It's a tale of two halves on Dad Bod Rap Pod this week. In the intro segment we take a look back at The Fugees' first album Blunted on Reality, released 30 years ago in the thick of one of hip-hop's best overall years, 1994. For now, let's charitably call it an uneven debut from a group still finding its voice. Please click play on the episode to hear a lot more of our thoughts. This album is full of baffling decisions, yelling, and very few cool moments. After the break, hosts Nate LeBlanc, Demone Carter and David Ma turn our frowns upside down and discuss some of our favorite underground hip-hop releases of 2024 thus far, kind of a halfway through the year check in. We have nuanced takes on and praise for Heems' album LAFANDAR, Mach-Hommy's brilliant RICHAXXHATIAN, and Schoolboy Q's occasionally floaty Blue Lips. Stephanie Preston (University of Michigan) returns to the show to talk about her latest research. Why do we hoard stuff? And how can we get people to care about the consequences of all that stuff on the environment? Her research has taken her from the strategies that some rats use to hide seeds (some hide in lots of small caches, while others hoard in a single location), to the cognitive/neural/emotional mechanisms of human beings with hoarding disorder. People tend to have emotional attachments to the stuff they own, and although most of us have more stuff than we need, for those with hoarding disorder it can be overwhelming. In other recent research, Stephanie and her colleagues found individual differences in how connected people felt to the environment -- impassive people were less likely to be concerned about the destructive effects on the environment, and that politically conservative people tended to be more impassive. Paper discussed: Bickel, L. A., & Preston, S. D. (2022). Environmental impassivity: Blunted emotionality undermines concern for the environment. Emotion. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.26.508896v1?rss=1 Authors: Parylak, S. L., Qiu, F., Linker, S. B., Gallina, I. S., Lim, C. K., Preciado, D., McDonald, A. H., Gage, F. H. Abstract: Immature dentate granule cells (DGCs) generated in the hippocampus during adulthood are believed to play a unique role in dentate gyrus function. Although immature DGCs have hyperexcitable membrane properties in vitro, the consequences of this hyperexcitability in vivo remain unclear. In particular, the relationship between experiences that activate the dentate gyrus, such as exploration of a novel environment (NE), and downstream molecular processes that modify dentate gyrus circuitry in response to cellular activation are unknown in this cell population. We first performed quantification of immediate early gene proteins in immature (5-week-old) and mature (13-week-old) DGCs from mice exposed to a NE. Paradoxically, we observed lower immediate early gene protein expression in hyperexcitable immature DGCs. We then isolated nuclei from active and inactive immature DGCs and performed single nuclei RNA-Sequencing. Compared to mature nuclei collected from the same animal, immature DGC nuclei showed less activity-induced transcriptional change, even though they were classified as active based on expression of ARC protein. These results demonstrate that the coupling of spatial exploration, cellular activation, and transcriptional change differs between immature and mature DGCs, with blunted activity-induced changes in immature cells. Had the pleasure of my Finnish friend Yari join me this week. Super excited to host the phonk shows first vinyl set I actually let Yari Open the show in honour of this and to switch things up. Anyone that knows me and the show knows I'm on CDJS or a controller but this guy pulled a clean hours set with nothing but vinyl. Some seriously impressive stuff coupled with a hard playlist. Yari has been relatively low key in the phonk scene but he's sitting on some hard tunes and is about to start applying the pressure. Follow my guy @xyungyarix. Im currently in the process of moving house and relocating city so they're maybe a gap in the frequency of shows while I get things in order but this is an exciting move for me. I'll now be in London and I will be hitting the gas not only with the show but a tonne of other exciting projects. I appreciate you sticking with my and your patience while I get myself moved. Whatever it is you do, producing, dj, designer, editor, keep applying the pressure. This is the best music in the world and we are the hardest genre and community in the world. YUNG YARI TRACKLIST 1. This week we bring another interview: Dr. Rachna Patel, Medical Marijuana Doctor. She's been in the Bay Area helping all kinds of people discover the benefits of MMJ. Using empirical science, and unafraid to reach out to her professional peers, she's a shining example of the future of medicine -accepting of cannabis! And she's dedicated to her craft, filling an area patients are desperate for, and many other doctors aren't willing to look into, despite their Hippocratic Oath. Sit back and find out what being a marijuana expert with a medical degree means, what it's like to be a medical doctor embracing cannabis, how it's affecting the medical industry and what she's doing to push this specialty into a more respected subfield. Hear from an ACTUAL DOCTOR about the science of cannabis, its applications and the most cut and dry way to approach this new area if you're feeling a bit trepidatious about trying cannabis for yourself. Dr. Patel is all about sharing good information, something we all advocate for around here at The Spliff Potcast. After the interview I get Blunted about some of the changes and bridges that need to be made between stoners and doctors. Then I dab some distillate! That's right, a buddy hooked me up with one of the hottest dab trends, the dablicator, just to hear what I thought. So toke in, and let's Spliff It! The holidays are upon us again, and the stress is piled higher than the presents. Not that you need a holiday to be stressed! A lot of people are going to be tempted to take a couple extra tokes this season, and that's ok! Don't let stigma help the stress kill you faster. Hassle and overindulgence mar the innocence of the eggnog, and you need more stress relief to compensate for that fact of life. But before I give you a pep talk to help you toke up, I have the usual long list of Stoner Moments. Don't worry it's not a list I check twice. I spent too much time being Blunted on the truth of CBD. But who can be too wound up with all these trees lit? Double Dream takes my problems as far away as the clouds, but leaves me clear headed enough to remember why I needed a bowl to begin with. Sounds like just what I needed this time of year. Thanks, to my Sativa Santa! Still reading? Well maybe you'll like my posts on Facebook Boh Nellis and The Spliff Potcast. Perhaps we keep it short? There's Twitter @spliffpotcast Not enough hashtags? How about Instagram @thespliffpotcast And just in case I set up a phone line so we can keep it real (209) 867-7543 Music by Kevin Macleod "Slow Burn" on freemusicarchive.org Find links and more cannabis info at thespliffpotcast.com
It's that time again: to take a break, think about our health, and have a salad. See? Weed salad. I catch up on some Stoner Moments, including getting more details on a story I had shared weeks ago about pain and THCA. I get Blunted about the DNC's inclusion of cannabis reform; feel that Bern. And I pepper the whole thing up with plenty of bong loads. The nice thing about smaller bowls is you get to take more of them! Taking a mental health break this week to just kind of hang out and catch up. Thanks for kickin it with me! Music by Kevin Macleod, "Slow Burn" found on Free Music Archive. Well, it finally happened, I got sick. But that's not gonna stop me from getting out a potcast! This week, pardon my froggy voice (my sexy sick voice was yesterday, sorry!) as we go over some Stoner Moments, get Blunted over Snoop's Golden Ticket Contest, and then introduce something different with a recording I have in the vault. The Experts Speak is a Florida based podcast that deals with many issues in the realms of mental and public health. I wondered what professional concerns their expert opinions might have about cannabis. Boy, was I disappointed! I take an excerpt from their July 1, 2015 episode to respond to some of the non-expert like things I listened to. These are popular arguments against legalization from many sides, but will they hold up? (spoiler alert! Not very likely)
