Over the Back Fence

This week we are bringing you something a little bit different - Nicola and Di recently headed off to Hamilton Island Race Week and interviewed a collection of world-class sailors whilst they were there. This week's episode brings you all 4 of those inspiring chats.  First up we talk to Alice Parker - a remarkable 30-year old navigator who's raced in 4 Sydney to Hobarts, as the only female on an all-male crew, as well as several world championships that have taken her to many different countries. We hear about Alice's best moment at sea, as well as the most frightening, which happened during one of her Sydney to Hobarts. Not only is Alice an incredible young sailor, she's also a physiotherapist and is back studying at uni again to upskill in some maths and physics. You'll want to hear Alice's answer for who she wants to meet at the back fence because it's truly beautiful.  We then get the chance to chat with Mark Richards, the sailor and boat builder that many listeners would know as the long time skipper of Wild Oats, who has won the Sydney to Hobart a stunning 9 times! We hear the amazing story of how Mark got started in sailing and how he credits it to being adopted by the right people. Mark tells some great stories about his friendship with Bob Oatley, the comradery of the sailing community as well as his greatest achievements and most harrowing moments at sea.  Our third conversation is with the dynamic sailor girl Nic Douglass. When you listen in to this chat you'll hear just how much passion and enthusiasm Nic has for sailing. Having just returned from the Olympics where Nic was part of the team commentating for the crowds on-the-ground in Marseille, we hear how the work she does now and the media company she started actually came after she was at one of her low points when she didn't qualify for the London Olympics in 2012. Nic is proof that sometimes it's the low moments in our lives and careers that become turning points and lead to really great opportunities.   Finally, we talk to the incredible Stacey Jackson who has sailed in a whopping 16 Sydney to Hobarts and is nowhere near stopping! Not only that but Stacey has also competed in a 9-month round-the-world race not once, but twice including conquering Cape Horn, which is known as the Mt Everest of the sailing world. We hear what it was like the first time Stacey sailed around the world and the most incredible story of how her crew survived after their mast broke shortly after they'd rounded Cape Horn on her second trip around the world. Stacey was also the skipper on Wild Oats when Julie Bishop famously jumped off the back of the boat after the start of the race in Sydney.  This week's episode is full of so many great stories and wonderful personalities. It was so much fun recording on location up in Hamilton Island and we really hope you love tuning in to this one.   Follow Alice Parker on IG here Follow Wild Oats XI on IG here  Follow Palm Beach Motor Yachts on IG here Follow Sailor Girl Nic Douglass on IG here Follow Stacey Jackson on IG here Follow Hamilton Island Race Week on IG here Follow Nicola and Di on IG hereSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 1st of August 2024 We had another week of high solar flux but unsettled geomagnetic indices. The solar flux index, or SFI, was above 200 from the 27th of July onwards. There was a worry that multiple coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, might push the Kp index up during the week. In the end, the Kp index didn't rise above 5. But why was that? The first of several CME eruptions was expected to pass Earth on the 29th of July. The solar wind speed increased from 330 kilometres per second to around 450 kilometres per second, but only a brief period of minor G1 geomagnetic storming was observed. The solar wind stream was fast, at more than 450 kilometres per second, but its frozen-in magnetic field was predominantly North-facing or neutral. So, it didn't couple with the Earth's magnetic field, and we ended up with a Kp index of only 5. If we had had a south-facing interplanetary magnetic field or Bz it could have been much worse. As it was, the ionosphere was affected on Wednesday the 31st of July. However, by 1830UTC things were back to normal, with a critical frequency of 7.4MHz, which gives a maximum usable frequency over a 3,000km path of around 21MHz. Further disturbances on Thursday the 1st of August saw the Kp index rise to 5 again, but it was short-lived and only lasted for one three-hour period. So, we are still in a period of high solar activity, with numerous M- and even X-class flares, coronal mass ejections and high sunspot numbers. With a cluster of sunspots rotating into view right now, it should be an interesting week ahead! The SFI is predicted to fall next week, perhaps to the 180s or 190s. Meanwhile, HF propagation remains good at times, although we are still feeling the effects of the summer doldrums, with reduced daytime maximum usable frequencies. Keep an eye on solarham.com for up-to-date geomagnetic information. The 15m band is still the favoured daytime DX band, with occasional F2-layer openings on the 12m and even 10m bands. However, most 10m openings are still due to Sporadic-E. