He is a member of several bands, including Okkervil River and Cuddle Magic. Davis attended New England Conservatory of Music. Davis's father Peter started being a musician at the age of five. Peter toured nationally and internationally with several groups, including a brief time with the Mamas and Papas. Like his son, Peter can play a variety of instruments ranging from banjo to clarinet to trombone. Davis's interest in Africa came through his father who spent three years in Malawi as a school music director. Davis has a brother and two sisters. He collaborates with his brother Tim on songs. In 2006 while students at The New England Conservatory of Music Davis, Alec Spiegelman, Christopher McDonald, Kristin Slipp, Cole Kamen-Green, and David Flaherty founded Cuddle Magic in 2006. The band is known for collaborations with many artists including Fred Frith, Ran Blake, the David Wax Museum, Larkin Grimm, Mike & Ruthy (formerly of the Mammals), Phyllis Chen, Joy Kills Sorrow. Individuals from Cuddle Magic have also performed with Bridget Kearney, Railbird, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Baby States, Ronald Reagan, Bird Fly Yellow, Margaret Glaspy, The People's Champs, Girls Guns and Glory, Lake Street Dive, Petal Shield, Split Red, Yapp! and The Superpowers Horns. Davis went to West Africa in 2009 and 2014 to study music. "The first time I went ...., I was studying awa drumming, which is like drum ensemble music for a bunch of different instruments." Davis is referring to a music tradition involving the djembe and dunun style of drums. In his first visit he heard of northern Ghanaian tradition of music called Bawa. In 2014 Davis traveled to Ghana with Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive and a former member of Cuddle Magic. They spent just over two weeks in the capital Accra, studying the traditional music of Northwest Ghana with master gyil player Aaron Bebe. They subsequently co-released an EP, BAWA, incorporating gyil music as source material. After leaving Ghana, Davis came down with typhoid and was very sick. When Davis and Joan Wasser (Joan As Police Woman) met in 2013, they found they both had an interest in Central African Republic Pygmy music. Davis co-wrote, recorded, co-produced and toured for the album Let It Be You (Reveal Records 2016) with Wasser. Ben is currently based in LA. Leave the studio to like, let everything happen. Glass is getting more expensive, cardboard's getting costlier, fuel prices are going through the roof and labour is hard to find... On top of that, in 2021, French wine-makers were hit with a Spring frost that wiped out a significant part of their crop. What's left, may hardly make a dent in the market and be markedly more expensive to boot, but if the half dozen appellations that Jason and David sample in this episode are anything to go by, the quality hasn't suffered at all. First up is Yapp's own label Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine, a crackling, flinty pick me-up you can't put down. Second, a deceptively pale yet aromatic Cotes Du Luberon, from Château La Canorgue, grown from deep-rooted, climate-resistant vine stock is not only delicious but well-placed to hold its own as temperatures and prices rise. Next up, an old favorite of Jason's from Domaine Saparale in Corsica: a coral pink, Corse Sartene - savoury with well-balanced berry fruits, you can taste the sunshine in every sip. La Ficelle is a light-hearted 'vin de soif', from Saint Pourçain, graced with a whacky 'Charlie Hebdo' cartoon that belies the smoothness of its violet and redcurrant palate. Best served 'lightly chilled,' the bottle helpfully bears the legend 'Patron une autre!' just in case you're in no condition to say it yourself. Lastly, from ancient terraces in Rousillon, Les Sorcieres, though made to drink straight from release, is not only impressively earthy, but bursting with well rounded black fruit flavours. On this showing, the 2021 French wine harvest may be small, but it is perfectly formed.

While it may seem “cliche” to talk about gratitude practices the week of Thanksgiving, I've got a deeper perspective that I think is so important, and needs to be discussed. The idea of gratitude and gratefulness sometimes comes along with this approach of cynicism. As if, it's silly to be focusing on gratitude. I am here to reinforce and share that gratitude can change your life in many aspects, but shouldn't be faked.Gratitude can be a conduit to peace. However, sometimes we as humans are guilty of slapping on the “bandage” of gratitude over bad feelings, but that isn't something that is beneficial long term. You can be both grateful and have negative feelings, but those negative feelings do have to be dealt with at some point and not just avoided with a “gratitude bandaid” being slapped on.I'm going to share 11 different gratitude practices that you can adopt for yourself. This will help create neural pathways in your brain which is what allows us to create new habits. We have a full scale coaching and consulting firm, Montgomery Companies. We have several coaching partners, and today we serve several thousand coaching clients. Those clients range from professional athletes to entrepreneurs and salespeople. We do work with some executive leaders at some larger firms. And I just have a blast getting to do what I do. And I meet some really interesting people. We get to help people think more deeply about who they are and where they're headed. And ultimately you get to help people live into who they were created to be. And it's a tremendous blessing. So I had a career in the financial services business, allowed me to pivot into this world pretty open about my professional journey. But at the end of the day, I graduated college 2010 and University of Iowa spent the last 11 years really building a skill set that's allowed us to build a business around coaching, consulting and leading people. So that's kind of the short version of my story. Obviously, there's a lot of twists and turns and gods provide a lot of grace. Jordan: Certainly I've been thankful to be around a lot of the right people. But if you're asking me the short version on how I got to where I'm at today, that's the the short version on Jordan Montgomery. Yeah, I think my dad, at the end of the day, my dad was a family man with a business, not a business man with a family. And I wanted to model that. I wanted to be a family man with a business, not a business man with a family. And I think as a driven type, a young man living in America, I kind of fight that every day. I mean, at the other day, like my wife and my kids are my top priority. But if I say they're my top priority, then that needs to show up in my calendar and that needs to be reflected in how I spend my time. And I want to be respected the most by people who know me the best. And that means that I'm a father first. I'm a husband first. I'm leading my family well. And if I lead inside the walls of my home, then I think I can lead in other areas of my life Joe: Cool. Jordan: As well. Not a lot of people have said that in the past on the show when they when they said, oh, I became an entrepreneur because and it was all of these other reasons. But to actually associate it with your father sitting on the sidelines, watching you play sports and concert or whatever it might be, that was really cool. Jordan: Well, and I'll say this to Joe, because there are some entrepreneurs listening that maybe don't have that flexibility, like maybe you're truly in a situation where you've got a team or your businesses in an industry that requires you to work certain hours or whatever. So that's not a shame or guilt. Anyone who's working really hard to provide, because at the end of the day, entrepreneurs are called to work longer hours is just part of the deal. So if you're in that grind right now, here's what I'd encourage you with, is somebody that's going to change and the reason that you're doing what you're doing right now, the reason that you're working as hard as you're working right now is to have the flexibility and the autonomy. And, you know, I also wasn't there for my dad's early years. Like, I missed you know, I was born when my dad was eight to 10 years into being an entrepreneur. So he earned that flexibility. So let's just not forget that that flexibility is earned. Joe: Like I was resentful over it. But I just love the way you framed that whole thing. That was really cool. Jordan: Well, yeah, you know, I just I fell in love with sports at a really early age. I just love competition. I loved competing. I love watching other people compete. I love the atmosphere. I love the energy that goes into a sports competition. I'm still the guy, Joe. Like, I will watch one shining moment at the end of the final four for those who are familiar with that show. I cry every year when I watch that one shining, but that little three minute clip. And I think part of the reason I get emotional about that as you watch young people get emotional over competition. And I just loved the rush of competition. I loved watching people give their all to a very specific activity, blood, sweat and tears. You know, you think a lot like the average NFL athlete will compete for less than two hours, whistle to whistle over the course of a season. But they can be literally all year round and they'll get paid, graded and evaluated for what they do inside of two hours. All year long, but it's kind of a metaphor for it for all of us, right, because the reality is each one of us is practicing for little moments, for small moments. Some of them we can predict, some of them we can't. But you get paid and your best to show you get paid really, really, really well to be prepared Joe: Hmm. Jordan: In small little windows of time. And so I developed the sort of fascination or obsession with helping athletes prepare and be at their best when that small window of opportunity presents itself and, you know, your clutch, your clutch when you can show up and do normal things. In an abnormal times, so like Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, you know, they're considered clutch because at the end of the day, they could show up normal. They could just be who they were because they had practiced so much in the most important windows of time. And it's a really interesting metaphor that we can apply to all of life. Yeah. Yeah, well, it's it's a pursuit of excellence, right, and you know, I'm reading a book right now by Tim Grover, The Unforgiving Race to Greatness, and it's called Winning. And, Joe: Yeah, it's Jordan: You know, there's Joe: And Jordan: So much of what Tim Joe: Again, Jordan: Grover preaches Joe: People Jordan: That I Joe: That Jordan: Really love. It's unbelievable. You know, and I watch certain friends here in Arizona, believe it or not, Arizona has got a very big hockey base. You know, like fans love hockey. And there's a lot of kids that come here, play hockey, play on the farm team of the coyotes or and we've had friends that had their kids just go through all in hockey. Moms and dads have the worst it's the worst schedule I've ever seen. And to go all the way to the very end and be on the farm team and never get called up. And I can't even imagine that it's just grueling. Jordan: Yeah, well, you know, there's there's a lot that goes into speaking, right, speaking as an art form, and in today's world, attention is currency. So something we think about a lot and the keynote speaking world is you've got Joe: Mm Jordan: To Joe: Hmm. Jordan: Keep people's attention. And if you can't, you're out, you're done. You'll never be the really high demand keynote speaker if you don't know how to keep somebody's attention. So there's multiple ways that we do that. One of the ways that we keep people's attention is through story. It's a story sell facts, tell. Jordan: Common sense is not always kind of practice. If you watch your average keynote speaker, their eyes will kind of drift all throughout the room to look down, look sideways. I think at the speaker, you want to keep constant eye contact. And then the other thing I think about is being really you centered in the message being you centered. So I'm going to use two people's names. I'm going to pick people out in the crowd. I'm going to touch people, maybe even on the shoulder or the arm as I'm speaking. And I'm going to move through the crowd. And so much of communication is nonverbal, right? 90 percent is nonverbal. It's not what you say, it's how you say it. And it's also not what you say. It's what people hear and it's what they remember. Maya Angelou famously said it's not what you say that people remember. It's how you make them feel. And so I try to stay really in tune with how I make people feel. A lot of that is my energy, my body language. It's you focus communication, it's telling stories, and it's the difference between connecting and communicating. So if you're listening and you're thinking about your communication style or maybe you want to develop your craft as a keynote speaker, those are a few things that you could consider. Jordan: And I'll say this to Joe. I'm a long way away from where I want to be. I got a long way to go. So those are things that I think about repetitiously. And I get obsessed with the practice of my craft. And I'm evaluating and observing high level keynote speakers. You know, how do they move? What do they say? What do they not say? You know, their pace, their tonality, the way that they tell stories, their presence. Yeah, those are all things that I'm paying attention to. So I appreciate your kind words. I think communication as an art form is no different than playing an instrument or doing a dance. And for anybody that's in sales, for any entrepreneur, if you're not taking that seriously as you develop and grow your business, that's something to really consider and think about. Because whether you're speaking to an audience of one hundred or a thousand or an audience of five or ten, you're in the human connection business before you're in the construction business or before you're in the marketing business or financial planning business or real estate business. We've got to remember that the human connection is at the center of everything that we do. Well, thank you. It's kind of you to say. I did and I went to school for interdepartmental studies, which is a fancy way to cover recreational management, so I literally wanted to go to school, have a great social experience, and then start a business and the fitness world. Jordan: That was kind of my dream. And so I took some entrepreneurial courses, got a degree in recreation management, fell into finance and in two things were true. I didn't want to have a boss, so I went to work for myself and I wanted to create my own schedule that that was it. I want to call my shots, create my own schedule. But I didn't have any money and I didn't have any experience. And so I fell into financial services because it allowed me to be in business for myself, but not by myself. So I had a great support system. It was kind of like a franchise model, had a lot of success in that world at an early stage, had a big event in my life in twenty fifteen that really have me thinking about my future in a deeper way. And then I decided to pivot into sort of the consulting and coaching world making financial planning, kind of our kind of our core client. And so in a very early stage in a coaching business, financial advisers were some of our first clients by way of my background in the financial planning world. Joe: Yeah, and you do it incredibly well, my friend. So thank you. So let's just backtrack really quickly so that I can get the progression from college into starting this company. So did you go to school for finance? Jordan: I think it's so true Joe: Ok. Jordan: In life and in business, definitely in entrepreneurship, where we're leading people, that more is caught than taught. Joe: Ok. Jordan: And so nobody really taught me how to coach. But I watched other people coach and I watched other people in my industry that do what I'm doing now, do it at a really high level. And again, I paid attention to quality of life. I paid attention to the relationships. I paid attention to the way that they manage their decisions and manage their time. And I thought, you know, I want to do that. I think I can do that. And I actually did it in tandem with my own financial planning. And so I started sort of coaching on the side and I had really been coaching all the while I was in financial planning and some aspect working with clients. But I also started getting asked to speak and do workshops. And so I sort of fell in love with that work, Joe. But the reality is I had a couple of mentors. I had some key people in my life that had done that work in a really high level. One of those people is a guy by the name of Ben Newman. Another guy is John Wright Senior. Jordan: Of good people. And I woke up one day and I thought, you know what? I could leave my financial planning business based on what we built in the coaching business. And then we started to add more partners and multiply our efforts through other people. And that's when it really starts to get financed, when you can impact the world or you can impact the world around you through the people that work with you. So virtually everybody on our team right now, with the exception of maybe two to three people there in the