What drives individuals to leave the Orthodox path, and how have modern influences like digital culture shaped this phenomenon? Rabbi David Aaron addresses these pressing questions and more, offering profound insights into the challenges and opportunities facing Orthodox Judaism today. This episode delves into the emotional and relational struggles families experience when a loved one chooses a different path, providing practical guidance for navigating these complex dynamics. Rabbi Aaron also explores how Orthodox communities can foster a more supportive and inclusive environment for those questioning their faith or lifestyle. We discuss the role of education in addressing doubts and encouraging open dialogue about God and Torah observance and examine how individuals and organizations can best support those transitioning away from or back into the Orthodox community. Finally, we reflect on the broader lessons to be learned from the "Off the Derekh" phenomenon, highlighting its implications for the evolving relationship between faith, community, and personal identity in the modern world. In a time when nearly every family is touched by these challenges, this conversation offers essential perspectives and practical solutions. --- • Bio: Rabbi Aaron received his rabbinic ordination for Yeshivat ITRI. Kicking off 2024, Cooper was nominated for 5x Country Music Alberta Awards, released his country-rock love anthem “She's My Religion” on February 9th, with a highly anticipated album coming later in 2024.  In 2023, Cooper was the most-nominated solo artist at the Country Music Alberta Awards, where he was named “Horizon Male Artist of The Year” and landed seven nominations, including, “Album of The Year” and “Fans' Choice”. Cooper's signature sound is identifiable by his thoughtful songwriting and gritty rock 'n roll vocals. Following this, Cooper received his first CCMA Nomination for “Creative Team of The Year” for his debut album Good Things, and was also named a semi-finalist in Sirius XM's Top of The Country.  Featuring down-home banjo and anthemic 1980s drum tones, Cooper blurs the line between country and rock 'n roll and is a taste of what's to come: Cooper does country music his way and doesn't apologize for it. How To Tap Into The Power of Love with Rabbi David Aaron

The You-est You™ Podcast

Meet Rabbi David Aaron Rabbi David Aaron is a spiritual teacher who has invested over 4 decades delving into life's BIGGEST question marks and sharing his life-changing wisdom and insights with adults and young adults. He has emerged as the ‘God expert'  simply because he has dared to ask and answer the most difficult questions that he/ALL people have and/or struggle with about God's existence and their own. And while the name ‘God' appears on the cover of almost all his books, he doesn't believe in ‘God' – not in the popular sense of that word, which leaves the Divine entirely misunderstood. Rabbi Aaron has authored several books, including Endless Light, Seeing G-d, Love is My Religion, The Secret Life of G-d, Inviting G-d In, Living a Joyous Life, and The God Powered Life.  His books have attracted national media attention, including Larry King Live and E! Entertainment. He lives in Jerusalem with his wife, Chana, and seven children.    The Meaning of Kabbalah Just like the Law of Attraction, Kabbalah is about the Law of Reception and the teachings that all good is here now and always. The problem is that we don't know how to get reception. Rabbi Aaron shares that we're like radios, and we have to engineer our life to be receptive to hearing God and Good. The most important things in life are not things. Experiencing love, peace, good, and God are always here and available to everyone. And remember, if you don't vibe with the word God, just substitute the word Good.    Endless Light Rabbi Aaron shared more deeply about the title of his book, Endless Light, and how we don't see light — light allows us to see. God is like the light that allows us to see what's there. God is a light, even though you can't see God. It's not about ‘seeing is believing', rather, it's about ‘believing is seeing'. Not seeing is actually believing. What's most important is to learn to live from the light of God and see opportunities to be of greater service. We're here to love and be of service to others.   The 4 Steps to Love Love, by definition, means you don't have to be worthy to receive it, although many of us get this backward. If you deserve love, it's not a gift – it's a payment. Love is a gift and is not a business model. What's happening is that we don't have clarity on what we're here to receive. The greatest gift is our presence and being able to truly and fully be there for and with others, be it our partner, family member, or friend. In truth, we're all made of love – that's why we're here. Love is about giving AND also receiving.    Rabbi Aaron shared what he calls the 4 ingredients of love: Create space for someone else and move yourself out of the center.  Respect and honor that the other person is not you and is different from you. Don't try to make them be like you.  To give of yourself to another person is giving your presence so they can be seen and heard. Allow your partner to do the same with you and allow space to receive love.    Remember that intimacy is ‘into-me-I-see'...it's about learning to be comfortable with receiving love.   A beautiful quote:  ‘We're all pieces of love.'   Accessing Your Personal Power All the personal power within you is not from you. You couldn't turn your heart off for 30 seconds because the power of your beating heart doesn't come from you. Tap into and connect with the power that is beating your heart. Get to know this power that is loving and guiding you. Meditating on your pulse is a great way to access your personal power and feel a deep connection to the miracle that is you. Feel your pulse with your finger. Notice how your pulse is happening without you giving it directions. Meditate on the marvel and mystery that every heartbeat is a gift because all of you is a gift.    How To Really Be Happy The way to true happiness is through loving yourself. When you love yourself, you're happier and are able to spread happiness to others. As Rabbi Aaron said, it's not the things that will bring you happiness. It's about being yourself, living your service, and expressing the happiness that comes from living a life that is about being of service to others.    Holy Selfishness Holy Selfishness is about knowing that we intrinsically need each other and that the aim is to be loving to others. Love is actually a good selfishness. The goal is to act from a place of wholeness and to focus on being holy, or ‘wholly,' as you are part of a greater whole. This is holy wholeness.  Love is a good selfishness because it means together we honor and acknowledge the shared one greater self. Kabbalah teaches that we're all emanating from one root self. Even though we are individual sparks of the Divine, we are also of one field of consciousness, one soul, and one self of the Universe.    As always, my friend, take what you like and leave the rest. I hope this conversation reminds you of your infinite goodness, your connection to an all-loving force, and that you're inherently worthy of real love, peace, and joy.       Looking To Help Others Know Who They Are and Design Their Best Life? There’s a deep, living tradition within our scriptures themselves. One that speaks to love and a transformation of heart and action, even if the text itself is sometimes weighed down by its characters’ bad habits and hurtful decisions. This is similar to the slow awakening of today’s modern acceptance of cultural and identity diversity, which corresponds to a reawakening of the heart of many of our major traditions in the minds of young and old alike. This spirit of Christ doesn’t accept the moneychangers in the temple, or the dominating Pharisees in society, and points out that “Christian” and “religious” count for more than we’ve cast onto them. Like Christ, these should point to love for everyone, deepening our understanding of reality, and opening our hearts to the diverse wellspring of God within and around us under many guises.Read more here: https://swedenborgiancommunity.org/blog/mountainOur community's affirming Swedenborgian spirituality, inspired by an interfaith, mystical Christianity, is centered on love and openness. The Transcendent Joy of the Holidays & Christmas

