Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions with Jason P. Woodbury. This week on the show, we welcome Nashville-based music journalist, critic and author Erin Osmon, to discuss her tremendous book, Won't Back Down: Heartland Rock and the Fight for America, which chronicles how heartland rock, typified by artists like Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, and more, brought a populist, Americana-inspired sound to the airwaves of the radio and MTV. Along the way, Osmon shines a light on lesser heralded artists in the heartland canon, including Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, and Tracy Chapman, explores the impact of the shift from vinyl and tape to compact discs, the ubiquity of synthesizer technology, and the progressive undercurrent that propels this music.  Osmon's writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, and the New York Times, and she's the author of a 33 ⅓ book on John Prine and Jason Molina: Riding with the Ghost. With Won't Back Down, she traces the origins of heartland rock and its influence on artists like The War on Drugs and The Hold Steady, and best of all, offers deep insight into the complex characters of its most notable figures. Especially intriguing is the Indiana-born Osmon's focus on fellow Hoosier John “Cougar” Mellencamp, who emerges as one of the most fascinating characters, a hothead with a leftist heart and punk rock verve.  This year marks the 250th birthday of America, and this conversation was taped this conversation just a few days before the 4th of July. We haven't been feeling all that patriotic—maybe it has something to do with the fascists governing our country and their endless commitment to foreign wars and environmental destruction—but Osmon's book reminds us that this country has at its core something more noble, some promise that has not been stamped out just yet. As the Boss once sang: “Everything dies, baby, that's a fact/But maybe everything that dies someday comes back.”  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The hype has faded... Now comes the big question. After months of relentless selling, many space stocks have fallen sharply from their highs. The excitement surrounding commercial space, satellite communications, launch providers, and the blockbuster SpaceX IPO has cooled dramatically, leaving investors wondering: Is this the buying opportunity everyone's been waiting for... or is there still more downside ahead? In today's episode, we answer a viewer question by taking a deep dive into the space sector and separating the companies with real long-term potential from those that may have simply ridden the hype train too far. We'll discuss: Why space stocks have sold off so aggressively Whether valuations are finally becoming attractive How SpaceX's public debut has changed the competitive landscape Which factors could drive the sector's next major move How I would approach investing in the space economy today Because great industries don't always produce great investments... Price still matters. We'll also update the TraderMerlin trade sheet with a new position in the DRAM sector, discussing why memory chips have become one of the hottest areas of the semiconductor market. With AI demand exploding and data centers requiring enormous amounts of high-bandwidth memory, is this the beginning of another major opportunity? I'll break down: Why I'm looking at DRAM now The technical setup behind the trade My risk management plan What would invalidate the trade As always, we'll wrap up with today's market action and the key themes I'm watching as we head into the next trading session. Robert Cwiklik, guest author, explains that the ultimate turning point came when Grant decided to back down from Sheridan's aggressive mission. As the news reached New Orleans, telegraph operators shouted, "Grant backs down," a moment celebrated by the White League as a definitive victory. Although Republicans attempted to pass new enforcement legislation, the effort was stalled by Democrats who took control of the House in March 1875. Grant later confessed to Black official John R. Lynch that his decision to refrain from sending more troops—particularly to help Mississippi Republicans—was motivated by political survival in the North. Specifically, he feared that aggressive military action in the South would alienate voters in Ohio's state elections, potentially ruining the political future of Rutherford B. Hayes. By prioritizing Northern electoral success over the protection of Southern Black citizens, Granteffectively signaled the end of the Civil War's "fruits of victory," allowing the South to re-establish white supremacy through segregation and terror for the next century. Yet months later, many of those ambitions appear unrealised. We examine whether the war has damaged perceptions of American power, strengthened Iran's position, and exposed the limits of Israeli influence despite its military campaign. We also explore the growing independence of regional powers such as Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, both of which resisted pressure to join a wider confrontation. Has a new regional order begun to emerge? The conversation turns to Syria, where Ahmed al-Sharaa faces mounting pressure to navigate a volatile geopolitical landscape while prioritising stability and reconstruction. We discuss whether Damascus can avoid being drawn into future conflicts and what role Syria may play in the region's future. We also examine the continuing tensions between Türkiye and Israel, the state of the Saudi-UAE rivalry, Mohammed bin Salman's standing in the Muslim world, and whether new trade corridors and rail projects signal the revival of a long-lost vision of Muslim economic integration. Finally, we discuss reports of a potential multi-billion-dollar package involving Iran, including sanctions relief, infrastructure rebuilding, guaranteed loans and the unfreezing of assets, and what this could mean for the future of the region.Join us for a thought-provoking discussion and let us know your thoughts in the comments. You can find Sami Hamdi here:X: https://x.com/SALHACHIMIIG: https://www.instagram.com/salhachimi/Become a member here:https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/membershipOr give your one-off donation