coaching business, so their coaching partners, so they're leading, they're doing coaching and consulting work, either individual coaching group, coaching, keynote speaking, they're all contracted out. So some of them have five clients, some of them have 30 clients. We have a couple that have just a couple of clients and they're all sort of specialized. So we have some former professional athletes. We have some people that came from the ministry world. So they're actually pastors or they have been pastors. And then we have some people in the world of sales. We have some real estate agents and financial advisers. Some of them are very technical. Somebody might say a more motivational, but all of them are for hire as coaching partners. It's my job to lead them and make sure that they're getting what they need from a content standpoint and also just keeping them connected to to a vision and and keeping them connected to our company. But we're having a ton of fun. I mean, it's it's awesome to be on a team. It's fun to be a part of something that's bigger than just me. And, you know, each one of them is unique in terms of what they bring to the table. Joe: So that's a great segue because you do have a fairly Jordan: You Joe: Sizable Jordan: Know, what's Joe: Team. Jordan: So I want to give people the freedom and flexibility to be autonomous and how they work with clients. And so I've never told somebody, hey, here's the five step plan. Here's exactly what you have to do. Now, I'll make some general suggestions about the way that we lead people and care for people. But at the end of the day, most of the people that are on our coaching platform have been wildly successful in other arenas. And so they've been leading. They've been coaching. They've been training and developing people. So I think we're aligned in terms of our values. But beyond that, I want them to really operate in their true giftedness. And for some of them, that giftedness is in listening. You know, for some of them, it's in the world of neuroscience. You know, they just really understand how the brain works for others. They're just big on accountability, the kind like the bulldog that's in your face. It's really intense and motivational. So we want people to be who they are. We want them to have strong values, which for us means their faith filled and family oriented. And if they're faith filled, family oriented, others focus. They're usually a good fit for our coaching Joe: Did Jordan: Practice. You know, there's a few that we would say, hey, we're not not licensed to do that. We're not going to dive into that space. But for the most part, if it is in the world of performance sales and driving results, there's somebody on our team that can handle the issue of the opportunity. Yes, so there's really two components to coaching for us and our business model, one is group coaching and one individual coaching, and those are obviously very separate. If I'm working with an individual client and we're talking about the phases of coaching or how I work with a client, first is discovery. So the answers you get are only as good as the questions that you ask. And people don't care how Joe: Cool. And I find out that your dog just died or that you just lost the key employee or that your house just burned down. But I'm using really dramatic examples. But anyway, the point, is there something else on your mind? I'm missing it. I'm not know I've failed to connect with you, and candidly, I failed to lead you. So the first question I asked to all of our coaching clients and a coaching meeting, and they would tell you, this is not to say, hey, Joe, how do we create space to discuss and talk about the things that are most pressing, interesting and relevant for you today? I want to start there and then we'll recap and we'll talk about some of the stuff that we've talked about the past. I'm always, you know, forcing accountability. So we're we're bringing things to the forefront. Did you do X, Y and Z to do that or Yapp with that? But we addressed the issues that are most present. And then I'm always trying to share ideas and concepts that I feel like are relevant to them based on the seasonal life there in industry they're in or what they've said that they needed help with. Conversations tend to be fairly organic because, again, it's it's a relationship. And, you know, people open up to us about all kinds of stuff, their marriage, their finances, their friendships, their their problems that go way beyond their professional life. Jordan: So I appreciate the question. I don't know if I if I answered it exactly. But to give you a window into our world and how we work with people, that that's sort of our our process and style. You know, right now we work with such a wide range of people, Joe, so I'm not as concerned about like industry or niche. Here's what I what I'm really concerned with this character traits. So they've got to be values oriented, right? They got to care. They're going to be a decent person. In other words, if they just want to go make all the money in the world, they don't want to leave their family. I'm probably not a good fit. I'm going to challenge them on their values and lead in their family and growing in their faith. And that's part of who I am. But that's not for everybody. But so we're probably not a good fit if that's not part of who they are. And then the second thing that I would tell you is they got to be open minded. They have to be willing to learn. They have to be somebody that enjoys new information and new ways of thinking. A new perspective, fresh perspective. Right. Doesn't mean that I'm always right or my perspective is the right perspective. It just means that they're willing to listen right there. They're willing to hear and then they're willing to be challenged. So they want somebody to ask them the tough questions and share the truth and mix even said it best. You said average players want to be left alone. Good players want to be coached, great players want the truth. I want people that want the truth. I want people that really want to be challenged. Jordan: So the group coaches typically kind of a one hour session, we try to kind of meet people where they're at. So I work with organizations, as do our partners, to figure out, hey, what really do you need? What's the right time frame? What's the right size? I'd love to tell you that we've got, like, this specific program. It's cookie cutter. It's not. But that's by design. We really want to be a partner and meet people where they're at. So sometimes it's a small as is five people. I've got one group right now, 60, which I think is a little too big. What's important to us is that that's it's intimate or as intimate as it can be where people really feel like, you know, them. And and so we call on people. I try to get to know everybody by name and remember little facts about who they are and what's important to them. It's highly interactive. So I'm calling on people throughout the session. Usually I'm delivering 30 minutes of content or 30 minutes of discussion. We challenge challenge on the spot. I have other people challenge each other. I always say this in our group coaching program that where you sit determines what you see and you see something different than everybody else's and different is valuable. And so what that means is your voice matters because whether you're the most experienced person on the call are the least experienced person on the call, you see something that nobody else in the organization sees. And so we need your voice. We need your perspective, because you've got a different perspective than everybody else. Yes, so much of our business is virtual, it just kind of always has been and most a lot of our clients aren't local. So they're you know, they're kind of spread out. We have people all over the US. I'm pretty used to Zoom calls and phone calls, and I speak a lot. Right. So keynote speaking is live often, but we still do virtual keynotes as well. So it's a good mixture, I would say, in so many ways covid changed our business. I was always willing to do things virtually, but I think a lot of companies weren't until they realized like, hey, we can do it this way. And so for me, as a person with a young family, it allowed me to stay at home and I didn't have to. I wasn't on a plane twice a week sleeping in a hotel. So so covid in some ways I'd be careful how I say this, because it was a really difficult time for a lot of people for our business. It actually affected my day to day rhythm or quality of life and I think a positive way and allowed me to be more present with my family. So it's a good mix of both. But I would say the pandemic certainly forced it to be more virtual. First of all, have 20 years of experience, a team of 20 people there doing tens of millions of dollars revenue, that they're very successful. And so they hire us. They hire me to come in and do coaching work with them. And every one of them has sort of a different set of needs. But one of the things that we always talk about, at least on some level, is our communication style. Right, because they're in sales and they're communicating all day, every day for a living. So I challenge this financial advisor. Usually within the first few meetings, I'll say, hey, I want you to send me your approach language, which is really their what they say to engage a client and conversation. So it's a first time meeting and this is the first five minutes of sort of the introductory meeting. And I can I can feel their energy when I when I challenge them and I say, I want you to send me that communication. Their energy is like at a negative to. Right, they're thinking you're going to bill me X for coaching, I've been doing this for 20 years, like what I don't need is help on the basics of what I say. And, you know, I can just feel that just not really excited about that. Jordan: But I challenge him. I say I think this is a really important part of our work together. It helps me understand who you are and how you're showing up for people. So send that over when you get some time. So they send it over and it's not going to have all the answers. But I'm willing to listen to it repeatedly. Our team listens to it repeatedly. And then we give them an analysis. We give them feedback. The energy level, when we give them feedback, goes from a negative two to a 10. Every single time. Because they do not know what they do not know. And I just had a guy the other day, I said, OK, so when the first two minutes of your communication, you said the word thirty seven times. Did you know that? You know, hey, the way that you show up, did you know that you use me focused conversation? Over and over, you are literally saying I my, me repeatedly. And you were doing it for 20 years and nobody has ever told you that you're doing it, and that's a shame because you would connect with people and a deeper and more meaningful way because you would be able to drive better results. You would have more purposeful conversation if you could just make that one small tweak. Jordan: You know, we could end the conversation at the cozy relationship right there, and the time that we had spent together would have been massively impactful. Again, not because I have all the answers, but because I'm willing to listen, give real feedback and press in on blind spots that we all have. And the last thing I'll say is people need to be encouraged. You know, people will go farther than they think they can when someone else thinks they can, period. And I don't care for the most successful person, the least successful person, the most experienced, the least experienced. I'm working with a guy the other day, Fortune 500, executive leader, big time leader of people. They had a record breaking year at the firm. Unbelievable year. This guy is in charge of literally hundreds of direct reports. And I asked him in a conversation, I just said, hey, how many people told you over this past fiscal year? So you just wrapped up the year. How many people told you? Good job. And he says, well, like, what do you mean? I said, you know what I mean? Like e-mails, texts, phone calls. Like how many people reached out to you said, hey, good job, great you. And he said, Zira. Zero people had picked up the phone and sent a text instead of an email, so the point is this job that I've worked with, this guy named John. Jordan: So the point is this, John, that you need to be encouraged. You need somebody to point out what you're doing. Well. You need somebody to touch your heart and remind you of who God made you to be and all of the natural God given giftedness that's inside of you. And I just want to share with you it's an honor to be able to do that for you and with you. But let me let me help you see what I see. Let's look back at the last 12 months. Here's what you've achieved. In that moment, I think I think when you step into somebody's life in that way, you're a lid lifter and you do it authentically and you help them see more and you help them see before. Man, I think you're in a position of strength relationally. And I think that person at that moment realizes that that relationship means more than they ever realized. So there's a lot that we can say about coaching. But I think, Joe, when you touch somebody's heart, when you appreciate people for who they are, when you point out their God given gift A. and when you deliver the truth and love and you point out the blindspots, you can be a world class coach and it has nothing to do with what you know, it's all about. Jordan: You show up and serve people. Well, that's just my answer. I don't know if it's the right answer by anybody else's standard, but in my world, it's the way that I try to live each and every day with the people that we serve. I love it. It is a story of if you set your mind to something and you work hard enough, you will get there. Hala takes us through her journey. Elizabeth Molina: [00:01:40] Welcome, Hala. Hala Tala: [00:01:42] Thank you so much, Elizabeth. I'm so happy to be here. Elizabeth Molina: [00:01:45] Awesome. I'm so happy to have you here. This is going to be such a great episode. I cannot wait. I'm just going to dive right in because there's so much content. The more I hear you, the more I learn about you. I'm just like, wait, what when did this happen? Like, how old are you again? So I was I want people to know about you and to just hear your amazing voice and power and like, pun intended. You guys will stay tuned for that. So, Hala, let's get to it. How did you begin in the industry you are today? You are a powerhouse to be reckoned with. You have your hands in everything. I don't think there you have enough toes and fingers to put in all the jars that you're in. And tell us a little bit about your back story. Like, let's make it like maybe like not that long. Tell us about all your your journey through radio, through your corporate. Like, tell us about that before we dive in. Hala Tala: [00:02:37] Yeah, of course. I'll give you the really quick version. So I started my career at Hot 97. It's one of the biggest radio stations in New York, in America for hip hop and R and B. And so I got this internship, my junior year of college. I was in the corporate side, the production side I got I was doing really well. So then they recruited me to be Angie Martinez's assistant in the studio area. So this was like a really coveted role. It was super demanding. And so what happened is I ended up dropping out of college to take it full time and to really take my chances and try to see if I could grow a career in radio. And so I was Angie Martinez Gopher, basically, where I would do all her research. I would answer calls, I would babysit her kids, I would go get clothes for her. I would, you know, go driving around with her to events and was basically her apprentice for three years. And it was totally for free. I never got paid a dime from Hot 97 or from Angie Martinez. So I dropped out of school, like I said. And that was very difficult because I came from a family of doctors. So my dad was a doctor. All my siblings were in med school or, you know, just graduated. I'm the youngest of the baby, the family. And here I was working for free, dropped out of college, working at a radio station when everybody else was in med school. Hala Tala: [00:03:49] So I was actually looked at as like the failure of the family, which is really funny now. And but I was working really hard, you know, they just didn't understand what I was doing. So then paying roll opened up at Hot 97 and it was to be Andrew Martinez's producer. And for a while I was doing that job. And every morning I would I was already doing that job from before. The reason why she had fired her producer is that he was really underperforming. And I was already doing that job for many, many months. And they decided to instead of hire me, I wasn't even getting paid minimum wage, but literally at the station every day had a key card as if I was employee, like, highly legal. Right. I, I still instead of giving me a job, they decided to promote somebody who is in the video department, who had no production experience, no producer experience whatsoever. And so I was pretty upset. I was a young girl. I was like twenty at the time or twenty one. And I, I sent a text to Jaroussky who is now very popular on Hot 97 all the time and still has his show. And I said he was the one who got the producer role. And I said, you know, I don't feel good today. Hala Tala: [00:04:55] I don't want to come into the station. If you want to be the producer, learn it on your own and he showed that text to Angie, Angie got upset, fired me, and essentially tried to blackball me from the industry and told all the deejays they couldn't talk to me anymore, didn't even let me say goodbye. I had to pack. I didn't get to pack up my stuff. I just was never allowed to go there again, never allowed to talk to anyone again. And it was really traumatic, a traumatic experience for me, looking back and really impacted the future of my life very dramatically. Because had that never happened, I may have been on Hot 97 as an on air personality right now. And that was literally my trajectory. That's anybody who works for free at the station. It's for that reason they're basically saying work for free because we're going to make you a star, you know, and that's what I was working for free for. So anyway, I didn't let that hold me back. I think they fired me on a Thursday. And by Sunday, I had built like a website called the consortium hip hop strawberry plant Dotcom. And I decided I was going to recruit girls and create this network, this female network. And we were going to empower each other and support each other because I felt like as a woman, I wasn't getting the right exposure and opportunities in the hip hop industry. Hala Tala: [00:06:05] And so I was going to recruit other girls. So we had girls from Def Jam, VH1, iHeart radio. All these different girls joined us. We started the sort of hip hop and at the height of it we were 50 girls strong. We were hosting the hottest parties and concerts in New York, the same DJs who wouldn't pay me minimum wage. I started hosting parties with them. If you go look on my Facebook and Instagram, you'll see fliers with me on with deejay Carmello and Funkmaster Flex and all these huge DJs that I used to host parties for. And we saw those concerts and a radio show. So it was great. And at the height of that, MTV scouted us for a reality TV show and they filmed us all summer. We got a studio on Broadway. It was finally going to be a way for me to, like, really monetize this endeavor. Like we were a big name in the tri state, but we weren't really making that much money just from events. 