Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week on the podcast it's an NYU affair with a side of Columbia University, Harvard University and UCLA. I first met my guest as fellow New York University students/alumni in the late 1990's, at a time when slam poetry was beginning to reaching global audiences with influences from hip hop music and other activist movements. Fast foward after more than 20 years to earlier this spring when our paths crossed again at an event hosted by fellow Glocal Citizen and Director of NYU Accra, Chiké Frankie Edozien - The Labone Dialogues. Bryonn is a poet, actor, prison activist, playwright, scholar, author, hip hop artist and professor of African American Studies, Theater, Film & Television, and World Arts & Cultures in the School of the Arts and the School of Law at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Playing over 40 characters, his one-man show, LYRICS FROM LOCKDOWN, won “Best Solo Performance” from the LA Weekly and the NAACP. Executive produced by the late and great, Harry Belafonte, the show tells stories of wrongful incarceration through spoken word poetry, hip hop theater, calypso, comedy and classical music. He founded the Prison Education Program at UCLA in 2015 and in 2019, the program and his performances at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts were featured on the debut episode of LA Stories, which won an Emmy Award. His work has been featured on a diverse range of stages including the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Public Theater (NYC), National Black Theatre (Harlem), NJ PAC, The Actor's Gang Theater (Culver City), Los Angeles Theater Center (LATC), Festival de Liege (Belgium), M-1 Theater Festival (Singapore), Universidad de las Americas (Mexico) and Muteesa Royal University (Uganda), Rikers Island (New York), Marion Prison (Ohio), TEDX at Ironwood State Prison and Sing Sing Prison. The success of coffee globally is based on what coffee represents...community. A beverage that facilitates rootedness, growth, and fruiting of relationships through shared conversation over a cup in our shops or your home. But today, we are an industry. And our concerns tend to be exclusively around just the business of specialty coffee. Where is the heart?  Today I am honored and excited to present an interview with someone who is actively and tenaciously pursuing the heart of coffee in her community by honoring coffees root and growing the fruit of what it can bring to people. We are talking with Head Roaster, Co-founder, and Chief of Staff for Cxffee Black, Renata Henderson! Renata Henderson is Memphis, Tennessee's first Black female roaster and the co-founder and Chief of Staff of Cxffeeblack, the community-oriented, education-based coffee company she built alongside her husband Bartholomew Jones. Founded in 2019 on a mission to return coffee to its African roots and build an equitable Black future, Cxffeeblack made history by creating the first entirely all-Black coffee supply chain from Ethiopia to Memphis — with direct-trade relationships extending to producers like Stephen and Margaret Kuria of Liwani Estate in Nakuru, Kenya. She serves as Head Roaster, Creative Director, and HR lead, Renata brings her deep background in curriculum, instruction, and education into every dimension of Cxffeeblack, from its Specialist-in-Training internship program to the Barista Exchange Program. Her connection to coffee is deeply ancestral — rooted in Ethiopian women's 2,000-year roasting tradition and a family legacy that includes her grandfather marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers' strike, canteen of coffee in hand. Under Renata and Bartholomew's leadership, Cxffeeblack has earned the 2023 Sprudgie Award for Best Film in Coffee, the 2024 Sprudgie Award for Global Notable Roaster of the Year, and the inaugural 2024 Coffee Coalition for Racial Equity Innovator of the Year award. Built with support from more than 500 community investors, Cxffeeblack's new flagship café and global roasting headquarters opened in December 2025 at 3386 Bowen Avenue in Memphis's Mitchell Heights neighborhood — celebrated with an East African coffee ceremony, live music, and a community brunch — and is now equipped with a new roaster tripling the company's capacity as it expands into Memphis grocery stores and new café partnerships across the city. Cxffeeblack has been featured in Vice, NPR, The Hill, and Black Enterprise, and has collaborated with Miir, Oatley, La Marzocco, NBA player JaeShawn Tate, and West African coffee entrepreneurs at the Black Star Line Festival. For Renata, coffee has always been more than a beverage — it is, as she says "an open air church to experience God and His goodness." We discuss: Her Grandfather's coffee and community justice that inspired her Connecting with Coffee's Origin through Cxffeeblack How Cxffeeblack Is Redefining Coffee with Heart and Justice Living Among the People They Serve in Memphis The hard part and the joyful part of coffee work from the heart Navigating Authenticity and Business Guidelines Celebrating Individuality in Coffee Spaces Personal Growth and Community Impact Links: https://www.instagram.com/cxffeeblack/ https://cxffeeblack.com/   KEYS TO THE SHOP ALSO OFFERS 1:1 CONSULTING AND COACHING! Creating an excellent cafe experience is a work of commitment and dedication to caring for both the staff and the community that you serve. The coffee shop functions as a cornerstone of a healthy social structure in any city and advocating for it needs to sometimes go beyond the operations of the shop itself but extend into action taken to change the civil environment a cafe operates in.  Today I am very pleased to welcome to the show, Co-Founder of Kaffeine in London, UK, Peter Dore-Smith Kaffeine is an award winning coffee shop business with 2 locations in London, UK whose stated aim is to be the one of the best coffee shops in the UK through tireless attention to every detail in quality and service. Peter Dore-Smith (originally from Melbourne) has been owner operator of the Kaffeine since its founding it in 2009. It stands today as a foundational cafe in the London coffee scene being one of the first to introduce customers to Aussie style coffee.  