On March 18, 2025, the Election Commission of India announced that its officials will hold talks with UIDAI experts for linking the Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) with Aadhaar. This linking is supposed to be voluntary, but there is some confusion as to whether the voter will really have any choice in the matter. There are also concerns that linking EPIC with Aadhaar could lead to voter profiling, selective disenfranchisement, targeted campaigns, data privacy violations, and possibly undermine the autonomy of the Election Commission. Are these concerns valid or are they overblown? Guest: Usha Ramanathan, human rights activist who has worked extensively on Aadhaar-related exclusions and rights violations. Host: G. Sampath, Social Affairs Editor, The Hindu. Edited by Sharmada Venkatasubramanian.
It's Wednesday, March 19th, 2025. This is Nelson John, let's get started. ECI to Link Voter IDs with Aadhaar Amid Concerns The Election Commission of India (ECI) will consult UIDAI to link voter IDs (EPIC) with Aadhaar for those who voluntarily provided it. This move aims to eliminate duplicate registrations while adhering to legal provisions. With 66.23 crore voters already sharing Aadhaar details, the plan faces opposition, particularly from the Trinamool Congress, over concerns of duplicate EPIC numbers. The ECI admitted to some errors in assigning codes but clarified that demographic and polling details remain unique. With 99.2 crore registered voters, upcoming discussions will determine how Aadhaar integration can enhance electoral roll accuracy while maintaining privacy and voluntary participation. Trent's Stock Stumbles as Zudio Growth Slows Trent Ltd., which saw a 935% stock surge post-pandemic, is now the worst-performing Nifty 50 stock in 2025, down 26%. The slowdown is tied to Zudio's lagging expansion, as store additions fall below expectations. Growing competition in budget fashion and slower Westside expansion—due to a shift toward larger stores—are also weighing on growth. Analysts, however, remain optimistic about Trent's long-term prospects, citing its strong private labels and diversification into beauty and lab-grown diamonds. But for now, Zudio's future will dictate Trent's stock movement. Bajaj Group to Buy Allianz's Stake for ₹24,180 Crore Bajaj Group is set to acquire Allianz SE's 26% stake in Bajaj Allianz General and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance, valuing both businesses at ₹93,000 crore. While Bajaj gains full control, analysts predict a future public listing of the insurance arms. Despite high solvency ratios—300% for general insurance and 369% for life insurance—the deal's valuation raises questions. The general insurance acquisition came at a 16% discount compared to ICICI Lombard, but the life insurance buyout appears costly, with weaker profitability. Investors remain cautious as Bajaj's exposure to lending via Bajaj Finance and Bajaj Housing Finance could impact sentiment. The real challenge lies in delivering future earnings growth. Sebi's Settlement Process Under Fire for Delays & High Costs Sebi's settlement mechanism, meant to fast-track securities law violations, is under scrutiny for delays and steep penalties. In FY25, settlements collected ₹851 crore—nearly seven times the ₹125 crore from FY23. Even excluding a ₹643-crore NSE case, the jump is substantial. Yet, efficiency is lagging, with pending settlement cases doubling from 137 in FY23 to 289 in FY24. Critics argue that Sebi arbitrarily inflates settlement amounts and imposes strict non-monetary penalties like voluntary debarments. While Sebi is working on standard operating procedures, legal experts say companies facing delays have little recourse beyond filing writ petitions—though courts rarely intervene. India's Motorcycle Parts Exports Surge, Imports Decline India's motorcycle parts exports have jumped 27% over three years, from $558 million in FY22 to $709 million in FY25, driven by the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Imports, meanwhile, dropped from $408 million to $371 million, reflecting growing self-reliance. The sector is benefiting from deeper integration into global supply chains, with strong demand from Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. In FY24, exports hit $741 million, reversing a dip in FY23. Imports have fallen over 30% in two years, highlighting India's shift toward domestic production. With key buyers like the US, Turkey, and Mexico, India is cementing its place as a global manufacturing hub.