here:https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/donateListen to the audio version of the podcast:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7vXiAjVFnhNI3T9Gkw636aApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-thinking-muslim/id1471798762Purchase our Thinking Muslim mug: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/merchFind us on:X: https://x.com/thinking_muslimLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-thinking-muslim/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Thinking-Muslim-Podcast-105790781361490Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkingmuslimpodcast/Telegram: https://t.me/thinkingmuslimBlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/thinkingmuslim.bsky.socialThreads: https://www.threads.com/@thinkingmuslimpodcastFind Muhammad Jalal here:X: https://twitter.com/jalalaynInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jalalayns/Sign up to Muhammad Jalal's newsletter: https://jalalayn.substack.comWebsite Archive: https://www.thinkingmuslim.comDisclaimer:The views expressed in this video are those of the individual speaker(s) and do not represent the views of the host, producers, platform, or any affiliated organisation. On the afternoon of August 11, 2019, customers at a popular pub in Widnes watched as landlord Christian Thornton confronted a man he had recently barred from the premises. For Chris, it was part of the job. As the long-serving landlord of the Hammer and Pincers, he had spent years looking after customers, serving pints, organising charity events, and helping make his pub a cornerstone of the local community. But what began as a routine confrontation would end in a shocking act of violence that devastated his family and sent shockwaves through Cheshire and beyond.Known affectionately as "Tigger", Chris was a devoted husband to Pam, a father of three young children, and one of the most recognisable faces in Widnes. Friends described him as kind, funny and always willing to help others. Whether he was supporting local musicians, raising money for charity, serving a cold beer to regulars or cheering on his children's sporting achievements, Chris was a man who put people first. His murder left not only a grieving family, but an entire town struggling to come to terms with the loss of a man who meant so much to so many.In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we examine the murder of Christian Thornton, the events that led to his fatal confrontation with Lee Abbott, and the investigation that followed. We explore the background tensions between the two men, the warnings and threats made in the days before the attack, the police investigation, Abbott's arrest, trial and conviction for murder, and the remarkable community response that saw hundreds rally around Chris's family. We also look at the wider concerns surrounding knife crime, pub safety, and violence in Britain's towns and cities. This is the story of a respected pub landlord, a senseless act of violence, and a community determined that Christian "Tigger" Thornton would never be forgotten.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. The U.S. Can't Back Down: The Strait of Hormuz Closure Is Messier Than You Think with Michael Every

The Great Simplification with Nate Hagens

This episode was recorded Tuesday, June 9th, before the current 'deal' was floated. Given world events, we decided to post this episode immediately as a special release, and deal or not, this conversation is an excellent overview of the issues and stakes of this evolving situation. In a media environment constantly contradicting itself, with every side proclaiming the advantage for themselves, the reality of what's happening in the Middle East gets lost amidst the day-to-day headlines. But for analysts who have been monitoring the underlying trends of the geopolitical gameboard for years, the direction is clear: the conflict over the Strait of Hormuz will likely not fully resolve within the next few months. If we truly accept the consequences of this, how will our global economy – built on interconnected supply chains and cheap energy – adapt to a geopolitical order fracturing before our eyes?  In this episode, Nate is joined by Michael Every, Global Strategist at Rabobank, for an unflinching analysis of the Hormuz crisis and the fundamental principles pointing toward the Strait's closure for several more months. Michael walks through multiple scenarios – a TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out), NATO military action, Chinese intervention behind the scenes – and explains why none of them offer an easy exit. The conversation expands to explore what this crisis means for the future of global energy trade, the emergence of rival production blocs, the collapse of demand-side macroeconomics, and the surprising potential for a more equitable world to emerge from the chaos. If the Strait of Hormuz remains closed or mostly closed into September, which countries hit their breaking point first, and will the order in which they break fundamentally change the balance of geopolitical power? How does everyday life change when price signals stop working and access is defined by availability rather than cost? And if this crisis truly accelerates the fracturing of our hyper-connected, globalized world into polarized blocs of energy and production, how might the disruption, for better or worse, shake up nearly a century of the macroeconomic theory that has shaped every part of our lives?  (Conversation recorded on June 9th, 2026)   About Michael Every: Michael Every is a Global Strategist at Rabobank with over two decades of experience. He analyzes major financial developments and contributes to the bank's various economic research publications. Before Rabobank, he was a Director at Silk Road Associates in Bangkok, Senior Economist and Fixed Income Strategist at the Royal Bank of Canada in both London and Sydney, and an Economist for Dun & Bradstreet in London.   