Ever wondered why some athletes seem to excel under pressure while others falter despite similar physical preparation? Coach Patrick from Endurance Nation uncovers the often-overlooked element of race training that separates the good from the great: mental preparation. While many athletes invest heavily in physical training, it's the mental game that can truly elevate race day performance. This episode reveals strategies for simulating race-day conditions to hone your mental endurance, tackling challenges like mental fatigue and stress. By sharing insights on pacing, fueling, and equipment choices, Coach Patrick emphasizes the role of self-knowledge and personal experiences in crafting effective mental strategies. The goal? To build smarter, more resilient athletes ready to conquer any race. Visualization is not just a buzzword—it's a powerful tool for race preparation. Join us as we explore two key visualization techniques that prepare you for both ideal race scenarios and unexpected challenges. Imagine a perfect race day with everything going smoothly, and then shift gears to anticipate potential obstacles like equipment failures or bad weather. This dual approach, alternating between building confidence and developing resilience, ensures you're equipped to transform potential setbacks into manageable tasks. Whether you're a seasoned racer or a novice, these strategies offer a comprehensive mental toolkit to help you handle race day like a pro. Get ready to master the mental side of endurance sports and boost your success on race day.

It wasn’t until after Wendy Braithwaite moved to Ottawa, Canada, that she started her running career. In 2012, the federal government was undergoing workforce adjustment, and she was counseling employees who had lost their jobs. The stress of the situation was overwhelming, and she started running to have an outlet to get out all the emotions from the day. In 2013 she ran her first half marathon. In 2015 she ran my first marathon, and in 2017 she ran her first 50km ultra marathon. Fast forward to today, she has completed 13 half marathons, 10 marathons, 1 ultra, and 1 Boston Marathon Virtual Experience. Her road to Boston started the day she crossed the finish line of her first marathon just over 5 years ago. She just missed the qualification cut off by 37 seconds. She knew she had it in her, and it lit a fire within that has brought her to where she is today -- an overcomer. The most impressive part is that she doesn’t let her MS keep her from doing what she loves, and she uses it as fuel to keep fighting! If you haven’t listened to the first part of this chat, I encourage you to go back to it, as she shares her story and how she overcame many struggles to hit her goal of a Boston qualification. She shares her heart and leaves it all out there for us. Are you ready to dive into the lessons she’s learned and the mindset that helped lead her to a Boston Marathon qualification and a personal best time at the virtual Boston race? New GAO report calls for cybersecurity coordinator Nick Marinos, Director of Information Technology and Cybersecurity at GAO, goes over the Government Accountability Office report calling for the establishment of a national cyber coordinator position in the White House Competing with Russia and China in the Arctic Bradley Bowman, Senior Director for the Center on Military and Political Power at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, discusses concerning activity by competitors in the Arctic and steps the U.S. should take to prepare Race and diversity training at federal agencies Terry Gerton, President and CEO of the National Academy of Public Administration, discusses diversity training in the federal government and concerns about the related executive order
Part of a series on this topic, today I discuss the Democrats open hostility to the Gospel. Also we take a look at race training in the workplace.
Moments ago we heard a voice in support of President Trump's recent executive order banning the training of federal employees in critical racial theory and white privilege. Now we present the opposing view, one opposing the order. Speaking in favor of the latest iterations of racial sensitivity and inclusion training, was the president of the Professional Managers Association, Chad Hooper.
Few White House memos have sparked as much debate as the one telling agencies to stop presenting certain forms of training related to racial diversity and inclusion. The Sept. 4 memo cited Critical Race Theory and white privilege training designed to portray the United States as inherently racist or evil, from the words of the memo. Whether this type of training exists and whether it should, Federal Drive with Tom Temin spoke with people on both sides. Among those in favor of the memo, from the right-leaning National Center for Public Policy Research, was Senior Fellow Horace Cooper.
In today's Federal Newscast, senior executives and federal managers have some harsh criticism for the Office of Management and Budget's recent directive on race training.

