Find The Song Writer's Gig on iTunes and Stitcher   James Lee Baker was born in Amarillo, Texas with music in his veins. His mother played guitar, his father played drums, his grandmother wrote Gospel music and his grandfather was a concert pianist.  James took the inspiration from his family and began working to play music and create his own musical identity.                       He began participating in open mics in his late teens and created a song catalogue that resulted in his first album being “Saturday” released when he was 18 years old.   His early sound was rock and pop driven but then he started hearing talents like John Gorka and became interested in the singer/songwriters genre.  The real spark came when he heard a song from the soundtrack of “Me, Myself & Irene” called “The World Ain't Slowing Down” by Ellis Paul.    James moved to Denver in 2009 and continued writing and developing his sound.  The ensuing years were filled with hard work, frequent gigging and continuing down the singer/songwriter path.    Having met Ellis Paul and following his music more closely, James decided to study with him and was mentored by Ellis for roughly a year in 2017.   I met James in 2017 at Ellis Paul's New England Songwriters Retreat and he immediately distinguished himself as one of the real special talents attending the event.  At last year's retreat, James started off one of the mornings by playing an amazing song, “The Last Cowboy of Hutchinson County”.  He tells about his grandfather and father with such clear memories that you are drawn in and captivated.   Enjoy this episode as James closes it by playing “The Last Cowboy of Hutchinson County” and “Leave the Saving Souls for Later”.   Find James and his music at www.jamesleebaker.com

With folk and Americana as inspiration, James Lee Baker is quickly climbing the charts.The Texas native is known for his guitar stylings, and poetic lyrics akin to some of his predecessors Gregory Alan Isakov, Bob Dylan, and Slaid Cleaves.He dropped two albums in 14 months, with his "Candian River" album released March of this year. Torturer James Lee Baker was caught at USP Marion trying to beat a confession from a minimum security inmate. He took great pride in getting confession from people as high up as s Associate Warden, the second in charge of a prison. He chocked the man and struck him in the groin. He destroyed the case against a suspect in child molestation, got a supervisor fired and lost his right to vote, own a firearm, hold public office, his retirement and the respect of many. To say he was a bad egg is no exaggeration. If you listen to him he will tell you that I and many of my coworkers have no honor. I will let you decide after you hear this story.

  James Lee Baker is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. His songs are crafted from exposure to many genres of music throughout the course of his life. A classically trained musician, Baker fuses influences from pop singer-songwriters like Matt Wertz, David Mead, and contemporary folk artists like Ellis Paul and Slaid Cleaves. He embraces open tunings to create an unconventional but welcoming sound and timbre to his playing.  In March of 2010, Baker's song Independence Day was awarded Song of the Month at Songwriter Universe, produced by YouTube sensation Tyler Ward. In May of the same year, the album won the Expose Yourself Song Contest at ReviewPosse.com. Between 2010 and 2012, Baker collaborated with celebrity photographer and cinematographer Sean Hagwell from Denver to produce several top-notch music videos. In 2015, Hagwell and Baker worked together to produce The Day I Said Goodbye (Acoustic) music video. In March of 2015, Baker’s song That Look In Your Eyes was selected as one of the best songs of the month by Songwriter Universe.  In May of that same year, he released an EP of songs called A Brilliant Defeat. Christopher J. Bloom (The Fray, Rachel James) lead its engineering and production and has worked with James in the past on his previous full-length independent release Something You’ve Left Behind.