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The weather patterns that drive some of our radio propagation conditions are in the process of changing. As we ended the previous week, there were still regions of high pressure near enough to southern areas for some useful Tropo across the North Sea, English Channel and south over Biscay.  The slow change towards low pressure dominating the charts will be gradually extending its influence over the whole country as we move into next week, so less Tropo and more interest in rain scatter. This has been available over some northern areas recently and from heavy thunderstorms in the south. It is probably going to be a useful mode for exploring the GHz bands in the coming week, particularly where heavy thundery rain occurs.  Meteor scatter is also a worthwhile pursuit since we are still in the broad period of the Delta Aquariids meteor shower and that eventually blends into the August Perseids later in the month. The solar conditions continue to be challenging and the Kp index has been high enough to make it worth thinking of checking for auroral conditions – either fluttery signals on the LF bands overnight, or perhaps auroral conditions on the VHF bands. The Kp index gets mentioned on all propagation websites these days, but spaceweather.com is a good source for that and much else too. Sporadic-E is still worth checking out and, although the summer jet stream pattern is usually pretty weak, it is still there, and the position is perhaps a bit more northerly now than earlier in the summer. This means that paths towards the east to Scandinavia and the Baltic might be worth looking for, although other directions can still happen, of course. Moon declination started to fall from Friday the 2nd, so Moon window lengths and peak Moon elevation will follow suit. With apogee on Thursday the 8th, path losses will be at their highest for the month. 144MHz sky noise is low until the evening of Saturday the 3rd when we see the Moon and Sun close in the sky until moonset on Sunday. After that, the sky noise is low. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

In today's episode I thought it would be really cool to do a little recap of the trip that Jamie and I just went on to Fiji and Australia. This was a really fun trip, so if anyone listening to this ever decides to go to Fiji or Australia, listening to this could give you some good ideas. Also, as a trainer I hear about the challenge that a lot of our coaching clients and gym members have when traveling and not knowing how to navigate this time away from home while still chasing goals. So this episode is meant to give you some tips and strategies that we actually do ourselves when traveling in order to have an enjoyable trip and not have to feel like you are starting over with your health goals, back at square one,  once you get home.So what are the big take-away action items that we thought were important Avoiding falling off all the way, with tiny decisions that add up.Movement: Be intentional with light movement throughout entire trip. We didn't do a single “workout” once but we for sure got our steps and used our bags as resistance training. Walking in the airport instead of sittingMobility before and during long flightsFiji and Hamilton Island cart option or walkBus/Taxi or is it walkable. In Fiji there was a long strip that had a trolly, we didn't take that once.Hikes for fun events (bonus, most people don't do this when on vacation so you'll likely get secluded epic views). We actually planned the blue mountains as a key part of our trip. Other Activities like snorkeling, swimming, hiking, zip lining and fun activities like that. Freedom to walk after every single mealStairs, hills, Carried our own luggage everywhere NutritionUnderstand that alcohol is most likely going to be a part of this trip, stop feeling guilty and minimize damage with planning. Move your body post alcohol binge, help the body use the alcohol as energy as soon as possible to clear the poison from your bodyGet the good stuff! Enjoy slowly and mindfully. Alcohol and food. We stuck with wine and seltzers (avoided those big sugar bomb cocktails)Longer trips, choose some days to wait until dinner to drinkWater! Carry a water bottle and constantly drink to