Susan Haynes and Sam Haynes | Mark 6:7-13 Calling the Twelve to him, [Jesus] began to send them out two by two... ‘Take nothing for the journey except a staff - no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.' They went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed with oil many people who were ill and healed them. The recording contains extracts from an Explore service, beginning with the reading from Peter Frere and a short explanation from Susan. Later, Dan Parnell and Sam Haynes - together with members of the congregation - discuss how we can live out Jesus' instructions today. An edited video recording of the Sunday service can be viewed on YouTube.

The Texas Revolution has long been cast as an epic episode in the origins of the American West. As the story goes, larger-than-life figures like Sam Houston, David Crockett, and William Barret Travis fought to free Texas from repressive Mexican rule. In Unsettled Land: From Revolution to Republic, the Struggle for Texas (Basic Books, 2022), historian Sam Haynes reveals the reality beneath this powerful creation myth. He shows how the lives of ordinary people—white Americans, Mexicans, Native Americans, and those of African descent—were upended by extraordinary events over twenty-five years. After the battle of San Jacinto, racial lines snapped taut as a new nation, the Lone Star republic, sought to expel Indians, marginalize Mexicans, and tighten its grip on the enslaved. This is a revelatory and essential new narrative of a major turning point in the history of North America. Andrew R. Graybill is professor of history and director of the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He is the author of The Red and the White: A Family Saga of the American West (Liveright, 2013). My nearly decade-long journey with this film (inception, screenplay writing, voice recording, animating, animating, animating) has come to an end; and I quite honestly…I don't know what to do with myself. I cannot believe that I am here, about to share THE WEIRD KIDZ with audiences. I've been thinking a lot about what made me want to set forth on this crazy undertaking. The story for the Kidz' adventure started forming when my wife and creating partner, Hannah, got pregnant with our first child. I began to imagine explaining to our new little one what things were like when I grew up. That is how THE WEIRD KIDZ was born." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/withoutyourhead/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/withoutyourhead/support

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sam Haynes (@samhaynessculpture) As an artist that initially felt isolated and uncomfortably distanced from everyday life working within a studio, I started my practice over twenty-five years ago creating site specific public art installations, engaging local communities with the belief that art has the power to bridge divides within society. The creative process is still all about making connections for me, within my practice as an artist facilitator, as well as a collaborator and sculptor. Accessibility lies at the heart of my work, incorporating found objects and materials, using low tech methods of construction to create abstract assemblages that reference domestic and architectural space. My mixed media work combines a rhythmical, systematic design and geometric structure with softer, flexible elements that take shape more organically. I am led primarily by an intuitive response to these contrasting or opposing materials, leading to often unexpected outcomes. These playful interactions, surprising and yet familiar, seek to create a sense of balance and tension, building dynamic connections between materials and the surrounding space, animated through the use of colour, light and shadow. I have been strongly influenced by the artwork of Action Space's learning disabled artists, Linda Bell and Nnena Kalu. Their abstract, process-led installations show an honest and direct response to materials, free from conventional constrictions; an approach that I seek to mirror within my own sculptural practice. Matt and Alex sit with their good friend and business partner, Sam Haynes. Sam is one of their partners and GM for Longhorn Construction and Development. Sam grew up near Del Valle and learned early on that he had the drive to provide a different outcome for himself. They talk about how to build strong partnerships in business because bad partnerships can ruin everything. Having a clear/common goal, being adaptable, putting your people first, and having great communication are just the start to a good foundation of any business partnership. If you're just starting out with your journey, don't give up. Keep fighting.
