Another mind bending podcast. In this we begin by talking about our recent appearance at Contact in the Desert. I did a guided meditation with a law enforcement person who reached out to me today to talk about something that occurred to him. He knew someone in the midst of the conflagration in downtown LA, and based on something we discussed at the convention, he did a meditation where he "asked his higher self to ask the higher selves of some of the rioters" to leave the scene. He was surprised to later hear that they had mysteriously shifted direction and wondered if it was possible to affect change with that kind of intent. Jennifer talked about the power of prayer, and I talked a bit about the effectiveness of meditation. Then we asked our moderator Luana Anders if anyone wanted to stop by; and Prince stopped by. We said happy birthday to him, and I asked if he was stopping by because of a recent musician who had left the planet. He said "no." I asked Luana if she was aware of who I was talking about even if Jennifer was not. She said she was. I started to say I had "heard this person's voice" in my kitchen yesterday saying "I'd be honored to be on your podcast." It was such a weird thing to hear, and since I've had a bad cold, I got emotional repeating the story. Apologies for getting choked up. Then Jennifer realized who this "Brian" was. Having been a music reviewer at Variety for some years I talked about a concert I'd reviewed, and am familiar with the documentaries (Frank Marshall's) about his life, and "Love and Mercy" with my Chicago pal John Cusack. I had many questions for Brian, including his mental issues, and he said they were related to the idea that he was "born without musical filters" and like some others we've interviewed, said "He was also hearing music since he was a child." (See the book TUNING INTO THE AFTERLIFE) I asked him if he had a message for our mutual friend Van Dyke Parks (whom I last saw at Sally Kellerman's funeral) and when I asked him who he was surprised to see on the flipside, it was a name we've heard many times in our group; Aretha. I asked Aretha about a story I heard Cynthia Erivo tell yesterday on the BBC about Aretha coming backstage to sing to her. It was interesting to hear Aretha downplay the event, since it was so meaningful to Cynthia. Also Brian said he had met many others, or was in the process of meeting people, including John Lennon (He'd met the Beatles, but said he and John weren't close) but pointed out that he'd just gotten home and there were a lot of people to see. I apologized for peppering him with questions, then tried to tell him about being in a grocery store yesterday in Santa Monica, told the staff he had passed (they all reacted) I shouted to the manager "Can you put on some Beach Boys in honor of Brian?" and he did. And everyone in the store began to sing. It make me think of getting a pick up truck with massive Marshall speakers and drive around the National Guard playing the Beach Boys which they would appreciate and love as well. The music makes people happy. Just another mind bending half hour at the office. Thank you Jennifer for your talents!

Grab your bug spray and your makeshift flamethrowers as NostalgiaCast braves Frank Marshall's ARACHNOPHOBIA for the latest '90s Bucket List episode, starring Jeff Daniels, John Goodman, and the late, great Julian Sands. Listen as Jonny and Darin discuss the movie's creepy-crawly Spielberg-ian touches, its perfect balance of comedy and scares, and lament how modern moviegoers try to "outsmart" the films they watch instead of engaging with the magic of them. Let's rock 'n' roll!

Ever watched a film that made you question your deepest fears? We certainly did as we revisited the 1990 horror-comedy gem "Arachnophobia." With the film's unexpected suspense and a gin cocktail in hand, we'll unravel how a seemingly innocent spider invasion could amplify our own fears of the eight-legged creatures. We share our first encounters with this classic, from the nerve-wracking moments that kept us on edge to the memorable quirks that left an indelible mark. Join us in reliving the thrill and charm that have helped "Arachnophobia" maintain its status as a beloved classic. But what makes "Arachnophobia" tick, aside from the obvious creepy-crawlies? We spotlight the film's iconic characters and hilarious one-liners that have aged like fine wine, even if some techniques haven't. From the stereotypical small-town sheriff to the amusing exchanges that still hit the comedic mark, we dissect the clichés that both entertain and perplex us. And of course, we can't forget the brilliant John Goodman, whose performance added a delightful twist to the movie's comedic undertone.Lastly, we pull back the curtain on some fascinating behind-the-scenes trivia that made "Arachnophobia" not just a frightful watch, but a masterpiece of creativity. From the humane treatment of the spider cast to the inventive filming techniques that brought them to life on screen, we explore the ambitious efforts that went into crafting this hybrid of horror and humor. And in a nostalgic nod to gaming history, we even touch on the quirky MS-DOS game that sprang from the film's success. So, if you're as fascinated by the art of arachnid antics as we are, tune in for a web of insights and laughter that will leave you itching for more.