avoid dehydration of body and tissues. Alternate alcohol with water. Sydney had cool water refill stations Protein! Snacks and meals. It's okay to fast if only access to trash like airport or gas station food. Jamie cooked two meals in the bungalows. Saved money, healthy foods, Some other notable things we did for our health were:We took a probiotic (SEED) supplement which helped with travel stomach stuff. Still did our best to stick to our nighttime routine (watched something funny, did something relaxing, turned the lights low). Tried our best to sleep and wake with the sun. Even though our circadian clocks were way off what they were use to… we still had that routine that helped to put us into a state of sleep that we were used to which helped us get better quality sleep than we would have had we gone completely different what we were used to.References:Brain.fm App(First month Free, then 20% off subscription)Discount Code: coachdamiensdCaldera Lab Skin Carewww.calderalab.comDiscount Code: CoachDLinks:IG:@coachdamien_sd@jameemarie@damienrayevans@livinthedream_podcast YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS6VuPgtVsdBpDj5oN3YQTgFB:https://www.facebook.com/coachdamienSD/

TIMESTAMPS: Erin Patterson / Mushroom Update: (4:33) Golf Cart Tragedies: (12:33) Golf cart accidents send around 10,000 people to the ER in the US every single year. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two cases where women were killed in golf cart accidents right after they were married. Samantha Miller and Aric Hutchinson held their wedding in April 2023, after months of planning.  Sam looked radiant in her beautiful white dress and as she left the reception with her new husband, she told him that she never wanted the night to end.  Minutes later, Jamie Lee Komoroski (25) crashed into the golf cart that was carrying the couple to their accommodation.  The crash happened at 65mph in a 25mph zone.  Samantha was killed instantly and Aric required many surgeries.  Jamie Lee's blood alcohol level was 0.261. Marina and Robbie Morgan were married in Sydney, Australia in 2022.  They had previously postponed their wedding due to the pandemic.  The couple held a lavish ceremony and jetted off to the beautiful Hamilton Island for their honeymoon.  Golf carts are the primary mode of transport on the island.  Just days into their honeymoon, Robbie noticed that the battery on their cart was low and he attempted to make a u-turn to return to charge the vehicle.  The cart flipped on top of Marina, killing her at the scene.  Robbie is facing charges in relation to his new wife's death. There has been a big update in the case of the Australian Mushroom Deaths, which we covered on a previous episode.  Erin Patterson has been arrested and charged with both murder and attempted murder.  We run through the latest in this episode.      Read our blogs for these cases - here! Paul has many passions and drivers in his life, all of which are talked about in this episode of “Recruitment Journeys”, recorded live at the RCSA Shape Conference on Hamilton Island. I learned a few things about Paul that I didn't know, having known him for at least 15 years, such was the openness of the conversation. To me, this felt less like a podcast interview in tropical paradise, and more like a couple of recruitment lifers sitting by a roaring fire and chatting the hour away! In Episode 5 - Part 5 of the "Proper True Yarn" podcast, Bubba Tilley unfolds a yarn so wild it almost led to divorce! Two years ago, during a golf trip to Hamilton Island, Bubba's father-in-law purchased a horse named Flop Turn River. On that very day, Bubba took a ride on another horse, but things took a disastrous turn when the horse threw its head back, breaking Bubba's hand. Despite his pleas, his wife didn't believe him until a hospital visit revealed his shattered hand needed surgery and a cast.Enter Bubba's mate Kurt Kapewell, who suggested they attend the horse race featuring Bubba's father-in-law's horse. In the six weeks Bubba was sidelined from racing, he embarked on a wild bender with his mates, ordering an extravagant array of cocktails at Portside. His intoxicated state led to a heated argument with his wife, resulting in her telling him not to come home if he was that drunk. So, what did Bubba do? He and his mates decided to book spontaneous tickets to Phuket, Thailand, while still inebriated. However, upon arriving at the airport, Bubba was so drunk that security prevented him from boarding the flight, all on a Sunday afternoon! The yarn takes a hilarious turn as Bubba and Knuckles delve into stories about accidents of another kind, sharing their experiences of "accidents" in public places. Knuckles recalls an incident in the streets of Thailand, while Bubba shares his own mishap driving through Toowoomba. But that's not all—Knuckles shares a memorable tale from his mining days involving a co-worker named Eddie, whose dedication to a game of darts took an unexpected and messy turn. The conversation then turns to polocrosse adventures while intoxicated, leading to some of the best games of Bubba's life. Bubba caps it off with a hilarious story from Jake Kapewell's 18th birthday party, where beers turned into rums and rums turned into a WWE-style spectacle, complete with a naked sprint through the bar.Don't miss this uproarious episode of "Proper True Yarn" filled with laughter, outrageous escapades, and unforgettable tales!