After a week preparing in Great Falls, Montana. I have finally begun paddling my way down the Missouri River with the first stop in Ft. Benton. Known as the birthplace of Montana. This small town has an incredible connection to the river and the arts. I ended up playing two shows here, one at the Public House and another at Wake Cup Coffee House. That being said, the true gold in this town is its people. Something that continues to amaze me is how many wonderful human beings can be found in communities I would consider to be hidden gems. This makes for a great segway to introducing my guests, the incredibly talented Folk-Americana duo known as the Lucky Valentines. They were kind of enough to host me during my stay in Ft. Benton and we dived deep into talking about some of my favorite subjects: life, songwriting, and a little bit of everything else. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Alright, we're settling back into our usual grove with to some new releases recommendations on this week's show. We've scoured the new release charts and review columns from the last few months to bring you these 2 new records that we think simply rock. And as an added bonus they're both uplifting, positive records which is always welcomed to help fight the post-holiday blues. The Dude's pick comes from a singer/songwriter hailing from Pennsylvanian by the name of Longhorne Slim. He put out a charming Folk/Americana record towards the end of 2017 that has been putting on smile on our faces ever since. His sound is Cat Stevens meets Bob Dylan. His lyrical content deals with life's trials and tribulations, but always with a wry smile and a sense of ‘it'll be alright'. The accompanying music ranges from stripped down to straight-up hoe-down. Longhorne sound right at home with both. And that's seems to be his secret sauce – sounding unique and genuine while still appealing to most everyone. This is a record most every music lover will find themselves smiling along too.Andy's pick comes from across the pond in London, England and a post-punk group named Shopping. Towards the of January they released ‘The Official Body' a dance-orientated rock record that is immediately likable. The three-piece sets the outsiders mentality of punk to a very groove-orientated rock beat. The sharp, angular guitars fit neatly between the anthemic, shouted vocals. Fans of LCD Soundsystem and B-52s will find themselves right at home on the short-but-sweet album.Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. And keep that nerd nice n' toasty!

2022 Canadian Folk Music Award winning singer-songwriter Alicia Toner joins the show this week to talk about making the most of an album release. Her sophomore album "Joan" (absolutely fantastic) was released on June 25, 2021. Aside from releasing singles and music videos leading up to and following the release of the album, what caught my interest was what she did 1-year later. She celebrated the 1-year anniversary by releasing a new radio-edit from the album as a single, bringing renewed attention to the song and the project as a whole - brilliant! The song "Tonight" A gripping Folk-Americana song about allowing oneself to let go of reservation and leap into love features long time collaborator and JUNO Award winner Joey Landreth. So often we feel like a project is old or has no life left in it as we move forward to create something new for people to see and hear. Alicia's success in re-visiting the release of her 1-year old album is a perfect reminder that despite the age of our previous work, there is still an audience that has yet to discover it.Watch the video interviewhttps://aliciatoner.ca/"Release Day," an ongoing series where we sit down with Canadian musicians of all genres to discuss their latest releases from singles to albums, and their strategy behind releasing it to the world.https://releasedayseries.com/https://twitter.com/ReleasedaySrshttps://www.instagram.com/releaseday_series/