They're here! Join BP, Coop and Justin as we analyse the iconic original Poltergeist movie. Poltergeist is a 1982 American supernatural horror film directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor from a story by Spielberg. It stars JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, and Beatrice Straight, and was produced by Spielberg and Frank Marshall. Plot Poltergeist focuses on a suburban family whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct their youngest daughter. In the years since its release, the film has been recognized as a horror classic. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, named by the Chicago Film Critics Association as the 20th-scariest film ever made. Steven Spielberg involvement Accounts differ as to the level of Spielberg's involvement, but it is clear that he was frequently on set during filming and exerted significant creative control. For that reason, some have said that Spielberg should be considered the film's co-director or even main director, though both Spielberg and Hooper have disputed this. Sequels and Remake The film was followed by Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Poltergeist III (1988), as well as a 2015 remake, but none had the critical success of the original. The Poltergeist Curse The Poltergeist franchise is believed by some to be cursed due to the premature deaths of several people associated with the film (including Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne), a notion that was the focus of an E! True Hollywood Story. Poltergeist was also featured on Season 1, episode 3 of Cursed Films. Popular Culture "Bad Dream House", the first segment of "Treehouse of Horror", the first episode of the annual The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials, is partly a parody of Poltergeist. Spice Girls pays homage to the film in their 1997 music video for the song "Too Much". The Family Guy episode "Petergeist", Peter Griffin discovers an Indian burial ground when he attempts to build a multiplex in a backyard. When he takes an Indian chief's skull, a poltergeist invades the Griffins' home. The episode used some of the same musical cues heard in the film and recreates several of its scenes. American Dad! also parodied the film with the season 10 episode "Poltergasm", in which the Smith house has become haunted by Francine's unsatisfied sex drive, and Roger plays Ruby Zeldastein, a parody of Tangina. The 2001 comedy horror film Scary Movie 2 parodies the movie's clown doll attack in Robbie's bedroom, as well as Diane's levitation. #poltergeist #theotherside #ghost #haunt #movie #horror #1982 #80shorror #carolanne #jobethwilliams #reverendkane #tangina #clown #familyguy #drawntogether #podcast #completeguidetohorror #stevenspielberg #screamqueens
In this special replay episode, we dive back into the chaotic, festive, and mischievous world of "Gremlins" (1984). Joined by special guest co-host Gerry D., we revisit this 80s classic that blends comedy, horror, and holiday spirit in a way only director Joe Dante can deliver. Gerry and I discuss first-time-watch memories, favorite scenes, and the timeless appeal of Gizmo and his unruly counterparts. We'll also uncover behind-the-scenes stories about the effects used for the Gremlins, the film's unexpected darker tones, and its legacy as a holiday favorite (or anti-holiday, depending on how you see it!). Whether you're a fan of Stripe's antics or love a good dose of 80s nostalgia, this episode is a must-listen! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: There are references to the crew's previous projects, including some Spielberg shout-outs on the Kingston Falls theater marquee (where early working titles for both "Close Encounters" and "E.T." are listed), a poster for Twilight Zone: The Movie (Spielberg and Dante's first collaboration), and a mention of Dr. Fantasy (the nickname of producer Frank Marshall). The scenes set at the trade show attended by Rand Petlzer (Hoyt Axton) feature brief appearances by Spielberg, composer Jerry Goldsmith, and Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet. Legendary animation director Chuck Jones even appears as Billy's artist friend in an early bar scene. Although it is not visible, "Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf", by Joe Dante, Sr. is on Billy's nightstand. Director Joe Dante, Jr. said his father criticized him for not making the title more visible. At the movie's end, Gizmo pops the window blind to expose Stripe to the sunlight. The original edit featured Gizmo lifting the shade, then Billy. Again, Spielberg suggested to Dante that the film show Gizmo to be more of the hero of the story than Billy. Dante agreed and the scene was edited to clearly show it was Gizmo that stopped Stripe. Model, Streamer, and Kingcast favorite guest Laura Lux makes her first appearance on The Spiel and she brings a hell of a title with her. This is our very first time talking about a movie that Spielberg produced, but didn't direct. That's right, it's 1990's Arachnophobia directed by Spielberg's longtime producer Frank Marshall and starring Jeff Daniels, John Goodman, and Julian Sands... and a shit-ton of spiders. Our guest is from Australia, so she's uniquely adept at discussing big-ass spiders, which we do. The conversation also covers our childhood thoughts on the movie vs. how we perceive it today, trying to lock down what exactly the "Amblin feel" is, plus some brainstorming on what other kinds of creatures would we want to avoid swarming our house.
