In this episode, I sit down with pianist/vocalist Champian Fulton and saxophonist/clarinetist/composer Klas Lindquist to discuss their latest release, “At Home,” the concept for which began with an event held in a home owned by Turtle Bay Records founder Scott Asen, who suggested they actually record in in his living room.  Oklahoma native and New York based Champian Fulton is the daughter of trumpeter and flugel hornist Stephen Fulton. She began her career at the age of 10, performing for Jazz legend and family friend Clark Terry's 75th Birthday Party. A Jazz pianist and vocalist for more than 20 years, Champian has now released 19 albums as a leader and has performed in more than 25 countries, both in concert and on TV. She has been recognized with numerous awards, including Album of the Year in the NYC Jazz Record (2018, 2020, 2023) and Pianist and Vocalist of the Year (2019) by Hot House Magazine, among other prestigious accolades. A world-renowned ambassador of Jazz excellence, alto saxophonist, clarinetist and composer, Klas Lindquist, was born  in Göteborg, Sweden.  Klas is considered one of Sweden's most exciting Jazz musicians. He is the recipient of the “The Golden Sax” award, “The Alice Babs Award,” “The Stockholm Stads Kulturstipendium”, and the “Gavatin Foundation Prize for Jazz Music.” Recognized for his technical brilliance, imagination and style, Klas is in demand as a recording artist, and has appeared on over 40 albums as a featured soloist and five albums as a leader.  These two seasoned artists with impressive resumes are very fond of the duo format, which is what led them to develop their latest release. And this is where we start our conversation.

Greetings All You Young Jazz lovers! Brian Phoenix back again with another installement of Jazzism (a katzpheno mix).... one I am certain you are gonna dig the most! I entitled this episode "Work" for two reasons, one it is the title of a composition written by Thelonious Monk and included here on the podcast (performed by Chick Corea Trio), and because work is essential to life. Work gives us purpose and it sustains us. There is an inherient nobility in all forms of work. Work loses it's meaning only when the work being done is not done to the best ability of the worker. It loses its value when it is not properly compensated or valued by the end user (employer or customer). We all got work to do, my work is simple and is stated in my tagline - "Bringing You Nothing But The Best That The World Has To Offer In Jazz Music, This Is Jazzism" as well as in my mission statement "Rescuing Jazz Radio From The Blahs!" Good people, I love my job..... now if I could only get some monetary compensation for the work...that would be awesome. Enjoy the mix, Brian "Katzpheno" Phoenix featuring: Buster Williams - Where Giants Dwell (2018) Nicholas Payton - Levin's Lope (2021) Gregory Porter - Movin' (2013) Dave Holland Sextet - Pass It On (2008) Sonny Rollins - Clear-Cut Boogie (1998) Roy Ayers - Virgo Vibes (1967) Chick Corea Trio - Work (2013) Yellowjackets - An Informed Decision (2013) Cecile McLorin Salvant - The Underling (2015) Geri Allen - Baby, I Need Your Loving (2013) Herlin Riley - You Don't Know What Love Is (2019) Roberta Flack - Tenderly (1994)

Ben's bass playing has been a fixture in the bands of his generation's biggest torchbearers: Joel Ross, María Grand, Veronica Swift, and Immanuel Wilkins to name a few. Along with Vibraphonist Josh Strange and Drummer Charlie Schefft, the quartet toured in support of their respective 2023 releases, coming together to expand upon each other's work. James Gandolfini as Carl? 45:07 – Final Thoughts & Scores – How Catch Me If You Can holds up today. 46:44 – Next Challenge: Empire Strikes Back – The team gears up for next week's deep dive into one of the greatest Star Wars films. 47:09 – Where to Find Collateral Cinema & Collateral Gaming – Biweekly episodes, YouTube content, and where to support their work. Key Takeaways: Catch Me If You Can remains a fun, engaging film with impressive performances. Leonardo DiCaprio captures the youthful charm and desperation of Frank Abagnale Jr. Tom Hanks' Carl Hanratty is a perfect counterbalance and father figure to Frank. John Williams' jazz-infused score adds a unique and unexpected vibe to the film. The movie takes liberties with the real story, but they enhance the narrative. The chemistry between DiCaprio and Hanks makes this one of Spielberg's best character-driven films. Memorable Quotes: “This movie is fantastic. It's extremely watchable and just a blast.” – Frank “Frank Sr. and Carl both admire Frank Jr. but push him in completely different directions.” – Bo “John Williams' score here is like a smoky jazz club—it's intimate, fun, and unpredictable.” – Thomas “Watching this as a kid, I thought this was the life. Watching it now, it feels like anxiety overload!” – Robert Call to Action: Enjoyed the episode? Subscribe, leave a review, and share with your friends!