#propertrueyarn#jockey#hangover Hosted on Acast. ⚠️ Struggle isn't normal. I heard that in the early stages of my personal development journey, and it blew my mind. "NOT NORMAL" Yet to me (and so many others) it was. It was made normal during conversations about how we couldn't afford something, it was made normal by the news when they emphasised inflation vs the average household income, it was made normal when you looked at others with financial freedom as completely separate to “us”, like anything different to just ‘getting by' was out of our reach. As I thought about this and then continued to read the pages of this book, my mind was blown. We come into this world with a clear slate. Our perception of reality is undistorted and everything is just. Over time, we take on beliefs, suggestions and observations that pile on top of each other. This is all while experiencing life, unaware of the stamp that some of those experiences make. Limiting beliefs, unresolved traumas, unprocessed emotions eventually get stuck, and that once clear perception of reality is distorted. An interference, in what could have been an abundant life, occurs, and unconsciously we tune into a station where struggle, hardship and feeling worthless becomes ‘normal'.Financial struggle is not normal. Just like anything else that is contrary to your desire for true abundance. Inside my 12 week mindset program, The Academy, I take you through a journey of uncovering where your blocks lie, why they're there and what distortion this has created. What are the first signs of perimenopause?  Unlike the much easier signal, years earlier, that you were having your first period, there's no specific sign or marker of this transition. And because the process starts many years before actual 'menopause' (which is, officially, 1 year after your last period) it usually happens in our early to mid 40s.  For TV presenter Shelly Horton it was an enormous shock when her doctor suggested she was perimenopausal. “I'm like, hang on a minute, I'm 46! I'm hot! What the hell?! Menopause is for old ladies with grey hair, clutching their pearls. And they have hot flushes and then their periods stop. That's all that happens. Right? Like I had no idea!" It has led Shelly to become, a self-described 'peri warrior'. And together with GP Dr Ginni Mansberg she now offers webinars and workshops to support women through perimenopause, and also to teach businesses how to support their own staff. Find out more at Don't Sweat It. Plus, she's conducting a weekend-long retreat on Hamilton Island, from June 16-18 2023, for women to meet others and to learn and be inspired.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this week's episode of ‘Drink More Water' Riley and Soph are in Hamilton Island with their boyfriends Tainui and Sam. The girls sit down and ask the boys your relationship related questions about: what their first reaction was when they first met/saw their girlfriend; what their favourite thing is about their girlfriend; what they think about girls who are obviously insecure about their body; something they learned about their girlfriend once moving in with them that was a surprise; one thing they wish they could change about their girlfriend; what they think about jealousy in a relationship; if they have times they wish they were single; what it is like to date an influencer, YouTuber or person on social media; when they knew their girlfriend was the one; how many times a week they have sex; the most awkward moment in their relationship; if being with one partner is boring; and if they walk away or confront their partner when they are annoyed with them. The conversation is wrapped up by everyone giving their weekly recommendations.SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS:DRINK MORE WATERIG | @drinkmorewater.podcastEmail | drinkmorewaterpodcast@outlook.comRILEYIG | @rileyfitptYouTube | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXg52c_Rzwyy7xIFIzEXDjQSOPHIEIG | @sophiejaynemillerYouTube | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXVVwb-CgnwYkhlfn9X4Z-Q