EMQQ Global founder Kevin Carter talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the IMQQ India Internet UCITS ETF, a fund designed to capture the rapid digital transformation happening in India. Carter emphasised that India is experiencing a "digital golden age", driven by three key megatrends: rising consumer demand, widespread smartphone adoption, and expanding internet access. Carter explained that India has the world's largest and youngest population, coupled with one of the fastest-growing economies. As more Indians gain access to affordable smartphones and internet services, they are rapidly integrating into the digital economy. He highlighted that companies in India's internet sector—ranging from food delivery to online beauty retail—are experiencing explosive growth. He also pointed out the India Stack, a government-backed digital infrastructure initiative that has enabled financial inclusion for 800 million people through Aadhaar-based digital identification. This foundation, along with seamless digital payments, is accelerating India's transition into a highly connected economy. Discussing the ETF's methodology, Carter stated that the fund focuses on India's new-age technology companies that dominate e-commerce, financial services, and consumer technology. Some key holdings include Zomato (food delivery), Nykaa (beauty e-commerce), and Makemytrip (online travel services). Although the market has seen a correction recently, Carter remains bullish on India's long-term digital growth, comparing it to China's rise two decades ago. He believes long-term investors have a significant opportunity in India's expanding internet sector. Watch more insightful interviews on Proactive's YouTube channel. In 2023, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's remarks in India on the cost of training foundational AI models — like the ones that power ChatGPT — sparked a debate on whether Indian firms should spend millions of dollars on the aim of that technology. The issue pits sovereignty and national pride against financial constraints. Is it necessary for sovereignty and business reasons for India to work towards a foundational model, as the IT Ministry's IndiaAI Mission has announced it will? Here we discuss the issue. On December 29, 2024, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused each other of manipulating the Delhi electoral rolls in an attempt to win the Delhi Assembly elections, scheduled to be held in February. While the AAP has accused the BJP of submitting applications to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to get the names of voters removed from the list in its strongholds, the BJP has claimed that the AAP government is aiding Rohingya immigrants to settle in the capital so that it can secure their votes. Earlier, the Congress had accused the ECI of arbitrarily deleting or adding voters' names in electoral rolls before the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Should voter IDs be linked to Aadhaar to ensure transparency and put all these political claims and counterclaims to rest? Here we discuss the question. Guests: S.Y. Quraishi, former Chief Election Commissioner of India; R.S. Sharma, former Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the first Director General of the Unique Identification Authority of India Host: Sreeparna Chakrabarty Edited by Jude Francis Weston

Host Casandra Grundstrom is very happy to participate in a crossover episode with the wonderful people from the Sociotechs Podcast Associate Professor Silvia Masiero and PhD Researcher Tejas Kotha. This is a special episode which focuses on Silvia's brand new book (out 26.10.24) about Unfair ID. Sociotechs host Tejas and myself (the IS DIGEST host) interview Silvia on the 14 year's in the making of her book and the stories she shares to demonstrate the injustice of identity in different case settings including food security systems, biometric borders, and algorithmic social protection. We further explore the power of these stories for researchers and to discuss core tenets of unfairness for identity, justice, and resistance. Our focus then shifts from criticisms of exclusion to what can be done about unfair ID, discussing how it could be fairer through design. Quote from the book “This book has been, since the beginning, a hymn to hope: the hope that by understanding unfairness in digital ID, and the paths of its effects on people, a fairer world can be built for the digitally identified.”References: Cheesman, M. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 25th of July and here are today's headlines.Amid heavy rains overnight and persistent downpour, especially in the catchment areas of dams, parts of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad reported flooding this morning. The India Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange alert' for the next two days in the city. Four deaths have so far been reported in the rain-related incidents, including three due to electrocution and one due to a rock fall. The city witnessed three landslides and a wall collapse as confirmed by the Police Commission.Meanwhile, due to torrential rains local train services in Mumbai were disrupted, as heavy waterlogging in many places brought traffic to a standstill. The IMD issued a ‘red alert' for Mumbai and the neighbouring districts of Thane and Raigad. SpiceJet, Air India, and IndiGo also announced potential flight disruptions, while schools and colleges were shut. The debate on the Union Budget 2024-25 is underway in both Houses of the Parliament. Congress MP from Jalandhar, Charanjit Singh Channi said there is an undeclared emergency in the country citing the crisis in Manipur, the plight of farmers, rape of Dalit woman in UP. Channi also raised the issue of the depreciation of the Indian rupee's value and questioned the absence of Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the House.Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication, facial recognition of candidates, and live Artificial Intelligence-based CCTV surveillance are among the measures that the UPSC now plans to introduce to prevent “cheating, fraud, unfair means, and impersonation” during the examinations that it conducts. This comes in the wake of the case of trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar who is facing a UPSC probe for allegedly “faking her identity” and a row over the NEET UG paper leak case.Typhoon Gaemi made landfall in Taiwan, leaving 22 people dead in the Philippines from flooding and landslides, and three in Taiwan, with more than 220 reported injured. The island has seen persistent flooding in low-lying areas, landslides, and damage to homes and shops. Offices and schools in Taiwan were closed for the second consecutive day today and people were urged to stay home and away from the coastline. The island is regularly hit by typhoons and has boosted its warning systems, but its typography, high population density and high-tech economy make it difficult to avoid losses when such storms hit. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

In 2009, the Indian government embarked on an ambitious task to register all of the country's billion-plus citizens with a unique digital ID. Aadhaar - which means foundation in many Indian languages - became the world's largest ever biometrics project. It allowed millions of people to open bank accounts or access a mobile connection for the very first time. But the project also attracted considerable opposition from privacy advocates and civil rights groups, who brought a case that went all the way to India's Supreme Court. Kevin T. Carter is an investment expert with a rich history rooted in the evolution of financial markets and a deep dive into emerging economies. Throughout our conversation, we explored Carter's journey from a fresh college graduate with a keen interest in investment, sparked by the iconic book "A Random Walk Down Wall Street," to a visionary in the field of emerging markets. His early career began in an investment bank, where a casual interview turned into the launchpad for his investment career.Carter shared the profound influence of Burton Malkiel's work on his professional outlook, notably Malkiel's revolutionary idea of index funds which laid the groundwork for Carter's own innovations in investment strategies. "It was just an idea to Burt Malkiel back then," Carter recalls, highlighting the transformative potential of indexing and ETFs which now dominate the investment landscape. The narrative then shifts to Carter's disillusionment with the mutual fund business and his pioneering work in fractional share trading and direct indexing. His collaboration with Malkiel not only refined his investment philosophy but also led to the creation of groundbreaking financial services that democratized stock market access. "We filed a patent on fractional share trading... and now almost every brokerage firm in the world offers fractional share trading," Carter proudly notes, underlining the shift towards more inclusive investment models.Carter's journey took another significant turn with his engagement with Google employees and his eventual focus on emerging markets, particularly China and India. His firsthand experiences with these economies offered him a unique perspective on their potential for growth and innovation. "China's economy was growing at over 10%," he recalls, capturing the dynamism of these regions long before they became focal points for global investors. The discussion delves into the intricacies of emerging market investments, emphasizing the consumer-driven growth in these regions. Carter's approach to investment in emerging markets is not just about recognizing their growth potential but understanding the transformative impact of technology, particularly mobile internet, on these economies. "The second wave was China, right behind us, 2005 to 2020... Now, there's still growth in China, but... the third wave is going to be giant, and it's already happening," he explains, highlighting the ongoing evolution of global market dynamics.Carter's narrative on India's transformation is richly detailed, attributing a significant part of this change to Nandan Nilekani, Infosys' co-founder, who led the Aadhaar program since its inception in 2009. This initiative was a critical move towards digitizing the nation's identity verification processes, issuing a unique twelve-digit identification number linked with biometric data to every citizen. It was a monumental step in addressing the critical lack of formal identification and laid the foundation for the India Stack, an advanced digital infrastructure that facilitated the opening of 800 million digital bank accounts and propelled the country towards financial inclusivity. Coupled with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system revolutionizing payments—showcasing an 80% shift towards digital transactions with over 12 billion monthly transactions—India's narrative underlines a nation on the cusp of a technological and economic revolution. With a population exceeding 1.4 billion, a vibrant middle class, and a tech talent pool, under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, the country is poised to redefine its global stance, making it a focal point for investors in technology, consumer goods, and fintech sectors.

