple NRS big horn frame with an anchor drop. I'll do overnighters on the deschutes but only a couple of nights. I've usually got one or two other people with me, but we take lightweight backpacking gear. I have one more question for you guys that I'd love to hear you explore… comparison of an Aire Tributary 14 vs. Aire 143d. The wireframes on these boats seem similar to me, but I'm a novice. The 143d is ~$2200 more. Weight and width… The Trib is 136#s vs the 143d at 114#s as they have different weight fabrics. The Trib is 6'10 wide vs. 143d at 6'6. Is 6'10 and heavy a big deal? Again I'm trying to create a great boat for an NRS big horn frame to float the upper Sandy, upper Clack and do multi days max to the mouth on the deschutes… Spey fishing. Thank you! Topic: Illinois Shuttle I was wondering how much time needs to budgeted for driving from Kerby, Oregon to the Miami Bar put in. Google maps says 20 miles and about 55 minutes. Is this your experience? Also, on highly unpredictable and fickle drainage, how we looking for flows for late April, early May? Topic: R2 on the MFS I'm going to buy a raft rather than rent one for a MFS trip in early July. I'm torn between the Hyside Mini Max or the Max 12. We are very experienced kayakers and will be packing light, and there will be oar rigs to carry some bigger group stuff if needed. Are the oar rigs going to leave us in the dust? Any thoughts on the MiniMax vs the Max 12? After the one trip down the MFS, the boat will be spending the rest of its life on NC/WV rivers. Thanks
What rig should masters rowing boats and oars use? How can clubs set up their equipment to suit as wide a range of athletes as possible? Timestamps 00:45 I got a pair of mis-matched sculls and so I''m on a rant.... this is easy to improve. Comfort in the boat and ease of use are the most important for rigging club boats. All clubs should have standardised rig across the boat fleet. 02:00 Rigging basics Your rig enables you to move the boat in comfort - your torso and legs. Be able to sit comfortably at the boat in the finish. Look for your shins not hitting the deck, hold the oar so forearm at the same height as the oar shaft and at the catch that you can get your hips through the work - at least hips level with the face of the gate. [If you don't know what this is, buy our Sculling Intensive course and learn how to find work through the pin and ways to adjust to suit your needs.] 03:30 Oarlock height and forearm height are related It's important that your forearms are level with or above the shaft and the oar handle. Otherwise you cannot get weight into the hands as you press the handle down. 04:20 Standardise the boat rig Sculling spread of 159 or 160 cm; seat to heel measurement of 16-18 cm; oars /sculls 286 cm long and 87 cm inboard, maybe longer oars for men or younger athletes. Note the inboards are the same because men/women use the same boats. Sweep rigging span of 84 cm; seat to heel 16-18cm. Oars 370 - 373 cm long. Inboards standardise from 114 for an eight down to 117 for a pair. Put tape on the oars with measurements e.g. 370:114 so it's easy to see what the oar is supposed to be set at. 07:00 Enable quick adjustments for club members Height spacer washers - put one above and one below the oarlock/gate on every boat. So the oarlock sits at the midpoint above the oarlock to saxboard sill height. So you can easily see if the heights have been moved. 08:20 Shoes with adjustable sizes - we bought ours from Ankaa with velcro adjustment around the heels. Also home-made velcro instep straps for ladies to use larger shoes are cheap to make. 09:20 Spacer Placer tool - if you want the lanyard when you buy it, mention Faster Masters Rowing. Buy from Revolution Rowing https://www.revolutionrowing.com/collections/on-the-water/products/spacer-placer-tool 10:00 Oar designs for easy adjustment include Croker's clamp on the button to release and reset the position without needing a screwdriver and tools. Give your rowers autonomy so they can adjust the boat and oars to make them comfortable for their needs. Want easy live streams like this? Instant broadcasts to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn. Abortion information, policies, and access is always changing. Ariella Messing, founder and Executive Director of the Online Abortion Resource Squad (OARS), sits down to talk with us about the r/abortion subreddit, a landscape of constantly shifting information, and navigating abortion mis- and disinformation on the internet. The Online Abortion Resource Squad was born of a Slack channel and has since shifted to run the abortion subreddit, r/abortion. OARS has provided information throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, after the passage of Texas's SB8, and after the Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. Volunteers, including moderator volunteers who are on for 12-hours a day, undergo intensive training and point those seeking assistance on r/abortion towards information and resources. 0:00 -- Intro.1:14-- About this podcast's sponsor: The American College of Governance Counsel.2:09 -- Start of interview.2:41 -- Abby's "origin story." 