50 girls that money spreads quickly can spread thin across so many girls. I was the president, so I would get paid the most. But still, MTV filmed us all summer and then pulled the plug. So last minute they decided they're not going to air the show. And then again, it was one of those moments where where? What do I do now? You know, my life was kind of crumbling. Hala Tala: [00:07:12] And then a piece of the story that I usually never tell. But I am going to tell it because it's relevant. It's the first time I've ever telling this is after MTV didn't pick our show. I shut down the blogsite, but I also at the same time, it was around twenty fourteen and there was lots of war going on in Gaza, Palestine, same thing. That's what's happening right now. And I shut down my website and I just became like an advocate for Palestine and I raised over three hundred thousand dollars for Palestine. And I had all these fundraising events and that's all I concentrated on for a long time. Yeah, but it was funny because I shut down my website and I basically exited from the entertainment industry and talking about Palestine and like being like political like that was like the nail in my coffin. So like nobody fucked with me anymore. A lot of the people who who supported me stop supporting me. I lost a lot of friends, like a lot of people just didn't mess with me anymore because I started promoting Palestine. So essentially. I exited the entertainment industry and I thought I would never get back on a mic again, so I was like, I'm just going to be I want to be better. Hala Tala: [00:08:17] I want a more meaningful life. What I was doing before was all fake. It was so such like not sexual, but like we used to host parties because we were pretty girls and I just wanted to stay away from that. I was like, it's time for me to grow up. There's people dying in the world. I want to fix that. I want to be a good person and I want to work on myself because I felt like I had 50 girls under me, all kind of banking on my success for themselves to be successful. It was like I had to do like 90 percent of the work for all these other girls to get all this success. And I was like, I just want to do it on my own. So I went got my MBA. I basically forced myself into the graduate program because I did not have the I would add a two point three undergrad GPA. So I didn't deserve to get into graduate school. But they let me in and then I got a 4.0. I graduated number one of my class and then got a job at Hewlett Packard, started Young and Profiting, which is now a number one education podcast and worked at Disney for a little while, then launched the media. So that is my story in a nutshell. You can dig into any part that you want. Elizabeth Molina: [00:09:21] Oh, my God, I love that you I was like, please do it quick because you have so many lives that you live that you like. Bam, bam, bam. Here you go. It wasn't Hala Tala: [00:09:29] That quick. I was like, oh, shoot, I'm kind of going too long. And, you Elizabeth Molina: [00:09:33] Know, it was it was really good because it was it was definitely quick. There's so much to be said there. So I kind of want to, like you said, a lot there. And I want to unpack that a little bit. And I want to go back to what I keep on hearing is your resiliency like you are that chart that you see of of like the the heartbeat that goes up and down, up and down, up and down. And so I want to take it way back when when you were little, OK? Because it seems like you've been dealing with the rejection, people telling, you know, people shutting the door in your face after you put in the work. It's not like you're lazy, right? Because there are some people who are like, I just want to show up and be pretty. I'm going to show up and be a voice. And you have a beautiful voice. And we were talking about that before. I wanted you to tell us a little bit more about your middle school, high school, because I feel like there's a story there that relates to what we're going to get into, which is what fuels you, because there's a fueling you. That's a really massive like there's this fire in Holla. You guys have to watch her and she's always on. And so, like, we need to know the secret to that feel. But where did little Holer become? So, like, I'm going to do it. I'm going to get no matter what. Hala Tala: [00:10:41] Yeah. So like as a kid, I was always like really, really outgoing. So like you said, I was a great singer. And so I'd always like at family parties like the ones singing and like wanting to be the star of the show. I was the baby. I was cute. So like, I got a lot of attention when I was growing up. And in middle school, I was like decently popular. I had a lot of friends. I'm a Palestinian American family. My parents are really open like a lot of our family. Friends were Christian and Jewish, and we were just like a normal family. And I would I would like say that, like, people treated us like we were Italian before nine eleven. Right. So it's like we were we were ethnic, but we weren't, like, weird or we weren't bad, you know what I mean? And like, my dad was a doctor. And so, like, you know, my friends, a sleepover. And it wasn't like we were just a normal family. And I mean to say this because after 9/11, all of that changed. And so I used to be into soccer. I used to be like in the plays and like always get like either the co-lead or the lead in the plays and like solos and all this kind of stuff. The 9/11 happened and I felt like I never got any opportunities for a long time. Like so like end of middle school, all of high school, just no opportunities. Hala Tala: [00:11:50] Like I had the best voice in school. I would say the one thing, the one saving grace that I had an amazing course teacher and he still always gave me a solo in the concert. So if I didn't have that, I'd probably have like no confidence. But I knew that I had the best voice in school, but they would never put me on the lead in the plays. I wasn't even allowed to be in the talent show. Can you believe that? Having the best voice in school and they're telling you you're not allowed to be like you're not good enough to be in the talent show. Recently I lived in a really white town and I was like one of the only brown people. And before nine eleven, it was definitely better in terms of like how the community treated me and my other cousins who lived down the street. But then after that, after 9/11, it was like I just felt like I got zero opportunities. I tried out for the volleyball team. No, I tried it for the Chilean team. No, I tried it for the play. No, I tried to be on student council. No, I tried to be in the towns, you know, like literally. No, no, no, it's not it wasn't normal, you know, and before nine eleven, I would get a lot more opportunities. And I literally think that there's been so many opportunities that I haven't gotten because of literally my name. And like, that sucks, you know, even job applications. Hala Tala: [00:12:56] I think I've been rejected because people are like, call it. Oh, that sounds really weird. She probably doesn't even know how to speak English like. And it's like the opposite. I'm like the most American person ever. Right. But like, it's just it's tough, you know, and I really hope that that changes. But the big moral of this. Story here is that by the time I got to college, I was so used to rejection that I was like unstoppable. And when I went to college, I went to NJT. It was like nerdy nerd central, right. So many like just engineers, kind of geeks. So I got to school and I was like the hottest girl in school, you know what I mean? And so I was like I got on the cheerleading team. I got in the play. I was like in my sorority and just rocked it. And it was like a really big confidence boost because I went from, like, having all these friends and stuff in middle school and then in high school just kind of being normal and not really getting too many opportunities to in college, like really just soaring and sticking out as a sore thumb. And then I got that internship at Hot 97 and then I started just hanging out with celebrities and dating Chris Brown, for example, like just, you know, had like a really cool life as a 19 year old. And and then the rest is history. Elizabeth Molina: [00:14:04] Wait, did you date him before Rihanna or after Rihanna? Hala Tala: [00:14:07] Right after Rihanna was giving me. Elizabeth Molina: [00:14:10] I was going to ask you, like, how was that? Because that's I think that's a whole another podcast. Hala Tala: [00:14:16] Yeah, he was nice. I mean, it was like I was his girlfriend for me. I wasn't anything serious. It wasn't like we were like very, very serious. But he's taking me out to dinner and I had to sign a waiver before we the first date that we ever had his like driver. He gets Chris gets out of the car and his driver hands me like a waiver that basically says, like, I can't tell anyone that we're on this date. Oh, my God. Here I am saying it because it's like nothing happens, so. Elizabeth Molina: [00:14:42] Oh, that is that is a good story. Like, really good story. Did you get any dance moves from from Chris? Hala Tala: [00:14:48] Did you know when you think constantly every day, like he would just be like walking around singing the whole time, he was really an artist at heart. Elizabeth Molina: [00:14:57] Did you ever sing with him like. Hala Tala: [00:14:59] Yeah, I used to. So at the time I was a singer and so we would be in the car listening to my music. And he used to give me feedback on my music. And if I really wanted to have been a singer, I had the connections back in the I could have really pushed for it, but it wasn't I really wasn't like, you see how passionate I am with podcasting. If I had been I wanted to be a singer, but I'm not like the best dancer in the world. And I knew that, like, you really have to be both if you really, really want to succeed. And I have a great voice, but I'm not like Christina Aguilera. So it's like I either need to be like the best singer in the world or I need to be really good at singing, really good at dancing. And I knew I wasn't that. So I pivoted to radio. Elizabeth Molina: [00:15:38] Ok, well, I'm going to have to ask you how, like, do you mind giving us a little sample of your music? Because I want to hear you sing like I never heard you sing on a podcast. Hala Tala: [00:15:49] I've never sang, not even on my own podcast. Elizabeth So this is a big ask. So I'm going to sing a song I tried out for American Idol. I didn't make it. Obviously, I tried out for American Idol and I did the Keyshia Cole love song. Would you say Elizabeth Molina: [00:16:06] Was it the dancing or was it just because, like, Hala Tala: [00:16:09] No, I was wrong. I got to the second round, like, I got through the first round. The second time I literally went up, started singing for two seconds and they were like, next. And I was like, OK, like they just didn't like how I looked pretty much. Now I'm young and profiting, you know, everything happens for a reason. OK, I will sing. And by the way, I have not warmed up. This is totally just a lie. But yes, let's do it, OK. I used to think that I wasn't fun enough, and I used to think that I wasn't wild enough, but I wouldn't waste my time trying to figure out why you playing games. What's this all about? And I can't Believe, You're hurting me. I met your girl. What a difference. What you see. Have you seen any but I guess it was all just make Believe, oh, love. That was so good and bad. Hala Tala: [00:17:25] But anyway, that was those mean honestly, guys. Now, I got a little heavy thinking, probably like a year and a half or so. Oh, my God. Sorry if I hurt your ears. Elizabeth Molina : [00:17:35] No, you did it. That was so good. So what what made you change? What was like your turning point? We were like, I'm not going to be a singer anymore because you have a great voice and you've always had a great voice since you were young and you still do, which is, I think, part of the magic in terms of like you have the beauty, you have the brains and you have the voice. Hala Tala: [00:17:53] Yeah, I think really the pivotal point was being in hot any seven and seeing the music industry and kind of being abused by the industry. I mean, I had a lot of people paying attention to me. I was the only girl in the studio area at Hot 97. So I met people like Kanye West, Jay-Z, Drake, you name it, Trey Songz, all the big people of that time. And a lot of these producers and their managers would approach me. And I was really young and they would try to sleep with me and they would try to entice me to do things. I had Mack Maine telling me if I was his girlfriend, he would make me the next Nicki Minaj. And I just I was like, you know what, this seems like I need to sleep my way to the top. And it's not really me. And I just pivoted. I just felt like I could honestly I really think I could have dated Mack Maine and been a part of young money like that. I literally had people at Young Money telling me that and I just couldn't do it. I just didn't do it. And then I just kind of pivoted and just kept working in radio and kept working on other stuff. Elizabeth Molina: [00:19:00] So now what I'm hearing is you could have been in young money, but now you're young and profiting. Yeah. Hala Tala: [00:19:06] How funny is that? And I've never told that story either, but it's the truth. And even Mack, Maine, he's reached out to me recently and was like, well, like you've been doing some crazy things. And it's just so funny because it's like, yeah. And I'm really happy that I didn't, like, sell myself out like that. And my boyfriend's a very famous music producer. His name is Harry Fraud. I've been with him for like 12 years. And so he does music for French Montana, he does music for recrossing and the Weeknd and all that kind of stuff. And so he produced my first album. And he he also didn't want me to be a singer because he was like, listen, I see the girls, I see what they go through. Like, it's not for you. It's not a good life. Like and so, like, he kind of steered me away from it, too. And it's like I feel like, honestly, this is going to sound so messed up. I feel like if I took that path, I would have been raped like ten times. Like, I know it's sad to say that, but like literally that's the kind of vibe that it was. Elizabeth Molina: [00:19:59] Wow. How thank you so much for being so honest and just like having no filter, because I think that a lot of girls need to hear this. And you are setting an example of what like a real role model is, right? Like, listen, I lived the life. This is what's really there. Do you want to take that by and like I, however, was not in the music industry because, as you know, my voice is not as angelic as yours, even on my best day. But I was in the modeling space since I was five. And I was actually I got into like America's Next Top Model the first season when I was really young. And then my dad said no, because they have to put cameras all over. He wouldn't sign I was an eighteen yet. And he said no, because, you