Bleek Gilliam (Denzel Washington) is a hot-shot young trumpet player leading his own jazz quintet who loves the music and has a way with the ladies but can't figure out how to reconcile those two things.  He's also dating two women (Joie Lee, Cynda Williams) at the same time and can't commit to either of them.  He has also a manager (Spike Lee) who's a gambling addict and a saxophonist band-mate (Wesley Snipes) who has developed a rivalry with him.  So where does he go from here?  In this sprawling romantic musical drama, we follow his complicated story and hear a lot of great music along the way!  This was Oscar-Winner director Spike Lee's immediate follow-up to Do the Right Thing and even though it was a pretty unconventional choice to come right after such a seminal film, its reputation has only grown over the past thirty-five years thanks to several sterling peformances from its leads along with a stacked supporting cast including Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, NIcholas Turturro, Ruben Blades, Samuel L. Jackson, and the late, great Robin Harris in his last live action on-screen role. Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

AGT, CNN, The ViewLots of Great Stuff Happening for Landau, International Travel, New Music, Family & Fatherhood! Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. first burst onto the national conscience as the Sinatra-and-Soul singing  on NBC TV's “America's Got Talent with his incredible voice, undeniable charisma and unparalleled showmanship.  And a decade later, he's still going strong.Seeing Landau in concert is a revelation; backed by the dynamic Landau Big Band, you'll always hear swinging arrangements of Great American Songbook classics from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat ‘King' Cole and many more, along with a dusting of that special Motown Magic that is sure to move your feet and make you sing along. And after the show, every show, you'll always have the opportunity to meet Landau one-on-one for photos and have the chance to talk with him about his incredible rags-to-riches story.  “It's my favorite part of the night; it's something we always do. Sometimes I'm the last one at the venue, talking to fans and friends. The janitor is waiting on me to lock up!”Landau was born into extreme poverty in the Appalachian coalfields of southern West Virginia. His parents split while he was in elementary school, and Landau was shipped off to Detroit in the middle of the night. He woke up in the Motor Cities notoriously gang and drug-riddled “7 Mile” neighborhood. Landau likes to say that he went from Almost Heaven to Little Baghdad overnight!“I loved to play basketball in Detroit, and these guys were good. Some of them went onto the NBA. But we were in the hood; it wasn't anything to see guns drawn on the court after the game, so to keep people cool and laughing, when I'd dunk on someone, I'd sing a Frank Sinatra song like “Fly Me To The Moon” and everyone would laugh and put their guns away.”At the end of his rope, Landau tied a knot and pulled himself back up by auditioning for NBC TV's “America's Got Talent” with thousands of others. After months of competition, Landau emerged the winner, scoring a million dollars, a recording contract, and America's hearts, and he's never looked back.Landau's Columbia Records debut album “That's Life” reached number one on the Billboard Jazz Charts and was followed by “Christmas Made For Two”, “Landau” and his latest “Landau Live In Las Vegas” recorded during a performance at the legendary Caesar's Palace.  Landau has made dozens of TV appearances including “The Today Show”, “The View”, CNN, “Fox and Friends”, “The Talk”, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the Hollywood Christmas Parade. He's helped raise millions of dollars for charities, many in his home state of West Virginia where he serves on the Board of Directors for the Children's Home Society of West Virginia and was named “West Virginian of the Year” by the Governor's office and the state's largest newspaper.I Landau proudly released LANDAU LIVE IN LAS VEGAS a pre-pandemic recording at Caesars Palace that includes several never-before-released tracks. Enjoy Landau's unique take on the Great American Songbook as well as classic R&B, all backed by his long-time stellar musicians in LANDAU'S LITTLE BIG BAND, with guest background vocals by former Temptations and Four Tops lead singer Theo Peoples!© 2025 Building Abundant Success!!2025 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23bAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Join Ken Shuldman, author of Jazz Survivor: The Story of Louis Bannet, for a conversation about Bannet's life before, during and after the Holocaust and how jazz music saved his life. In conversation with jazz musician Joe Alterman, executive director of Neranenah.

Ahoy! Frizz and Bob hop aboard the smoothest ship on the sea and pour two fittingly fancy drinks - Frizz with a whisky of the waves, Johnnie Walker Swing, and Bob with Kavalan's Concertmaster Port Cask Finish. Grab your captain's hat as we set sail into the breezy, deceptively deep world of yacht rock, with its velvety vocals, jazzy chords, and more emotional vulnerability than you'd expect from a genre famous for boat shoes and white linen pants. Don't let the smooth grooves fool you. Behind the luxury lies a rich history of studio perfectionism, unexpected cultural crossover, and musical roots that run straight through the heart of Black American traditions. We rave about the underrated bangers, the comedians who coined the term “yacht rock,” and how this silky soft-rock sound found a strong second wind in the 21st century.

In this episode, I sit down with pianist/vocalist Champian Fulton and saxophonist/clarinetist/composer Klas Lindquist to discuss their latest release, “At Home,” the concept for which began with an event held in a home owned by Turtle Bay Records founder Scott Asen, who suggested they actually record in in his living room.  Oklahoma native and New York based Champian Fulton is the daughter of trumpeter and flugel hornist Stephen Fulton. She began her career at the age of 10, performing for Jazz legend and family friend Clark Terry's 75th Birthday Party. A Jazz pianist and vocalist for more than 20 years, Champian has now released 19 albums as a leader and has performed in more than 25 countries, both in concert and on TV. She has been recognized with numerous awards, including Album of the Year in the NYC Jazz Record (2018, 2020, 2023) and Pianist and Vocalist of the Year (2019) by Hot House Magazine, among other prestigious accolades. A world-renowned ambassador of Jazz excellence, alto saxophonist, clarinetist and composer, Klas Lindquist, was born  in Göteborg, Sweden.  Klas is considered one of Sweden's most exciting Jazz musicians. He is the recipient of the “The Golden Sax” award, “The Alice Babs Award,” “The Stockholm Stads Kulturstipendium”, and the “Gavatin Foundation Prize for Jazz Music.” Recognized for his technical brilliance, imagination and style, Klas is in demand as a recording artist, and has appeared on over 40 albums as a featured soloist and five albums as a leader.  These two seasoned artists with impressive resumes are very fond of the duo format, which is what led them to develop their latest release. And this is where we start our conversation.

Transport your ears to an afro-futuristic daydream as we dissect Herbie's funk-jazz era – and the cast of characters that helped push jazz records back onto the Pop charts. You'll hear stem breakdowns of Paul Jackson's brilliant bass grooves, the magic of Mike Clark's “Oakland sound” drums, and, of course, much geeking out over Herbie's mind-bending synth and electric keyboard experiments (excuse our stank-faces). From Fat Albert Rotunda (1969) through the slept-on Sunlight (1978), we ask: is this Herbie at his greatest?

Tune in as we pay tribute to the incomparable Roberta Flack, who we sadly lost last month. From her 1969 debut album First Take (featuring Open Studio artist Ron Carter on bass) to her iconic collaborations with Donny Hathaway – we dissect why what Flack didn't play was just as important as what she did. We'll explore how this classical piano prodigy, who entered Howard at 15 and didn't write her own songs, became the Quiet Storm Queen that influenced every soul, R&B, and jazz singer since. You'll hear why her understated yet commanding vocals and that classic 70s kick drum made “Killing Me Softly” a hit, grooving duets like “You've Got A Friend,” and deep cuts that redefined ballads. Join us to uncover the genius of Roberta Flack.
