This week, I'm joined by Radio Milwaukee's very own, the one and only Dori Zori. What a treat! We jump in the Cinebuds bus to discuss a new documentary about a Louisiana staple, “Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story” (watch the trailer: https://youtu.be/IObrxC6iYgE).
JAZZ FEST: A NEW ORLEANS STORY celebrates 50 years of the Jazz Music and Heritage Festival in New Orleans. The documentary seeks to educate viewers on everything related to jazz music. Several facets of jazz, R&B, soul, and rock music are explored, including their roots in African music and black gospel music. Many artists interviewed convey deep love for the music, and for New Orleans, where the festival originated. Although tough subjects like slavery and Hurricane Katrina are discussed, the documentary pays homage to the festival in a tasteful way.
#745 - Mac McAnally - Third Interview Mac McAnally makes his third appearance on The Paul Leslie Hour. Okay, good folks welcome to The Paul Leslie Hour, home of decent, quality interviews for more than 18 years. The special guest here is singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and Mailboat Records recording artist Mac McAnally. If you've been counting, like Paul does, this is Mac McAnally's third interview on this show. Your host, Paul E. Leslie considers McAnally one of the greatest purveyors of semi-true stories. Now, Mac is a man with Mississippi roots, something he shares with his longtime friend, Jimmy Buffett who was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi. And, you may remember another singer, Elvis Presley was born in the Magnolia State. So, this interview touches on somewhat disparate subjects. Like, Elvis Presley and his connections to Jimmy Buffett and that documentary JAZZ FEST: A New Orleans Story, now streaming online, that everyone is talking about. Paul won't shut up about it. Plus some other odds and ends. Mac McAnally has released 14 studio albums, but if you haven't seen him live, it may make a lifelong impression on you. We're saying so because Mac is far too humble to say it. He's got some solo shows throughout the year. Catch him if you can, and he's also performing with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band throughout the year. Just be sure and wave at Mac when Jimmy introduces him on the stage. And Mac will wave back, he always does. Well, there is a show Jimmy Buffett and the band will be doing in Antartica this December. If Mac doesn't wave back, he's probably just cold. As always, you can support the Paul Leslie Hour by listening in just like you are. Yet another way, is by going to thepaulleslie.com/support and you'll know what to do when you're there. #729 - Clarence "Frogman" Henry The original Clarence "Frogman" Henry Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Now, there is an interview floating around out there of Paul Leslie interviewing rhythm & blues singer Clarence “Frogman” Henry, that was recorded in the Frogman's home in New Orleans. But, there was an interview recorded over the telephone from before that. It went out on the radio in 2008, never to be heard again. Until now. We're making it available. Jimmy Buffett once sang “I cut my teeth on gumbo rock, Benny Spellman and Doctor John, Sweet Irma Thomas and Frogman Henry use to boogie woogie all night long.” It was a fitting tribute. Jimmy Buffett is just one of many singers influenced by Clarence “Frogman” Henry. Frogman's songs like "I Don't Know Why, But I Do," have been loved by young and old. With over SEVENTY years in show biz, his artistic name originates from the lyrics of million hit "Ain't Got no Home." Frogman is one of the original performers of New Orleans Rhythm'n Blues. He is voted into Rockabilly, Westbank, Delta and Gulf Halls of Fame (and several more) including the prestigious Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Clarence “Frogman” Henry has entertained our Presidents and toured with the greatest - from The Beatles to Tina Turner, Dr John, James Brown and Little Richard. Frogman appears at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival every year where he always makes new fans and friends. Frogman Henry joins The Paul Leslie Hour to talk about his life in music, what makes New Orleans unique, his time touring with the Beatles, and his friendship with Jimmy Buffett. Speaking of which, June 3rd, today is the national theatre premiere of the fun and fascinating documentary film Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story. Please go out and see it, you'll be very glad you did. And please let Paul know what you think! You can also help The Paul Leslie Hour to continue in our work. Just go to thepaulleslie.com/support And we thank you! And now, ladies and gentlemen. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy will be at the Chicago Critics Film Festival this week, but they still managed to find time for ten new movie reviews. Well, one old one as they reviewed Ninja Thyberg's powerful film about the porn industry at last year's Sundance (Pleasure). This week did have a lot of other ickiness to it though including an erotic thriller no-show with Ashley Benson (Private Property) and the documentary about Dr. Religious Wacko who personally inseminated his patients (Our Father). Then maybe icky in a good way is at least one kids-who-can't-control-their-own-powers film (The Innocents) and another about a virus running violently amok influencing the worst parts of our brains (The Sadness). But Steve also talks a positive pandemic story about music (Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story) while Erik looks at Christina Ricci trying to protect her son from an entity in a lake (Monstrous) and Rebel Wilson wakes up after 20 years in a coma and still wants to be prom queen (Senior Year). Then for those looking for a breezy true matinee tale of war, the guys may have one for you (Operation Mincemeat). However if you were hoping Blumhouse Productions would offer something better than the 1984 adaptation of a Stephen King novel, you better listen to what Erik & Steve have to say about it first (Firestarter). 0:00 - Intro 1:00 – Pleasure 13:43 – Private Property 22:14 – Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story 28:29 – Monstrous 34:42 – Our Father 42:30 – Senior Year 53:49 – The Innocents 1:02:24 - The Sadness 1:09:51 – Operation Mincemeat 1:20:26 – Firestarter 1:42:25 - Outro
