As gun violence persists in the Gulf South, community members in Shreveport, Louisiana are reckoning with last year's mass shootings and murders. And locals are pointing to the area's history of mass incarceration as a contributing factor. In part two of our series on gun violence in the region, the Gulf States Newsroom's Kat Stromquist traveled to Northern Louisiana and met residents who say decades of locking people up hasn't worked. In the U.S., Black Americans are 40 percent more likely to live in areas where the chance of dying from climate change is higher than average. They're also disproportionately affected by environmental pollution. That's why the national nonprofit, The Hip Hop Caucus, is trying to leverage hip-hop culture to raise awareness. The Coastal Desk's Halle Parker went to last weekend's Essence Fest to learn more about the caucus's latest initiatives. She also spoke with Big Freedia to learn why the iconic New Orleans performer is joining the fight against petrochemicals. Big Freedia isn't the only New Orleanian working on creative solutions to combat climate change. In fact, a new $50,000grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies will invest in environmental initiatives led by youth.Reporter for Verite News Safura Syed joins us for more on the program and how to apply. This summer has been a scorcher, with multiple heat records already broken. We're about to go on our annual summer break, but we wanted to leave you with something to enjoy while we're away! This episode, we've got two Christmas songs that might just be your new hot summer jam. "Make It Jingle" by Big Freedia will have you shaking a number of both literal and metaphorical things, and "Stripper Christmas Summer Weekend" by GWAR is better than that sounds, we swear! Correction: in this episode we accidentally combined two soundtrack credits for "Make It Jingle", the film Office Christmas Party and the game Just Dance 2018. The TV show that the recently evil search engine suggested was probably "Christmas Party", an episode of The Office, which is still not a show, per se, so let's say we're all in the wrong here. The ranking clip in this episode is Big Freedia in Beyonce's "Formation"! That's worded oddly because she's not a "featured" artist for whatever reason!

Instructions For A Future: Conversation with Amaryllis R. Flowers

Nine years after our first conversation on Broken Boxes Podcast, I got to circle back with one of my besties, and the incredible artist now known as Amaryllis R. Flowers. Amaryllis works across materials from drawing to video, to performance to clay, creating a visual language paying attention to the spaces in-between categories, and revering those that know the trouble and pleasure there. It was a warm early summer day and we sat outside in the clover fields at the Rockefeller Brothers Estate in New York where Amaryllis was an artist in residence at the Pocantico Center. In our conversation, Amaryllis reflects on her journey in claiming and reframing what the term Artist can mean, how it can evolve. She gives us a glimpse into the adventures and miseducation of the formal art school path and how her experiences in academia have had lasting effects on her life and practice, both positive and negative. Amaryllis takes some time to speak vulnerably about mental health and how stigmatized certain diagnoses still are in our society. She shares her own path of healing over the past few years and provides tangible resources and support systems she has gleaned in finding wellness. We speak to her current experience of reclaiming her way as Artist, as she reforms a more balanced and generative relationship with her practice and the artworld. Amaryllis R. Flowers is a Queer Puerto Rican American Artist living and working in upstate New York. Raised between multiple cities and rural communities across America in a constantly shifting landscape, her practice explores themes of hybridity, mythology and sexuality. Drawing inspiration from visual systems of communication such as comics, cartoons, codices, Egyptian scrolls, sympathetic magic, Caribbean Surrealisms, and alchemical diagrams for transformation, Amaryllis  creates non-linear symbol sets that buck colonial notions of how to navigate and describe our world. Where taste has been constructed by these notions, she aims to create work of questionable taste, utilizing color and material classed as “femme” and casting it to the center of the circle. Illuminated with fluorescents, metallics, and iridescence, these images refuse a naturalizing aesthetic of the universe.Amaryllis earned an MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2019 and her BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts in 2014. She is the recipient of the 2023 Pocantico Prize from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, a 2022-2027 Joan Mitchell Fellow, and a 2021 Creative Capital Awardee. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including at the Brooklyn Museum, El Museo Del Barrio (New York), The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art (Ridgefield, CT), MoCADA (Brooklyn), and SOMArts (San Francisco).  https://www.amaryllisartist.com Featured Song: Goin' Looney by Big Freedia

Just a few weeks ago, New Orleans' own Big Freedia debuted her new series, Big Freedia Means Business. The show follows the Queen of Bounce's new music and entrepreneurial endeavors since her last documentary series, “Big Freedia Bounces Back.”  We spoke to Big Freedia in January, ahead of the show's release. Today, we listen back to that conversation.  This month marks 157 years since a deadly riot at the Mechanics Institute, when a mob of white former Confederates attacked a group of Black residents marching for their right to vote, resulting in nearly 50 deaths and over 100 injuries. And while the event, which has come to be known as the New Orleans Massacre, was undeniably tragic, many argue it shaped positive Reconstruction-era policies.  To remember this story, we bring you an episode of the Tripod Podcast, where NPR's Laine Kaplan-Levinson aims to uncover the truth about this event and explore the relevance today.  Content creator Joshua Darien started making videos on TikTok about Southern urban legends last summer. Since then, the Alabama native has amassed a loyal following. Today, we listen back to the Gulf States Newsroom's Taylor Washington's report on how he navigates telling otherworldly stories in the Bible belt.  Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Diane Mack. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our digital editor is Katelyn Umholtz. Our engineers are Garrett Pittman and Aubry Procell. Even before becoming Big Freedia, Freddie Ross was known around New Orleans. Her "signature call"—an operatic bellow that she lets out when I ask to hear it—was legendary in the city. "They'd be like, 'Oh that's Freddie in the club'.... The signature call comes very loud. And proud." Freedia came out to her mom as gay when she was 13, and soon came out to her classmates as well. She tells me she "had to do what every other gay kid had to do: fight for their life, and let people know that you are not no joke." She eventually started performing as part of New Orleans' queer bounce music scene, and became a local celebrity.  Then, in 2005, Freedia got shot. "What the motive was, I don't know to this day still," she says. After finally mustering the courage to start performing again, Freedia also moved into a new place, to get a fresh start. Hurricane Katrina hit about a week later. She and her family were together at her duplex during the storm, where the water rose to the second floor. They cut a hole in the roof to signal for help. Days after being evacuated, Freedia made her way to Houston, where she lived for two years.  In Houston, Freedia met her boyfriend, Devon. After years of dating men who weren't openly gay, Freedia says Devon's openness about their relationship has made a difference. "When your love grows for somebody and y'all get closer you wanna...feel more appreciated, and you wanna feel loved," she says. Freedia eventually returned to New Orleans, where her career continues to expand. “A lot was happening after Katrina. I mean money was slinging everywhere,” Freedia tells me. “You know everybody had FEMA checks, girl!” I talk with Freedia about what's happened in her life in the years since she returned to her hometown: publishing a memoir, starring in a reality TV series, and losing her beloved mother to cancer.  * This interview is from 2015 and part of a series about New Orleans on the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