“How do you not kill the guy on the toilet?” - Eric On the season 14 finale of We Hate Movies, the gang welcomes actor/comedian/podcaster/author/movie-lover and all-around good guy, Paul Scheer to the show to chat about the sleepy, yet kinda crazy monster movie, Arachnophobia! Why isn't this movie just about John Goodman's exterminator character? Why couldn't the major spider at the end be a huge, dumb puppet monster? How funny is it that this movie doesn't care about those kid characters at all? Why couldn't we see that dumb sheriff eat shit on-screen? Why would you uproot your whole family without being absolutely certain you have that job, Jeff Daniels? And you better believe we're marveling at all the Seinfeld alums in this! PLUS: Just watch Shatner in Kingdom of the Spiders instead of this. Arachnophobia stars Jeff Daniels, Harley Jane Kozak, Julian Sands, Stuart Pankin, Brian McNamara, Mark L. Taylor, Henry Jones, Peter Jason, James Handy, Roy Brocksmith, Kathy Kinney, Mary Carver, Frances Bay, and John Goodman as Delbert McClintok; directed by Frank Marshall. Filming a wrapped in Thailand, we've seen a lot of photos of infrastructure that could be serving the film or being in it. Filming now moving to Malta, where massive water tanks and a huge blue screen have been set up to seemingly film a lot of underwater scenes. There was a dinosaur list posted online, and the mosasaur is back, along with a few other aquatic animals, it seems like there's going to be a lot of this film take place on or under water. And lastly there's been a reveal of the movies sort of plot. “Three adults and three kids get stuck on THE ISLAND” this dosent tell us a lot, but I think a lot in the fandom are running with the idea we are returning to Nublar or sorna. Personally I think “the island” is the name of a facility or location and not one of the islands. I just hope we aren't bringing in the five deaths into this like evolution did. Scar joe, Gareth, everyone's saying how Jurassic park is a great film and they love it, no one's saying the lost world or Jp3, so I doubt sorna will be anywhere near this film. Also can we stop praising David keopps for writing it as the second coming. The man didn't stop working after the lost world, he wrote last years Indy 5 and some other questionable films as well. Yes he had some great dialogue in the Jurassic films but he was also responsible or writing some bad stuff as well. For the last two films by this time of production there's been a more detailed plot leak, while fallen kingdoms changed slightly, dominions was exactly what happened. This week we're joined by new Patreon John Malone and he's picked the cult classic from 1979, The Warriors. The Warriors was marked by its ambitious vision and the challenges of shooting on location in New York City. Directed by Walter Hill and based on Sol Yurick's 1965 novel of the same name, the film aimed to capture the gritty realism and heightened stylization of gang culture. Hill, known for his minimalist storytelling and action-oriented direction, worked closely with producers Lawrence Gordon and Frank Marshall to bring the story to life. The decision to shoot primarily at night in real NYC locations presented significant logistical challenges, including coordinating with local authorities, handling the city's unpredictable elements, and ensuring the safety of the cast and crew amid the backdrop of the late 1970s crime-ridden urban landscape. The film's cast, comprised mainly of unknown actors, added to the raw and authentic feel Hill sought. Michael Beck, James Remar, and Deborah Van Valkenburgh were among the ensemble who portrayed the titular gang members. The production faced numerous hurdles, including conflicts with actual local gangs and navigating the complex, nocturnal shoots that spanned several months. Despite these difficulties, the team managed to craft a visually striking and atmospheric film. The soundtrack, featuring a mix of rock and orchestral scores by Barry De Vorzon, further enhanced the film's dynamic and intense mood. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: New York City street gang, The Warriors, are framed for the murder of Cyrus, the charismatic leader of the city's most powerful gang, during a massive gang summit. With every gang in the city out for their blood, the Warriors must fight their way from the Bronx to their home turf in Coney Island. As they navigate the city's dangerous streets, they encounter various rival gangs, each with its own unique style and weapons, in a desperate bid for survival. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

