If the New Orleans demigod Professor Longhair had played guitar instead of piano and his voice had sounded like a cross between Lyle Lovett and Lowell George, he would have been a dead ringer for Greg Brice, my kitchen session guest in this podcast. This is the free-for-all version featuring the usual mix of Americana, Africana and all-round kicks in the earhole.

Welcome to a very special episode that is launching during the week of ‘Podcasthon'; the world's largest podcast charity initiative, bringing together podcasters worldwide to raise awareness of local non-profits charitable causes. And what's more timely and relevant right now, than delving into a discussion of behavioral health with an organization that has been servicing its clients for over 55 years. Founded in 1970, Buckelew Programs encompasses a combined 137 years of experience serving the North Bay, here in California. With programs in Marin, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino Counties, Buckelew's mission is to promote recovery, resilience and Hope (something we're big on in this podcast) by providing behavioral health and support services that enhance quality of life through their 5 Core Programs: Counseling, Service Navigation, Substance Use Recovery, Supported Housing, and Suicide Prevention. Buckelew is tirelessly working to destigmatize the value of mental health, in the services they provide to foster healthy people and communities. Chris Kughn is Buckelew's CEO, and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and has served at the helm of Buckelew since May of 2019 He has more than 20 years of experience in the public, private and, nonprofit behavioral healthcare systems. Prior to Buckelew, Chris served in several executive management roles in Solano County and the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, including Division Director of Adult and Older Adult Services. His passion and commitment to nonprofit behavioral health services began with his work serving adults, children, and families in juvenile justice, crisis stabilization and adult homeless systems. With a B.S. degree in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.A. degree in Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is a member of the California Association of Social Rehabilitation Agencies (CASRA). Chris tends to his own mental health through mountain biking, cycling, scuba diving, and a gift that I've had the pleasure of enjoying; a keen sense of humor. New Orleans has given the world all kinds of music. We refer to ourselves as the birthplace of jazz. We’re one of the principal breeding grounds of funk, bounce, and brass band music. And then there’s a style of piano playing that’s so identifiably from here it’s simply called, “New Orleans piano.” Generations of legendary New Orleans piano players became identified with the places they played. Fats Domino at the Dew Drop Inn. Professor Longhair at Tipitina’s. James Booker at The Maple Leaf. Today you can hear masters of New Orleans piano like Jon Cleary, Tom McDermott, Joe Krown, and others at clubs around town, like Chickie Wah Wah, The Bon Temps, and Buffa’s. Or, you can hear them at your place. You can have an A-list New Orleans piano player show up at your place - with a grand piano - and play your birthday party, wedding, or just a random Friday night, thanks to Jacques Ferland’s business, Piano On A Truck. Piano On A Truck is pretty much what it sounds like. It’s a grand piano on the back of a yellow, 1972 International pick-up truck. And it comes with, or without, a piano player. In our seemingly never-ending attempt to place order on a chaotic world, we like to categorize things into twos - either/or. Tall or short. Black or white. On the rocks or straight up. Today, for a lot of white-collar occupations, the either/or distinction is either working in the office or working from home. Well, like so many things in life, it turns out there’s a 3rd way. Billy Schell describes himself as CEO, owner and van driver of an apparel company called NOLA Shirts. NOLA Shirts designs and manufactures New Orleans themed Polo shirts, T-shirts, and hats, and sells them online or at various brick-and-mortar stores around New Orleans. The “van driver” in Billy’s job description is a reference to the company’s headquarters which are also Billy’s living quarters – a Mercedes Sprinter van that’s been his principal home and office since 2021. Around 5,525 years ago - it was probably a Thursday - in ancient Mesopotamia, the wheel was invented. To say it was a revolutionary invention is not just a bad pun, it’s also the understatement of several millennia. And just when you think every possible use of the wheel has already been thought of, along comes the 21st Century - and hashtag-van-life and Piano On A Truck, two New Orleans entrepreneurs discovering yet more places the revolutions of a wheel can take us. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. The abstract painter Mali Morris is fascinated by colour and light, and has been exploring their possibilities in her work for more than 50 years. She was born in Wales and studied at the University of Newcastle, where the Pop Art pioneer Richard Hamilton was one of her teachers. He brought her and fellow students news of New York which she says “seemed as far away to me as the moon”. Mali herself taught at a number of art schools including Chelsea, the Slade School and the Royal College of Art. She was elected a Royal Academician in 2010, and last year, flags made from her work hung above Bond Street, not far from the Academy, in a riot of joyous colour. She currently has a major exhibition at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham. Her musical choices include Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi and some blues singing and whistling by Professor Longhair.

So people open up, very quickly, and, very quickly, as a reader, you're not reading something you've read before.” The stories originally appeared in Rolling Stone, Downbeat, Esquire, New Musical Express, California magazine, Addicted To Noise, San Francisco Chronicle, Vibe, Creem, New York Rocker, and more.