4:11 -- Her time at Hambrecht & Quist. Distinctions between IPO market in the 1990s and the current environment. Her time as a CEO of a venture-backed e-commerce company. Her time at Russell Reynolds (7 years).10:36 -- The history, mission and current focus of her company Boardspan, founded in 2014. "To help boards succeed." "[The focus is a mixture of] a traditional service business [board recruiting] and a very modern brand new IT business, around assessments and information gathering and marry those two." "And I think that was the hardest part quite honestly, is how you marry both the service and a software business and deliver both at the same time."14:24 -- On high performing boards and board culture."We developed a framework to talk about high -performing boards. [It is] really simple. I call it OARS, which is like rowing a boat, just to make it easy for people to remember. 'O' stands for oversight, 'A', accountability, 'R' is risk mitigation, and 'S' is strategy.""We all know that board work is a team sport. So, if board members are not aligned, it's really hard for them to do their work. It's not an individual sport and everybody knows that."17:24 -- Differences in board dynamics between public and private (venture-backed) boards.23:28 -- On the importance of board committees. "Committees are where the vast majority of the board's work is done, and they're really important. I often refer to them as the workhorses of the board.""I just want to remind your listeners that committees don't make decisions. They make recommendations when it comes to the major actions. And so it's not that control is transferred to a committee, it's the leaning on them, the leverage, the expertise that is transferred.""If a board member really wants to have influence on a particular issue that a committee is undertaking, then join the committee, don't discount their value to the board."26:42 -- On board evaluations. "[W]e are big believers in having objective data. Now, objective data can be quantitative and qualitative, but you still want that objectivity as a way to sort of lead you onto a path of growth. So we like the number side because it helps put a stake in the ground. You can measure progress and critically, you can benchmark to peers, which is something that we find and hear back from our clients is absolutely invaluable." "We have found the act of doing an evaluation with a third party is the biggest step forward."30:48 -- On the Board/CEO relationship. "It's the most important relationship of all. And personally, I'm not a believer that the board's job is simply to hire and fire the CEO. I think that's, in all due respect, an old school perspective."34:25 -- On the role of the Chair or Lead Independent Director. "The role of the chair, independent chair or lead independent is critical. And that's true whether it's a large public company, a small private company and everything in between, because they're often in that role of helping to facilitate the board's contributions, the board's role." "Figuring out where's the line and how [the board can] add value, that tone gets set by the partnership between the CEO and the chair."36:53 -- On CEOs moving to Chairman role. "It is really hard for people to take off one hat and put the other one on. So it really has to be discussed."40:02 -- On the evolution of boardroom diversity. "Another metaphor I often use for boards are tapestries, meaning that you're kind of weaving together different threads. I referred to the team sport earlier, but perhaps the better metaphor really is it's a small symphony, not a big one, but a relatively small symphony where you're bringing different skills, perspectives and ways that board members can contribute that makes the group as a whole stronger. And back to our prior conversation about board chairs, they're the conductor of that symphony and that's an invaluable role. But it doesn't mean that that conductor or any one other person who plays the violin is a great percussionist or a great woodwind or something like that. So it's about bringing all of these together. We've made a lot of progress in board diversity."43:04 -- Abby's take on ESG and the ESG backlash ("green hushing").45:59 -- On the question of single issue directors from a board composition perspective. "[Y]ou and your listeners are well aware of the QFE requirement to have a qualified financial expert. I do believe that at some point we're gonna see those requirements in other areas. Now, cybersecurity might be one of the first ones where we see a "QCSE" requirement." "I think people need to remember that a good board member grows with the board [...] and they can grow and figure out how to contribute in other ways."49:45 -- On geopolitics in the boardroom. "We use a really simple model with our clients and it's based on concentric circles. And at the very center is management's expertise. If this is an existential issue, if you're doing the vast majority of your production in China or getting resources from China. [I]f your business's success is dependent on that, then you