September 29, 2021: Whirling fiercely in the wake of wildfires, fear-induced headlines and a pandemic in its path was the too-real tornado that struck Nashville in March 2020. Admittedly shaken up by the storm, Folk-Americana singer/songwriter Calista Garcia snapped out of fear by turning to music… specifically, “Banana Pancakes” by Jack Johnson. As howling winds have continued over the past year, Calista has kept her calm by tapping back into this feeling through renewed awareness of the beauty that remains. On nature walks by her house, for example, she has come to notice how the canopies of leaves wave hello as she walks by; it is from this tender place, she has created a musical world to reflect what she has witnessed. Lending her lyrics now to listeners, Calista Garcia's “A Beautiful World” EP, out October 29th, 2021, provides refuge through the power of rose-colored perspective. “I created ‘A Beautiful World' to be an expression of radical optimism,” Calista shares. “Optimism, not because life is full of sunshine and rainbows, but rather in spite of how tough it can be... I think holding knowledge of the bad and still believing good can prevail is the bravest thing we can do.” As she has accessed hope through songwriting, Calista has found herself writing the EP in solitude from safe places like the park benches nearby, her piano and the floor of her bedroom. Notably, the only co-write on the EP, “After You're Gone,” came from a Zoom collaboration with Rachel Weisbart and Patrick Oberstaedt of the Gender Gnomes; speaking to the loss of family members during the pandemic, this song has already moved listeners to tears including composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa. Produced by Buddy Speir and Calista Garcia at 38 North Studio, “A Beautiful World” was engineered by Sean Russell (Damien & Stephen Marley, Allison Krauss, Bruno Mars), mixed by Grammy Award Winner Jim Scott of Plyrz Studios (The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Sting, Foo Fighters) and mastered by Grammy Award Winner Richard Dodd (Dixie Chicks, Tom Petty, Boz Scaggs). Featured musicians include Calista Garcia (vocals, acoustic, electric and resonator guitar, harmonica, Wirlitzer electric piano), Buddy Speir (acoustic & electric guitar, Wurliter electric piano, percussion), Harrison Finks (Hammond B3 organ, piano), Eric Scott (bass, backing vocals), Ben Tufts (drums, percussion), Denise Garcia (backing vocals) and Jim Scott (percussion). Without question, Calista Garcia's fiercely-hopeful disposition has continued to propel her music career forward. In spite of its challenges, 2021 has managed to be a hallmark year as Calista was recently nominated Chris Austin Songwriting Finalist at MerleFest, playing a summer of live shows alongside Bad Cameo and as a part of Show X's tour with The Last Real Circus. Previous releases include her critically-acclaimed debut EP “Wild Woman” (2019) which was selected in the 2020 Independent Music Awards for “Best Roots/Country EP,” recognized by the International Music Awards (IAMA), International Songwriting Competition (ISC) and the Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest (MASC). In addition, Calista Garcia's extensive musical history includes her title as 2020's National YoungArts Gold Winner in Voice/Singer-Songwriter, 2021 Alicia Key's She is the Music Foundation Songwriting Fellow, 2020 Johnny Mercer Songwriting Project Fellow, 2017-18 Berklee Performance Showcase Winner, 2017 Bernard Ebbs Young Songwriter of the Year and two-time Grammy Foundation Young Songwriter Program Artist. As Calista continues to shine light onstage, tour plans continue with an upcoming show at The Birchmere alongside the renowned Rick Wakeman of “Yes” on October 24th, 2021. In Calista's words, “My greatest wish is that this song helps you as a listener let go of your fears, and feel a little freer from your hangups. This really is a beautiful world we get to live in.” -https://www.themarketingmixtape.com/pressrelease-abeautifulworld --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loveletterstovirginia/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loveletterstovirginia/support

What would it feel like to sit down with one of your *all-time favorite singers or songwriters and simply have an authentic one hour conversation with them? The album "Where I Lived and What I lived For" by Scott Orr quite literally changed my life. And for those that don't know, I love Folk & Americana music. And when I first heard this album, almost ten years ago, I literally played it for a month straight. To me, Scott's voice and lyrics hold the tension of "ache & comfort" and I had a chance to share how his album impacted me -- as well as finding out more about the man behind the music, on my last podcast interview of season 2. Hope you enjoy our conversation. x --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/togethergoodco/support
In 2017, Baker released a Texas-inspired full-length project called “Home Again.” Harnessing his experience in technology, Baker recruited talented studio session musicians, accessing performers from Los Angeles, Canada, The United Kingdom, and Denver. “Home Again” is a Country-flavored Americana album, rich with instrumentation like dobro, lap steel, fiddle, and harmonica. Current single, “Disappear for the Weekend” is receiving airplay and charting on the New Music Weekly and Airplay Today country charts. The same is also true for his previous single, “Cowtown Blues.” In March 2018, he released an EP of Folk/Americana songs called The Canadian River. The single of the same title placed #23 on the FolkDJ radio charts in April of 2018, and the song “Two Cageless Birds” went on to be selected for the John O'Hara Songwriting Performance Grant. www.jamesleebaker.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sashamarinamedia/message
