The second instalment of Shirley Robertson's chat with sailing legend, Ken Read. The pair continue their discussions following on from an illuminating Part 1 which saw Read discuss his role as President of commercial sailing behemoth North Sails, and his America's Cup campaigns with US sailing all star Dennis Connor. In this edition the chat gains momentum, as the stories continue to flow. Read's easy going style make him a delight to listen to as he reveals how he was lured into a Volvo Ocean Race campaign mid race back in the 2005-2006 edition of the famous race. From there, Read goes on to reveal how a chance meeting with the owner of Puma set the ball rolling on what would become one of the Ocean Race's most memorable of entries. For two editions, in 2008-09 and 2011-12 Read was at the helm of the memorable red Volvo entry 'Puma' - and here reveals how both campaigns took shape, and just how close he came to winning one of sailing's most illusive trophies. The thrill of racing the planet over with, Read then discusses what happens when a billionaire sailing fanatic decides to invest in building a boat to smash records. The result was of course the 100ft maxi "Comanche" - the design and build of which was done very much under Read's watch. Once finished the boat was an absolute beast, a head turner wherever she sailed - in fact Robertson was onboard on one of the first forays in big winds on Comanche, a day the pair remember well - Read's tales of charging the Bass Straits in the iconic Sydney to Hobart Race are compelling. The pair wrap up with some thoughts on the future of the sport, chat about the televising of sailing and Read's time on the commentary team of the America's Cup. They then conclude with an honest, heart felt discussion about what sailing has given Read, how much he has invested in it over his life time, and the inevitable personal costs it's brought. It's a compelling listen - an honest and forthright conversation with one of the great communicators of the sport of sailing.

Each year on the day after Christmas, one of the world's most challenging sailing competitions takes place: The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. As I sit on the shores of the harbor waiting for the boats to start their journey, I contemplate the sailors who will make their way 1,000 miles, sailing from Sydney across the treacherous Tasman Straits to Hobart. This race, it seems, is a microcosm of human life - with its uncertainties, unpredictabilities, the need for split-second decisions, a reliance on one's experience, and on one's wits and intuition in duet with a greater force...

On this month’s episode of The Sailing Show, Abby Ehler chats to two guests who have recently competed in the iconic Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.  First up Abby chats to sailing legend Dee Caffari, who competed with Ocean Respect Racing skipped by Australia’s Stacey Jackson.  Abby’s second guest is young, up and coming sailor Rosalin Kuiper, who chats about her experience sailing a 100ft maxi with the pro’s. Dee Caffari is a renowned British Sailor, who recently led ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’ – the first mixed gender youth team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race 2017/18; with a strong sustainability message.  As part of the Ocean Respect Racing crew, made up of fully professional female crew, the team came within minutes of an overall win of the Sydney to Hobart Race, something crews spend years trying to attain.Rosalin Kuiper, 23, of the Netherlands, graduated from the Team Heiner Youth Academy in 2018, following 3 years of extensive training. The academy, run by Roy Heiner, covers all aspects of big boat sailing from boat handling to boat maintenance, mastering all the positions on board, racing by day and night, boat delivery, safety, and navigation etc. Rosalin’s ambition and perseverance saw her land a shore-side role with the 100ft maxi yacht INFOTRACK, vying for Sydney-Hobart line honors and through her hard work and work ethic she was offered a sailing position for the race itself, a dream job for anyone setting out on the professional sailing circuit.  For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE. After preparing my Beneteau yacht 'Ocean Gem' for our first ever Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, I decided to interview our crew 4 weeks after we completed the race and gather their thoughts on the project and their experience. It started in September 2017 when we assembled a crew of 10 and a prepared a long project list that grew to more than 200 items. In early December we departed the Gold Coast in Queensland for Sydney via Lord Howe Island (300nm off Australia's east coast). The 800nm delivery journey qualified our crew and yacht for the 630nm race of a lifetime. This is a great episode for those thinking of pushing their local club racing and blue water sailing to the next level. It demonstrates that with good preparation, anything is possible.
