In this episode of the Tough Girl Podcast, we're joined by Pamela Lee, a professional offshore sailor from Ireland who's breaking records and barriers in one of the most extreme, male-dominated sports on the planet. Now based in Brittany, France—the heart of short-handed offshore racing—Pamela has carved out her path with grit, determination, and a clear vision for empowering women through sailing. Pam shares her journey from growing up beside the sea in Ireland to becoming the first Irish woman to skipper the Transat Jacques Vabre Race, setting three world records sailing around Ireland, and now training for the 2026 Route du Rhum, one of the toughest solo ocean races in the world. We dive deep into her early influences, the realities of offshore racing, learning French to break into the French sailing scene, and the financial, emotional, and physical challenges of pursuing elite-level sailing. From boat borrowing to breaking glass ceilings, Pamela opens up about the power of visibility, representation, and believing in your own potential—no matter how big the dream. Whether you're interested in sailing, women in sport, or chasing bold goals, this is an empowering and eye-opening conversation not to miss. ***  New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! Make sure to subscribe so you never miss the inspiring journeys and incredible stories of tough women pushing boundaries.  Do you want to support the Tough Girl Mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media in the world of adventure and physical challenges? Support via Patreon!

Diffusé le 15 juin 2021 Générique : Fast and wild/EdRecords Post-production : Clovis Tisserand

He’s sailed more than 40,000 offshore miles, done a number of Sydney Hobart races, a couple of two-handed Round North Island races and raced up to the Pacific Islands multiple times. Dr Dave, who has assisted with a number of medical emergencies at sea and been Yachting New Zealand’s medical officer since 2015, talks about what yachties and boaties should do to make sure they are prepared if the worst happens. He also delves into some of his sailing experiences, like when he had to walk away from Digby Taylor’s Whitbread campaign in 1985, his dramatic experiences during the 2002 Round North Island Race when he was nearly washed onto the rocks at Cape Palliser and the time he was so sleep deprived he thought he saw a flock of sheep on the foredeck.

Having been in a tug of war with fellow competitor Scallywag, Comanche took line honours after having nearly come to a standstill with the finish in sight. Luke Davis and Julian King spoke with skipper and owner Jim Cooney about his latest win that involved a shaky start and frustrating finish. Cooney shares that he just wanted to, "show the world what this boat can do," and that a calculated risk to go out wide helped the supermaxi claim the John H Illingworth Challenge Cup.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

