Mix engineer and recording engineer Jayda Love, along with Dolby Atmos® mix engineer Juan Razuri, join guest host Ben Givarz to discuss their work on Doechii's Grammy®-winning mixtape, “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” which took home Best Rap Album at the 2025 GRAMMY Awards® and earned nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best New Artist. In this episode, Jayda and Juan break down their creative process — from initial recording sessions in Los Angeles to the immersive final mixes in Dolby Atmos.“A lot of the vocal production stuff — as a recording engineer — I'll help with layering and blending. That's a big thing for her. But a lot of the time, in terms of volume and placement and stuff, she's very hands-on. She'll be like, ‘I need those higher.' And naturally, as an engineer, ‘I'm like, these are a little too loud.' But then I'll finally get an ear break or hear it take a step back and I'm like, ‘oh, she's very particular about this stuff, especially the presence of her voice.' And so I can definitely credit a lot of that to her.”—Jayda Love, Mix Engineer, “Alligator Bites Never Heal” by DoechiiStay connected!- You can listen to Doechii's “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” as well as many other classic and contemporary artists in Dolby Atmos, on enabled streaming services.- Follow Doechii on Instagram- Follow mix engineers Jayda Love and Juan Razuri on Instagram- Follow Top Dawg Entertainment on InstagramInterested in creating content in Dolby Atmos? Beyoncé finally got her crowning glory of Best Album of the Year at the 67th Grammy Awards—something that has eluded her illustrious career for decades. “Cowboy Carter” added to her collection of Grammys, I think it was number 36. The singer, who was visibly surprised, dedicated her award to Linda Martel, the first Black woman to perform solo at the Grand Ole Opry. And by the way, Ms. Martel, who's 83, is featured on several of “Cowboy Carter” songs, and it makes Beyoncé the first Black woman to win Album of the Year since 1999, when Lauryn Hill's “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” took the title. Now, while accepting her award for Best Rap Album, Doechii—who is only the third woman to win the honor—thanked God and her mom, Celicia Moore, whom she brought up on stage with her to share the moment. Doechii delivered a powerful message to all of the little Black girls out there, saying they could do whatever they dream of. This year's Grammy telecast, of course, was shifted after the L.A. fires to a fundraiser. And by the end of the show, America had raised more than $7 million for many of the people suffering after the Eaton and Palisades fires. And now for some of the stuff you probably didn't see: that Associated Press reporter who dissed music legend Babyface. In the middle of her interview, she saw Chappell Roan and left Babyface mid-sentence. She didn't apologize until after the clip went viral. And by now, you may have seen Kanye West's wife, who left little to the imagination by going completely naked underneath a sheer minidress. They left after a few minutes on the carpet—hey, nudity is against the law in L.A.! And then there's Kendrick Lamar, who had a great night with five wins, including Song and Record of the Year. But one of the best moments for me was the tribute to the late Quincy Jones, led by Stevie Wonder, who was joined by a student choir from Pasadena Waldorf School and Palisades High School—both severely damaged by the wildfires. The tribute included Cynthia Erivo and Herbie Hancock, who I've got to say set a whole new standard for live performances, along with Jacob Collier, Janelle Monáe, and Lainey Wilson. Yes, it was a great night for the City of Angels, and music's biggest night did not disappoint. Now, we were on the red carpet and backstage in the press room—virtually—kind of an interesting setup. We'll have several clips that you can check out. You don't want to miss them, and that's of course at @aurnonline. And don't forget to follow me on social media at @TanyaHollywood. Few musical genres have the level of deep-seated appreciation for its forefathers (and mothers) like rap and hip hop. And Missy Elliott's 2002 album, "Under Construction" is a wonderful homage to "the good old days" when it was about "British Knights and gold chains," as Elliott raps on "Back in the Day." But for all the looking back, this was also an album where Elliott continued to put her stamp on music. While the single "Work It" continues to be one of the Virginia-born Elliott's biggest and best-known hits, the album itself remains an important one from the early 2000s. "Under Construction" was up for a Grammy for Album of the Year and Best Rap Album of the Year, and has sold more than 2 million copies in the U.S. alone. It also further established Elliott as one of the most important female artists of her generation. You can listen to Under Construction by Missy Elliott on iTunes, Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, and Amazon, although it's probably best on vinyl.

"Grit and perseverance are the reasons I'm still here” - DJ Drama DJ Drama is a quintessential example of the resilience it requires to achieve longevity and lasting success in the music industry. Drama was at the top of the game as a DJ, putting out mixtapes that launched artists' careers and elevated the sound of hip-hop during the early 2000's. But when the music industry collapsed, mixtapes took the blame - and Drama was the FBI's poster child for selling illegal music via mixtapes. He lost everything. Without grit and perseverance, that could have been the end of Drama's career. However, winners understand this critical truth: there is no straight path to success and long-term greatness is achieved by those who are creative, strategic, resilient, and driven. Despite Drama's setbacks, which he elaborates on in our conversation, he remains one of the most wildly influential people in music culture today, even winning a Grammy Award in 2022 for Best Rap Album. To win big, you must be prepared to navigate setbacks and maintain the focus and motivation to KEEP MOVING FORWARD. Most try to avoid drama in their lives, but if you listen to hip hop, this is one Drama you can't avoid. Get familiar. Five years ago, Los Angeles rapper Nipsey Hussle released Victory Lap, his only full length album. It was the high point of a career stretching back to the mid 2000s, when Hussle started releasing mixtapes on his own record label — mixtapes that brought him respect from artists like Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar, but were not widely heard. Victory Lap brought him both the critical acclaim and commercial success he deserved — It hit #2 on the Billboard 200, and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Album. But only a little over a year after its release, Hussle was shot to death outside his clothing store and community center in Crenshaw. In some ways, Hussle's tragic end has overshadowed his incredible life as a musician and community activist. In this conversation with Justin Tinsley, host of the podcast King of Crenshaw, we listen deeply to Victory Lap to hear Nipsey's identity as an artist and consider the legacy of his debut album on its 5th anniversary.
