The consequences of Jho Low's colossal fraud continue to be felt on several continents. In Malaysia, the trial of former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak has entered its fifth year, with new testimony from ex-1MDB lawyer Jasmine Loo. In Switzerland this month, two PetroSaudi execs, Tarik Obaid and Patrick Mahony, have insisted to a judge that their company was not a sham set up to siphon money from the sovereign fund. In the US, former Fugees rapper Pras Michel is appealing his conviction for political conspiracy after doing Jho Low's political bidding in America. This week, on a special edition of Whale Hunting live from Brazen's new London studio, hosts Tom Wright and Bradley Hope share their take on all the latest 1MDB drama. Together, they answer questions submitted by live listeners – including those about Jho Low's potential arrest and where the saga could be headed next. "The Score" by Fugees is a landmark album in the world of hip-hop and R&B, released in 1996. This critically acclaimed and commercially successful record is a fusion of Lauryn Hill's soulful vocals, Wyclef Jean's clever production, and Pras Michel's lyrical contributions. The album seamlessly blends elements of reggae, soul, and rap, resulting in a socially conscious and musically diverse masterpiece. With hits like "Killing Me Softly" and "Ready or Not," The Score not only revolutionized the sound of '90s hip-hop but also conveyed powerful messages about love, identity, and societal issues. Did Pras Michel's lawyer botch his defense by relying on an AI program to create his closing argument? That's what the former Fugees rapper claims in asking a court to overturn his April conviction in an illegal foreign influence scheme. Michel says his lawyer, David Kenner, made a “frivolous and ineffectual” closing argument because he relied on an experimental AI program called EyeLevel.ai. Michel also alleges that Kenner and cocounsel Alon Israely had undisclosed financial interests in the AI company that motivated them to use the AI in his case as a marketing ploy. But Neil Katz, the cofounder and COO of EyeLevel.ai, calls those claims “creative fiction” and “total nonsense.” Katz joins LawNext today to give his version of what happened in the Michel case and to tell us more about EyeLevel.ai, a company he says helps businesses and legal professionals build hallucination-free AI applications using private data. As strange as Fugees member Pras Michel's corruption trial was, featuring everything from a fugitive accomplice to Leonardo DiCaprio's testimony, the news that came out after the verdict was even stranger: Pras Michel's lawyer used artificial intelligence to draft his closing argument. In addition to this, Pras's motion for a retrial includes damning descriptions of his former lawyer's behavior that range from a preoccupation with legal troubles of his own to showing extreme ignorance towards basic legal statutes. Pras further argues that his defense was weak enough that he deserves a new trial because his lawyer has a financial interest in the AI company whose program he used, a clear conflict of interest. This episode digs into the contents of both Pras's superseding indictment and motion for a retrial. Together, they tell two surprising stories, one about a years-long illegal lobbying effort spanning multiple presidential administrations and one about a lawyer who was in over his head, took ideas from AI, and raised questions about whether AI can or should be relied on at all in the legal realm. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hope-jacobson/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hope-jacobson/support
Today David Waldman serves up your KITM Friday Special, fresh out of our news fryolator. Mike Johnson might not be the “unity candidate” most would have come up with, but considering his dogmatism, election denialism, misogynism, authoritarianism, provincialism, fanaticism and mass shooter boosterism, Mike maintains a comprehensive appreciation of Republicanism. Some of Mike's best friends might not be Black, but his son, who was born less than 10 years after his wife, is. Mike sends his hopes and prayers in the general direction of the well-regulated militia still at large somewhere in Maine. Washington DC vagrant George Santos might have somehow found the line he would have to cross to embarrass the Gop, but probably not. Marjorie Traitor Greene forced a vote on a measure censuring Rashida Tlaib but didn't have to force Democrat Becca Balint to motion for her censure. Mo Brooks begged like a dog with tears in his eyes for a pardon for his insurrection. KITM Senior Haitian Correspondent, and President Emeritus of the KITM Fugees Fan Club, Darwin Darko can now be found on Blue Sky, and on today's show reacting to the incredible trouble Pras Michel has found himself in, and the incredibly stupid way his previous lawyers attempted to get him out of trouble. Meanwhile, Democrats once again turn to Savior of the Senate Kyrsten Sinema in their battle to defeat Tommy Tuberville.

In today's episode, Andy & DJ discuss Tucker Carlson releasing a statement after parting ways with Fox News, Former Fugees rapper Pras Michel being found guilty of colluding with China, and President Biden's cheat sheeting showing he had advanced knowledge of journalist's questions.
