"Your favorite version of you is who you can be every single day. And that is what my biggest lesson is from making the film, working on the next film and doing all the things I've done. My absolute favorite version of Denise is the one that I get to be and the one that I choose to be every single day. And it's actually where all of the success lives as well. It's possible for you because it's possible for me. " - Denise Soler Cox Denise Soler Cox is an award-winning Latina filmmaker and cultural storyteller dedicated to helping people transform how we experience culture, identity, and what it means to belong. Denise talks about how a night out in Miami inspired her multi-year journey to create the film, Project Eñye, an exploration of first generation Latinx identity. Denise also shares about how she ‘pokes the beehive' on hot topics via her podcast: The Self-ish Latina. She also reveals her next film project, an idea inspired by the hidden and often painful stories of Latinas shared with her throughout her travels. Denise talks with Adela about the seeds in her life which started her 17-year journey to realizing the film, Project Eñye, a film about Latinx identity and belonging. Adela says the film will stand the test of time because the message still resonates today especially with the growing Latinx community in Georgia and throughout the South. Denise describes her experience living in Miami (and we count Florida as part of the South ;) where she embraced her Latinidad, and when she decided not to mispronounce her last name, Soler, ever again. They also talk about how representation matters in all walks of life. Her podcast, The Self-ish Latina, gives us all permission to take care of ourselves to get what we need to make us happy, even if it ‘pokes the beehive' of some community norms - if you dare listen to it. In her exploration of identity, she has discovered the Eñye experience of belonging is a universal one and can apply to many communities where people relocate across cultures and have families. Denise talks about her next film which encourages healing through the courageous sharing of painful stories. Connect with Denise on public speaking opportunities on belonging - she even offers a trade for Atlanta-based Spanx! Thanks for supporting Latina South podcast! "One of the things that I would say was very important for me to run [for US Congress] was because...the reality is that no one else is going to come tell me what that experience is like. It's one of those things that you really have to do, to really understand what it takes [and] what's necessary. One of the things that I learned is what I still need to do to potentially be successful the next time that I may run, or may quite frankly, do anything else. " - Brenda Lopez Romero In this second of two episodes, we welcome again Brenda Lopez Romero. In this part of the conversation, Brenda talks about the changing demographics in Georgia, her Latina identity including lingering issues within our own Latino community. She also reveals some critical lessons learned about what it takes to run for US Congress in Georgia - a recent process she says she could only learn from by trying it for herself. In case you missed it, be sure to listen to the first episode where Brenda shares about her early life and how it feels to be among the first and the few Latina-elected officials in Georgia. She also talks about what we can do to offer young people exposure to the places where decisions are made - helping to build experience in the future leaders of our community. "As young people, your job right now is to put in a lot of work. And for me, I see that as the investment. You have to invest in yourself first, by putting in the work and by doing the best job that you can. And when you're young...you don't have to sleep." - Brenda Lopez Romero.............In the first of two parts of this Episode, we talk with powerhouse Latina, Brenda Lopez Romero. "Being from the South and being Latina, at least my experience and in my journey...I felt like they were working against each other. And back to that feeling of 'Ni de Aquí o Ni de Alla,' as I look back I see so much complexity in that story." - Elaine Utin Elaine talks about growing up in the South between a pecan and peach orchard. Born in Peru, she describes spending her formative years in faith-based communities influenced by her father while also visiting Peru and experiencing food, music, and language from her mother and grandmother. She talks about using the two sides of her brain when describing the two sides of her identity. She eventually realizes the complexity of her identity in her experience as a first-generation college student and in her college years. She begins to unpack the many layers of her experiences in the development of her work with the Latinx community. Elaine talks about LatinxEd and how her lived experience of being a learner in the South influenced her approach to creating the South Carolina nonprofit organization which serves youth in the Latinx community. Adela asks Elaine, “What does your support structure look like?” Elaine talks about the challenges of being an entrepreneur while being a Mom and using coaching as a tool to help her with mindset and personal growth. She also talks about democratizing coaching for Latinx youth through the program Somos Carolina. We can support Elaine and her work by visiting LatinxEd.org and learn more about impactful programs like College y Consejos and Somos Carolina. “My words are specifically to the Latinas of the South: Your voice is so important, needed, of value, beautiful. You have a style and an energy that this world needs more of.” – Stefanie Diaz Stefanie talks about her personal and family journey to claiming her Latina identity, growing up in Georgia and feeling between two worlds. She describes going back to Puerto Rico and feeling as if she’s leaving a part of her heart behind when she leaves the island. She also talks about finding her tribe later in life. Stefanie tells us what led to her work with Zane Venture Fund and her podcast, She Conquers Capital. Letting go of fear and going after her dreams with intention was an approach inspired by her son. One thing we can do to overcome the fears of ‘not being ready’ or imposter syndrome is to flip the script and instead congratulate ourselves for being in a place where we are about to grow and develop. Adela and Stefanie talk about how she is helping to make the venture capital world more welcoming. One way is how she uses her podcast platform, She Conquers Capital, to educate all about the world of capital while elevating the voices of underrepresented founders. Her advice: go to where you are celebrated and know your own value all while challenging yourself to come out of your safe zone. Stephanie talks more about the inspiration behind creating the WOE (The Women Only Experience) for female founders. She leaves some words of wisdom for the Latinas of the South – our voices are both important and needed. Thank you for listening to Latina South! Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine
Today my guest is Divinity Roxx. She’s probably best known for playing in Beyoncé’s band—and you’ve probably seen one of those concert videos—and before that she played in Victor Wooten’s band for 5 years and has also played with such artists as Jay-Z, nona Hendryx, Will.I.AM, Erykah Badu, Patti Labelle, Ledisi, and Gladys Knight. She also has a solo project which is a combination of funk-hip hop-and rock.I talked to Divinity on June 4th and we cover all kinds of stuff. I really enjoyed our conversation and here’s how that went.