know, they record you in the shower and he's like, no, like, my dad was very conservative. He's like prostitutes. That's for prostitutes. So he like there were a lot of opportunities that I had. And it's the same story. Like had I stayed in that, I probably would have been. And I've been in situations as well. I'm sure you and I can go back with stories. And that's a whole nother podcast as well. Hala Tala: [00:20:59] I know. And I think so many girls have those stories, unfortunately, but yeah. Elizabeth Molina: [00:21:02] So I think it's great because we are only shown the beautiful image. Right. Let's go back to the beauty we kept on talking about how you're beautiful, how you're stunning and how like that also opened the doors in some ways. And then it also shut the doors in some ways because it was intimidating. But I really love it that you're talking about this because people now can see, OK, it's there's an image, what goes behind it, what's happening on the back end. And like, you kind of shed a little bit of light there. So, ladies, if you're listening, all that glitters isn't gold and just know what you're signing up for for sure, Hala Tala: [00:21:33] Because I'm telling you, I was so my first year or two hundred eighty seven. The reason why I got the internship, because I wanted to push my music and so I'd spend my days at the station and then at night I'd be recording music with different producers and things like that. And then all the different ANZAAS and things from all the different record labels would come into Hot 97. And they knew that I was singer and they would be like, oh, like, you know, you know, you could talk to my record label and basically insinuating, like, if you give me a blowjob, like literally like literally saying, yes, literally like soliciting that. And it just happened over and over again. I was like, you know what, this just really seems like this. The only way is to be like that. And I'm not like that. And so I just pivoted, you know? And so honestly, I've never really. Said that out loud, I don't know why I am telling you this right now, but it's like I feel like your listeners probably need to hear it. Like if you guys really want to know why I didn't decide to become a singer and why it pivoted, it's because it was like seemed like the only way I could get there would be through doing things that I wasn't comfortable with. Elizabeth Molina: [00:22:37] Wow, thank you for sharing that with us, with our listeners. I'm glad that I was able to get that out of you. I think the message was ready to be heard. And I think, you know, we're coming out of a pandemic. People are craving for attention, craving to be seen, to be heard. And I think this is also like an opportunity for people to maybe see themselves in this position. And now hearing this, this can be empowering. So can you just share with us how you kind of deflected that? Hala Tala: [00:23:07] Well, first of all, I just want to take it back and I want to remind everybody that this was 10 years ago and I was like 19, 20, 21, you know what I mean? So I was very, very young. And so I would I would just like go with people like if if they said something like, you know, inappropriate, I would just stop responding and just, you know, let them know that that's not really what I was into. But in terms of, like, how I got over it all, I started my own path. I started my own website. I got out of that Hot 97 environment that was really abusing me. I mean, they were abusing. Me sexually, in terms of like the people like, you know, allowing guests and artists to, like, always hit on me, like leveraging the fact that I was a pretty girl, that all these, like, celebrities wanted to be around and everything like that. And then also but also like not paying me and compensating me. And and in terms of, like, all the value that I was bringing for all the actual work that I was doing. Right. I think what empowered me was leaving, even though I was kicked out because I was just like I was too, like, you know, star struck by being Hot 97 and being like, holla from Hot 97 and being able to everybody being like, oh my gosh, how did you get that cool job? You get to meet so many celebrities. Hala Tala: [00:24:18] Oh, my God. And so as a young girl, I was like, yeah, I'm the shit. You know, I am meeting all these celebrities. I am partying with Chris Brown. I am you know, I'm in the VIP every night, you know. But once I started my own thing, the sort of hip hop and and I was the CEO and I was the owner and like, I wasn't going to be in uncomfortable situations anymore. And it was all me and I was the boss. Everything changed. You know, everybody treated with me with more respect. I was never in those situations anymore because I wouldn't put myself in those situations, like I would get in those situations at Hot 97, because it's like those managers are eight hours or whatever would be at the station and just think it was OK to, like, approach me like that, you know? So it's like I got to make my own circles once I was my own boss and created my only. Elizabeth Molina: [00:25:06] I love that, I love that because you took your power back. You're like, no, I'm not going to be under that. I'm going to make my own lane. And when you make your own lane, you're young and profiting and you're just soaring like every single day. There's like something else you're working on and you're being very successful. So, guys, if you're paying attention, if you're watching this, like, pay attention to how she is, you're on the lookout because she's doing amazing things. And I cannot wait to see all the other things. So let's take it. Let's go back into this image. We spoke a lot about you being so cute when you were a baby. You got so much attention from your family. Then in school, you, like, wanted to be the star you use, that you had a voice, you got some jobs because you you I think you say to yourself, like, correct me if I'm wrong, but like, you are a pretty girl. You still are just like you are. You still are. And so like, let's not kid ourselves. Like, you also have to look a certain way to be in these scenarios. So what is your take on the image? Like we talk about we spoke about this a tiny bit before we talk about beauty. And when people think of beauty, they're like, oh, it's just makeup, lashes, hair, a wig and a dress. Like, it's so stupid, but it's so important when you're talking about especially like in the music industry, in the beauty industry, like modeling TV, even it's Haddock's, which I know you're going to do. And we're going to talk about that as well. But like that matters the way you show up to the world, the impact that you make. People do judge you by your first impression. So I want to hear your take on this, because you built a business on the image and how you present yourself, not only like your physical, but like your brand. You are very branded on all platforms. Hala Tala: [00:26:42] Yeah, I think that's a great question. And something that I just want to say that's unique to my situation is that like in middle school and even high school, I wasn't considered like, oh, she's like a pretty girl in school. And that's because everybody was white and I look different. And so, like, actually nobody saw my beauty. And I look back at the pictures, I'm like, well, I look kind of the same. I look, why didn't I get. So it was the 9/11 thing as well. But like also I just think that I look different. I wasn't a blonde hair, blue eyed girl, and those were all the the girls that everybody thought was pretty. But once I got to college and it was like really diverse, all of a sudden I was like a very pretty girl and then hot and seven and whatever. So it's funny because it's like I didn't get that kind of sexual attention a lot in middle school and high school, which I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing. But whatever in terms of image, I think it's what you want to put out there to the world. I feel like a lot of it is a lot of really good marketing strategy is knowing your brand, knowing your colors, knowing your fans, being consistent. I have a really aesthetic. I taught myself, had a graphic design, and I feel like all of that has a lot to do with it. I had a blog sites. I've written over four thousand blogs, so really know how to write a story. And I think like. Me, for the first couple of years of young and profiting, I was the one writing on my social posts and basically being able to scale that so that my team can kind of learn the different formulas that I would use in terms of my storytelling and how I'd write my posts and the different things I would talk about. Hala Tala: [00:28:14] I also think just knowing your story really well, one of the things that I do is for all my clients and myself, we create story journals, so I'll take all their podcast episodes, just like what I'm doing right now when they guest on shows and we'll transcribe them and we'll get all their little stories and start to put together a journal so that our team can kind of pull from them and ghostwrite on their behalf all these different little stories that they have. And I think it's important to know your stories. And if you haven't really took time to sit down and write them all out, you should. And then you have a foundation for a book or something. If you want to write that in the future because you have all your stories in one place and then you kind of know how to articulate them well and things like that. And I think just knowing what you stand for, like a young and profiting, I feel like, you know, I stand for success. I stand for wellness. I stand for bettering yourself or learning how to make money for being your own boss, for learning how to side hustle, learning how to be an entrepreneur like those are all the pillars of my brand. And I think it's about talking about those pillars and monitoring what you put on social media so that it's not so random, I think that's the key. It's like be strategic about it. Think about it a bit. And then and then, like, release your stuff. Elizabeth Molina: [00:29:23] I love that, I love your. I never heard about that, taking the content and making stories out of it. I'm like, I need your help. This is so good. This is so good. So so what is your take on beauty and image? Like, what do you what does that mean to you? Hala Tala: [00:29:42] Beauty and image. Yeah. I am somebody who likes to be put together, and I think that it's important for you to have good hygiene and it's important for you to look presentable and it's important for you to look the part. And it's also scientifically proven. I'll give you guys an example. There's something called the Texas crosswalk study. You know, jaywalking is illegal, but if you put a bunch of strangers together and a guy in a suit starts jaywalking, everybody will follow him. But if a guy in shorts and a tank top or somebody who was wearing like dirty shoes or shoes, shoes with holes in them or something starts walking across a crosswalk, no one's following him. And that's because people are obedient to people who look polished, who look presentable and things like that. And so you actually portray more confidence both internally yourself and outwardly when you look your best. And it really depends on how you feel. So like if you feel great in jeans and a T-shirt and that's what you feel most competent, and then everybody else is going to feel your confidence and you're going to give them permission to, like, follow you. That was my human behavior explanation Elizabeth Molina: [00:30:54] For why I'm like, that's so scientifical. So what is it? What does it mean to you? Like, OK, let's take away the scientific part, just like a hollow like on a day off. Like, what does beauty mean to you? Hala Tala: [00:31:08] Beauty means that I feel comfortable in my skin, that I feel confidence, that I'm not shy to have the camera on. And I feel like I'm looking my best. I've had a little bit of time to fix myself. I love wearing makeup and it's not necessarily for anyone else. I really just love doing that. And I'm a very girly girl. So like, I love doing my hair. I love doing my makeup. I take care of my skin. I always go get facials and all that and everybody's different. I know a lot of beautiful girls that are very natural and don't do any of that stuff. But it's like I also find it like fun, you know? So I think it just depends on who you are. And I think beauty, like as cliche as it sounds, is definitely the eyes of the beholder. I just think as long as you feel comfortable and confident, that's what beauty is. Elizabeth Molina: [00:31:58] Just to follow a follow up question for you, do you think that, like the way that you grew up, like you said, you grew up in a town that was mostly white and I could relate to your story as being a model, like back then at the age of five, going on casting calls. And I'm the only little girl with brown hair, brown eyes. And here I am auditioning for a Tropicana or Kellogg's. And I'm like, why aren't I getting the part? I'm better than these girls. I can cry on demand. But what's happening here? And then, you know, they said, you don't have the American look. And so, like, I can relate to you on that end. But growing up and it's from a different culture, like beauty is different in every culture. So, like, did that clash with you in any way in terms of you growing up in in your home and being confident and then going outside on like that? Nobody else looks like me. And then all of a sudden you're trending because Kim Kardashian is. And so like now. Hala Tala: [00:32:47] Exactly. It's like it's like all of a sudden Kim was hot and then it was like, oh, well, it's hot. You know, something that you guys should note is that like in college. So when everything was going well, when I was like Miss Popular and all the frat boys would try to make me like the princess of their frat or whatever it was at the same time. So I was like basically like homecoming queen at NJT. Like, you could put me in that box, you know, I was the most popular girl on my class, all that kind of stuff before I dropped out. And at the same time, I was like hated by the Arabic community. They my friends, my childhood best friends. Growing up, I wasn't allowed to be in their weddings. My best friends that I slept over the house every weekend as a kid when they got married in their twenties because they were from conservative families who married them off when they were in their twenties. I wasn't allowed to be in their wedding. And it was because people thought that I dress too slutty, that I was going partying, that I was drinking, that maybe I was, you know, just being too wild, that I was dating boys. And in the Arabic community, even though we were in America, it was like more conservative. And so here I was like finally like accepted in school. And then the Arabic community rejected me, which is just so strange. You know, now I look now I'm just like, ha ha. Like now like I'm the most successful one at all, you bitches. Right? But like so like I was ostracized by the Arabic community in New Jersey. But honestly, I really was not that bad. Like, I was just a normal college girl. I was going out to parties. I was wearing short dresses and I was drinking once in a while and wasn't that crazy, like, you know. But they treated me as if I was like some like cocaine addict, a heroin addict or something like, you know, I got. Elizabeth Molina: [00:34:45] Whatever, yeah, no, no, no, and that's a good story, and I wanted to talk about that because a lot of times, like we live in America, this is a melting pot and we come from different cultures. And sometimes our cultures say one thing like mentioned to you, like with my dad and modelling, my dad was like prostitutes, prosit. Like he would like I could. I still don't wear red nail polish or any kind of bright colors because my father has like, instilled this in my brain that like that is for like a naughty girl and you can't be naughty and like you'll never find me with red. Like it's always like some sort of nude or like white is like the most that I'll do. And I feel like I'm having anxiety about it. Hala Tala: [00:35:23] And I feel like there's so many things that probably have impacted me in a similar way. It's so sad. Like, you know, like boys don't have to deal with any of this. No. Like, I remember my cousins in Palestine messaging me, telling me, like, we're ashamed to have you in our family. Because I was like went to a party in college, like literally like that kind of messaging, like from my own family even. And so like I so like that's why, like, now I could give two craps what anybody thinks about me, because I've been burned so many times, like just burned so many times. And so like I just have like the thickest skin, like you really can't get to me. Elizabeth Molina: [00:36:06] I want our listeners to hear the resiliency, to hear like you crack the formula before the formula cracked you. And what I mean by that is you just said I got burned so many times that it no longer burn. There's nothing to burn, like there's nothing. It's like a threat, like a rope I'm imagining. And you keep on burning it, burning it, and then like it's just thinning out. And then there's like nothing like the fire could be there, but there's nothing to burn. And like when you can get yourself there mentally strong, nothing can stop you. And