Frank Marshall's old-fashioned jungle adventure Congo turned out to be a pretty solid hit back in the summer of 1995, and it still seems to have fans today, so how could it ever be overhated? Well, in this case it was those pesky film critics. (Like me, but that's not the point.) And maybe that goofball gorilla. Synopsis Arachnophobia is a movie about Ross, a doctor who moves with his family to a rural town to take over the practice of the town doctor. When a Venezuelan spider arrives in the town through extremely unlikely circumstances, Ross must unravel the mysterious deaths in the town as killer spiders ravish the community. The townsfolk are dropping like flies, and it seems like the only hope for this city is a ragtag team of spider experts/doctors/exterminators/interns. Will they overcome the eight-legged hoard? Or will they be consumed by the hellish nightmare that is the common house spider? Review of Arachnophobia Arachnophobia is directed by Frank Marshall from a screenplay written by Don Jakoby and Wesley Strick. Starring Jeff Daniels as Ross and John Goodman as the exterminator, this movie gives a goofy and fun story that scares me to no end. I couldn't get past a single scene without checking to see if there was a creepy crawly on my body. This movie is entertaining and enjoyable to watch, even for an arachnophobe like me. The story feels improbable, but not so far-fetched that the average spider hater won't feel incredibly uncomfortable in their own home for weeks after watching. Score 8/10

Frank Marshall's chance meeting with Peter Bogdanovich launched a career that led to him producing Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Jurassic Park movies, among many others, often in partnership with his wife Kathleen Kennedy. Now he's released a record album that returns him to the world his father Jack Marshall inhabited: a long-forgotten session featuring two gifted jazz trumpeters. Chet Baker and Jack Sheldon In Perfect Harmony: The Lost Album. It's a treat to hear, on CD or limited-edition vinyl from Jazz Detective. Leonard and Jessie loved mining Frank's memories of learning the film business from the ground up. Like many people of vast experience, he's excited about the next project—and the one after that. Yet he can still spin an Orson Welles anecdote with aplomb.

“Are you serving that ape a martini?”In the early 1990s, following the massive success of Jurassic Park, studios were eager to adapt more of Michael Crichton's popular novels to film. Congo had been published back in 1980 but no one had figured out how to bring the complicated story to the big screen. After the rights bounced around for years, Paramount finally secured them in 1994 and began fast-tracking production. Director Frank Marshall was fresh off hits like Alive and Arachnophobia when he signed on, along with an all-star cast including Laura Linney, Dylan Walsh, Ernie Hudson, and Tim Curry. But the difficult shoot on location in Africa plagued the production. Despite high hopes, the film flopped critically when it was released in 1995, earning Marshall a Razzie nomination for Worst Director. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the 1995 Golden Raspberry Awards Worst Director Nominees series with a conversation about Marshall's 1995 film Congo. Here's a hint at what we talk about. In this lively discussion, we dig into the pre-production and challenges behind adapting Michael Crichton's 1980 novel to the big screen in 1995. We discuss the all-star cast and debate whether the directing, acting, or weak script led to poor character development and lack of chemistry. We also analyze the cultural portrayal and exploitation of Africa in cinema at the time. Here are a few other points in our discussion:Weak CGI and special effects that don't hold up todayThe silly conceit of the genetically engineered “bad gorillas”Confusion over who the true protagonist isEnjoyable moments from Ernie Hudson and Tim CurryThough we have some fun unpacking this Razzie-nominated film, we ultimately agree Congo fails to come together as an entertaining adventure. The story loses Crichton's scientific edge and thought-provoking commentary on technology in the adaptation. We still have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. This week sees the return (for, sadly, the final time) of everyone's favourite adventurer, Henry Jones Jr., in Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny, and along with Harrison Ford and John Williams, producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall have been with Indy every step of the way from Raiders Of The Lost Ark (the movie on which they met, setting them on the path to getting married). And in this week's Empire Podcast, they sit down with Chris Hewitt for an extended chat that touches upon every single Indy movie. Yes, even that one. Then, in the podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer, while Eddie Hamilton, editor of Top Gun: Maverick and the upcoming Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, slides back into the fourth chair for a fun episode in which they discuss Eddie's experiences at the Oscars, James and Chris' experience at the equally prestigious PPA Awards, the order in which they will see Barbie and Oppenheimer, their favourite non-franchise Harrison Ford film, movie news including the casting of the new Superman and Lois Lane, and review Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny. Oh, and Chris grills Helen over her experiences at Glastonbury. It's a cracker of an episode, folks. It belongs in a museum. Enjoy.
