With a newborn baby keeping Chris from getting a slick new episode finished, we've decided to share one of our premium monthly live shows with the public for the very first time. And not just any episode. The VERY FIRST episode! Back when we were young and dumb and a technical abomination. It was a real learning experience, and only got better from there. Don't love every word we say? Ok, weirdo. Here's some "chapters" to find what you DO love: 00:00:00 - Housekeeping and Explainer 00:05:47 - The Doomsday Fish Hath Spoken 00:08:18 - SATT Live! Episode 01 00:09:18 - Audience Welcome and Check-In 00:18:43 - Moose Are Gonna Moose 00:30:19 - Emotional Support Gators 00:45:39 - Square Update 00:50:06 - Getting Ready for Monster Fest 00:54:49 - Turbulent Terror 00:59:55 - Roadtrip to Ohio 01:05:56 - Live is Live - Ed Pees 01:09:25 - If it's Boeing, Maybe You're Not Going 01:26:23 - Monster of the Susquehanna 01:29:34 - Thoughts on the First Episode 01:34:08 - Wrap Up You can find the FULL ORIGINAL STREAM with corresponding chapters embedded as a companion to this audio-only version RIGHT HERE. This episode has no show notes, but here's cell phone footage of Ellis Paul -- that singer-songwriter Ed was talking about -- singing about Homer, AK. And the Mary Roach books someone recommended were Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law and Animal Vegetable Criminal.

Ellis Paul doesn't just write songs; he's a guitar-carrying reporter who covers the human condition and details the hopes, loves, losses of those he observes, turning their stories into luminous pieces of music that get under your skin and into your bloodstream. And much like the artists who have influenced him, everyone from Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter who is undoubtedly his greatest inspiration, Woody Guthrie, Paul weaves deeply personal experiences with social issues and renders them as provocative works that are as timely as they are timeless. Born and raised in Maine, Paul attended Boston College on a track scholarship and in the evenings became a fixture on the city's open mic circuit. After winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition, he caught the ear of folk luminary Bill Morrissey, who produced his indie album Say Something in 1993. This led to a seven- album contract with Rounder Records and the 1994 album, Stories. His songs have appeared in several blockbuster films (Me, Myself, and Irene; Shallow Hal, Hall Pass) and have been covered by award winning country artists (Sugarland, Kristian Bush, Jack Ingram). Through a steady succession of albums of his own – a remarkable 23 releases so far – and a constant touring presence around the world, Paul's audience has grown into a loyal legion of fans. Learn more about Ellis Paul at www.ellispaul.comHost Lee Zimmerman is a freelance music writer whose articles have appeared in several leading music industry publications. Lee is a former promotions representative for ABC and Capital Records and director of communications for various CBS affiliated television stations. Lee authored "Americana Music - Voices, Visionaries & Pioneers of an Honest Sound," as well as his recent book about legendary producer and engineer Jim Gains "Thirty Years Behind The Glass," both are now available on Amazon and other outlets.Lee also played a key role in securing airplay for Jimmy Buffett's first major hit, “Margaritaville” so you can blame him for the fact that it's become something akin to a Parrot heads' national anthem! During his time at Capital records Lee also worked with such legends as Paul McCartney, Bob Seger, the Steve Miller Band, and others. You can contact Lee at lezim@bellsouth.net and find him online at https://www.storiesbeyondthemusic.comPodcast producer/cohost Billy Hubbard is a Tennessee based Americana Singer/Songwriter and former Regional Director of A&R for a Grammy winning company, as well as a music and podcast producer. Singer/Songwriter Releases New Album In 9 Years#singersongwriter #newmusic #folkmusic #jimtyrell #piano Singer/Songwriter Jim Tyrrell has released his fifth studio album, and his first album of new material in 9 years! This album includes the singles “The Joke” and “Closing Day” as well as eight other brand new songs, and a Bandcamp-exclusive bonus track.Says Jim, “The songs on this album are of various ages. Some were finished during the recording process, and some are almost 20 years old. Each is an artifact, a keepsake from a particular time and place – a shell collected on a long walk on the shore. Recording took place at my studio in New Hampshire, and at the studio of Tod Moses in Vermont. Tod provided drums and production of several of the songs as well.”Jim Tyrrell has been a mainstay in the New England music scene for the last 30 years. He has written and recorded four solo albums (and two with folk trio The Midweeklings). He performs over 200 solo, duo, Dueling Pianos, and full band shows annually, and over the years, Jim has opened for Don McLean, Ellis Paul, The Avett Brothers, John Prine, and Weird Al Yankovic.Website: https://boxofshells.com/To purchaseStreaming:https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/jimtyrrell/box-of-shellsBandcamp:https://robojackrecords.bandcamp.com/album/box-of-shellsYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@jimtyrrellInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jimtyrrell/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jimtyrrellThanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteFor all our social media and other links, go to: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastPlease subscribe, like, and share!

