This episode is a little love letter to wai in commemorating World Water Day 2022, this year's theme being “Making the Invisible, Visible” with a focus on groundwater to highlight the urgent need to protect it, which comes at a time of great relevance and reverence for us here in Hawaiʻi. Almost all of our liquid freshwater is groundwater, supporting drinking water supplies, sanitation systems, farming, industry and ecosystems. In some places, we simply do not know how much water is down there. But what we do know is that our groundwater and aquifers are essential to our lives and will continue to play a central role in our survival, adapting to the climate crisis and ongoing destabilization to come. But we created this episode to recharge our spirits by amplifying the beautiful connection that we have to wai and one another with mele (song), and mo'olelo (story). We did a little callout and have a diverse set of wahine sharing a piece of themselves with us. The order of the pieces will be: "Flow of Life" by Anna Chua who is the Red Hill organizer at the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi and member of this podcast team with a soul awakening poem about water as life, warrior, and leader of resistance. Followed by Estrella Marin- Ethnic Studies Major at UH Manoa and scuba diver honoring her place of solace and solitude with “Mother Ocean”. Next is powerhouse lawyer, mother, and advocate Rachel James share an empowering story, “Wai-We Gotta Talk About It”, that confronts the years of disconnected thought forced upon wai and one another. And last but not least we finish with epic beats from ʻIhilani Lasconia- Native Hawaiian student, artist, and organizer with Hui Aloha ʻĀina and Af3irm Hawaiʻi gifting us with conscious hip hop, inspiring us to come together to liberate wai, ʻāina, and ourselves- titled “Ola i ka Wai.” Photo credit: Jong Marshes

In an industry that often seems to reward ‘overnight success', is it worth it to perfect your craft,  maintain professional principles, and learn from the best mentors you can find? According to creative entrepreneur, background vocalist and vocal producer Rachel James of Bridge Hooks & Stuff Entertainment, it's more than worth it -  it's the most valuable thing you could do to ensure you maintain a spot in the rough and tumble role of being a backing vocalist.Rachel James began her musical career as a child touring the nation with a gospel group, and quickly learned the professional standards she would be expected to maintain throughout her life. Her career then brought her into an opportunity to work with top gospel artist Darwin Hobbs, who continued to help mold her personal and professional approach to life as a background singer. Noticing a need for a consistent presence in the background vocalist space, she founded Bridge Hooks & Stuff Entertainment in 2009, as a network of professional vocalists that would serve as the  “Go-To” agent for entertainment industry professionals to find singers for their musical endeavors and projects.Since its inception, BHS has served clients in every facet of the entertainment industry, and has provided professional assistance to top industry professionals such as Kevin Bond, Adam Blackstone, Melanie Fiona, Musiq Soulchild, India Arie, Angie Stone and many more. Production credits for Rachel's company include the Trumpet Awards, BET's The Monique Show and Bobby Jones Gospel, Trinity Broadcasting Network's weekly production of “Praise the Lord,” numerous shows on the Gospel Music Channel, and the list continues. In this frank and powerful discussion, Rachel reveals how tough love and consistent mentoring helped her earn the valuable respect and reputation needed to sustain a career in the music industry. Now as a leader in the field herself, she is partnering with other top industry professionals to offer training opportunities like The Blended Training Day, which she is co-hosting in the summer of 2020 with fellow background singer Jasmine Crumley. In this interview, you will learn: How being trained at an early age affects your outlook on performingHow Rachel struggled figure out professional standards and apply them - both for her self and her clients The mentors that helped her make the shift to being a professional business ownerWhy you might need to stay close to your current position, and when to shift and take a riskThe importance of investing in training development and knowledge How her new event will bring together the biggest names in the industry to help train BGVS and artists the essential tools for success as a background vocalistLearn more about Rachel Bridges, Hooks and Stuff EntertainmentRegister for The Blended Training DayConnect with Rachel on InstagramFollow BHS on InstagramOther Resources: Learn about The 4 Questions you need to ask before going Full-Time in Arts and EntertainmentJoin our God and Gigs Facebook Group so you can watch more of our Facebook Live chats!

Caveh Zahedi conflates reality TV, experimental documentary, and discomfort comedy in unsettling high-stakes films about his own life. In each episode of his TV project The Show about the Show, the actors and crew recreate the conflicts, interpersonal dramas, and unwittingly shared secrets that occurred during the filming of the previous episode. Each level takes us further behind the performance, landing the viewer deep inside the eccentric mind of Caveh himself. With an oddly life-affirming honesty, his work violates ethical boundaries and triggers the unraveling of his marriage. Is it worth losing someone you love to make the art you believe in? When the Organist sends producer Rachel James to document the production of his TV show, she too becomes drawn into Caveh’s inescapable vortex of metanarrative.
