It's been almost two years, and I (Baratunde) am back with an experimental drop because democracy is something we DO, not something we HAVE (or don't), and this moment calls for that reminder. So... I’m teaming up with my friend and fellow citizenist Jon Alexander (author of CITIZENS) to do something we believe is urgent and necessary: shine a light on the everyday people practicing democracy in extraordinary ways. We’ve gathered a week’s worth of short, powerful stories from across the U.S.—people showing up for their communities, bridging divides, building something better. We’re releasing one story per day this week on LinkedIn and Instagram. But we know there are more. We’re not doing this for clicks. We’re doing this to prove there’s demand for a different kind of story. One where people aren’t problems to be fixed, but solutions already in motion. Here’s how you can help:
In this episode of "Growing Up as Boys & Girls," we're spilling the tea on the biggest party pooper of them all: patriarchy. Richa Chadha dives deep into the 7th Grade CBSE Civics Chapter 4 and has some fun – including doodling a doll that she had as a child and performing a dramatic reading of a comic panel as a Punjabi dad. Yeah, that happened. She talks about how patriarchy affects women's experiences, but how it creates some seriously uncomfortable situations for men too. From toxic masculinity to unrealistic gender expectations, we talk about all the buzzkills that come with living in a patriarchal society. But we're not just here to complain. Drawing from her experiences as a former child, Richa also shares some tips on how to change things up and challenge those pesky societal norms. Because who says we can't have a good time and smash the patriarchy at the same time? So grab a drink, kick back, and join us for "Growing Up as Boys & Girls." It's the podcast episode that's way more fun than your average feminist critique. Yes, back in school, Civics was like the token black guy of social studies. Who had time to learn about elected officials while deciduous trees and various dates were waiting to be mugged up! But as we grow older, wiser and more responsible, we find ourselves using the things we were supposed to study in 7th standard more and more useful (no, trigonometry, not you). Meghnad and Shreyas, hosts of a new podcast called "How to Citizen" tell us about this and how we can become better citizens (or at least, better informed while trolling people on Twitter). This is an eye-opening episode and honestly, we could have gone on yammering for another few hours on the topic - but you can hear M&S do that in their show (link below). We also talk about the problems of social studies pedagogy, and go through several of our own experiences and biases. Super chat it was and we hope you enjoy it as well. Listen to How to Citizen here: www.ivmpodcasts.com/how-to-citizen NEW TO SIMBLIFIED? It's an Indian podcast - probably the best to come from Malad West - that takes things that happen around us, and deconstructs them in a language you can understand, often surmounting several puns and PG Wodehouse references along the way. Aishwarya Mohanraj loves a lot of people. This includes her school principal, her domestic help and Salman Khan... in no particular order. It's episode 6 of How To Citizen and the hosts, Meghnad and Shreyas, are joined by comedian Aishwarya Mohanraj. Together, they do an extra dramatic reading of a longest comic they have encountered till date in 8th grade civics. A comic that deals with our broken justice system and how police operate. The comic is so long that Meghnad starts thinking about how there is an inbuilt Marvel Universe style crossovers happening between chapters. Our hosts are clearly super obsessed with this book. For this episode, we highly recommend you head over here: https://ivm.today/2EuycPD and download chapter 6 from our CBSE Civics Book. In the first episode of How to Citizen, Rohan Joshi discusses chapter 1 of 8th grade CBSE Civics textbook titled "Constitution". The participants of this intensive exercise discuss why we even need a Constitution and get philosophical with a heavy dose of lulz. Many deep questions are asked and answered like whether the Constitution is a document which tells us what India is or what it's supposed to be, whether we have personal constitutions which are being amended and why playing cricket in Mumbai is hilarious because of the application of non-constitutional environmental rules. For an immersive experience of this podcast, go download the first chapter from here and read it along with us. As Rohan put it, this promises to be the best Navneet Digest of your life.