We believe you must feel it to heal it. Embracing what it means to be human makes life a bit easier to manage, at least we'd like to think so. This includes realizing that it's you alone in our decision to unlock the door and escape from within. Epiosde one seventy seven of Above Ground Podcast is all about those pesky feelings we need to find a language to discuss. This week we got Inpired by the Flotsam and Jetsam tune, Escape From Within. We hold the key to our escape. We all have limited time with this thing called life being terminal in all. When we awaken to this idea, it places the responsibility squarely on us to sign the contract of death that begs to be signed when we scream our way out of the womb onto the earth stage. Journaling is a great tool to use to filter your feelings. Having the language to describe what sludge and debris blocks us from our path. Byron Katie's The Work, could be a useful place for you to start. Ellis Paul says the world aint slowin' down and our real time practice in the human condition takes acceptance and action. When we build these muscles it helps us deepen our capacity to juggle. When we juggle the years like chainsaws don't kill the power. This Saturday Will is performing at Fuze Box 12 Central Avenue Albany, NY. 8pm showtime $10 at the door. Above Ground Podcast fans come see Will & TPP do a very special song to close out the set. Hope to see many of you there. TPP is launching his book, Never Underestimate the Power of You, on November 11th, and you will be able to purchase through Amazon. When we have a link we will post it everywhere. Be sure to check in on our social media. Thanks so much for listening this week. Continue following, sharing and being the hope dealers we are. Until next Wednesday, get well, be safe, Stay Above...

Have you been thinking about starting a Patreon but aren't sure how to go about it? Scared no one will sign up? In this episode we revisit a conversation with independent artist Rebecca Loebe who was so successful at launching, Patreon even wrote an article about her after she raised funds for her album. Rebecca Loebe is an independent singer-songwriter who you may remember from the Voice in 2011. Since then she has opened for Shawn Colvin, the Civil Wars, Gregory Alan Isakov, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Ellis Paul amongst others. Her single, Growing Up was featured in Rolling Stone magazine listed as the Top 10 Best Country and Americana Songs of the Week. As well as being a talented musician, she has also become quite an expert at owning her own distribution and runs a successful Patreon page - and Patreon even featured Rebecca on their blog after her successful album promotion. I also mention a couple of Shure mics you can check out during the Holiday sales - Shure MV7 podcast and vocal mic Shure SM58 - most durable stage & recording mic ever created! As promised, here are the links and references discussed in today's episode: Patreon's article on Rebecca: https://blog.patreon.com/rebecca-loebe Patreon's article on Nataly Dawn: https://blog.patreon.com/nataly-dawn-patronage Amanda Palmer "The Art of Asking" TED talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/amanda_palmer_the_art_of_asking?language=en Simon Sinek "Start With Why" TED talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action?language=en Rebecca's Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/rebeccaloebe We'd love to hear any feedback about this miniseries or any suggestions you have for episodes! Vance Gilbert makes us laugh like no one else. From how he met Ellis Paul (not in a bordello) to his big, big dreams (being a cocktail singer) to his heart's most secret desire (to be Shawn Colvin), Vance sees the world from a slightly different perspective than other people. Listen to his chat with Cheryl for road stories from Vance's days as an opening act for George Carlin, the truth about how many pairs of airplane pajamas he really owns, and how to get the guitar out of your damn way.
Celebrate our 10th episode with the incredible Ellis Paul, a musician and storyteller with a gift for making personal stories feel universal. Through music, poetry, and illustration, Ellis is an unparalleled creative force. From tiny open mics in Boston, to sold-out shows and Hollywood soundtracks, to his latest chapter as a mentor, teacher, and on-line artist, Ellis never stops looking towards the future and for ways to improve his music. Because of this, he continues surprise us all, taking the last year as an opportunity for a huge leap into digital performance. Don't miss this personal conversation with Cheryl about his life in music, getting a song in Me, Myself, & Irene, and the time he helped stop a nearly naked carjacker in the snows of Wisconsin!