Christmas and the holidays are an interesting time of year because no matter how seemingly nonreligious we become in Western society, we still love celebrating it and getting festive! I think this is because no matter our beliefs, there’s something compelling about the joy of the season, about the joy that comes when families connect, when we dress and celebrate festively, when we collectively listen to songs and messages about communal love, joy, and hope, and when we take some time away from the hubbub of life, focus on giving to the oppressed and our loved ones, and rest a bit in (relative) peace. We like to forget, but this is the type of joyous living that God encourages us to find throughout our traditions and specifically in the Christian Bible, and so perhaps there’s a lesson for us in the holidays that we can carry forward through the rest of the year. Why Are There No More "Major" Miracles? Love

I find it interesting that despite the miracles found throughout holy texts, most of us don’t seem to see many miracles today (besides those “normal” ones of life itself!). If we look seriously at the spiritual insights that our scriptures try to present metaphorically (the reason why they’re often carried as communal parables), and particularly, at what kind of miracles these texts are trying to encourage, I think we might discover why there’s such a disparity! In short, I think it is the rootedness of miracles in love that helps explain what we might see as a lack of modern “major” miracles, similar to what the 18th-century interfaith-Christian mystic, Emanuel Swedenborg, proposed. There’s an empowering, interreligious message at the centre of our Moses tale today, and also one that is repeatedly uplifted by Jesus Christ in the gospels: “be still,” “accept peace,” “quiet your mind and know God.” Any practicing Buddhist or Christian Monk will tell you that this is at the heart of how Divine Awareness deeply advents into our minds, and yet, when we read scripture, we often miss this deep, central vein. Further, the concept of being still and tapping into our deeper, silent awareness, can often be misconstrued as being inactive (perhaps due to the seeming remoteness of monks!) where the opposite is the case; this inner stillness allows us to respond to the world with clarity, uplifting within and around us the Divine activities of compassion and social justice that are at the root of all life. God’s message of social justice, hope, and life sometimes gets watered down in our various understandings of the world’s scriptures, which is ironic since even the most esoteric sections of holy text point to the Divine’s mission of uplifting and empowering the entire world in spiritual health. One example, Daniel chapter 7 of the Hebrew and Christian Bibles, describes Daniel’s visions of beasts rising up and subjugating the earth in war and strife, but they’re eventually cast into a fiery river in front of the “Most High” who is the “Ancient of Days,” which then leads to “one like a son of humanity” to enter God’s presence and to rule over and empower all nations, releasing them from oppression. This story can be read on many levels, from the personal to Christ’s process of glorification during his earthly life, and as we break down its meaning I think we’ll all hope to not only embody its message ourselves but also as a diverse, interreligious society. In Canada this week we celebrate Remembrance Day on the 11th, when we remember our fallen soldiers as well as the deep risk our armed forces face every day. And I think that no matter our country, religion, or creed, we would do ourselves a service to remember that no matter our differences, there are many of us willing to sacrifice our lives for what we believe is the greater good. That’s partly why it’s so important for us as a global community to continue to empower sound and healthy decision-making, as well as a peaceful, altruistic approach to the world and our neighbors. It’s also why we have much to be thankful for when it comes to our martyrs and those that truly wish the best for us and are loyal to their higher ideas, even unto death – just like Christ and like Daniel in today’s reading. And ultimately, we’re told by tradition after tradition, this life isn’t the end – indeed, whether it’s the afterlife or reincarnation, we all will continue our journey toward eternity and so should strive for that higher idea of humanity today for the benefit of our eternal future. In the ancient Hebrew book of