To make open banking work the way it is meant to, you need three major building blocks; data exchange, payments and digital ID. While many countries are working on these pieces, there is really only one place that has already built them all, into a fully-integrated, cohesive whole, at population scale: India. In the season four finale of Mr. Open Banking, Eyal sits down with Dr. Pramod Varma to discuss the uniquely successful digital transformation of India. Pramod is the Chief Architect behind a set of national systems known collectively as the India Stack, widely considered one of the most successful implementations of digital public infrastructure (DPI) in the world. The India stack includes Aadhaar, India's digital identity program for over 1.3 billion people, and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which today processes over 12 billion transactions a month. Eyal and Pramod take a journey through the history of digital transformation in India, and how they aim to become a fountainhead for the successful implementation of Digital Public Infrastructure all over the world.Specifically they discuss: • The meteoric rise of Aadhaar• How UPI drove financial inclusion• The bottom-up approach to open banking• Opening healthcare, e-commerce and more• Creating Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)

There are chances that your Aadhaar and passport details are up for sale on Dark Web. A report by US-based cybersecurity firm Resecurity has claimed that the personal data of 815 million Indians has surfaced on the Dark Web. And a hacker is willing to sell the entire lot for $80,000. If established, it could well be the biggest data breach that the country has seen. In today's first segment, Thareek Ahmed tries to find where the buck stops? Who protects our data? And what is the government doing to save it from falling into the wrong hands? Clearly, the government has a tough task at hand. But given its vibrant IT industry, it can put a formidable infrastructure in place to save personal data of its people. Moving on, the country's IT sector is passing through a challenging phase. Hit by a slowdown in global demand, it is also facing some domestic challenges. Several IT firms have seen exits at the top level. In our next segment, Find out why are IT companies bleeding talent at the top. Let us turn our gaze to financial markets now. Discount broker Zerodha has forayed into the asset management business with its two new fund offers -- Zerodha Nifty LargeMidCap index Fund and Zerodha ELSS Tax Saver Fund. This comes at a time when names like JioBlackrock and Helios MF, too, are vying for a share in the mutual fund pie. So, should investors opt for Zerodha's offerings? In August last year, several demat accounts of Zerodha were hacked, which prompted its CEO Nithin Kamath to announce a new safety tool. Talking of data breach -- which we thoroughly addressed in our first segment -- people often wonder what they can do to protect their personal information, especially that of Aadhaar? Well, UIDAI allows users to lock their Aadhaar biometric details. Listen to this episode of the podcast for answers.

Paddy is crucial for Jharkhand's farmers, supporting the state's agricultural economy. However, its heavy reliance on rain presents a challenge as Jharkhand has faced recurring droughts, including the worst in 122 years during the paddy sowing season in 2022. To assist affected farmers, the central government introduced the “Per Drop Per Crop” scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana in 2006, promoting drip irrigation for water conservation and improved plant growth. The Jharkhand government implemented the scheme in 2011.However, an Indian Express investigation into the implementation of this scheme uncovered misuse of Aadhaar cards, farmers unaware of funds collected by private companies in their name, and multiple instances of fraud. Abhishek Angad from The Indian Express shares the revelations from his investigation.Hosted by Rahel PhiliposeProduced and scripted by Utsa Sarmin, Shashank BhargavaEdited and mixed by Suresh Pawar
Are the autonomous digital forces jolting our lives – as uncontrollable as the weather and plate tectonics – transforming life, society, culture, and politics? David Auerbach's exploration of the phenomenon he has identified as the meganet begins with a simple, startling revelation: There is no hand on the tiller of some of the largest global digital forces that influence our daily lives: from corporate sites such as Facebook, Amazon, Google, YouTube, Instagram, and Reddit to the burgeoning metaverse encompassing cryptocurrencies and online gaming to government systems such as China's Social Credit System and India's Aadhaar. As we increasingly integrate our society, culture, and politics within a hyper-networked fabric, Auerbach explains how the interactions of billions of people with unfathomably large online networks have produced a new sort of beast: ever-changing systems that operate beyond the control of the individuals, companies, and governments that created them. Meganets, Auerbach explains, have a life of their own. Actively resisting attempts to control them, they can produce spontaneous, unexpected social groups and uprisings that could not have even existed twenty years ago. Constantly modifying themselves in response to user behavior, which can result in collectively authored algorithms no one can control, these enormous invisible organisms seem to be the new minds of the world, increasingly commandeering our daily lives and inner realities. David B. Auerbach is a writer, technologist, and software engineer who worked at Google and Microsoft after graduating from Yale University. His writing has appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, MIT Technology Review, The Nation, n+1, Tablet, The Daily Beast, and Bookforum, among many other publications. He was Slate's technology columnist from 2013 to 2016, and he was nominated for a National Magazine Award for his coverage of the HealthCare.gov hearings. He teaches the history of computation at the New Centre for Research and Practice and is a frequent guest at their events. He has lectured around the world on technology, literature, and philosophy and, in addition, has done scholarly research on James Joyce, William Shakespeare, and artificial intelligence. His first book, Bitwise: A Life in Code, was published by Pantheon in 2018. Meganets Third Place Books