that makes sense because you have been unstoppable. But I want to take it back to your family a little bit and talk about covid. So let's fast forward back to twenty twenty covid. Let's talk about and if it's OK, it's too much like we can. We don't have to talk about it. But I want to talk about the impact that you have that your dad had on you growing up as a girl, because I know that he was like this force. He was big and supporting people in your family. He was like that person like that. Yeah. Foundation for everyone. And for you, I'm sure, like, he modeled that for you and kind of feel like you are kind of passing he passed the baton to you as like the female version of that. But I just want to make sure that I'm not just putting those ideas. Hala Tala: [00:37:19] I know it's true. My dad was amazing. So I felt like I would not be who I am, where I am without my dad. My dad was always like, remember when I said, like, the whole Arab community was against me and we in my own family, but never my dad, never my dad, you know? And so, like, he always supported me, always treated me like an equal, always told me I was a star. I always said, follow your dreams like that, kind of that kind of a guy. So my dad grew up in Palestine and during war he was a farmer's son and he had no light growing up. And he used to study on his walks to school where he had light and he was really smart. And he ended up getting a scholarship to Egypt's, got a scholarship to med school, came to America, became a surgeon, then was chief of surgery, opened up medical centers and became really, really successful. And he put all my cousins through college, all his kids through college really wasn't a flashy guy. Like even though he was very, very successful, he would like go shop at Sears. And he spent all his money, like giving it to orphans and people who who needed money to go to college. Because his main thing was like, everybody gave me a scholarship. That's how I'm so successful. So I want to make sure that I can give as many people an opportunity, the same way that I got an opportunity when I was younger. Elizabeth Molina: [00:38:34] And like literally that's what he dedicated most of his life to, was, you know, fundraising for people to go to college in Palestine and then also sending everybody to school and everything like that. So he was amazing. And such a hard worker was writing a million bucks, doing a million research projects, super ambitious, very like into politics. We would have host dinners with like Hillary Clinton when I was younger and like stuff like that. And he he was great. He was just like such a great guy, great community guy, great family man. And so in March, I got a call. I was living in Brooklyn with my boyfriend and my sister called me up and she's like, call up mom and dad have covid. And at the time I was so me and my boyfriend were crazy about not getting covid. I would like go to the grocery store with, like, glasses and masks. Gloves. I was wearing a mask on the train since I think February. I was I was the only person where I used to work at Disney streaming services. So I'd go from Brooklyn to to New York City. And for a long time I was the only person wearing a mask on the train. Hala Tala: [00:39:37] I was warning everybody about it. So I was like, Miss, like, I'm never getting covid and I'm doing everything in my power not to get covered. And then I got the call mom and I've covered and I was begging them, I they got covid because my dad had like has diabetes and he was still going to the doctor for like checkups and I was begging them to stop. But anyway, they got covid and I came home and, you know, I decided I was going to come home. I ended up staying home for three months when I thought it was I didn't know what to expect. I thought it was going to die honestly, because nobody had gotten covid at that point. So it's like I come home. My mom and dad are sick, my brother is sick. Me and my sister are like in full gear. My sister's a doctor. So she's like she was like the doctor role. And then my job was like custodian. And I was just like cooking, cleaning and just trying to take care of my family. But it was like miserable. Like we were wearing a mask eight like up until the moment we slept, me and my sister were because it was really scary at the time. Elizabeth, like, we didn't know that it was just mouth to mouth. So I was like spraying the. Elizabeth Molina: [00:40:41] Cultures with alcohol, spring, everything with alcohol, and it's like we didn't know if we could take off our masks, we didn't know if you could touch our eyes or a mouth and like so it would be like all day taking care of the family. Everybody was sick. My dad was, like, extremely sick. And then, like, we would come downstairs in the basement and like, I couldn't even go get blankets from upstairs because we just thought everything was contaminated. And so we were using, like, old blankets in the basement. I was eating like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every night. And, like, the only thing I would eat would be at like 11:00 p.m. once we were done with everything because we were afraid to eat the food upstairs. It was it was insane. Anyway, my dad got sicker and sicker and sicker and then know he was basically unresponsive. And like we had we tried bringing an oxygen machine home. Like, the last thing we wanted to do was take him to the hospital. And then finally we called the ambulance to take him to the hospital. And he looked at us like, please, like, I'm never going to see you guys again. And we were like, no, you will like and then they will go away. And honestly, that's the last time I ever saw him alive. And I was we weren't allowed to visit him in the hospital. Hala Tala: [00:41:44] I got covid. And even though we got covid, they still wouldn't let us go see him, even though he was in the hospital for like a month, maybe like six weeks, and they would not let us go in the hospital. He ended up passing away on May 15th. Twenty twenty. And to me, I think the most traumatic part of that was the fact that for somebody who was so generous, like literally like an angel, like he used to do surgery. So he was a general and vascular surgery. He used to do surgeries for free all the time for people like he saved so many freaking lives. That guy, you know, he was such a good guy. He would like do charity cases all the time and then like for a doctor, nonetheless, who saved lives to, like, had to die alone and like without his family and like, they wouldn't let us see us until he died. It's like I got to go to my dad's hospital room after he was dead. You know, it's like I couldn't even say goodbye. And like, to me, that was definitely the worst part of it all. Like, it's one thing to lose your father. Everybody is going to lose. Everybody is going to die. Everybody's going to lose someone. It was more like not saying goodbye, Elizabeth Molina: [00:42:51] Especially with your dad being this person, just this human. It just sounds like an angel. Like as you were describing him, I was getting I was like, I'm not going to cry. One hundred percent. Talk about that, because during that, you were so launching your company. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. So like that whole part. Hala Tala: [00:43:30] Yeah. So so what happened was I was working at Disney streaming and while my dad was in the hospital, I would literally try to be on Zoom constantly, like they would let us be on Zoom. And so Disney was like horrible company culture, right? I was my dad was like literally dying and like I was expected to be on every call, every whatever. And so I would work all day, even though I, like, had covid and like was probably still getting over covid all that shit. So I'd work. I'll be on my meetings and I'd have my dad on my iPad on Zoom and in between my meetings I would like talk to him, I'd sing to him. I couldn't know if he heard me or not, but like I would literally was on Zoome with him twenty four hours a day as long as they let me do it. I was on the phone with him while he was in the hospital at least. But I don't know if you could hear me or whatever because he was really unresponsive. So anyway, finally I was in this meeting and my mom calls me and she's like, holla. Like they said that dad's like dying and like we have 20 minutes to get to the hospital and like, if we want to see him and say goodbye. And so we I just was like, close all my stuff and like ran to the hospital, like we drove to the hospital and then they called us on the way. And so that he had passed away. And then so like when I got there, he was like had just died and so. I just I remember they would only let us go up one by one, which, like, sucked, it's like I didn't even get to, like, say goodbye with my family, you know? And so it's like they only let us go up one by one. And so it's like I went up there and I remember telling him, like. It's everything that you did is not in vain, you know. Now I'm going to make it. Elizabeth Molina: [00:45:07] So don't say sorry, don't say sorry, because this needs to be heard, it needs to come out like this is your dad is still here and president like I just wanted you to know and everyone listening because you're not the only one, right? Hala Tala: [00:45:24] Yeah, 100 percent. And if I tell that story, it's for everybody else. I mean, I just told you, listen, you gave me so much opportunity. I'm going to make sure that everybody knows our name. Everybody knows your name, everybody knows my name and like and I got you. And we're going to and everything's going to change and that I'm going to make a difference the same way that you made a difference. And so I just promised him that. And I just I remember I was like screaming in the hospital, like, I promise I'm going to make you proud. I'm going to make you proud. Everything's like everything that you ever wish for me is going to come true. And a lot of it did already. So it's just really cool that, you know, sometimes death is a great motivator. You realize that like. Life is limitless, and I was really working hard before that, but it just made me like, you know, put myself first and really, really work hard and focus and and I just used it as a way to, like, launch myself, because then when my dad was in the hospital, I started a business called Yapp Media. And Heather Monahan is one of my mentors. And basically I was like, just I'm always so helpful to everyone. Elizabeth Molina: [00:46:30] So I'm always, like, hopping on calls and teaching people stuff and just being helpful. That's like my personality. And so this lady had the money and she's like this big influencer on LinkedIn. She was like, your stuff is so good, your marketing is so good. I want to learn from you. And so I would go on these calls with her. And and at the time I had all these volunteers working for Young and Profiting podcast and we were in a select channel. And so I had like 10 people who just wanted to work for free for me and slack. And so I was showing Heather our channel and showing her our social schedule. I was showing her Cannava and like headliner and all these different processes we had. And she was just so impressed. And she was like, I want to be your client. Like, you have a little marketing agency. You don't realize it. I want to be your first client. And so I was like, OK, like, I'll do a couple of videos for you. And like, literally, I charged her like five hundred dollars a month and I was like, this is never going to scale. Like I'm never going to make money doing this. My next client was like a 30 k a month client and then it was just like, boom, everything just like blew up. Hala Tala: [00:47:30] And now I have 40 employees. We're making almost two million in revenue in our first year. I've got like ten huge clients. The company is growing so fast. My podcast went from getting like three thousand downloads, amounts to like one hundred and fifty thousand downloads a month. I landed the cover of Podcasts magazine. It's just like my whole life, just like all of a sudden just skyrocketed in terms of like my success, like it was slow and steady for the fact that, like, I did grow big LinkedIn following and I did put in a lot of work and I had a lot of episodes. But it's like this summer, like had all that time at home and like had this fuel of my father dying and him being such a great man and so successful and me feeling like I need to live up to that and like, do him right. Plus I think his guidance, you know, from the stars, maybe he, like, you know, hooked me up a bit. I have no idea how I landed podcast, magazine. I don't think I deserved it at the time, but maybe I did. And it's like, you know, you're always so hard on yourself. Elizabeth Molina: [00:48:32] You definitely deserved it. No one. Right, like being on the cover and all your success. Your dad literally pass that on to you and his legacy legacy is living on through. So I just wanted to acknowledge you and like, let people know that about you because I feel like we always get this strong. Hello. At the NBA, who worked at Disney? Who worked out here, who you know, all these things that great. Great. You Hot 97, you were a singer. You were going to audition, you were going to do MTV. Like, who knows what else. You're not telling us. Right. But we don't hear this holler. We don't hear the feminine soft holler. Who what fuels her. Who is she was what she about. This is what she's about. Like, there's a lot to her. We all have layers. And I'm so glad that you came on the podcast and we're like open to it and like, made us cry. Yeah. Hala Tala: [00:49:18] I told you a lot of juicy stuff. Elizabeth Molina: [00:49:20] What how would you see yourself, like, impacting your family, your community and your niece? Who's watching you? She's watching the strong woman grow up like I want to know, talk, tell me, like, what are you thinking? Hala Tala: [00:49:32] Yeah. I mean, when I said when I was growing up, there was no Arabic women who were doing anything, you know what I mean? It's like if you're an Arabic woman, you were covered. You probably were a housewife. Like I had no like nobody to look up to. And so I'm so happy that I can be this, like, Americanized Arabic woman who's, you know, professional. And I've got a great company and brand and podcast and just influencing so many people. And I feel like it's only going to get bigger and bigger, especially the trajectory that we're on and and the rate at which the company and podcast is growing and all my social channels and things like that. So I'm just excited that my niece, who's half Chinese, half Palestinian, is going to grow up having somebody who at least like sort of looks like her, somebody that you can look up to you that's not a doctor or an engineer or a lawyer. And you know that you can be successful taking your own path. And I love the fact that right now I'm literally living my dream. Hala Tala: [00:50:35] When I was working in corporate, it was all because I was trying to fit into a box that everybody wanted me to be in. And yeah, I was doing great because I made it my own thing and used my personality traits to be good at my corporate job. But now that I'm a full time entrepreneur and I've got my focus is my podcast and content and this marketing agency, it's just amazing. Like to wake up and do what I want to do every day, like be on a podcast like this in the middle of the day, like, you know, and just have this awesome come. Association, what I want to represent my niece is like I want her to know that you can follow your dreams and anything that you believe can happen if you really work hard and if you believe in yourself and believe in your talents and believe that life is limitless. And I always say this like, you have to believe that life has no limits. As soon as I really, really went back to that thinking, it's like everything 10x for me. Elizabeth Molina: [00:51:26] So I want to ask you I ask all my guests. Are you familiar with the beauty circle? Hala Tala: [00:51:32] I know that you emailed me so I can pull it up. Elizabeth Molina: [00:51:36] Yeah. So basically it's a circle that I use with my clients and it's kind of like how I I'm a little bit sneaky about the work that I do. People come to me for the image and then there's more, there's more to life like holistic. There's science, there's like a whole a whole bunch of little categories that I get. Really, it could be superficial or it could be like really deep. Like I can go into, like, quantum physics on a specific topic. Right. But I just always gauge where my clients are at. So I always ask my guests in the beauty circle, there's ten different categories. Where do you find yourself excelling in currently and where do you find yourself maybe needing a little bit of extra love? Hala Tala: [00:52:14] Yeah, so I would say sleep is where I struggle and relationships is actually probably where I try for people who don't know me like I am all about collaboration and communities and like I'm always building a network even when I'm not trying to like I wanted to start young and profiting podcast as a one man band. Like, I just want it to be me. And I have 50 employees now. And from episode two, I had my first and I had my first volunteer. And then by episode eight, I had ten volunteers and it was all natural. I didn't pay anyone. And when I had sort of hip hop, I had probably one