Show Notes and More   Watch this video episode on YouTube   Want to learn the broad overview of The Great Simplification in 30 minutes? A professional football player's decision to introduce the President of the United States at a rally sparked a heated debate, highlighting the complexities of cancel culture and the double standards that seem to apply to those on the left. Chris shares his thoughts on this issue, drawing parallels with the music industry and the recent controversy surrounding the America 250th anniversary celebration. Chris argues that the left seems to apply a double standard when it comes to criticizing those who don't align with their views. He points out that celebrities like Beyoncé and others have been praised for their support of certain politicians, but are now facing backlash for their association with the current President. Hello to you listening in Pristina, Kosovo! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. The things we take for granted, like a song we've heard over and over. I wondered: what's the story behind “I Won't Back Down” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers?  "I Won't Back Down" was born from sheer defiance after a targeted act of arson in May 1987 burned Tom Petty's Los Angeles home to the ground. Petty refused to move away. Instead, he rebuilt on the same plot of land and channeled his trauma into a song of defiance. The message of resilience in the face of adversity became a universal mantra for overcoming any struggle.     Maybe like me you've acted against your own better wisdom, saying 'yes' instead of 'no', going along to get along, or something else. You know what I'm talking about. Maybe like me you finally figured out a better way to live. We've got just one life. In a world that keeps pushing us around we stand our ground, we won't back down! Story Prompt: When have you backed down because someone or something was pushing you around? No more.  You know how to stand your ground! Write that story and share it out loud!   You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! PODCAST DESCRIPTION An explosive episode as Tara examines two major stories dominating conservative politics. First, the showdown in New Jersey over the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility. Federal officials insist the facility is operating legally and humanely, while activists and Democrat leaders continue demanding its closure. Tara explores claims that coordinated protests are being used to pressure federal authorities and potentially shut down immigration enforcement operations nationwide. Then, a political earthquake hits South Carolina. Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis publicly accuses Governor Henry McMaster and Lt. Governor Pam Evette of sacrificing a Republican congressional seat to secure political endorsements and advance personal ambitions. The allegations have ignited debate across the state just days before voters head to the polls. Congressman Ralph Norman joins the program to discuss President Trump's endorsement of Pam Evette, the governor's race, gambling expansion, government reform, and his vision for South Carolina's future. The show closes with a discussion of increasingly aggressive rhetoric from some media figures and political commentators calling for a political "purge" of Trump supporters and the Republican movement. Having already penned much-heralded books on both John Prine and Jason Molina, author Erin Osman is now tackling the wide genre of heartland rock — which she defines more by a spiritual and ideological geography, rather than a literal one. And while Bob Seger, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and John Mellancamp round out the Mount Rushmore of sorts for this soundtrack of working class 80's middle-America, Osmon casts a needed spotlight on the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Tracy Chapman, Lucinda Williams and Bruce Hornsby within the pages of 'Won't Back Down,' available now wherever you get literature. On this week's show, Osman expands upon the relationship between art and province, and why the subject matter of 'Won't Back Down' stretches across generations. Plus, details on her current role on the editorial staff of the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Nashville, and how her two decades as a music journalist have led her there. In the new book ‘Won't Back Down: Heartland Rock and the Fight for America,' music journalist Erin Osmon takes a closer look at the genre often seen as quintessentially American. Popularized by artists like Bruce Springsteen and Ton Petty, Heartland Rock has long told stories of labor, longing, and life on the margins. But Osmon argues that beneath those familiar themes lies a more complicated history one in which these songs had been used to express both solidarity and division.

In this special episode of Somewhere in the Skies, we pause to honor the life and legacy of one of the most influential voices in UFO research, Nick Pope, who passed away on April 6, 2026. A former UK Ministry of Defence official who once investigated UFO sightings for the government, Nick became a bridge between official inquiry and public curiosity. This episode is both a tribute and a time capsule. We revisit Ryan's on-location interview with Nick Pope and The Basement Office's Stephen Greenstreet in New York City, a conversation that captures Nick at his most candid, thoughtful, and intellectually sharp. From government secrecy and evolving UAP investigations to the ever-changing landscape of disclosure, Nick's perspective reminds us why his voice mattered so much. More than just a researcher, Nick was a colleague, a friend, and a steady presence in a rapidly shifting field. As we look back on this conversation, we also look forward, carrying on the questions he championed and the pursuit of truth he never abandoned. Rest in peace, Nick Pope. Naftali Bennett (Former Prime Minister of Israel) joins Chris Cuomo to explain how Israel sees its war with Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas — and why he believes stopping now would be more dangerous than continuing. Bennett argues that Iran's nuclear ambitions and regional proxy network left Israel with no real alternative but to act early, before the threat becomes unavoidable. He explains the difference between how Israel and the United States view Iran, why deterrence may not be enough, and what a realistic outcome of this conflict could look like. Cuomo presses Bennett on whether the strategy can actually succeed, what happens if the Iranian regime survives, and why Americans are increasingly skeptical of another prolonged conflict.