Henry Roeland Byrd, better known as Professor Longhair, was one of the most beloved and influential pianists in New Orleans history. The exhibit, “Me Got Fiyo: The Professor Longhair Centennial” is on display at the Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge through August 6th. Louisiana State Museum Director Rodneyna Hart tells us more about Longhair's legacy. But first, back in June Walmart announced it will join a small number of states in covering doula services for pregnant employees in Louisiana. While not technically a medical professional, a doula is an expert at supporting expectant parents through the process of pregnancy, labor, and delivery. For more on doula services and why they are becoming more popular additions to healthcare plans, we spoke with Chandler Sampson, a certified doula with Birth Help LLC in Baton Rouge. After celebrating for 12 years straight and a record crowd of 100,000 in 1972, the town of Mansura took a little break. That all changed in 1987 when the Cochon de Lait festival was revived and Mansura has been never been the same again. We continue the tradition again this year. Thank you Jim Dudukovich! In this episode we talk about cool bands and stories, like how our guest sat in on drums with the Circle Jerks in New York because Chuck Biscuits, the drummer, wasn't able to play and our guest knew all their songs.Jack Rabid is the publisher and creative genius behind "The Big Takeover," a bi-annual music magazine published out of New York City, going on 42 years now. It reads like a music encyclopedia or mix tape guidebook, including 60-80 pages of album reviews written by Jack himself. Jack's a drummer and vocalist and has played in a number of bands. And he's a veteran of the “punk era,” emanating from New York City. But mostly, he's a music lover. This interview kicks right in, mid conversation, with us talking about Jack's softball game that he just got home from. I ended up just hitting record, 86'ing the formalities of a “hello,” and rolling tape. No one talks about music like Jack Rabid. Today, I'm joined by Texas blues singer and pianist Marcia Ball. Marcia plays her grand piano right here on the podcast, and it is nothing short of awesome, in fact it's probably the best performance we've ever had on the show. However, she's very humble throughout our discussion, meanwhile my jaw is on the ground in amazement at the talent this lady has. We talk about how she found her love for singing, the difficulties she faced during the pandemic, and what the future looks like for live music. We also talk about the relationship between Louisiana and Texas and the history behind Mardi Gras. And then she treats us with an amazing performance of her song "La Ti Da." Listen in and enjoy! “I've been lucky at every turn. Musically, personally, professionally, it's just been a gift to me. I feel like I have it all.” - Marcia Ball Time Stamps: 07:11 - How Marcia found her love for singing. 09:06 - The different genres she has played across her career. 12:23 - How she heard about Professor Longhair. 16:36 - The different shows she has lined up for the summer. 17:25 - The difficulties Marcia found being creative during the pandemic. 21:05 - Where Mardi Gras originated and what it's like in New Orleans. 23:40 - Marcia's favourite memories from Mardi Gras. 27:41 - Her emergency Gumbo recipe. 28:12 - The work Marcia does for the non-profit ‘home'. 30:26 - Combining food and music and what the two have in common. 34:44 - The different way you perceive time as you get older. 35:43 - The most regretful professional decision Marcia made. 38:47 - An exclusive live performance of "La Ti Da." 44:24 - What the future looks like for her. 45:19 - Notable influential women that Marcia has written songs about. In this week's episode, Mark, Barney and Jasper discuss the role music has played in expressing the pain and rage of Black Americans. Touching on such seminal figures as Nina Simone, Curtis Mayfield and the Last Poets, they listen to clips from a 1976 audio interview with the late Gil Scott-Heron, assessing his militant poetics and the albums he made with Brian Jackson. From there, the RBP team considers interviews with Public Enemy's Chuck D in 1992 and, from 2015, Kendrick Lamar. They also discuss a 1971 piece about James Brown by pioneering Black "rock critic" Vernon Gibbs. Mark talks us through such highlights of the week's new additions to the RBP library — Philip Elwood's live review of Judy Garland at San Carlos' Circle Star, Roy Carr's interview with New Orleans piano great Professor Longhair, Michael Goldberg's salute to New York electro-punk duo Suicide and David Toop's tribute to '60s pop Svengali Larry Parnes. Barney cites a timely 2011 interview with Harry Belafonte, wherein the singer-actor reflects on his civil-rights activism, after which Jasper wraps up matters by looking at pieces about the boundary-pushing Peaches, the return of Neneh Cherry and the bizarre artist known formerly as Terence Trent D'Arby. Hi! I'm Sally Young! Welcome to my podcast EVERYTHING NEW ORLEANS!Growing up in New Orleans was like no other experience on the planet. I always knew that there was no other place like it. As a teenager, I started working with the music that was the soundtrack of my youth. Professor Longhair, Earl King, Al Carnival Time Johnson. They became real people to me, not just voices I heard on records. I worked with a lot of Mardi Gras Indians, after seeing them on my way to my Nanaan's apartment on the corner of St. Charles & Jackson on Mardi Gras Day. Then I got to ride in the Zulu parade a couple of times, passing that same corner where I stood on the neutral ground since I was a little kid every Mardi Gras morning. My life revolved around the music, food, and community spirit of New Orleans. That became my SERVICE and ultimately, my JOY. EPISODE #323 Dr. Mary's Monkey Richard welcomes an author who discusses the murder of a world renowned cancer scientist, Lee Harvey Oswald, and the JFK assassination. GUEST: Ed Haslam spent his first 35 living in New Orleans. He personally heard and saw things that involved the investigation into the Kennedy Assassination, the murder of one of his father colleagues, and claims of biological weapons to be used for political purposes. For most of the 1970s he worked with the legendary piano-player Professor Longhair, considered by many to the one of the Founding Fathers of Rock-and-Roll for his contributions to the style in the 1940s. When Longhair died in 1980, Haslam got out of the music business to pursue a career in advertising. It was during this time that he stumbled upon hard evidence connecting people involved in the JFK assassination investigation to the medical community in New Orleans. He is the author of Dr. Mary's Monkey: How the Unsolved Murder of a Doctor, a Secret Laboratory in New Orleans, and Cancer-Causing Monkey Viruses Are Linked to Lee Harvey Oswald, the JFK Assassination, and Emerging Global Epidemics.
