This week we are bringing you something a little bit different - Nicola and Di recently headed off to Hamilton Island Race Week and interviewed a collection of world-class sailors whilst they were there. This week's episode brings you all 4 of those inspiring chats. First up we talk to Alice Parker - a remarkable 30-year old navigator who's raced in 4 Sydney to Hobarts, as the only female on an all-male crew, as well as several world championships that have taken her to many different countries. We hear about Alice's best moment at sea, as well as the most frightening, which happened during one of her Sydney to Hobarts. Not only is Alice an incredible young sailor, she's also a physiotherapist and is back studying at uni again to upskill in some maths and physics. You'll want to hear Alice's answer for who she wants to meet at the back fence because it's truly beautiful. We then get the chance to chat with Mark Richards, the sailor and boat builder that many listeners would know as the long time skipper of Wild Oats, who has won the Sydney to Hobart a stunning 9 times! We hear the amazing story of how Mark got started in sailing and how he credits it to being adopted by the right people. Mark tells some great stories about his friendship with Bob Oatley, the comradery of the sailing community as well as his greatest achievements and most harrowing moments at sea. Our third conversation is with the dynamic sailor girl Nic Douglass. When you listen in to this chat you'll hear just how much passion and enthusiasm Nic has for sailing. Having just returned from the Olympics where Nic was part of the team commentating for the crowds on-the-ground in Marseille, we hear how the work she does now and the media company she started actually came after she was at one of her low points when she didn't qualify for the London Olympics in 2012. Nic is proof that sometimes it's the low moments in our lives and careers that become turning points and lead to really great opportunities. Finally, we talk to the incredible Stacey Jackson who has sailed in a whopping 16 Sydney to Hobarts and is nowhere near stopping! Not only that but Stacey has also competed in a 9-month round-the-world race not once, but twice including conquering Cape Horn, which is known as the Mt Everest of the sailing world. We hear what it was like the first time Stacey sailed around the world and the most incredible story of how her crew survived after their mast broke shortly after they'd rounded Cape Horn on her second trip around the world. Stacey was also the skipper on Wild Oats when Julie Bishop famously jumped off the back of the boat after the start of the race in Sydney. This week's episode is full of so many great stories and wonderful personalities. It was so much fun recording on location up in Hamilton Island and we really hope you love tuning in to this one. Episode Title: "From Rock N' Roll To The Answers Within Our SoulEpisode summary: Steven Machat has a deep understanding of life and what the purpose of life is. Love. The answer is love. He knows that we are here on Earth to love, experience joy, and help others. We are dreamers and we are meant to achieve our dreams. In order to do that, we need to do what we want and disregard what others tell us what to do, and follow our hearts. We have the choice to create our heaven by living freely or choosing to live in our hell by the following fear. Steven knows that every person can live in their own heaven, but it's up to them to create that. Guest Name & Bio: Steven Machat has had an incredible life. Born and raised in NY City, through his entertainment lawyer father, Marty Machat, he met some of the biggest names in the industry; Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Elvis, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Clyde Otis and Sugar Ray Robinson to name but a few. Steven has worked with the likes of Genesis, Phil Collins, Phil Spector, Peter Gabriel, Leonard Cohen and the Electric Light Orchestra. His vision changed, and he realized that life is not to accumulate more money or be the boss of everyone else, but about learning how to share and to live in a society where we all work and live together. STACEY JACKSON In December 2021, Stacey releases “Flipside”, a track recorded in London and co-written with longtime collaborator Ramzi Sleiman, who has worked with the likes of The Overtones, LuLu, Westlife, Taio Cruz, T2 and Mis-teeq. FLIPSIDE has a deliberate 1980s pop feel, and was therefore the perfect track to use as an introduction to Stacey's 80s nostalgia pop TV Show, Stacey Jackson in the 80s (Spotlight TV, Sky Channel 365 and Freest 500). Reaching #1 in the Digital Radio Charts, FLIPSIDE is an anthem of empowerment, but it's also so much more than that. Stacey Jackson has been up against her fair share of obstacles; as an older woman in the public eye, certain parts of her career have been an uphill struggle. On FLIPSIDE, she pours her self assertion and determination into every syllable, convincing us and, in the process, herself, that she's got staying power. Summer 2022, Stacey releases her single ‘Urgent', a cover of Foreigner's timeless ‘80s classic, transforming it into its very own modern-day dance floor hit. Within weeks it reaches the TOP TEN in Beatport's Dance & Electro Charts.