JUNO wears many hats in her music career, and in this episode of the podcast we dive into how she got her start in music, her experiences touring the world with amazing musicians, her album Help Is Not on the Way, and JUNO's Guitar School. We have a great discussion about the Black Lives Matter movement, how important it is for everyone to educate themselves, and how JUNO uses her voice and her guitar school to create positive opportunities, to bridge the gap with mentorships and community. JUNO has some incredible stories to tell with an empowering message, so be sure to listen to this episode from start to finish. And be sure to give her album Help Is Not on the Way a listen! Quotes that Stood Out:“I think a lot more women need to step up and own their music and learn the instrument, learn how to use logic and Pro Tools, learn how to edit yourself. You know what I'm saying? Because we don't need all the stuff we have. And I think that's what the quarantine has really taught us.”“You know, but telling a story, to me is the most important part of my music, because I feel like everything else is just making noise. But when I'm telling a story, I feel like I'm leaving something behind that's valuable.”“Playing for celebrities has been awesome. But it's not the most valuable thing I've done. And I always tell people that because it's important. Your goal if you can be whatever you want to be right in your community that will expand and grow.”“It's not about me, and that's the point. If everyone can say that, “it's not about me” it's about the whole. And if we can all get on...how can we be on the same level? And to me, that's what the Black Lives Matter music is about.”“You can't really change someone else. But you can be an example of what change looks like. And I think that's the most effective thing that we can do.” Resources:There's No Traffic on the Extra Mile by Rickey MinorHow Martin Luther King Jr. Changed the World Black Female Writers/Producers to check out:Kim Burse https://www.instagram.com/kaybismee/Micki Miller https://mickimillermusic.comBibi Bourellyhttps://www.instagram.com/bibibourelly/Venzella Joy https://www.instagram.com/joythedrummer/Victoria Monet https://www.instagram.com/victoriamonet/Divinity Roxx https://www.instagram.com/diviroxx/ Where to find JUNO:Instagram: @juno_theartistFacebook: @junotheartistmusicYouTube: JUNOtheArtist To become a sponsor for JUNO's Guitar Bootcamp: Email: junosguitarbootcamp[at]gmail.com

She got her start playing with bass wiz Victor Wooten, and has established quite a solo career for herself: Not many people can rap and play bass at the same time! She began her musical journey with a clarinet, and is on the eve of furthering her education with Berklee Online. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
In today's podcast we're talking to the bass-playing rapper from Atlanta, Divinity Roxx. Few faces are as instantly recognisable within the bass world as Divinity Roxx. The same is definitely true of her playing. Brought up on a diet of Earth, Wind & Fire and Slick Rick, Divinity toured with Victor Wooten for five years, and can be heard on Victor's 2001 album ‘Live In America.' Taking to the road once more with powerhouse diva, Beyoncé Knowles, Divinity joined an A-list of musicians who, calling themselves Suga Mama, recorded on Beyoncé's 2006 album ‘B'Day' and toured her 2008 release ‘I Am…Sasha Fierce.'

Welcome to another edition of Po Politickin. In this episode, we politick with Atlanta artist Divinity Roxx. In 2006, Divinity joined Beyoncé’s all-female band as Musical Director and bassist. She toured the world with this global megastar, and is a featured part of Beyoncé’s current DVD collection, including The Beyonce Experience (2008), I Am…Sasha Fierce (2010), and I Am…Yours (2010). Divinity has also appeared on live recordings and countless television shows, including The Grammys, Saturday Night Live, Oprah, David Letterman and many more. One of the highlights of touring with Beyoncé was performing a show at The White House for President Barack Obama and his family. In keeping with her limitless energy and zest for performing, Divinity Roxx will unveil The Roxx Boxx Experience EP on October 16, 2012 via her own iRoxx Entertainment. With appearances from funk legend Bootsy Collins and Southern rap veteran Killer Mike, The Roxx Boxx Experience is chock full of Divinity’s unique musicianship and production.
This episode we’re into the early- mid 1990’s in Atlanta Hip Hop. So-So-Def, Rowdy and LaFace records begin to take shape alongside the Bass music scene and the underground. Gang activities and curfews have had an impact on Atlanta Hip Hop and the Break-dancing scene has ground nearly to a halt. Graffiti writers, MCs, DJs and producers are still active. Again, this episode concentrates on the early energy surrounding the underground with ciphers featuring Killer Mike aka Mike Bigga as well as Jermaine Dupri’s So-So-Def and Dallas Austin’s Rowdy records. We begin with a look at one segment of the Atlanta underground as it pertains to the growth of what becomes strong National-impacting labels. As we continue this journey, we’ll delve into the Bass scene, the strip club/neighborhood and college scenes. Voices heard: Shannon McCollum, H20 of Mass Influence and Yall So Stupid, Top Cat of Mass Comm who worked at So-so-Def and with Atlanta’s Elemental Magazine before it left the city, Divinity Roxx and DJ Nabs. This is part of a series that aired on BrooklynRadio.net in late 2010 and early 2011 as a lead up to the Film and full version of this documentary. As promised, the entire audio series is being podcasted for free. The film is in production. We're brainstorming and raising money. All music featured is from the city of Atlanta: DJ Variable (of the Audubon Society) - Stalk Kriss Kross - Jump TLC - Hat 2 Da back Lyrical Giants (Bonecrusher’s old group) - Country Cousins Yall So Stupid - Van Full of Pakistanis FKi ft Travis Porter - Koo Koo T.I. - Top Back (instrumental) Divinity Roxx - Rebel (Live) Big Boi ft.