should have the expertise at the management level. It needs to be on there. The level of the board's knowledge that's required is influenced by how critical of an issue is it."51:30 -- On impact of AI in the boardroom. "People are sort of trying to figure out how to stay current, knowing that what is current next week probably wasn't current this week. I kind of liken it to everything, everywhere, all at once."53:04 -- Books that have greatly influenced her life: Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner (1987)The Prophet by Khalil Gibran (1923)Everything by Jane Austen53:56 -- Her mentors: the late Dan Case (H&Q), Christina Morgan (formerly with H&Q and JP Morgan) and current mentor is Mary Cranston (featured in E80 of this podcast)54:49 -- Quotes that she thinks of often or lives her life by: "I often get asked by people for career advice. And so I will share what I share with everybody which is: like what you do, like who you do it with, and feel fairly rewarded by that work."55:12 -- An unusual habit or absurd thing that she loves.55:50 -- The living person she most admires: Barack Obama. "My fantasy dinner table has both of Obama and Bruce Springsteen joining me."Abby Adlerman is the CEO and founder of Boardspan, a provider of digital governance solutions for boards across all sectors.__This podcast is sponsored by the American College of Governance Counsel.__ You can follow Evan on social media at:Twitter: @evanepsteinLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/epsteinevan/ Substack: https://evanepstein.substack.com/__You can join as a Patron of the Boardroom Governance Podcast at:Patreon: patreon.com/BoardroomGovernancePod__Music/Soundtrack (found via Free Music Archive): Seeing The Future by Dexter Britain is licensed under a Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License
In this episode, we had the chance to sit down at Float Alabama with First Sergeant Rowell Guevarra and Sergeant Christopher Murphy after a long day of fishing on the Tallapoosa River. We discussed what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning as well as the many ways these men give of their time to make the lives of others better. These men have served their country well by their time in the military and continue to serve men and women with their gifts of hospitality by providing memorable experiences on the water. We wanted to honor these veterans this week where we recognize Veterans Day and we hope you will as well by supporting their philanthropic efforts. Dr. Callie Plattner joins me in Session 236 to talk about her work in the area of Motivational Interviewing. Callie is the Vice President of Clinical Operations at Mosaic Pediatric Therapy, and happens to be a fellow Auburn grad (War Eagle!). Now longtime listeners will know that we've covered MI on the podcast before. Back in Session 158, my friend Dr. Jim Murphy, who incidentally also happens to be an Auburn grad, discussed MI in the context of helping young adults reduce binge drinking and other substance-related problems. Also, my good friend and colleague, Dr. Paulie Gavoni, has been talking about MI for years. In fact, he's in the process of developing a course on this topic for the project that Paulie and I, along with our colleague Anika Costa, have been working on called The Behavioral Toolbox (brace yourselves for hearing a lot more about this coming up ;-). This background aside, in this episode, Callie gives an overview of what exactly Motivational Interviewing is, and defines the four "micro-skills" of asking Open-Ended questions, providing Affirmations, Reflecting, and Summarizing... the so-called "OARS" skills. Callie then discusses the research she's conducted with Dr. Cynthia Anderson, which will be coming out soon in Behavior Analysis in Practice, and more generally talks about how MI can be an effective tool to build rapport with stakeholders and possibly improve things like staff and parent adherence to behavior plans, therapy attendance, and so on. Brendan is at the beach with family, covered in sand and Oars & Alps sunscreen, and looking for a break from the “vacation.” And Andy is ebullient about getting a new couch. So this is a punchy episode on a range of subjects -- the field list at the 3M Open including the scion of a Dockers enthusiast, as well as some bigger names grinding to make an improved playoffs cutoff. That includes Justin Thomas, who is covered in some detail vis-a-vis the Ryder Cup. The two majors, the Senior Open and Evian, are also covered tersely with some critique for Champions Tour golf given Steve Stricker and Stew Cink are just no-showing. The U.S. Junior is given “ECCO event of the week,” with some questions about what actually constitutes a “junior” given that some full-blown college players are in the field. There's also an “All-Name Team” from that event. There's a lot of yelling about a little Courier Cup points bylaw that has jammed Akshay Bhatia from being in a proper spot on the points list. News hits on a report that the much-hyped 17th hole at Royal Liverpool, “Wee Eye,” will be “blown up” and made much fairer.