Stacey Jackson, special education advocate, parent, engineer & past school committee member stopped by the podcast to give us an update on her daughter's out of district placement as well as engage in a discussion on the transition process. Stacey discusses how the immersive experience living away from home in a setting such as Riverview School, a co-educational boarding school placement, can be beneficial for those with "complex learning challenges" and has served her daughter well. Keeping the big picture in mind while advocating for the most effective programming for our loved ones challenged by special needs and trying to stay positive while making and keeping connections, are a few tools that have served Stacey well over the years. She urges parents to keep setting the bar high and remember that the main goal of any transition is that our loved ones are able to hold a job and live independently as possible. She states, "I don't know if it's just people have pity on kids with special needs....oh their lives are so hard that you know... let's not push them anymore. Let's keep them happy. But she's the type of kid that like most kids, if you're not going to push her, she's not going to take on anything herself, she's going to sit back and coast and play Uno all day if they'll let you. But at the end of the day, we're doing these kids a tremendous disservice because, okay, we might be keeping them happy, but that's going to help them later on. Is that going to help only hold a job or live independently or have you know, great friendships with people if they're not pushed outside their comfort zone? On this month’s episode of The Sailing Show, Abby Ehler chats to two guests who have recently competed in the iconic Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. First up Abby chats to sailing legend Dee Caffari, who competed with Ocean Respect Racing skipped by Australia’s Stacey Jackson. Abby’s second guest is young, up and coming sailor Rosalin Kuiper, who chats about her experience sailing a 100ft maxi with the pro’s. Dee Caffari is a renowned British Sailor, who recently led ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’ – the first mixed gender youth team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race 2017/18; with a strong sustainability message. As part of the Ocean Respect Racing crew, made up of fully professional female crew, the team came within minutes of an overall win of the Sydney to Hobart Race, something crews spend years trying to attain.Rosalin Kuiper, 23, of the Netherlands, graduated from the Team Heiner Youth Academy in 2018, following 3 years of extensive training. The academy, run by Roy Heiner, covers all aspects of big boat sailing from boat handling to boat maintenance, mastering all the positions on board, racing by day and night, boat delivery, safety, and navigation etc. Rosalin’s ambition and perseverance saw her land a shore-side role with the 100ft maxi yacht INFOTRACK, vying for Sydney-Hobart line honors and through her hard work and work ethic she was offered a sailing position for the race itself, a dream job for anyone setting out on the professional sailing circuit. Leonard Charles Williams (born February 16, 1945)[1] is an American singer-songwriter and musician, best known for his work during the 1970s. Williams was the lead vocalist for R&B/Soul group Tower of Power. As a soloist, Williams made several hit recordings, including 1978's "Cause I Love You" and 1977's "Choosing You". Williams was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and moved to Oakland, California, at a young age.[2] Learning to play the trumpet in elementary school fueled his interest in music; his skills as a vocalist were first nurtured by singing in gospel choirs and groups around the Bay Area. He worked with several notable artists, such as Sly Stone, Andraé Crouch, Billy Preston and members of the Hawkins family, Edwin, Walter and Tramaine. After winning several local talent contests, Williams signed his first recording contract with Fantasy Records. He cut two singles for the label, including "Lisa's Gone" and "Feelin Blue", written by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival. In 1972, Williams joined the emerging funk band Tower of Power. A string of hits followed, including "So Very Hard to Go", "What Is Hip", "Don't Change Horses (In The Middle of the Stream)" and "Willing To Learn". During his two years with the group, Williams participated in three albums: Back To Oakland, Urban Renewal and the gold LP Tower of Power. Williams and Tower of Power toured throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. While