Ellis Paul! The one and only. This has been a long time coming. The Maine-born musician is famous for helping establish the “Boston Songwriter Sound” in the late 80's, 90's and 2000's. He grew up on a potato farm and became a national track star, which earned him a scholarship to Boston University. Ellis started learning and playing guitar after an injury sidelined him. He began seeking out open mics in the city and came across Club Passim in Harvard Square, Cambridge, where he now holds the record of the most shows played there ever. We talk about the early days, playing over 200 shows a year, Woody Guthrie, living with Dupuytren Syndrome and how that has affected his playing. He's been a favorite of mine for a long time and it was great to be able to prepared for this interview and listen to all his songs again, including his latest album The Storyteller's Suitcase. We talk about a couple of standouts on that album including a song where he explains the afterlife to his 5 year old daughter. Oof. Ellis Paul! Thanks for listening! “Tamara Hey's soaring voice has charmed and captivated audiences throughout her native New York for over a decade. She writes meticulously detailed, magically crystallized three-minute pop songs which, just like her vocals, are disarmingly deep. She's also one of the great wits in music: an edgy sense of humor spices Hey's narratives and character studies, even in the gloomiest moments. And her punchlines have O. Henry irony and Amy Rigby bittersweetness. The title of Hey's album Miserably Happy pretty much says it all.” – New York Music DailyShe also happens to be the rare music-schooled musician who doesn't waste notes or let her chops get in the way of saying something as directly as possible, musically or lyrically. That sense of purpose and craftsmanship translates to her career as a music educator: she's a popular guitar teacher and for the past ten years, Hey's Alphabet City Music Workshops for music theory, transcription and arranging have built a following, especially among singer-songwriters.Hey got her start in the Lower East Side's edgy singer-songwriter scene in the early part of this century, in the days before the gritty, artistic neighborhood was taken over by real estate speculators. Inspired by the fearlessness and sardonic humor of classic punk, the catchiness and wit of 60s Brill Building pop and the quirky fun of new wave, Hey quickly gained a following in bars and listening rooms in New York including the Fast Folk Cafe, CB's Gallery, the Bottom Line, Rockwood Music Hall and the Slipper Room. She's shared the stage with artists including David Massengill, Jack Hardy, Ellis Paul, to name a few.Her third album, Miserably Happy, has been called a high water mark of that scene. Tamara's catalog of original songwriting includes three previous albums: Right This Minute, A Little Space Left, and a children's album, Sharing the Same Stars. In addition, Tamara's work appears on three Fast Folk Magazine compilations: Local Charm, New Voices NYC, and Rebirth, issued on Smithsonian Folkways Records. The EditorsNew York Music Daily/Lucid CultureReview of Tamara Hey at Rockwood Music Hallhttp://lucidculture.wordpress.com

Throw heaping amounts of talent, determination and hard work into a pot; add a few tablespoons of timely mentorship, healthy competition and the kindness of strangers — and don’t forget a dash of good old-fashioned luck —and that’s your recipe for Contemporary Folk Music legend Ellis Paul. Over a 30 year arc, Ellis has logged more than 5,000 shows and earned scores of accolades and awards (let’s save time and just say all the prestigious folk music awards). He's released 20 albums, landed songs in major motion pictures, and been a featured performer at countless major folk and songwriters’ festivals. He’s even picked up an honorary PhD and been the subject of a documentary. Yet he remains humble, open and as inspired as ever to create new music, turning out some of his finest, most vital work ever on his latest 2019 release, The Storyteller’s Suitcase. We were thrilled by how generous Ellis was with his time in sharing hard-won insights into every aspect of what it takes to carve out a living, and a life, as a musician. We want to share it all with you, so we’re making this a two-parter. Enjoy Episode 1 now, and watch for Episode 2 of our visit with Ellis Paul.

