Send us a textScott Johnson primarily lives in Boulder with his wife and two kids, but the family also owns a house in New Orleans, located on North Rampart Street. Over a decade ago, he played a gig and mentioned that he would have loved to learn how to play the sousaphone, as at the time he played upright and electric bass. A trumpet player and friend playing the gig with him said that he would help Johnson learn the ropes. This motivated Johnson to teach himself the instrument, and feeling comfortable playing New Orleans jazz, he gathered friends of his to form a band to play that jazz: the Rampart Street Stompers, a name that tributes his house. The band focuses on traditional New Orleans jazz from the 1920s and '30s, from Louis Armstrong to Louis Prima, and the lineup has changed slightly over the years to home in on that particular sound. The current lineup consists of Johnson as band leader, sousaphone player, and vocalist; Fred Renken on trumpet; Fred Rollenhagen on trombone; Michael Bocim on clarinet; Al Scholl on banjo and guitar; Steve Balgooyen on drums; and Corinne Johnson, Scott's daughter, as a vocalist. Other members have included Josh Schnabel on banjo and ukulele, Ellie Brown on vocals, and Justin Peterson on trumpet. Johnson calls the band a middle ground between Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Tuba Skinny, the latter of whom Johnson credits with inspiring the band in the first place. Also, stay tuned to hear responses from Al Jardine of The Beach Boys to questions about that band's time at Caribou Ranch in Nederland! On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I had the honor of chatting with the incredible Stanton Moore. Stanton Moore is a GRAMMY award-winning artist, teacher, and performer. Born and raised in New Orleans, he is a dedicated drummer, performer, and educator who is especially connected to the city, its culture, and its collaborative spirit. In the early ‘90s, Moore helped found the New Orleans-based essential funk band Galactic, which continues to amass a worldwide audience via recording and touring globally. Moore launched his solo career in 1998 and has nine records under his own name, with the most recent being "With You In Mind: The Songs of Allen Toussaint." Throughout his 25-year career, Moore has played and/or recorded with a diverse group of artists, including Maceo Parker, Joss Stone, Irma Thomas, Leo Nocentelli and George Porter (of the Meters), Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine), Corrosion of Conformity, Donald Harrison Jr., Nicholas Payton, Trombone Shorty, Skerik, Charlie Hunter, Robert Walter, Will Bernard, Ivan Neville, Anders Osborne, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. He has also made numerous appearances on the Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O'Brien, and Seth Meyers late-night TV shows. With a bachelor's degree in music and business from Loyola University, Moore stays involved in education by constantly presenting clinics and teaching master classes and private lessons worldwide. He has released two books and three video projects. His book "Groove Alchemy" was picked by Modern Drummer as one of the top 25 instructional drum books of all time. To continue his passion for teaching and become more closely connected with his students, he recently launched his own online drum academy, StantonMooreDrumAcademy.com. On a personal note, my son, Skyler, was able to study drumset with Stanton while he was artist-in-residence at Louisiana State University. I encourage you to check out Stanton's music and schedule at stantonmoore.com.Thank you for listening! The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
One of the most infamous episodes in the history of SNL is this summer entry of season 1. In order to make sense of it all Brad and Gary are joined by SNLinReview's Andy Hoglund!Host Louise Lasser takes the show to a place rarely seen in an episode that is VERY meta. Fresh off the success of her own show, Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, Lasser brings her unique style of comedy and storytelling to Saturday Night. The lines between reality and fiction are blurred as not only Lasser's real-life drama is brought to the screen but also a recent Rolling Stone article that leads to some tension among the cast, especially Chevy Chase and John Belushi. It's an interesting episode (to say the least) that also includes a number by New Orleans' own Preservation Hall Jazz Band.Subscribe today! And follow us on social media on X (Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook.
It's a bonus episode! Here's a little radio piece I made back in January to promote a Blind Boys of Alabama concert here in Olympia. The gospel singing group has been in existence since 1939 or so, with its members changing over time... you know, like Menudo, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band or the London Philharmonic. I spoke with Ricky McKinnie, who's been in the group since 1989. He tells me about his background in gospel music, his own experience of blindness, the group's latest Grammy nomination, and the ins and outs of a group that has been evolving for over three quarters of a century. Short and sweet, hope you like it!

Karl has been rocking the saxophone for decades with his unique brand of funk, soul, jazz and blues in his various incarnations -- Tiny Universe and The Greyboy Allstars -- as well as lending his musical genius on tour with The Rolling Stones since 2015. Apart from his musical endeavors, Karl is a true Renaissance Man, contemplating many unique forms of artistic expression including writing a TV screenplay based on String Theory, the notion that all things are connected down to a molecular level. This type of ground-up thinking is just one of the many aspects that endears Karl to his legion of dedicated fans. But Karl also operates from a standpoint of extreme gratitude and grace, punctuated by his outspoken nature regarding his sharp socio-political points of view. He is truly a unique human and artist and we are honored to have him on the show. So hop aboard the Roadcase bus learn more from this elder-statesman of funk, Karl Denson.
