Hip-Hop Artist, Lyricist, Producer and Activist Luna Clipse calls in to The Junk and Jam Hour - all the way from Bulgaria - to talk about his triumphant journey in music, which began when he was mentored by his grandfather, who happened to be an extraordinary big band jazz musician, yet was so much of a stern tutor, that it led Luna to discover his own unique way of how to compose music for himself. Challenged by his own mental illness, Luna opens up about his very first bipolar manic episode, that found him alone in a hotel room hearing voices and visions that specifically called upon him to stop a looming apocalypse - which led to a dramatic scene enough for him to be imprisoned at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility for the Criminally Insane - the largest mental institution in the U.S. Luna talks about how he quickly learned how to use rhyming - or clang association - as a means to communicate with his other inmates, a particular trait that those inflicted with psychotic phases of bipolar disorder share; and the importance of building relationships with his fellow inmates - all of whom had to survive constant physical, emotional and mental abuse at the hands of those who ran the institution. Luna talks about how he aggressively used his trauma and anger he harbored after his release in local rap battles, until Jerry Wonda - multi-Grammy Award winning producer for the Fugees, Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson - convinced him to not only use that pain more positively to create music with a purpose, but to also be a voice for all those affected by bipolar and other mental ailments. We also listen to and discuss his debut track entitled, 'Lunacy' - and Luna gifts us with a special, impromptu lyrical evocation of the experience of being driven mad, his life spinning out of control, and the trauma that ensued. He also talks about his important work to destigmatize mental health issues, and how he - along with his partnership with NAMI - are making the cause and topic of mental illness, 'sexy' enough to care and talk about, and blesses us with the track, 'Scalped Eagle', produced with Havoc of the infamous Mobb Deep. C.A.M.P (Calling All My People) is a rapper/singer/songwriter/musician who stands head and shoulders (and locks) above his peer group of today's hottest young stars. His creative juices eventually led him to the visual arts and ultimately led him to begin writing, performing, and recording songs.
Moe Betta has worked side by side with some of the worlds most talented Producers, Dj's, and Artists. Betta got his start when a co-worker introduced him the Legendary Heatmakerz out of the Bronx. During that experience he produced and co-produced artists such as Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb-Deep, Razor and also had featured material on the Dj Kay Slay Street Sweeper Volume 2 Album. Later on, creating countless material with Wyclef Jean and Jerry Wonda, Betta was able to display not only his ability to play the piano but also his ability to rhyme and ghost write for others. “A triple threat” is what Wyclef considered and titled Moe Betta. Betta has solidified he has what it takes to soar in this industry. Sky is the limit to all that you can achieve.
The Fugees were culturally unique in myriad ways. They were a trio comprised of one American-born Black woman and yet also two Haitian immigrants, who both took pride in their heritage. Naturally, this pride was weaved into the fabric of 1996's The Score, and the album's success meant that they were able to champion Haitian music in both America and abroad. In this episode, host Jill Hopkins speaks to the trio's family, friends, and fans about Haiti’s effect on the Fugees and the Fugees effect on Haiti, Haitians, and their fans who saw their own American immigrant and refugee experiences reflected back at them. Along for the journey are award-winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jon Batiste, producer Jerry Wonda, Ruffhouse Records co-founder Chris Schwartz, music journalists Dometi Pongo and Insanul Ahmed, and reggae legend Sly Dunbar. Together, they study the symbiosis between band and homeland as it pertains to the Fugees. Original music by Tony Piazza. Instead of returning to the studio with outside producers, the Fugees took their $150k advance from Ruffhouse Records and ventured off to … the basement. Specifically, the Booga Basement in East Orange, NJ, where Wyclef Jean’s uncle and his cousin Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis lived. Booga, along with The Dungeon in Atlanta (where OutKast cut their debut), were two of the most successful underground studios in the game circa the mid-90s. These locales came with a productive, family vibe and endless head bobs to judge the quality of work. In this episode, host Jill Hopkins speaks to producer Jerry Wonda about building a studio and a sound that would continue the tradition of great New Jersey hip-hop. They also discuss why this kind of DIY ethos is so important to groups in the process of defining their sounds. Also heading into the basement are special guests Chris Schwartz and Joe Nicolo of Ruffhouse Records, in addition to MTV’s Dometi Pongo and Genius executive editor Insanul Ahmed. In the Season 13 premiere, we’ll find out what it took for a group in its own artistic and personal transition to find their place at the top of the charts and on the Grammy stage as the biggest hip-hop act of 1996. Hip-hop had considerably changed from when the Fugees started recording their first album in 1992 to just three years later when they began working on their second effort. The “Golden Age'' was coming to a close, and the genre was at a crossroads. So were the Fugees, though. Coming off their critically and commercially divisive first album, 1994's Blunted on Reality, the New Jersey trio of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michel were similarly looking to reinvent themselves Join host Jill Hopkins as she dials the clock back to the mid-'90s alongside producer Jerry Wonda, Ruffhouse Records co-founders Chris Schwartz and Joe Nicolo, and rapper Psalm One. Jerry Wonda's discography reads like the Billboard chart: Since co-producing the Fugee's mega-hit album The Score, he's worked with artists including Carlos Santana, Mary J. Blige, Busta Rhymes, Miguel, Lupe Fiasco, Migos, Melissa Etheridge, DJ Khaled, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson, and many more. Oh, he also prooduced Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie," which is the biggest-selling record of the century. Music runs through this man. But as much as Jerry makes hits, it sounds like he cares more about the good he can do in the world, whether his philanthropic work with MusiCares, or his new message-driven spoken word project with Ras Baraka, the mayor of Newark, NJ. We join Jerry in his studio in Minnesota to talk about (and listen to) music, legacy, and leadership. We get a little glimpse into what it takes to stay at the top of the game for more than two decades. Dig it.