He embraces open tunings to create an unconventional but welcoming sound and timbre to his playing. Trained briefly by Richard Gilewitz, a renowned fingerstyle guitar player, James Lee's fingerstyle guitar playing is rich and melodic, pulling listeners into memorable motifs and atmospheres. Current single, “Disappear for the Weekend” is receiving airplay and charting on the New Music Weekly and Airplay Today country charts. The same is also true for his previous single, “Cowtown Blues.” In March 2018, he released an EP of Folk/Americana songs called The Canadian River. The single of the same title placed #23 on the FolkDJ radio charts in April of 2018, and the song “Two Cageless Birds” went on to be selected for the John O'Hara Songwriting Performance Grant. www.facebook.com/jamesleebaker www.twitter.com/jlbakermusic www.instagram.com/jamesleebaker www.soundcloud.com/jamesleebaker www.youtube.com/jamesleebaker www.jamesleebaker.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Find The Song Writer's Gig on iTunes and Stitcher James Lee Baker was born in Amarillo, Texas with music in his veins. His mother played guitar, his father played drums, his grandmother wrote Gospel music and his grandfather was a concert pianist. James took the inspiration from his family and began working to play music and create his own musical identity. He began participating in open mics in his late teens and created a song catalogue that resulted in his first album being “Saturday” released when he was 18 years old. His early sound was rock and pop driven but then he started hearing talents like John Gorka and became interested in the singer/songwriters genre. The real spark came when he heard a song from the soundtrack of “Me, Myself & Irene” called “The World Ain't Slowing Down” by Ellis Paul. James moved to Denver in 2009 and continued writing and developing his sound. The ensuing years were filled with hard work, frequent gigging and continuing down the singer/songwriter path. Having met Ellis Paul and following his music more closely, James decided to study with him and was mentored by Ellis for roughly a year in 2017. I met James in 2017 at Ellis Paul's New England Songwriters Retreat and he immediately distinguished himself as one of the real special talents attending the event. At last year's retreat, James started off one of the mornings by playing an amazing song, “The Last Cowboy of Hutchinson County”. He tells about his grandfather and father with such clear memories that you are drawn in and captivated. Enjoy this episode as James closes it by playing “The Last Cowboy of Hutchinson County” and “Leave the Saving Souls for Later”. Find James and his music at www.jamesleebaker.com

Encore release December 3, 2018. Encore release August 26, 2017. It's War on Christmas! There is no War on Christmas--there's only a war on the alleged War on Christmas. Example: A new group called Faith Driven Consumers has published the so-called Faith Equality Index, which ranks major companies on, among other things, whether they use "Christmas" in their holiday literature, discriminate against LGBT persons, or oppose women's sexual freedom. Basically, if you're a bigot they want Christians to shop at your store. So...we're encouraging our listeners to do the opposite: if Faith Driven Consumers don't like a company, we love 'em. Plus: We offer our annual Top Five Suggestions for Gifts for Nonbelievers: David's list: 5. The Story of God by Chris Matheson 4. A subscription to Skeptic magazine. 3. A charitable donation in your friend of family member's name to the Freedom from Religion Foundation. 2. A trip to France! Show your support and show you're not afraid. 1. Singer/songwriter Ellis Paul's new children's book The Night the Lights Went Out on Christmas and/or his new album of original holiday music City of Silver Dreams. John's list: 5. The albums of Baba Brinkman. 4. For shock value: A statuette of Baphomet (look on eBay or etsy). 3. A charitable donation in your friend or family member's name to the Humanist Society. 2. The albums of Eagles of Death Metal (the band that was playing Le Bataclan in Paris during the November 13 terrorist attacks). 1. The 30-meter long fold-out science book "Evo" by Dutch artist Jurian Moller. In other news: Presidential candidate Ted Cruz implies that nonbelievers aren't fit to become president. Presidential candidate John Kasich says he'll create a federal organization to promote "Judeo-Christian" values. (He later tried to walk that back a bit.) How knowledgeable are you on world religions? Try your hand at the "Are You Smarter Than an Atheist" quiz. Go see the film Spotlight. Stop arguing. Just go.

