From top-40 hits “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I'll Come Running,” to “I Can Dream of You” and “Boatman,” the last two recorded by his brother James, Livingston's creative output has continued unabated. His musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire, and he is equally at home with a range of musical genres—folk, pop, gospel, jazz—and from upbeat storytelling and touching ballads to full orchestra performances. Livingston Taylor has never stopped performing since those early coffeehouse days, shared the stage with major artists such as Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Buffett, and Jethro Tull, and he maintains a busy concert schedule, touring internationally. He is a natural performer, peppering his shows with personal stories, anecdotes and ineffable warmth that connect him to his fans. His relaxed on-stage presence belies the depth of his musical knowledge, and fans might just as often be treated to a classic Gershwin or something from the best of Broadway. In February 2019, Livingston released "The Best of LIVe - 50 Years of Livingston Taylor Live". This album features 11 song selections from his upcoming "LIVe - Livingston Taylor Live" Box Set. Upon release, the album was ranked in the top 10 and his song "Good Friends" was #2 on the Folk DJ chart. Folk Alliance 2019 in Montreal did not pan out exactly as I planned…I caught some wonderful music and some audio for this podcast but for the most part, I spent the entire week trying to navigate and operate with incredible back and hip pain…what I thought was sciatica turned out to be, among other things, a couple of stress fractures in my lower back. I will always be most grateful for two things from that trip...the kindness and assistance shown to me by my travelling Kansas City music family and the discovery of the musical tour de force known as Rising Appalachia. As world travelers for nearly two decades, Rising Appalachia are now merging multiple global music influences with their own southern roots. Founded by sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith, the band has established an international fan base due to relentless touring, tireless activism, and no small degree of stubborn independence. But it wasn’t always so. The sisters have morphed into this musical life coming to realize that performing could be just one component of a greater overall vision – one that includes advocating for social, racial and environmental justice, and Indigenous rights. When I discovered that Rising Appalachia would again have an Official Showcase at Folk Alliance 2020 in New Orleans, I knew I had to try and have a conversation with at least one of the sisters for this podcast. Ironically within a few days of that discovery, Rising Appalachia’s team reached out to me as a registered Folk DJ at the conference, asking if I wanted an interview opportunity in New Orleans. Leah Song aka “The Hustler” and I did sit down late one afternoon for a lovely chat. She could not have been more engaging and accommodating. Enjoy this conversation that highlights the dynamics of being a female led band, the importance of stewardship and cooperation from the male band members, creating a complete aesthetic by adorning themselves with wearable art made by friends and fans, and the band’s commitment to what they call the “slow music” movement. Enjoy my time with Leah Song of Rising Appalachia.

A classically trained musician, James Lee Baker fuses influences from acoustic singer-songwriters like David Mead, Ellis Paul, John Gorka, Gregory Alan Isakov, Bob Dylan, and Slaid Cleaves. He embraces open tunings to create an unconventional but welcoming sound and timbre to his playing. Trained briefly by Richard Gilewitz, a renowned fingerstyle guitar player, James Lee's fingerstyle guitar playing is rich and melodic, pulling listeners into memorable motifs and atmospheres. In 2017, Baker released a Texas-inspired full-length project called “Home Again.” Harnessing his experience in technology, Baker recruited talented studio session musicians, accessing performers from Los Angeles, Canada, The United Kingdom, and Denver. “Home Again” is a Country-flavored Americana album, rich with instrumentation like dobro, lap steel, fiddle, and harmonica. Current single, “Disappear for the Weekend” is receiving airplay and charting on the New Music Weekly and Airplay Today country charts. The same is also true for his previous single, “Cowtown Blues.” In March 2018, he released an EP of Folk/Americana songs called The Canadian River. The single of the same title placed #23 on the FolkDJ radio charts in April of 2018, and the song “Two Cageless Birds” went on to be selected for the John O'Hara Songwriting Performance Grant. www.facebook.com/jamesleebaker www.twitter.com/jlbakermusic www.instagram.com/jamesleebaker www.soundcloud.com/jamesleebaker www.youtube.com/jamesleebaker www.jamesleebaker.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
One of my favorite features of the annual Folk Alliance International conference is the Folk DJ reception. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet Roots Music Artists and their representatives up close and personal. At that reception in 2018, I was approached by a British gentleman, Graham Jackson, asking if I would be willing to meet an Americana artist from the UK, Danni Nicholls. We made arrangements to have a sit down conversation with Danni in the KKFI suite the next day. It was a lovely introduction to her special brand of roots music… that to date has garnered her two consecutive Americana Music Association UK Award nominations… one each for Album and Artist of the year. Danni has played shows with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Sturgill Simpson, and The Secret Sisters and been invited to play at festivals around the world including Cambridge Folk, Americanafest and Folk Alliance International. She is a beautiful and elegant woman and it shows in her music. Her most recent work, The Melted Morning, is very personal but widely relatable… the pain and darkness of rejection, the fear of losing your own identity and the power of human connection to offer up hope in the face of life’s many challenges. Enjoy these few stolen moments with the very talented Danni Nicholls. Now that’s Americana….UK Style!

Texas indie Americana and folk is what David Martinez does and he does it really well, with a little rock snuck in for good measure. A passionate, powerful and determined singer songwriter, Martinez is taking the Texas music scene by storm. He has played at the Texas Indie Fest, Texas Rockfest, and SXSW, with the among others plus toured the state and nationally. With a voice that can belt or croon smooth as glass, he is bringing a refreshing vibe to Texas in his new album, One More Time, produced by Leroy Miller. Now in Corpus Christie, it won’t long before we hear about him far beyond Texas. Spark & Whisper is the musical collaboration of Anita Sandwina & Velvy Appleton, singer-songwriters/multi-instrumentalists from the SF Bay Area who met at the Strawberry Music Festival in Northern California, formed a trio, expanded to a band, changed names and produced two critically acclaimed albums, an east coast tour. Over 100 shows later, Appleton & Sandwina created Spark & Whisper and released their debut album, “Spark & Whisper” to stellar reviews and strong radio play. The album launched the band into 3 years of solid gigging. They teamed up with producer Monica Pasqual of Blame Sally and released their second album, “Ghost Towns” which was embraced by the acoustic/folk radio community and rose on 12 different Folk DJ’s “Top 10 Albums of 2013”.