Daniel, we see a continuation of the universal spiritual teachings that this book uplifts – with King Nebuchadnezzar falling from his kingship due to his pride and arrogance. In all of our beauty and personal gifts it’s easy to fall into similar vanities, but our feelings of pride only serve to undermine these empowerments from Divinity – the seed of consciousness called by many names, and they lead to our own fall. But although being cast down may seem like a setback for the king (it does speak to his need for change) we’re shown that even this failure can be viewed from the light of God as a necessary lesson for the healing of Nebuchadnezzar’s soul. May we each look at our own setbacks similarly: accepting the invitation to renounce our pride, regaining our crowns. On today's episode of Gritty Founder, Kreig Kent talks with Lea Endres and Jim Gilliam about how they met and both decided to build NationBuilder. Lea and Jim also share advice on building a team and getting your first customers. Lea Endres is a co-founder and CEO of NationBuilder and the president of NationBuilder Stories. A writer, educator, and human rights advocate, Lea has spent the last two decades developing organizations, programs, and media designed to create conversations about and solutions to some of humanity's biggest challenges - from climate change to prison reform. Prior to NationBuilder, Lea served as the chief of staff for Green for All - an organization she helped found that is dedicated to building an inclusive green economy. She currently sits on the advisory board of Homeboy Recycling a Los Angeles-based social enterprise that is creating green jobs for people exiting California's correctional system. She is the co-author of Jim Gilliam's memoir, "The Internet is My Religion." Jim Gilliam is the founder of NationBuilder, the software platform for leaders. Previously, he co-founded Robert Greenwald's Brave New Films, building a non-profit grassroots media powerhouse of a million members. In the late 90's, he launched Business.com as its Chief Technology Officer, and worked at Lycos, one of the first internet search engines. Gilliam has produced four documentaries, and was honored in 2008 with Take Back America's second annual Maria Leavey Tribute Award. His speech at the Personal Democracy Forum in June 2011, The Internet is My Religion, has been viewed over 500,000 times and called "the best video on the internet." As many of you may already know, Jim Gilliam fought a long battle with cancer and made a number of truly miraculous recoveries. But late last year in November of 2018, Jim fought the battle with cancer once more. This time, an infection dramatically impacted his ability to recover, and he passed away on November 23, 2018. Jim was a brilliant mind and truly a gritty founder. We can learn a lot from him and I hope you can gain some of his wisdom from this amazing episode we recorded along with his cofounder Lea Endres. Some Questions Kreig Asks Lea & Jim: - What is NationBuilder? (11:37) - Did you face any problems in the process of building NationBuilder? (16:29) - What is the single most important ingredient a founder needs to have to be successful? (23:22) - What is your advice to future founders and leaders who are going to build organizations? (27:02) - Many companies struggle getting customers, can you tell us the story about how you got your first customer? (32:47) - What is some advice you would give to founders who are looking to get their first customers and generate revenue? (34:35) In This Episode, You Will Learn: - How Lea and Jim met (7:02) - How Jim started NationBuilder (7:29) - Why Lea decided to help build NationBuilder with Jim (10:15) - Advice on hiring and building a sales team (17:38) - The importance of devotion to the company, a deep desire to learn, and taking responsibility as a founder (23:30) - The value of building an audience in the early stages of starting your company (34:47) Connect with Lea Endres: Twitter NationBuilder Also Mentioned on This Show... Lea & Jim's favorite quotes: "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." ―Buckminster Fuller "In and through community lies the salvation of the world." ―M. Scott Peck "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is on a queer, divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others." ―Martha Graham Lea & Jim's book recommendations: Creativity, Inc. by Ed Catmull An Everyone Culture by Robert Kegan Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari

Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

My guest this week is Francis Stewart, Implicit Religion Research Fellow at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln. Francis was born just outside Belfast and we learn how she had to leave Northern Ireland in order to study World Religions. She moved to Scarborough where Theology and Religious Studies were taught at different campuses, and we discover the reason why she and her fellow students didn’t want to graduate at York Cathedral. Francis explains that she was drawn to Implicit Religion because of the fluid boundaries involved, and she talks about how in her research she has looked at how this is navigated via punk rock. Francis has written a wonderful book on this subject, called ‘Punk Rock is My Religion’, and in our interview she talks about her working class punk identity and considers the question of what she would consider to constitute ‘home’ and how her family have not always understood what ‘straight edge punk’ is. Francis’ earliest memories involve a record player and a fireplace and her grandmother singing along to Boney M, as well as the ‘ring of steel’ in Belfast and the blockade where one would be searched. We discuss what it was like to grow up in this environment, and about how religion is used as a political tool in Northern Ireland, and how when she moved to England she was still in the mindset of being searched in, e.g., shopping centres. Francis grew up below the poverty line but had an enjoyable childhood, albeit against the backdrop of bomb scares. Musically, Francis remembers the original vinyl of ‘War of the Worlds’ and remembers how she would jump up and down in her cot to Status Quo. She and her siblings would (literally) outplay each other’s music, and we learn that it was through John Peel that she originally got into punk music. We discuss the jingles that appeared in 1980s cartoons and how she remembers ‘Live Aid’ from when it was reported on ‘John Craven’s Newsround’. We learn how Francis entered academia and that she was the first person in her family and the estate where she lived to go to university, and how she didn’t know what a PhD was when she was first recommended to do one. She ended up studying under Andrew Hass (a former Nostalgia interviewee) in Stirling. Francis can remember the miners’ strike of the mid-1980s but reflects on how there was a lack of political engagement when she studied at university in the late 1990s. We talk about how more engaged students are now than they were in the past and the way activism has evolved over the years, and the conversation turns to the use of religion in superhero films. In the final part of the interview we learn that Francis’ memories are generally positive and that she is by nature an optimistic person. We discuss how people can find meaning in trauma and Francis wonders what would have happened if she had become a tattoo artist as she had once wanted to be. We find out what would have happened if Francis had been told at the age of 15 where she would be now and we discuss how Facebook tends to reconstruct the definition of friendships. Finally, we learn whether Francis is a looking back or a looking forward type of person and whether we do really need nostalgia. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Francis Stewart and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