In this episode of Mentoring for the Modern Musician the boys are THRILLED to sit down with Legendary songwriting troubadour Ellis Paul! A long overdue catching up and digging into details of his life as a uniquely successful performer and poster child for talent and hard work! Spanning an almost 30-year career there is a lot to unpack. Enjoy this conversation with a true American treasure! Ellis Paul is a key figure in what has become known as the Boston school of songwriting, a literate, provocative, and urbanely romantic folk-pop style that helped ignite the folk revival of the 1990s. His pop music songs have appeared in movies and on television, bridging the gap between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Paul grew up in a small Maine town. He attended Boston College on a track scholarship, majoring in English. Injured during his junior year, Paul began playing guitar to help fill his free time and soon began writing songs. After graduating college Paul played at open mic nights in the Boston area while working with inner-city school children. He won a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition and gained national exposure on a Records compilation which helped him choose music as a career. Paul had released 19 albums by the end of 2014 and received 14 Boston Music Awards, considered the pinnacle of contemporary acoustic music success by some. He has published a book of original lyrics, poems, and drawings and released a DVD that includes a live performance, guitar instruction, and a road-trip documentary. In 2014, his children's CD Hero in You was published as a book by Albert Whitman & Company. Paul plays almost 200 live shows a year. Zion Rodman is a versatile musician who spends his free time singing and playing the guitar, bass, piano, and drums. He grew up in Cape Cod, MA, where he played around the cape since the age of 15 and eventually received a BA in music from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. He grew a fan base in New England and by 2017, Zion was performing at historic venues like Club Passim, Caffe Lena, and the House of Blues. He opened for national acts that include Ellis Paul and Jeffrey Gaines. In the summer of 2017, Zion teamed up with producer Alex Katz and released his debut full-length record You're Invited. The folk-rock album received praise and local media attention following its anticipated release. Crossfader Magazine wrote that in an era of "lo-fi bedroom projects, it's refreshing to hear a young creative voice this professionally produced, fully realized, and cohesively structured around a distinct personality and energy." Less than a year later, Zion released an EP titled "Did Not Wake up Today" on January 20th, 2018. This project features heavier topics and harder rock than his debut album. Even before its release, the title track was recognized by AFROPUNK: "Rodman turns up the volume of his melodic indie pop, with his stunning voice just barely masking his anger beneath the hook." Zion currently lives in Chicago with his girlfriend and his cat. While getting settled in a new city, he is exploring folk venues and putting together a professional band to dig into the midwest rock scene. He will be touring from Chicago to Boston in early May of 2018.Click here to see all the videos from this show

Now, with 20+ years of playing 150 to 200 shows annually, 19 record releases, fifteenBoston Music Awards, a documentary film, a book of poems/shortstories, an award winning children's book project, as well as songs featured on Hollywood soundtracks, he makes Bostons music scene proud. Elliss new album, Chasing Beauty, is a set of songs which detail, in typical Paul fashion, stories of people and places that reflect larger truths about us all. SOCKS IN THE FRYING PAN are a trio of talented traditional Irish Musicians based in Co. Clare in the West of Ireland. Having gained a fan-base from four years of gigging around the west of Ireland, this exciting group have recently started branching out and have been well received for their modern traditional style and energetic approach to music. The band was named 2014 New Group of the year for both theLiveIrelandAwardsand theTradition in Review Awards. They just released their self-titled debut album.
