Why do U.S. eighth graders continue to struggle with reading proficiency? Research suggests that while early literacy reforms have improved fourth-grade reading scores, these gains often plateau by eighth grade due to insufficient decoding skills necessary for understanding complex texts. This indicates a need for sustained literacy instruction beyond the early years to ensure continued reading development.

Check it out on our Patreon! -------- We're joined by the writer and film critic Hannah Strong to talk about "Eighth Grade" the 2018 film debut from musician, comedian and Youtuber Bo Burnham. The film explores the final days of middle school for a young American girl, and her relationship to her family, her social circle as well as the alternative persona she has made for herself online. We discuss why this might be one of the few successful examples of how social media can be depicted on screen, how much of this derived from Burnham's own experiences on the platforms, and whether, in spite of its successes, it really does capture the lived experiences of young Americans. Our conversation for The Valley Business Today with Shayla Rickard, Business Retention Manager for Frederick County Economic Development Authority to discuss the upcoming Worlds of Work (WOW) Expo. This event, happening on October 11, 2024, at the Wilkins Athletic and Event Center at Shenandoah University, is an eighth-grade career exploration program. Originally for seventh graders, the event now targets eighth graders and hosts about 3,000 students from seven school divisions. Shayla explains the origins of WOW, modeled off a southern program, and highlights its purpose—to give students a hands-on look at various careers available in their area. The expo includes industries like agriculture, manufacturing, IT, and healthcare. With employers providing interactive activities, students get to experience a day-in-the-life scenario for different jobs. We discuss how the event allows local businesses and industries to showcase the diversity of roles within their fields. I share anecdotes from previous expos, demonstrating how the event helps students think beyond typical job descriptions. For instance, kids learn that radio stations need more than DJs—they require salespeople, engineers, and programmers. The conversation also touches on how the WOW Expo encourages students to consider different career paths and sparks new interests. Shayla mentions the robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program in Frederick County, aiding students in making more informed decisions about their future careers. We also talk about the logistics of participating in the expo. Businesses interested in being exhibitors can register easily and no fee is involved. There is a hospitality suite and lunch provided for exhibitors. Shayla highlights the variety of participants they've had in the past, from large corporations to small local businesses, underlining that all sorts of industries are welcome to join. -------- Purchase Hannah's Book: 'Sofia Coppola: Forever Young' here: Sofia Coppola: Forever Young'
Brad and Jake dive into the cinematic highlights of 2018. They kick off with "mid90s," Jonah Hill's directorial debut that vividly brings to life the raw skateboarding scene of 1990s Los Angeles through the eyes of a troubled boy. The journey continues with "Hereditary," Ari Aster's haunting horror film that masterfully intertwines family drama with spine-tingling terror. Brad and Jake dissect these distinct films, wondering what will become of Hill's directing career, and whether Aster's film might be better watched through a more realistic lens than a supernatural one. Other movies mentioned in this episode: Murder by Death (1976), Dogtooth (2009), Inherent Vice (2014), Tangerine (2015), Manchester by the Sea (2016), First Reformed (2017), The Florida Project (2017), Annihilation (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), Ben is Back (2018), Blindspotting (2018), Burning (2018), Can You Ever Forgive Me?