A federal jury just convicted Fugees Singer and Rapper, Pras Michel. The case is one of the most important political corruption and national security cases we have ever seen and it is being ignored by the mainstream media. On the last day of the trial, only 6 observers were in court. Michel is guilty of accepting upwards of 100 million dollars from what amounts to the Chinese Communist Party's money laundering sceme to funnel cash to Obama campaign coffers. But much of that money was used to infiltrate the department of justice... the Obama white house... and even the Trump white house. One of the main goals of the illegal lobbying scheme was to force the U.S. Government to return the CCP's most hated man and feared enemy, Miles Guo back to China.Miles Guo is the founder of the New Federal State of China. It is Thursday on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show. We start the show often on bad news but today we want to start with some good news out of New Orleans. Dennis Malik Barnes, a high school student out of New Orleans, LA was accepted to 170 colleges. But there is some bad news for Trump. Former Vice President Pence will have to testify against former President Trump. Rapper and one-third of the legendary hip-hop group Fugees, Pras Michel has been convicted in a political conspiracy case for trying to help China influence the US government. Former First Lady, Michelle Obama is coming under fire from some folks on Black Twitter. In an interview with Oprah, she said she cut some of her friends off once her family made it into the White House. She said everyone can go with her and people are calling her fake. The RSMS crew said that Michelle Obama is absolutely correct and sometimes you have to outgrow people. Also on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the crew talked about the student loan debt issue in our country. This comes on the heels of Dennis Malik Barnes receiving $9M in scholarship money. They talk about people not feeling that college is worth the money anymore. Jeff Johnson joined the RSMS Crew and gave us Three Things We Need to Know. Jeff highlighted the life and times of the great icon, Harry Belafonte. And Judy Harris-Dupart joins The RSMS Crew AND MUCH MORE!!!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is speaking out on Disney's lawsuit against him. He described it as a political move that lacks merit. Iran seized an oil-carrying ship that was headed to Texas. The U.S. Navy reported that the ship was in the Gulf of Oman after leaving Kuwait. The vessel was not bearing U.S. flags. A Fugees rapper accused of participating in multi-million-dollar political conspiracies that spanned two presidencies was convicted on Wednesday. The trial against musician Pras Michel included testimony ranging from actor Leonardo DiCaprio to former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. ⭕️Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV
In this episode, Alex talks about word salads, Tucker Carlson's martyrdom, why a third party could spoil democracy, and how an ex-Fugees rapper was involved in a multi-national conspiracy. Alex starts by covering two recent word salads produced by key political figures. One salad was made by Kamala Harris who again tried to give a philisophical speech about the moment we are living in, and instead confused everyone. The second salad was made by Tucker Carlson who finally spoke out after his ousting at Fox News. After a few days of reflection, Alex discusses why he thinks the firing of Fox News was a bad idea both politically and financially for Fox News. Next, Alex analyzes Biden's announcement to run for reelection in 2024 and why he thinks Biden could beat Trump. However, Alex worries that “No Labels” a third party option could prove to be a spoiler for Democrats and democracy, because the group has made unfair comparisons to Trump and Biden. Because there are more moderates remaining in the Democratic Party, Alex argues that “No Labels” would just take votes from Biden. Finally, the former-rapper, Pras Michel, was found guilty in an international influence case. The case sounds like a political thriller involving Malyasia, China, and the United States. The scheme tried to influnce two presidential administrations (Trump and Obama) and it involved testimonies from Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeff Sessions.

Twenty-five years ago, a hip-hop album hit the scene so hard – and so somewhat unexpectedly – that it is still amazing to reflect on the remarkable impact that it had. In a time where gangster rap was shouting the loudest, "The Score," the second album by Fugees, resonated with virtually everyone, scoring Grammys, selling millions of copies, and being the soundtrack to dance clubs for years to come – while underscoring many of the same issues that their more bombastic contemporaries were also rapping about. Of course, it never hurts to have Lauryn Hill's wordplay and sensual voice; however, the musicality and vision of Wyclef Jean and the skills of Pras Michel made the Fugees a tour de force. With hits like "Ready Or Not, "Killing Me Softly" and "Fu-Gee La," Fugees' "The Score" remains one of the most beloved hip-hop and rap albums of all time.