still with Tower of Power, he recorded his first solo album Pray for the Lion for Warner Bros. Records in 1974. At the end of 1975, Williams left the band and returned to his solo projects. Initially signing with Motown Records in 1975, he later moved to ABC Records in 1977 (which was then purchased by MCA Records in 1979). With producer Frank Wilson at the helm and songwriters such as Judy Wieder, Clay Drayton, Terry McFadden, and John Footman, over the next four years, he scored ten chart hits, including "Shoo Doo FuFu Ooh", "Choosing You", "You Got Me Running", "Love Hurt Me Love Healed Me", "Here's to the Lady," and "Midnight Girl". Williams recorded four more albums from 1977 to 1980: Choosing You, his first gold LP; Spark of Love (contains the hits "You Got Me Running", and "Cause I Love You" as well as "Midnight Girl"); Love Current; "Taking Chances" and Let's Do It Today. After leaving MCA, Williams recorded for the independent record labels, Rockshire and Knobhill. In 1986, he was invited to sing vocals on "Don't Make Me Wait For Love", a track from Duotones, a multi-platinum recording by Kenny G. The song became a Top 20 Billboard Hot 100 and R&B hit the following year. His 1978 hit song "Cause I Love You" was sampled by Havoc of Mobb Deep for the track "Nothing Like Home", and by Kanye West for the songs "Overnight Celebrity" by Twista and "I Got A Love" by Jin. The track was sampled a fourth time in 2007 by Scarface for his single "Girl You Know" featuring Trey Songz & Young Jeezysampled "Let's Talk It Over" for his single "I Do" featuring Jay-Z and Andre 3000. His song "Half Past Love" was also sampled by The Coup for their 2006 single "My Favorite Mutiny" featuring Black Thought of The Roots and Talib Kweli of Black Star.Since that time, Williams has continued his solo career, touring the US, Europe and South Africa, and has also expanded his career to include acting, starring in several stage plays, including Love on Lay Away starring Deborah Cox, Mel Jackson and Martha Wash, What Men Don't Tell starring Kenny Lattimore, Chante Moore, and Dottie Peoples, and When A Woman's Fed Up. He is also one of the featured artists on Urbanland Music's DVD The Big Show, recorded at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 29, 2002. 20 July 2014: Another week, and another jam packed show with Adventures of a Sailor Girl herself, Nic Douglass. Nic covered the main story in sailing this week, that Team Australia has withdrawn from the America's Cup. The reason why is a mystery that will no doubt develop more over the coming weeks, and Nic will keep you posted. We heard a replay with Stacey Jackson, of Team SCA, as the Canary Islands race, the first official Volvo Ocean Race warmup, is now underway. Nic also caught up with her roving reporter, Nina Curtis, Olympic silver medallist on that has been happening for her, both the ups and downs! Finally the Sailor Girl covered some of her own adventures, including the snow, and a pretty amazing photo shoot with Ana Andres-Arroyo Photography on Rose Bay beach, at Nic's favourite time of day, sunset! Next week, Nic will be doing a live broadcast for the start of the Sydney to Gold Coast race on 26 July as well as her normal show at 6pm AEST on 27 July.
6 July 2014: So many adventures, and the weekend is just not enough time to squeeze them all in! Great to catch up with Australia's newest World Champs, Jesse Dobie and Adrian Fawcett, who took out the F16 Worlds in Newport last week. We managed to wake Jason Waterhouse up on the morning of his next regatta. He will be on the water with Lisa Darmanin on the Nacra this week, after wrapping up his first A Class regatta. Nic wore pink for the show to support for Stace Jackson, who is part of the bow team for Team SCA, the all-female Volvo Ocean Race team. It is less than 100 days until the race kicks off! The Sailor Girl played a clip from Match Cup Sweden 2009, five years to the day from when she took out the event with Katie Spithill on the helm, and Stacey Jackson on the bow, as well as Sam Boyd, Olivia Price and Jess Eastwell. Nic also played a few clips and filled us in on her weekend on the water!
1 June 2014: What a massive show! Amazing to catch up with Howie Hamlin on his 5o5 North Americans win, and all that is ahead for him. Also touched base with Jason Waterhouse straight from Austria at the GC32's - too awesome! Last but definitely not least, Stacey Jackson called in from the Canary Islands to touch base about all that is happening for Team SCA leading up to the Volvo Ocean Race. I also had a very serious story about M&M's to share from my adventures!