hundred girls in and out of that fifty at the height of it. And I was the president. And again, it was like people who just wanted to follow this movement. When I worked at HP, I was president of the Young Employee Network and I led like, you know, all these people at my office. Then I was president of my alumni association. So like always like becoming the leader, always becoming like the networker. I have like a podcast mastermind now community. You know what? I would get fans who would reach out to me and be like, I just want to work for you. And then so I just started Aslak Slack channels like, OK, come join our SELEK and you want to I'll teach you how to do an audiogram and you could just keep doing that each week. And then I would give everybody these little projects. And now the volunteers who worked for my show are now like team leaders that have like all teams under them, which is amazing. Not like these volunteers that work for free for me for about a year now are getting like half salaries and quit their jobs and work for Yapp. So and they're following their dreams because that's what they wanted to do. They wanted to work for free at one point. So they obviously had dreams. Elizabeth Molina: [00:53:51] Why do what is a message that you would have told your younger self from the hollow that you are today like college today has a time machine. And she went back to like Tommy like right when 9/11 happened. I feel like that was a very crucial point in your life where things pivoted and you felt like ostracized, like to what would you tell that halwa? Hala Tala: [00:54:10] So this is what I would tell anybody who's young and like still finding their way is. Think about your rejections and realize that if a gatekeeper is telling, you know, you actually need to create your own lane, create your own path. So I'll give you guys all the different examples. I worked at seven for three years. I basically was slave work for free every single day. It wasn't about convincing Angie Martinez to hire me. That's not what changed my life. What changed my life is I decided to take it into my own power and start my website. And then that made me on the same playing field as the deejay's and the same Jesus who wouldn't pay me minimum wage, put me on the flyers and I would promote their parties and make just as much money as I'm promoting parties because I decided to create my own lane. Then again, MTV. Decided not to air the show. I decided, OK, again, I'm going to focus this negative energy on creating my own path and I decided that like getting my MBA and getting a 4.0 and getting a great job was going to be that lane. Right. Then again, something happened at HP where I wasn't given a promotion to be the president of the Global Young Employee Network that I just mentioned before. Hala Tala: [00:55:20] And that's why I started, which I started. Yeah. And then they wouldn't let me be the global president because the H.R. person didn't like me. And then she left the company a month later. But like long story, it's just the same shit. Like, I didn't get a promotion that I absolutely deserved and was absolutely the most qualified for again. I started my own thing, and that was Young and profiting podcast, and now I'm literally one of the most successful female podcasters in the world right now. And it's only because I was rejected and I decided to pivot and start my own thing that I own that nobody can tell me yes or no, that the success of my growth depends on me and what I put into it. And so, like, if you're a hard worker, if you know that you have talents like don't wait for someone to give you the permission to be that person. Like I waited three years for Angie to give me permission to just have a job. So that's what I that's the advice that I'd give is like really just pay attention to your rejections and figure out how you could do it on your own if you can. Ember.js powers a SaaS company he co-founded, Yapp, and they funded their business for a couple of years doing Ember consulting under the Yapp Labs moniker. They're full-time on product now, and his engineering team at Yapp (currently 3 people) maintains around 6 Ember apps. Luke helps to maintain a bunch of popular addons, including ember-cli-deploy, ember-modal-dialog, ember-wormhole, ember-tether, and more. Transcript: CHARLES: Hello and welcome to The Frontside Podcast, a place where we talk about user interfaces and everything that you need to know to build them right. My name is Charles Lowell, a developer here at the Frontside. With me also co-hosting today is Taras Mankovsky. Hey, Taras. TARAS: Hello, everyone. CHARLES: Today, we have three special guests that we're going to be talking to. We have Aaron Chambers, Luke Melia, and Mattia Gheda who originally met collaborating on fantastic open source library that we, at the Frontside, have used many, many times that saved us countless hours, saved our clients hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more. ember-cli-deploy. We're gonna be talking not about that library in particular but around the operations that happen around UI. So, welcome you all. LUKE: Thanks, it's great to be here. CHARLES: Like I said, I actually am really excited to have you all on because when we talk about the platform that you develop your UI on, something that often gets short shrift in communities outside of the Ember community is how do I actually deliver that application into users' hands. Because obviously, we don't want it to be working just on our laptop. We want it to be delivered to our users and there are myriad ways that that can happen and it's only gotten more complex since the last time we talked which must have been like three or four years ago. I kind of just have to ask, I think that what you all were talking about then was cutting edge is still cutting edge now but there must have been some pretty incredible developments like in the last three or four years. What have been kind of the new insights that you all have? LUKE: I think that what we realized as we got started with ember-cli-deploy and a project kind of came together as a combination of a few different open source efforts, something that Aaron was working on, something that our collaborator Mike was working on. We decided to come together under one umbrella, joined forces. And what we realized pretty soon is that deployment needs vary a ton between companies. And so, we are coming from this background in Ember community where we had this attitude where nobody is a special snowflake. We all kind of have the same needs for 90% of what we do. And that's true. I really believe in a lot of that Ember [ethos]. But when it comes to deployment, you know what? A lot of companies are special snowflakes or it's at least is much more fragmented than kind of our needs around on the JavaScript side. And so, what we decided to do was to try to evolve ember-cli-deploy into a platform essentially, an ecosystem that could let people mix and match plug-ins to do in their organization without locking them into an opinion that might simply be a non-starter in their org. CHARLES: It's hard enough to have opinions just around the way that your JavaScript code is structured but when it comes to rolling out your app, it really does encompass the entire scope of your application. So, it has to take account of your server. It has to take account of your user base. It has to take account of all the different processes that might be running all over, distributed around the Internet. Maybe somewhere on AWS, maybe somewhere on Legacy servers but it has to consider that in its entirety. So, it's having opinions that span that scope is particularly difficult. LUKE: Yes. And so, you mentioned a bunch of technical details which are absolutely forcing factors for a lot of words in how they do their deployments but what we found in talking to people that there are also people in political aspects to deployment in many cases. Engineers kind of own the JavaScript code that's running within their app, more or less. But when it comes to pushing the app into the world and a lot of companies, that means they're interacting with sysadmins, ops folks, people who have very strong opinions about what is an allowable and supportable way to get those deployments done and to have that stuff exist in production. And so, we needed to come up with an architecture that was going to support all these kind of varied use cases. And so, we came up with this system of essentially a deployment pipeline and plugins that can work at various stages of that pipeline. And that ecosystem has now grown quite a bit. It's actually, I don't know Aaron if you and Mattia would agree but I think it's probably the best decision that we made in this project because that ecosystem has grown and evolved without us needing to do a ton of work in maintenance. And it's been really great. I think Mattia, you pulled some of the current numbers there. MATTIA: Yeah. I pulled some numbers just yesterday and we have currently 150 different plugins attached to themselves, to different parts of the pipeline. So some of them are about how to build the assets, some of them are about how to compress them, some of them are about shipping. And they allow people to ship it with different ways like we are seeing [inaudible] with just simply Amazon APIs or Azure APIs and some of them even are about just how to visualize data about your deployments or how to give feedback to the user about what was deployed and represent the information. And then this is kind of a bit more detail, probably specific to us but we also added this idea of plugin packs. So, in order to help people define their deployment story, we created this ideal of plugin packs. Plugin packs are simply group of plugins. So, plugins grouped together. As a user, if you want to implement what we call a deploy strategy, you can simply install a plugin pack and that will give you all the plugins that allow you to deploy in a specific way. And that's kind of like an optimization that we added just to make it easier for people to share deployment strategies, share ways of deploying applications. CHARLES: Right. It's almost like an application within the framework. MATTIA: Yeah, exactly. But to stay on the community side, I think that the interesting part about what Luke was saying which was a great success for us is that all we maintain as the core team for this project is the core infrastructure, so the pipeline and a thousand of plugins. Everything else is community-based. And often, even in my day-to-day work, I end up using plugins that I didn't write and that I don't even maintain. But because the underpinning of it were designed especially by Luke and I are flexible enough. It just like has been very, very stable and very, very reliable for many years. So, I will say definitely the idea of like in the spirit of what Ember is, I guess, creating a shared ecosystem where people can add what they want and extend what was provided has been the one single biggest win of this project. CHARLES: One of the things that I'm curious about is we've talked about how you're allowing for and kind of embracing the fragmentation that happens in people's kind of the topology of their infrastructure. What do you see is the common threads that really bind every single good deployment strategy together? MATTIA: My biggest thing here, and we actually have some shared notes about this, but my biggest thing about this is the idea that building and deploying an application for me is divided into three parts. There's building part where you have to decide how to compile your JavaScript application and how to produce some sort of artifact. There is the shipping part where it's about deciding where you're going to put the artifact. And then there is the serving part which is how you show it and deliver it to your users. I think that these three are the underpinnings of any deploy strategy. What we did with this project is just acknowledging that and give each one of these a place. And so, the entirety of what we do in what Luke defined as a pipeline is simply give you a way to customize how you build, customize how you ship, and then customize how you serve. So yeah, I think that that's kind of the root. And the question that everybody that wants to deploy a modern JavaScript application have to ask themselves is how do I want to build it, how do I want to ship it, and how will I serve it to my users. And these things are completely independent one from the order in the sense that you can have something build it, something ship it and something serve it, and that's what we end up doing in most of our deployments, I find. CHARLES: It's good to think about those things as soon as you possibly can and make sure that you have all three of those bases covered really before you start adding a whole ton of features. TARAS: Sprint 0, right? LUKE: In Agile, we call Sprint 0 the phase the thing you do right in the beginning. You've got a skeleton of an app and then you get the deployment infrastructure going, you have the test infrastructure going, so that there is no task within your actual feature development where you have to do those things. And I think that can be a valuable concept to embrace. I would just add to Mattia's three points that for deployments, to me, some very simple qualities of a good deployments are repeatability. You need to be able to reliably and consistently run your deployment process. Sounds simple but there's plenty of operations that have run up way too long on manual deployments. So, we don't want to see those rollback capabilities if you have a deployment that you realize was a mistake right after it gets into production. I'm sure none of us have ever experienced that. CHARLES: That never happens to me. LUKE: You want to have a method to roll that code back. That's something that can be remarkably complex to do. And so, having some guardrails and some support mechanisms to do that like ember-cli-deploy provides can be really useful. But whatever your approach is, I think that's a necessary quality. And then I think we start to step into kind of more advanced capabilities that a good deployment architecture can provide when we start to think about things like personalization, A/B testing, feature flags, these kinds of things. And that requires more sophistication, but you cannot build that on a deployment foundation that's not solid. AARON: I think for me, one of the things I've been really thinking about a lot lately, it's a bit of a mindset shift, I think, to get to where the things Mattia was talking about separating those different parts of deployment. And so, I really start to realize the traditional mindset around deployments like I build some stuff and I ship it to the server and then the users get it. But if we can actually stop and actually split our understanding of deployment into two separate phases. One is the building and the physical shipping of the files; and the other one's actually making them available to people. You open up this whole world of our features that you wouldn't normally have. So to be able to actually physically put stuff in production but not yet have it active, as in users don't see it yet but you can preview those versions in production against production databases. And then at some point after the fact, decide, "Okay, I'm now going to route all my users to this new thing," And to be able to do that really easily is massively, massively powerful. And so, to me, the thing I've been thinking about lately is it is a small mindset shift away from packaging everything up and pushing and overwriting what's currently there to being something, again like Luke said, immutable deployments where everything we build and ship sits next to all the other versions and we just decide which one we want to use to look at it any time which leads into then, I guess, A/B testing, feature flags and things. So I guess deployment really is not so much about the physical shipping, that's one part of it. To me, deployment now is shipping of stuff, as in physical deployment and then the releasing it or enabling it or activating it to users. CHARLES: Or routing it. Sounds like what you're describing is an extraordinarily lightweight process. AARON: It is, yeah. CHARLES: To actually route traffic to those files. AARON: It is. It's incredibly lightweight. That's the amazing thing about it. When you think about it, you're building a few JavaScript files and CSS files and images and putting them on a CDN, and then you just need a tiny web server that basically decides which version of the app you want to serve to people. There's not much to it at all, really. CHARLES: I mean that's absolutely fascinating, though the capability that you have when you have the ability to have these versions, the same versions or different versions of your application sitting along next to each other and being able to route traffic. But it also seems to me like it introduces a little bit of complexity around version matching because only certain versions are going to be compatible with certain versions of your API. You have different versions of your API talking to the -- so the simplicity of having kind of mutable deployments, so to speak, is that everything is in sync and you don't have to worry about those version mismatches. Is that a problem or this could just be me worrying about nothing? But that's kind of