#282. Liz Wardley is the current skipper of MAIDEN, the famous Whitbread yacht which saw the first all-girl crew complete the round-the-world race in 1989. Liz has never NOT been a professional racing skipper. Getting her first taste of sailing at age 13 on a Hobie cat, she was instantly hooked. At 15, she convinced her parents to let her drop out of school, and by 18 she was racing in the Sydney-Hobart race. Since then she’s done 3 Volvo Ocean Race’s and is aiming for another in next year’s event. Currently she’s working closely with MAIDEN founder Tracy Edwards to fulfill the goals of The MAIDEN Factor as they sail around the world with an all-girl crew. -- Celestial Nav workshop in Annapolis, Feb 1 & 2, 2020 at Eastport Yacht Club! Katie continues the line of world class sailing champions who have translated their athletic success to leadership in their sport, business, and beyond. What success? How about three America's Cups, including being the youngest member of the first ever all-female boat, two around the world races, as well the famed Sydney Hobart and Worrell 1000 Extreme Catamaran Races. She's also a lawyer and is president of the Rising Tide Leadership Institute. She just got back from Olympic racing in Miami, which followed placing second in the Sydney Hobart race, sponsored by Ocean Respect Racing, who promotes reducing pollution. We talk about seeing plastic in the remote ocean as well as in much greater density closer to shore, especially America's shores. Around the world sailors see parts of our planet farthest from human establishment. Sadly, I've found it's a standard response that they've all seen plastic human junk however remote they've traveled. She also describes waves towering over her boat's 81-foot mast---that is, higher than an 8-storey building. How would you like an 8-storey building crashing around you?Staying calm in a situation like that sounds like a tall order, but what you want in a leader. On this month’s episode of The Sailing Show, Abby Ehler chats to two guests who have recently competed in the iconic Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.  First up Abby chats to sailing legend Dee Caffari, who competed with Ocean Respect Racing skipped by Australia’s Stacey Jackson.  Abby’s second guest is young, up and coming sailor Rosalin Kuiper, who chats about her experience sailing a 100ft maxi with the pro’s. Dee Caffari is a renowned British Sailor, who recently led ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’ – the first mixed gender youth team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race 2017/18; with a strong sustainability message.  As part of the Ocean Respect Racing crew, made up of fully professional female crew, the team came within minutes of an overall win of the Sydney to Hobart Race, something crews spend years trying to attain.Rosalin Kuiper, 23, of the Netherlands, graduated from the Team Heiner Youth Academy in 2018, following 3 years of extensive training. The academy, run by Roy Heiner, covers all aspects of big boat sailing from boat handling to boat maintenance, mastering all the positions on board, racing by day and night, boat delivery, safety, and navigation etc. Rosalin’s ambition and perseverance saw her land a shore-side role with the 100ft maxi yacht INFOTRACK, vying for Sydney-Hobart line honors and through her hard work and work ethic she was offered a sailing position for the race itself, a dream job for anyone setting out on the professional sailing circuit.  For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE. LISTEN ABOVE AS NIGEL YALDEN SPEAKS TO PJ MONTGOMERY AND PETER SHIPWAYWild Oats XI took out the 74th Sydney to Hobart yacht race for the record ninth time – but their win has again come under controversy. After being stripped on line honours last year because of a rules breach, Wild Oats XI are once again stung by accusations of rule breaking. The Mark Richards-skippered supermaxi snatched the lead from defending line honours champion Comanche to cross the line in Hobart shortly after 8am (local time). It was a satisfying win after last year's mishap which handed victory to rivals Comanche due to a rule breach and time penalty. However, Black Jack owner Peter Harburg and Skipper Mark Bradford raised a possible issue with an abnormality during the race, claiming that Wild Oats XI's Automation Identification System (AIS) – which must be operational at all times according to the rules – was not on for the entire race. The pair said they didn't plan to protest the result but suggested that the race committee investigate the matter."The rules say every boat must have the AIS on," Harburg said. "The AIS means there are no secrets. We know where everyone is, they know what speed we are doing, what direction we are going."If you are going to win the race you should win it according to the rules … it should be fair."[It's] a pity that such a great race as this, which has been a close race with all of us changing position all the way down … got bad at the end because someone just doesn't have any regard for the rules."Wild Oats XI navigator Juan Vila told The Daily Telegraph he believed the AIS was turned on for the entire race, while Richards dismissed the accusation."It's not a mandatory thing … we were in sight of each other the whole race, it was that close," Richards said. The quartet of Wild Oats XI, Black Track, Comanche and Infotrack was at times separated by just a few nautical miles before the eventual winners made a gamble to sail a wider route, which ended up paying off.Wild Oats XI finished in a time of one day, 19 hours, seven minutes and 21 seconds. What a win... We've done it! #wildoatsxi #RolexSydneyHobart pic.twitter.com/HOeBmPoyg2— Wild Oats XI (@WildOatsXI) December 27, 2018

I caught up with my favourite maritime author - Rob Mundle in late 2017, on 'all things Jimmy Spithill' and his recent project writing Jimmy's biography 'Chasing the Cup - My Americas Cup Journey'. Jimmy Spithill is arguably one of the world's greatest skippers: the youngest and a double winner of the America's Cup, winner of the Sydney Hobart; multiple world champion in match and fleet racing. What goes on inside the head of this extremely focused man, who is a true pioneer in the game called sailing? Rob shares some insights into this rags-to-riches story of fierce determination, court cases, seasickness, crashed boats and cars, the greatest comeback ever in sporting history and the dramatic 2017 America's Cup defence.     Rob also shares a preview of the 2017 Race Sydney Hobart and reflects on his 50th year of involvement in the race (3 as crew and 47 as commentator).   Visit Ocean Sailing Podcast for offshore sailing opportunities and podcast extras and follow us on Facebook.

After preparing my Beneteau yacht 'Ocean Gem' for our first ever Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, I decided to interview our crew 4 weeks after we completed the race and gather their thoughts on the project and their experience. It started in September 2017 when we assembled a crew of 10 and a prepared a long project list that grew to more than 200 items. In early December we departed the Gold Coast in Queensland for Sydney via Lord Howe Island (300nm off Australia's east coast). The 800nm delivery journey qualified our crew and yacht for the 630nm race of a lifetime. This is a great episode for those thinking of pushing their local club racing and blue water sailing to the next level. It demonstrates that with good preparation, anything is possible.