Today with two stores, Kaffiene is focused more than ever on the constant pursuit of excellence in the details and especially on making the work of the bar and the experience customers have, something transformative and beneficial to each persons life.  Recently Peter has been active in campaigning to lower VAT in the UK as the tax rate in harming coffee shops, pubs, and other shops similar. This is the activism born from a desire to create better conditions to sustain the great difference coffee shops make in communities.  We cover:  The Genesis of Caffeine and Coffee Culture Planning and Opening Caffeine Challenges in the Early Days Systems and Processes for Success Maintaining Quality and Brand Identity The Importance of Attention to Detail Navigating Trends and Staying Relevant Challenges Facing Small Coffee Businesses Grassroots Advocacy for Coffee Shops The Business of Coffee: Balancing Passion and Profit Links:  Change.Org Petition to Lower VAT https://www.instagram.com/indycoffeeguide/ Kaffeine on IG: @kaffeinelondon      KEYS TO THE SHOP ALSO OFFERS 1:1 CONSULTING AND COACHING! Soloe welcomed being recorded and Renaldo continued with the greeting and record. The two were in a vehicle together as Renaldo record and you may hear street sounds during the recording. Soloe shared how he has gotten a bad rap and made some bad decisions from previous connections in the music industry as a R&B Hip-Hop artist trying to navigate the industry. He shared hos he manager was overcharging him and caused him to miss out on opportunities where he could have been signed by Epic studios. He discloses how he paid the manager of a popular rapper so as to include him on a track but the Manager stole the money and did not follow through on getting his artist to collaborate with him and when he met up with the artist, he was turned down and believed the artist was never told about how he had to pay at least $2000. However, Soloe continues to write music and is looking to get back into his music "bag" as he had taken an hiatus given the bad experiences and is currently working on expanding his talents on other music platforms and getting his name out more. "Frank is better known as FLEYVA, a Hip Hop Artist, Comedian, Music Producer, and famous Content Creator. His rise to fame stemmed from making Viral Videos, which highlight the many differences between Hispanic cultures and upbringings versus White American. Born in Venezuela to Cuban parents who fled from the communist regime, Fleyva soon found himself in the beautiful city of Miami, where his upbringing was a rough one which involved the loss of his dad's teachings, becoming the man of the house at a very young age, struggling financially up into his adolescent years, selling drugs and mingling with the wrong type of crowds. This fueled his music and started building his new network of people and through this new network, he stumbled upon comedy relief and producing Viral Videos. Now, in South Florida and in many Hispanic homes spread throughout the nation and even in South & Central America, Fleyva has become a house hold name that has caused much laughter and brought Hispanic communities a little closer. He is currently releasing his New Album one song at a time as he journeys deeper into his biggest passion of making music. He does this while also preparing for his next comedy show coming up in April or May. This brother is a father of two gorgeous young kids, who is balancing being a Musician, a Comedian, a Content Creator, and all around Business Man. Recently, as I scroll through TikTok I come across a rapper's profile that caught my attention. His name is Robert AKA "Castor Pollux". A true lyricist to the fullest degree. As someone who aspires to own the experience of performing a hip hop song on stage at somepoint, I am thoroughly intrigued. His appearance as a performer not exactly reflecting your standard Hip Hop representative, led me to believe he may have something to offer with his vocalized talent. HE DOES NOT DISAPPOINT. Specifically, I'm fed videos of him behind a desk in a office cubicle. Wearing a cheesy polo apparently, lipsyincing to his own recorded songs. His chin draped in this ZZ top like beard narrowly avoiding a dip in his cup of Joe. I love the contrasting nature of his style. Reminiscent of a popular Hip Hop duo in the 90's titled "The High and Mighty", the sound of his unique voice and catchy cadence hypnotize the little chubby Hip Hop fan that resides within. Naturally, we hit it off as we journey into the past where it is revealed that our substitution for lack of a digital landscape fulfilling our need for adventure becomes the streets and it's inhabitants surrounding our broken family homes. A sacrifice of safety for a taste of the poetic yet dangerous side of reality. What better way than to transform the trauma into poetry. Spotify TikTok YouTube

Hip-Hop Artist Seven J - Betrayed by ChristianityDIVORCED: ChristianityTW: Discussion of suicidal ideationRaised in the heart of Jacksonville, FL, amidst the grit and hustle of the city's most notorious zip code, Seven J emerged as a powerhouse in the world of hip-hop. His music is a testament to his roots, blending raw, lyrical prowess with harmonious melodies that captivate listeners and transport them to another world. With a resume that boasts performances in iconic venues from Los Angeles to New York, Seven J has left his mark on stages worldwide. From the legendary Apollo Theater to the vibrant streets of Jamaica, his electrifying presence has enraptured audiences and earned him acclaim at every turn. Seven was a deeply trusting child, making him vulnerable to the promises of Christianity. His musical talent and compassion for others set him apart as a believer– but the racism he experienced INSIDE the Church as an employee was the spark needed to truly examine the faith he'd devoted his entire life to.While Divorcing Christianity has been disorienting for Seven, making music has been a powerful part of his recovery. He holds nothing back on his album, Sunday Mourning, with songs like If Your God is So Good, BulletZ, and I Lost Everything.