the thing that just immediately jumps out to me is like are there any strategies to manage that complexity? LUKE: To me, what you're describing, I kind of think of as a feature not a bug. And what I mean by that is that it is very simple to have a mental model of, "Oh, I have a version of my JavaScript code that works with this version of my API." And as long as I kind of deploy those changes together, I'm good to go. The reality is that that's impossible. The JavaScript apps that we write today, people are using anywhere from two seconds at a time to two days at a time. It's not uncommon these days to have some of these dashboard apps. People literally live-in for their job eight hours a day, nine hours a day, keep the browser tab open and come in the next morning and continue. And so, obviously there are some mechanisms we could use to force them to reload that kind of thing. But at some point in most apps, you're going to have a slightly older version of your JavaScript app talking to a slightly newer version of your API for either the span of a minute or perhaps longer depending on their strategies. So to me, the process of thinking about that and at least being aware of that as an engineer thinking about how your code is going to get from your laptop into the world, I think it's an important step that we not paper over that complexity and that we kind of embrace it and say, "Hey, this is part of life." And so, we need to think about just like we need to think about how your database migrations get into production. That's not something that you can paper over and just have a process that it's going to take care of for you. It requires thought. And I think that this, in the same token, how different versions of your JavaScript app are going to interact with your API requires thought. An exact parallel also had different versions of a native mobile app that go into the app store. How did those interact with different versions of your API? So, I think you're right. There's complexity there. There's ways that we can try to mitigate... CHARLES: Keep repeating ourselves if we think that that [inaudible] actually doesn't exist even in the simple case? MATTIA: Yeah. I think that that's to reiterate what Luke is saying. That's exactly the point. You can pretend it's not there but it is and you have no way to avoid it. Once you ship something to a browser, you have no control over it anymore. And so, you have to assume that somebody is going to be using it. LUKE: Aaron, I think you too, I don't know if you can share it. But you recently told us some stories about kind of what you encountered in your work about this and of how long people were using versions and stuff. AARON: Yeah. Something that we hadn't sort of put a lot of thought into. But the last place I worked at, we had quite a long lived app and we're using feature flags and we're using launch [inaudible] something and it gives you a list of flags and when they were last requested. And there were also flags that we removed from the code and it was just a matter of waiting until all the users had the most current version of the app and weren't requesting the flag anymore. But this one flag just kept getting requested for months and we just could not work out why. It really sort of opened my eyes up to this exact problem that these long lived apps set in the browser and if you have someone that just doesn't reload the browser or restart the machine or anything, your app can live a lot longer than maybe you actually realize it is. So we're shipping bug fixes, we're shipping new features, and we're all patting ourselves in the back. We fixed this bug but have we really? If your users haven't reloaded the app and gotten the latest version, then you haven't actually fixed the bug for some number of people. And it's really hard to tell them as you think about this and put things in place, really hard to tell what versions are out in the world, how many people are using this buggy version still. CHARLES: Yeah, that's an excellent point. I haven't even thought about that. I mean, what is the countermeasure? AARON: We hadn't made it until we came across [crosstalk]. CHARLES: It's nothing quite like getting smacked in the face of the problem to make you aware of it. AARON: That's right. CHARLES: So, what's the strategy to deal with that? AARON: I guess for me, my learnings from that would be from very early on thinking about how we're going to encourage people to reload, to start with, and maybe even have the ability to force a reload and what that means but then that has gotchas as well. You don't want to just reload something when a user is in the middle of writing a big essay or something like that. But definitely thinking about it from the start is one of the things you've got to think about from the start. But I guess something that I'd like to implement and I've kind of thought through but not really explored yet, but the ability to see what versions are out there in the world and there are things I've been thinking about in terms of this little server that serves different versions. Maybe we can start having that kind of tracking what versions are out there and who's using what and being able to see because it would be great to be out to see a live chart or a dashboard or something that sort of shows what versions are out there, which ones we need to be aware of that are still there and even what users are using and what versions they can maybe even move them on, if we need to. But there's definitely a bunch of things that aren't immediately obvious. And I don't know how many people actually think about this early on, but it's critical to actually think about it early on. MATTIA: Yeah. I was going to share what we do which is very similar to what Aaron said just maybe for the listeners to have some context. The first thing you can do is basically what Gmail does, which is every time a web app sends a request, an [inaudible], it will send the version of the app with the request and the backend can check. And the backend can check if you are sending a request from the same version that is the most recent deployed version. And if it's not, this sends back a header and the same way that Gmail does, it will display a pop up that is like, "Hey, we have a new version if you want reload." And on top of that [inaudible] is that we have a dead man's switch. So if we accidentally deploy a broken version, a part of this process, the frontend application tracks in the headers. And if a special header is sent, it force reloads, which is not nice for the user but it's better and sometimes is critical to do so. CHARLES: Right. I remember that was that case where Gmail released something. They were doing something with broken service workers and the app got completely and totally borked. I remember that my Twitter blew up, I don't know, about a year ago I think, and one of the problems I don't think they had was they did not have that capability. MATTIA: I mean, you learned this the hard way sadly. But I think these two things are definitely crucial. And the third one, [inaudible]. I thought, Luke, you had the ability that Aaron was talking about like tracking versions in the world. And I think that's more useful for stats so that you know how often your users update. And then you can make the design decisions based on that and based on how much you want to support in the past. LUKE: Yeah. We haven't implemented that but it reminds me whenever there's a new iOS version, we do a bunch of mobile work in the app and we're always looking at that adoption curve that's published. A few different analytic services publish it and say, "OK. How fast is iOS 12 adoption? How fast are people leaving behind the old versions?" And that helps to inform how much time you're spending doing bug fixes on old version versus just telling people, "Hey, this is fixed in the new OS. Go get it." But if you are able to see that for your own JavaScript apps, I think that would be pretty hot. CHARLES: Yeah. Crazy thought here but it almost makes me wonder if there's something to learn from the Erlang community because this is kind of a similar problem. They solved 20 years ago where you have these very, very long running processes. Some of them there's some telephone servers in Sweden. They've been running for over a decade without the process ever coming down. And yet they're even upgrading the version of Erlang that the VM is running. And they have the capability to even upgrade a function like a recursive function as it's running. And there's just a lot of -- I don't know what the specific lessons are but I wonder if that's an area for study because if there's any community that has locked in on hot upgrade, I feel like it's that one. LUKE: That's a terrific analogy. I bet we could learn a ton. Just hearing that kind of makes me think about how kind of coursed our mental model is about updates to our JavaScript apps. We talked to Aaron, we're talking about kind of this idea of a mutable apps and you have different versions side by side. But the idea of being able to kind of hot upgrade a version with running code in a browser, now that's an ambitious idea. That's something I'd say, "Wow! That kind of thing would be a game changer." CHARLES: Yeah. AARON: Makes me feel like we got a whole bunch of work to do. CHARLES: We welcome them. I'm always happy to give people plenty more work to do. No, but how they manage even being able to do migrations on the memory that's running. I don't know if it's something that's going to be achievable but it sounds kind of like that's the direction that we're heading. LUKE: It does, as these apps get more complex and they continue to live longer. The idea, the work arounds that Mattia mentioned about kind of showing a message and having a dead man's switch, these are all certainly useful. And today, I would say even like the best practice but they were not what you would want to do if you could magically design any system. If you're taking a magical approach, the app will just be upgraded seamlessly as a user was using it. And they would be none the wiser, the bugs would be fixed. End of story. There's no interruption to their workflow. At least for me personally, I don't really think about that as a possibility but I love the Erlang story and analogy and to say maybe that is a possibility, what would it take? I would obviously take a collaboration across your JavaScript framework, perhaps even JavaScript language features and browser runtime features as well as your backend and deployment mechanism. But I think it's a great avenue for some creative thinking. CHARLES: I'm curious because when we're talking about this, I'm imagining the perfect evergreen app but there's also feels like there's maybe even a tension that arises because one of the core principles of good UI is you don't yank the rug out from underneath the user. They need to, at some point and we've all been there when the application does something of its own agency, that feels bad. It feels like, "Nope, this is my workspace. I need to be in control of it." The only way that something should move from one place to the other without me being involved is if it's part of some repeatable process that I kicked off. But obviously, things like upgrading the color of a button or fixing a layout bug, those are things that I'm just going to want to have happen automatically. I'm not going to worry about it. But there is this kind of a gradation of features and at what point do you say, "You know what? Upgrading needs to be something that the user explicitly requires," versus, "This is something that we're just going to push. We're going to make that decision for them." LUKE: Yeah, it's a great question. One of the things that I'm curious what you all think is when you think about the mental model that our users have of working in a browser app, do you think that there is a mental model of, "Oh, when I refresh, I might get a new version." Do people even think about that? Or are they just like your example about a button color changing as kind of a minor thing. I don't even know if I could endure stack. We've all been I think in situations where you do a minor redesign and all of a sudden, all hell breaks loose and users are in revolt. Take the slack icon. So, I think it's a fascinating question. CHARLES: I don't know. What's the answer? Do you always ask for an upgrade just observing? I don't have any data other than observing people around me who use web applications who don't understand how they actually work under the covers. I don't think it's the expectation that this code, this application is living and changing underneath their feet. I think the general perception is that the analogy to the desktop application where you've got the bundled binary and that's the one you're running is that's the perception. AARON: I'd say the difference there is that, and with all these new ways of deploying, we're shipping small things faster in multiple, multiple times a day or even an hour. So it's not the sort of thing you really want time to use. There has been an update, need to upgrade as well. And that's the difference between the desktop mentality. And if that's the mentality they have, it sits quite a bit of a shift, I guess. MATTIA: It makes me think that one of the tools that the users -- if you take a look at the general public, there's probably one tool that everybody can relate to which is Facebook. So, I think if there is a way to say what do people generally expect. There is a business user which I think we are often most familiar with but the general public, probably what they're most familiar with is what happens in Facebook. And I don't use Facebook almost. I haven't used it for a couple of years but I wonder how much of what people experience in Facebook actually impacts the expectations around how applications should behave. LUKE: I think that's a really good question. I do think your underlying point of you have to know your own users I think is an important one also. Obviously, some folks are going to be more technical than others or some audiences will be more technical than others. But I would even question, Charles, your suggestion that people think of it kind of as like a binary that it stays the same until you refresh. I think people have an idea that web apps improve over time or sometimes they get bugs but hopefully that they improve and change over time, and that there is a tradeoff there that means sometimes there's something new to learn but at the same time, you get new features. But I don't know that people necessarily associate that with and it happens when I hit reload or it only happens when I open a new browser, like I don't know that it's that clear for people in their head. CHARLES: Right. I can see that. But the question is if the evolution is too stark, I think people tend to get annoyed. If they're in the middle of a workflow or in the middle of a use case and something changes, then it gives it a feeling of instability and non-determinism which I think can be unsettling. LUKE: Definitely. We all value, as engineers, we value getting into that flow state so much of like, "Oh man, I'm being productive. I don't have any distractions." And you kind of owe that to your users also to be able to let them get into that state with your app and not be throwing up, "Hey, there's new stuff. Reload." "I'm in the middle of something. Sorry." CHARLES: Yeah. I definitely do the same thing. Sometimes, I let iOS be bugging me to upgrade for a month until I finally start to feel guilty about security and actually do the upgrade. LUKE: Right. CHARLES: Although once they started doing it at night, it actually made it a lot better. LUKE: That's an interesting idea, too. I think there's a natural tension between the lower integration risk that we have as the engineering teams of shipping very frequently. Aaron mentioned shipping a dozen times a day. We certainly have been there and done that as well. I would say on average, we ship a few times a day. But the reason that we do that is because we know the faster we get code into production, the faster we can trust it. So it passes all your tests, it passes your [inaudible], but you don't really know if you're being honest. You don't really know until there's thousands of people using it in production. And yet, this conversation makes me think about there is a tension between how frequently you do that versus your users' kind of comfort level and expectations. CHARLES: And maybe there is a thing where you can kind of analyze on a per user basis how often they're active in the application and try to push updates on times that are customized to them. LUKE: Like when a user has been idle for 30 minutes or something like that. CHARLES: Yep. Or even like track trends over months and see when they're most likely to be idle and schedule it for them. LUKE: Good point. CHARLES: Something like that. TARAS: I have an idea. We should introduce screen savers into web apps. And so when the user stops using the app, just turn on screen saver and do the upgrade. LUKE: I can see the VC patch. It's after dark but for the web. CHARLES: Enter install flying toaster. AARON: It does that to open up the idea as well of that automated checking that things are okay well after the fact because it's all right to sit there maybe activate something and sit there even for an hour and make sure there's no bug