Faithful & Fearless: Lesson 4/Days 9 and 10 Esther 3:7-15 While Haman and Ahasuerus are drinking it up, God’s people – actually all of Susa – are in confusion. Terror and fear are spreading across all of Persia. This evil edict schedules the genocide of the Jews and is being carried from province to province. Haman isn’t the first to make plans against God’s people. The situation may look terribly hopeless, but God is making a way. All through history men have plotted to kill the Jews. What’s interesting, is that while racism exists between all ethnicities and that racism may well show up in evil and destructive ways, annihilation is the repeated plot of evil people through time against the Jews – not just enslaving, or persecuting, or killing off – but total annihilation. Haman is just one tool in a long line that Satan has used since the beginning to cut off God’s people. Hitler didn’t just want to kill Jews, he set out to exterminate them. The situation may look terribly hopeless, but God is making a way   The former and current presidents of Iran (modern Persia) have literally called for its people to curse Israel and have vowed to exterminate all Jews and “wipe Israel off the map” (Ahmadinejad, president of Iran, 2005.) Isn’t this exactly how evil men behave? And yet, God’s unchanging word is clear: “The wicked plot against the righteous...but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.” We may not feel the panic of persecution today, but we need to. As throughout time, “Cast your burden on the Lord,” David wrote in Psalm 55, “and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” We may not feel the panic of persecution today, but we need to. We need to feel the burden, the fear, the desperation because God’s people – Jew and Christian alike –  are being persecuted* this very day around the world. We must not brush off the reality with apathy like King Ahasuerus did any more than we would personally plot do destroy God’s people. This is not to say that we live with that burden on us, not at all! We have to feel it, be aware of it, and faithfully give it to God who is ready to take our burdens. There is only one remedy, one relief, one redeemer for all of this, and that tale is even older than the Garden. It’s our Savior and God – Jesus the Messiah. The week I wrote this study over 100 Christians were slaughtered in their homes and churches in Nigeria. The week before that, hundreds more believers in China were killed, jailed, or punished for meeting as Christians. By the time you read this, thousands more will have been tortured, jailed, or killed. God’s people are targets for destruction. Persecution and plotting against God’s people is a tale as old as time. It’s as old as the Garden and Satan’s plot to overthrow Heaven itself. There is only one remedy, one relief, one redeemer for all of this and that tale is even older than the Garden. It’s our Savior and God – Jesus the Messiah. Although God’s name is never mentioned in Esther, he is present. Although God is not heard, he is speaking as He commands His angels to move on our behalf. God was moving and active – like his own Word – revealing the truth and preparing the way for salvation. In the midst of the confusion in Susa God was orchestrating all people and events so that His people would be saved. God is doing that today. He’s active in the world on behalf of the persecuted believers in Nigeria, China, and Syria. Our part is to be active as well not apathetic. Helen Keller said, “Science may have found a cure for most evils, but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all – the apathy of human beings.” (My Religion, p162) We cannot condemn Haman or any evil if we are not willing to confess the apathy in our own hearts. Confess that today. Repent and pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Pray for the hearts of all who love God and claim to follow Jesus Christ to truly love and follow Him faithfully and fearlessly. ~ Jennifer Richmond *https://www.opendoorsusa.org/christian-persecution/

How do you face down cancer? Get told you can't get life-saving organ transplants, and go about getting them anyway? And in the middle of that mental and physical storm, how do you find the thing that you and only you were meant to do -- and start building it? One person with answers is Jim Gilliam, the founder of NationBuilder, because that is what he had to do -- all of it. It's given Gilliam a clear philosophy on life, and on being a leader. And what he's learned along the way, he says, is something everyone can tap into. Gilliam first told his story in a break-the-Internet video, “The Internet is My Religion,” he's gone deeper with his recently published book of the same title. a16z's Ben Horowitz sat down with Gilliam on the occasion of his book launch, to hear more about his philosophy on life, religion, leadership and what we all can do to move this world forward. You are not alone, we all have these struggles, and Bible characters faced what you and I face. “It’s A New Day” and time for a fresh start with God in your life.

The Heart of the Matter - Dr. Darren Weissman

There is an inherent nature of love, compassion, kindness, and gratitude that each and everyone of us knows in our core. It is our nature is to be loved and be lovable. We began life with confidence, clarity, and a compassionate heart that was bathed in a mother's love and swaddled in our own innocence. Each and every emotion is love being expressed the best way it knows how. Love's energy creates movement. Movement is change. Change is the essence of life! Our intention for this Heart of the Matter Show is to learn and grow from the limiting beliefs that have perpetuated separation, misunderstanding, fear, and hatred for thousands of years. Join Dr. Darren as he leads you into the Heart of the Matter of Love is My Religion.

Michael A. Cremo Michael Cremo is an American freelance researcher who identifies himself as a Vedic creationist and argues that humans have lived on the earth for billions of years. Cremo argues for the existence of modern man on Earth as long ago as 30 to 40 million years ago. Cremo and Richard L. Thompson write Forbidden Archeology which quickly became a best selling underground classic, with over 200,000 copies sold and translations in more than 13 languages.   This massive work spawned waves of resistance and wonder amongst the scientific community, with over 900 pages of well-documented evidence suggesting that modern man did not evolve from ape man, but instead has co-existed with apes for millions of years! The first 108 persons to purchase Michael Cremo's latest book, MY SCIENCE, MY RELIGION will receive a free Bhagavad-Gita book (if they choose yes on the online order form) http://www.mcremo.com/order.htm