Real Life Runners I Tying Running and Health into a Family-Centered Life
This episode was spurred on by a few events. With the start of the school year, it is also the start of official cross country practice and the kids bring out new ideas in me. I have been thinking about the new runners and how adding just about anything to their routine will improve them as a runner. I thought about the returners, and how there comes a point where coaches move past general health and into a racing program. My question was, while new runners can succeed by improving their health, what is justified for the veterans. What is justified for my own running? When is training not actually healthy? We start by covering the basics of health. We discuss exercise(both cardio and strength), nutrition and sleep. We continue with a discussion of race preparation. How eating changes in positive and negative ways. How the quantity and intensity of training increases. How fatigue builds up and we can ignore it by focusing on the next race. How fatigue comes in both mental and physical forms. We wrap things up with the topic of race hopping. This involves perpetually chasing a pr by always having another race on the calendar and having it be close. We mention that looking back on a training cycle generally results in us deciding what more we could add, and how regular down cycles can be refreshing for our routine. Overall, the episode focuses on taking control of your training by making sure that you realize what trade offs you are making with your health by thinking purely about the next race. Blind training leads to the tendency to ignore warning signs and push through all fatigue. To be the best version of you, be aware of your thinking. Support BRN https://www.buddhistrecovery.org/donateRacism remains one of the most rooted and painful impasses of our time. It is fed through unawareness and the misuse of power. Embedded in racism is the skeletal shape of all oppressions. To understand the dynamics of racism and the flesh we put on its bones is to also understand other forms of oppression and our relationship to differences, divisions, and diversity. Too many of us want racial suffering to go away without first being touched by it or caring for it. Yet recognizing how we have been conditioned to think and react is at the heart of both racial distress and racial healing. In this introductory talk, we discover how our inner life is reflected in the world through the Buddha’s teachings on Ultimate and Relative Reality and Distortion of Mind, and the three truths we must remember but often forget. In this new episode of the BikeJames Podcast I share my thoughts on Enduro Racing and how approach training riders for it. A lot of riders are making some common mistakes with their training and my goal is to help you avoid them while knowing what you did need to focus on to be successful at Enduro Racing. Click the link at the bottom of this post to stream or download the MP3 file for this episode. Remember that you can download the BikeJames Podcast through Itunes and Podbean as well. If you are a seasoned vet looking for an edge or a new racer looking for a place to start your training journey, then this podcast will have a lot of great info for you. Enduro Racing can be a fun and rewarding part of your mountain biking experience and with the right training plan it can be even better. Until next time… Ride Strong, James Wilson MTB Strength Training Systems Show Notes: Goal with this podcast is to inspire you to take your results into your own hands. With the right approach you can make dramatic changes in your performance. Enduro Racing gets scored on the DH sections, which makes them the most important. There is no bonus for transfer times so they don’t matter. Top Enduro racers come more from a DH background than an XC background. For them Enduro Racing is slower than their normal pace and for XC it is faster. It is easier to train slower for longer than to increase your speed. Big mistake riders make is training like it is an endurance event and not emphasizing where the points are really scored, which are the shorter DH style sections. In DH your strength-to-weight ratio and your technical skills are the biggest factors. This means they should be emphasized in your training. Enduro specific fitness includes having the anaerobic engine to ride as fast as possible on the timed stages while being aerobically fit enough to ride the transfer with minimal impact on the anaerobic energy system. In the gym this includes getting stronger and more mobile to improve strength to weight ratio and movement efficiency. This includes 2-3 days of strength training and 5-7 days of mobility work (can be as little as 10 minutes a day). Right now I like to get strong with Ramping Isometrics (great for Strength to Weight Ratio) and use tools like Indian Clubs and the Steel Mace to work on movement efficiency. I’ll mix in some “traditional” movements for variety but I’ve found that using them to get “stronger” usually led to getting hurt or having my training take away from my riding. Cardio Training = Breathing/ Make sure you are training your breathing. Domino Theory - Last domino is “cardio” but first one is breathing. The best cardio training you can do is trail riding…but only if you do it right. You won’t become a better Enduro Racer in the gym or on a trainer - it will only happen on the trail. Most Enduro racers waste their most precious training time by just going for a ride and calling it training. To be training it must reflect what you are training for, which isn’t a normal trail ride. Enduro training trail rides should include 2 types: Moderate Skills Focused Rides: These rides have you focusing on riding as smoothly as possible instead of trying to go hard and fast. They are a great time to pick a specific skill and focus on it. Avoid redlining for sustained periods of time and focus instead on using as few pedal strokes as possible. Get 2-3 of these a week. Hard Race Simulation Rides: These should reflect how you race, which includes transfers with climbs followed by timed sections. On the trail you should try to mimic the length of time you would ride a transfer stage while focusing on keeping your breathing under control and not redlining, which includes walking if you need to. You should also have some sections that reflect a stage and can vary in length. Rest if you need to but focus on putting down your hardest effort for those runs. In other words, instead of just riding “hard”, have some easy and hard sections. This may include lapping the same section if that is all you have access to to train on. Do 1 of these every 7-10 days. Some easy rides or days that you work on skills drills can round out your riding. If you can’t ride and have to do some “cardio training” I would encourage you to include some “cardio strength training” like combo drills or mace flows (Upper Body Cardio/ Grip Endurance). Watch out for programs that treat you like a roadie or XC rider with lots of long, sustained effort rides. If it doesn’t seem to reflect the realities of Enduro Racing and they can’t give you a really good reason why not then odds are they are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Enduro Training doesn’t have to be rocket science but you do need to apply some critical thinking to it. You have what it takes to be successful already and with the right training program you can unleash that.