Episode 27 is a brief history and scoring of Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras Michel of New Jersey hip hop group, the Fugees (1994) who happen to be the first hip hop album I personally ever owned. They are also the first artists out to start off a new year in the podcast, 1994. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/taleofthetapes/support

This week we're discussing every album by the Fugees. Made up of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michel, the Fugees are a prime example of a band getting in, nailing it, and getting out. They released only 2 albums during their career, but the impact of their second record, The Score, remains today. Hip hop technicians without a doubt. In the Season 13 premiere, we’ll find out what it took for a group in its own artistic and personal transition to find their place at the top of the charts and on the Grammy stage as the biggest hip-hop act of 1996. Hip-hop had considerably changed from when the Fugees started recording their first album in 1992 to just three years later when they began working on their second effort. The “Golden Age'' was coming to a close, and the genre was at a crossroads. So were the Fugees, though. Coming off their critically and commercially divisive first album, 1994's Blunted on Reality, the New Jersey trio of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michel were similarly looking to reinvent themselves Join host Jill Hopkins as she dials the clock back to the mid-'90s alongside producer Jerry Wonda, Ruffhouse Records co-founders Chris Schwartz and Joe Nicolo, and rapper Psalm One. February 13 marks the 25th anniversary of the Fugees’ seminal album, 'The Score.' Fugees, short for refugees, was formed in New Jersey in the 90s and included Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel. They were known for original hits like “Ready or Not" and covers such as “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” KEXP will be celebrating the album's anniversary all day on Friday, February 12 by playing album cuts, remixes, inspirations, and more. KEXP’s Larry Mizell, Jr. and Gabriel Teodros catch up to talk about the legacy of the Fugees and 'The Score' and why it matters. "To see this group who's Black who also has an immigrant experience embracing it and standing strong in it, I know it changed my life. I can only imagine what it did for countless artists," Teodros said. Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
[JON's PICK] When you think of mid-90s hip hop, a few things probably come to mind... "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio, Wu Tang's "36 Chambers" (along with their numerous projects), various Beastie Boys hits, "Waterfalls" by TLC, A Tribe Called Quest... "Jock Jams"... and Fugee's sophomore album, "The Score." From "Ready or Not" to "Fu-Gee-La" to their Grammy winning cover of "Killing Me Softly With His Song," this album is full of hits and had a big impact on the hip hop and pop scene. Coming from a growing tradition of strong female MCs, Lauryn Hill wasn't pulling any punches with her lyrical approach. She is still considered one of the best female rappers of all time and on top of that, she could sing like an angel. With both of those talents at their disposal, along with legendary Haitian-American producing cousins, Wyclef Jean & Pras Michel, Fugees (named after a derogatory term for Haitian-American refugees) were perfectly poised to rule the airwaves for the rest of the 90s; but there were problems brewing in Fu-Gee-La. During the production of the album, Lauryn and Wyclef were in the midst of a heated affair, which, while contributing to the raw emotion and creativity of the album, ultimately led to their downfall. Much like Fleetwood Mac, they fell apart. However, unlike the members of Fleetwood Mac, they have all had a hard time since their success with "The Score," with Lauryn jailed briefly for tax evasion, Wyclef being accused of mismanaging a charity, and Pras being investigated for suspicious political campaign contributions. Ironically, the feds coming after them for white collar crimes that are often swept under the rug (for certain... lighter skinned peoples), kind of proves some of the paranoia they expressed in the song "The Mask:" "Put the mask upon the face just to make the next day. Feds be hawking me, jokers be stalking me...Hit the streets for relief, I bumped into the Feds, I got kidnapped they took me to D.C... everybody wear the mask but how long will it last?" Music superstar Wyclef Jean, is featured on this episode of Dustin Plantholt’s “Life’s Tough, You Can Be Tougher” podcast. Wyclef, or Clef, has received three Grammy Awards and earned a place among the “top 50 hip-hop players” on a special cover of “Rolling Stone” magazine. He has also collaborated with Queen, Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, Earth, Wind and Fire, Kenny Rogers, Tom Jones, and the late Michael Jackson, to make music. And, as a solo performer, Wyclef has six albums that have sold 9 million copies. The multi-talented artist draws on elements of pop, country, folk, disco, Latin and electronic music. Wyclef was founder and guiding member of the Fugees, a prominent hip-hop group out of New Jeresey that rocketed to fame during the mid-1990s. The Fugees’ name was a reference to the earlier refugee status of two of the three members: Wyclef and Pras Michel. Both had come to the United States from Haiti. (Wyclef was nine when he arrived.) In 1997, the group won a Grammy Award for best rap album, “The Score,” in 1997. As one of the top hip-hop albums of all time, “The Score” climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and was certified six times for platinum status in sales. It included their featured hit, a rendition of Roberta Flack’s 1973 song, “Killing Me Softly.” The Fugees had recorded the album at Wyclef’s studio, in the basement of his uncle’s home in New Jersey. After the group split, Wyclef became a solo performer and a producer. As he notes on his website, “If I didn’t keep moving after ‘The Score,’ you all wouldn’t have had the biggest pop song of all time.” Wyclef was referring to Shakira’s 2006 mega-hit, “Hips Don’t Lie,” a song that he co-wrote. He was also a featured performer on its recording. Other Wyclef hits have included: “Gone Till November,” “Ghetto Superstar” (Pras with Wyclef), Carlos Santana’s No. 1 single “Maria, Maria” (with Wyclef and Product G&B) and the late Whitney Houston’s “My Love is Your Love.” He was the producer for Destiny Child’s breakthrough hit, “No, No, No,” when Beyoncé was just 16. Life’s tough – you can be tougher, like Wyclef Jean, who intends to keep making music. “Every day when I wake up, I go into the studio and record,” he says. “There’s always a guitar and a piano nearby. I’m always writing, that’s my survival. I don’t go to a therapist. My therapy is when I pick up my guitar and sing.”