request coming in. But if no one's actually received your app, then of course it's not going to come in. And it's very easy to kind of move onto the next thing and forget about that. I guess it's not something that I've ever put a lot of time in and I haven't worked anywhere that's had really great automated checking to see is everything still okay. And I guess it's an interesting thing to start thinking about as well an important thing. CHARLES: Like actually bundling in diagnostics in with your application to get really fine grained information about kind of status and availability inside the actual app. AARON: I'm not exactly sure, really. I guess I maybe wasn't thinking about inside the app but I don't know what it looks like exactly. But there is that element of shipping fast and getting stuff out there. But are we really making sure it all works later on when everyone's actually using it. LUKE: Yeah. This by the way, I just wanted to say when we were talking earlier what are the essential qualities around deploying an app. And this reminds me that one thing that we didn't mention but is very simple is your app should have a version. And it should be unique and traceable back to what was the GitHub, git commit that was the origin of that code. It's just a very simple idea but if you're going to be analyzing errors in production when you have multiple different versions of your JavaScript app running, you're going to need to know what version caused this error and then how do I trace it back and make sure that the code that I'm trying to debug is actually the code that was running when this error happened. CHARLES: Do you only use just [inaudible] or do you assign like a build number or using SemVer? What's a good strategy? LUKE: In our case, we use git tags. And so, our CI deployment process for our Ember apps basically looks like this is we work on a PR, we'll merge it to master. If it builds, the master gets deployed into our QA environment automatically using ember-cli-deploy from our CI server. And then once we're happy with how things are on QA, we do git tag or actually I use an ember addon called ember release that does that tagging for me and I'll tag it either in patch minor or major, roughly [inaudible] although it doesn't matter that much in the case of apps. When there is a new tag that builds green on CI, that gets deployed automatically into production by ember-cli-deploy. And so, that's kind of a basic flow. That tagging, just to be clear, the SemVer tag is just going to be number.number.number. You can get more sophisticated than that and I think both Aaron and Mattia have a system where even in the PR stage, there's automatic deployments happening. So maybe one of you want to mention that. AARON: We're slightly different. Every time we push the pull request, that gets deployed to production. We're able to preview up pull requests in production before we even merge into master which we find super useful to send out links to stakeholders and maybe people that have raised bugs just to get them to verify things are fixed. And then at the point that it's all Google merged, the pull request to master which will automatically do another deploy which is the thing we'll ultimately activate, we activate it manually after the fact. We just do a little bit of sanity checking but we could automatically activate that on merge to master as well. But yeah, the being able to preview a pull request in production is super powerful for us. CHARLES: That is definitely a nice capability. It's hard. It's one of those certain workflows or patterns or tools that you remember life before them and then after them and it's very hard to go back to life before. I would definitely say kind of the whole concept of preview applications is one of those. AARON: Absolutely. It's a daunting concept if you're not there, previewing something that's essentially a work in progress and production. And there are some things you want to be careful with, obviously. But for the most part, it's a super valuable thing. As you say, it's a world where once you're there, it's very hard to step back and not be there again. CHARLES: So I had a question about, we talked about I think it was 162 plugins around the ember-cli-deploy community. What for you all has been the most surprising and delightful plugin to arrive that you never imagined? MATTIA: That is a good one. I'm pulling up the list. What I can tell you, for me, it's not about a specific plugin. The surprising part was the sheer amount of different strategies that people use for the shipping part. At least, I found that the build part is similar for most people, like most people want to do the things that you're supposed to do. So, you want to build your application and then you want a minify it in some way. And there's a bunch of options there from gzip to more recent technologies. But the way people deliver it to servers and the difference in the solutions, that I think for me has been the biggest thing, where people that ship [inaudible] are people that ship directly to Fastly, people that use FTP files, people that use old FTP, people that use our sync, people that do it over SSH. We have people that ship stuff directly to a database because some databases actually have great support for large files. So we even use it as a storage. We have people that do it in MySequel, people that do it in [inaudible]. CHARLES: It's actually storing the build artifacts inside of a database? MATTIA: Yes, I've seen them in that. It's kind of interesting like the solutions that people ended up using. And so for me, I think that that's been the most fascinating part. Because as we were saying at the beginning, I'm just seeing now, we even have one for ZooKeeper. I don't have an idea what this does but it's probably related to some sort of registration around the seven-day index. That, to me, I think has been the biggest surprise. Everybody ends up working in a different environment. And so, that flexibility that users need has been by far the most surprising one. AARON: I think that's also been one of the challenging things, one of the enlightening things for me. I think in the Ember ecosystem, addons and even just Ember itself, it's all about convention of configuration and doing a lot of the stuff that you do for you. I think people expect them to see a lot of point to do the same thing. But the key thing here is it just really automates all the things you would do manually and you need to understand exactly what you want your deployment strategy to be before use them to see a lot of [inaudible] could do for you. You need to decide do I want to install my assets on a CDN and do I want to install my index in Redis or in console or in S3 bucket. You need to know all these things and have decided on all these things and then ember-cli-deploy will make that really easy for you. And this is one of the educational things, I think we still haven't even nailed because there are always people that want to know why this doesn't work. But deployments are complex thing and as what you were saying Mattia, there are so many different variables and variations on doing this that there's no sensible configuration ember-cli-deploy could really provide out of the box, I guess. And so, that's why we ended up with a pipeline that gives you the tools to be flexible enough to support your strategy. LUKE: I think the closest that we come to the convention is that if any app is using ember-cli-deploy, you can run ember deployment targets or ember deploy prod and ember deploy QA and you can expect that that's going to work. What you don't know is how has it happened to be configured in this project. Charles, your question about kind of the most surprising thing that's come out of the ecosystem. For me, I would say -- Mattia mentioned plugin packs earlier which are groups of plugins that kind work together well. And so, we've seen some plugin packs like you might expect, like an AWS pack for deploying to AWS. But the more interesting ones to me that we've seen a lot of, companies open source their plugin packs. So what you naturally fall into as a company that's adopting ember-cli-deploy that has multiple ember apps is that you are going to develop your own plugin pack for internal use because generally speaking, companies follow the same deployment pattern for each of their apps. There's usually not any reason to vary that. So then the new thing that happen on top of that is people said, "Why don't I make this open source so other people can kind of see how we do it?" And that's been a really delightful part of the process to kind of get a peek into how other organizations are orchestrating their deployments. And if people are curious about kind of looking at that themselves, you can go on NPM and look for keyword ember-cli-deploy-plugin-pack and pull up all of those. And you can kind of poke around and see what different companies have open source there. CHARLES: I actually love all three of those answers because it really is for me when you have a constellation of people around a particular problem, it's the surprising solutions that emerge that are some of the most exciting that would have lain hidden otherwise. It would have been kind of buried beneath the source of company A or company B or company C but actually having it all out in the open so that you can inspect it and say, "Wow, where has this solution been all my life?" Something that you have never imagined yourself. LUKE: It's so funny that you mentioned that because that actually is the origin story way back, I'm talking like 2013 probably when we were very early Ember adopters and we were trying to figure out how do we deploy this thing. We're deploying it with our Rails app, like literally deploying the Ruby code and the JavaScript code together which took forever which is a disaster. And I heard through the grapevine, just exactly what you're saying Charles, where the good ideas are kind of hidden inside of a company. I heard through the grapevine that Square had this approach that they were using where they would deploy their JavaScript assets and then deploy their index HTML file, the contents of that file, into a database, it's Redis in their case, and serve then it out of there. And it empowered all of these interesting situations of like having multiple versions, being able to preview the release, et cetera. And so we then set out to copy that idea because there was nothing open source. So we had to create it ourselves which we did in Ruby which we made it inaccessible to many JavaScript shops in the first place. Then the evolution of that kind of over time and of Mattia and Aaron and Mike and the rest of the community kind of talking together has now moved this into the open source sphere where these ideas are more accessible and we've created an ecosystem encouraging these ideas to stay out in the open. It's so true that there's just gems of ideas that have been created by really brilliant engineers inside of companies that could be benefiting so many people, they just haven't seen the light of day yet. CHARLES: Yeah, that leads me to my next question. I would say most of the ideas that we've been talking about today really, except for the build part, how Ember specific are they? Obviously, the ember-cli is a great resource and has a lot of great opinions for actually building the JavaScript assets themselves. But the second two phases of the pipeline really can vary freely, if I understand correctly. And so, have you all ever thought about trying to maybe kind of abstract these processes and these plugins so that these same ideas don't remain not just inside of a company but inside a community that spans a set of companies so that it's available for a wider audience? How integrated is it with Ember and what kind of effort would that be? LUKE: That's a great question. Aaron or Mattia, one of you guys wanna talk a little bit about the history here? MATTIA: Yeah, sure. We've been thinking about this as well. In the past, a guy on the ember-cli-deploy team, Pepin, has actually started this effort and it kind of prototyped this very idea of separating the ember-cli-deploy part from Ember CLI itself and make it a bit more generic. And he started a project called Deploy JS which I can give you a link for the show notes later. I don't think that the project is currently maintained but definitely the start of the effort is there. And the funny thing is that it was surprisingly easy. I think that we didn't get there mostly because we just all use Ember at work. As you know, open source is mostly motivated by the needs that an individual or a group of people have. But if any of the listeners were very interested in this, I think they should definitely get in touch and we will be happy to talk to them and see what can be done here. AARON: And also if you look, there's actually a plugin called ember-cli-deploy-create-react-app and there's also ember-cli-build-view. So it can and is being used to deploy non-Ember apps which I think is super interesting because the only real Ember part of it is just using the CLI to discover the addons and plugins. And from then on, it's really out of the hands of Ember. But it sort of leads into a little bit, Luke mentioned this concept of immutable web apps. And I've been thinking a lot about this lately because a deployment strategy that ember-cli-deploy use as an example a lot and it's kind of become [inaudible] ember-cli-deploy in ways, the lightning approach which is this whole idea of splitting or putting your assets in CDN and your index HTML separately maybe in Redis and serving that. I've been trying to work out how I can talk about this to the wider JavaScript community in a non-Ember way and knowing full well that the concept of lightning deployment means nothing to anyone outside of Ember. Just by chance, I was just talking to some people and this terminology of immutable deployments kind of rose. I started searching around and I come across a website called ImmutableWebApps.org which was just scarily the same as what we've been talking about for the last three or four years with ember-cli-deploy. And a way to boil down at a framework-agnostic level, what are the key points that you need to consider when building a JavaScript web app to make it immutable. And it was just really amazing seeing it. This website was put up 3 weeks before I did my Google search coincidentally. And it's basically word for word what we have been talking about the last three or four years, So, someone else in the other side of the world's been coming up with the same ideas in their company like you were talking about earlier and we've reached out to him. I guess that, to me, is sort of the way forward that I want to sort of pursue to try and get these ideas out in a framework-agnostic way to the rest of community and say, "Hey, we thought about deployment in this way. Have you thought about building your app in this way to give you these sorts of capabilities?" CHARLES: I think the wider community could definitely benefit from that because most of the blog posts and talks I've seen that concern themselves with deployment of single page applications, it's still much more of the tutorial phase. Like, "This is how I achieve getting this deployment strategy." Not, "This is how I repeatedly encode it as a program," and leverage it that way. And so, definitely getting that message out to a wider audience, I think it's a -- what's the word? It's an underserved market. LUKE: Yeah. I really like this idea also. I think about this ImmutableWebApps.org, if you look at it. It's sort of a manifesto with conceptual description of what are the qualities that your app has to have to qualify as an immutable web app which I think is kind of a funny idea but one that people can start to get their heads around and compare that description to their own apps and say how do I hit this or fall short. And it reminds me a lot of kind of the idea of Twelve-Factor App which is an idea that I think came out of Heroku originally. And it's an idea of a backend app that is portable to be able to easily move across different hosts and easily be scalable to different instances of [inaudible] if your app obeys all of these things then it's going to do well under those circumstances, that will satisfy those needs. So, I think it's a great way of thinking and probably maybe even a better entree into the conversation with the wider community than a library, this is certainly a library called ember-cli-deploy. CHARLES: This is a fantastic discussion. It's definitely reminded me of some of the best practices that I haven't thought about in a long time and definitely opened my eyes to some new ones and some new developments. So often, we can be focused on how our apps work internally, like how the JavaScript code works that we can just kind of -- what's the saying -- lose sight of the forest through the trees or I can't remember. It's like too busy looking down the end of your nose to see past your face. I've probably mangled both of those adages, but maybe 60% of two mangled adages is at least equal to one. This is something that we need to be thinking about more, that everybody needs to be thinking about more. This is actually a very exciting, very useful problem space and I'm just really grateful that you guys came on to talk to us about it. So, thank you, Mattia. Thank you, Luke. Thank you, Aaron.
