The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Send us a textThe invisible art of music production takes center stage in this fascinating deep dive with Jay, Tiffany, and special guest Mark, who brings decades of musical knowledge to the conversation. What begins with nostalgic recollections of sneaking backstage at a David Lee Roth concert evolves into a masterclass on what makes truly great music tick. The trio explores the meticulous methods of legendary producers like Mutt Lange, whose perfectionism had one of Nashville's premier guitarists repeating just four measures for nearly a week until capturing the precise take he wanted. This standard of excellence explains why Lange's productions for artists like AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Shania Twain remain timeless sonic benchmarks decades later.A spirited debate emerges when the question "Who is the greatest bassist of all time?" hits the table. The hosts and audience members champion virtuosos from across genres—Jaco Pastorius's jazz fusion brilliance, Geddy Lee's progressive rock complexity, Les Claypool's avant-garde techniques, and the funk mastery of Flea. After passionate advocacy and thoughtful analysis of what makes a bassist truly exceptional, Victor Wooten emerges victorious, celebrated for his revolutionary approach to the instrument. When analyzing Tyler Braden's "God & Guns and Roses," the conversation transforms into a fascinating breakdown of music production's three pillars: songwriting quality, performance excellence, and production craftsmanship. This analytical framework offers rare insight into how industry professionals evaluate music beyond subjective preferences. The episode also touches on genre crossover controversies, with heated opinions about which artists are making authentic evolutions versus calculated commercial moves. Whether you're a musician, producer, or simply a passionate music fan, this episode delivers both entertainment and education in equal measure.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/ Support the show

With seven Grammy Awards under his belt, Forrest Robinson has built quite the musical career for himself. He's toured as a drummer with bands India.Arie, Victor Wooten, Randy Crawford, Joe Sample, TLC, Ray Parker Jr., The Crusaders, Fifth Dimension, and Arrested Development to name a few. He has also performed live on “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Good Morning America,” and many more. Forrest is also the drummer in Phil Collen's (Def Leppard lead guitarist) blues-rock-n-soul band Delta Deep. On the night of January 8th, 2025, during the devastating California fires that ravaged tens of thousands of acres, including the entire city of Altadena, Forrest's home he shared with his wife Paige, was razed to the ground. This included his music studio, revered drum set ‘Gretchen,' all his musical instruments, and vital computer equipment. Forrest and Paige evacuated their home the evening before, as directed, wearing only the clothes on their backs carrying their small pup. 'The Shoutout Music Appreciation 101', a weekly radio program on the Stationhead music platform and it's dedicated listening family, the TSO Audio Crew, have unified with the creation of this GoFundme to get the attention of many to help us assist Forrest who has been a dear friend, thoughtful person and masterful musical talent. Episode 165: Survived Another Election November 14, 2024 We are back again with another expedition into that great album rock of the 60s & 70s here on Tales Vinyl Tells. This expedition has been going on for quite a while now, the podcast version since December 2019. The radio version premiered in the spring of 2022. I vaguely remember the evenings during this music's time when we'd visit a friend in our apartment complex and we'd burn some while putting on some Carole King or James Taylor or Stones or better yet, Sgt Pepper's. The smell of incense, a lot of times, could mask the weed aroma and I played the psychedelic Smell of Incense from the West Coast Pop Art Experiment Band along with Graham Nash, some jazzy numbers from Seals and Crofts and Victor Wooten, and the closer is a very rocky one from The Rascals that is really good. Hope you enjoy all that! Show your love for the great album rock of the 60s and 70s by becoming a monthly contributor to Tales Vinyl Tells. Learn more at patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. Thank you so much, especially you who already contribute monthly and I hope you feel really good supporting this effort to enjoy what I think is the best creative music of this generation. You can stream Tales Vinyl Tells Wednesdays at five central time on Radiofreenashville.org. And all of the episodes are free and downloadable on many podcast apps and of course at studiomillswellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells. Dig this hour!

Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra. In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean. Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat. Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Chris Fryar, primarily known for his work with the Zac Brown Band. He has also worked with Oteil and the Peacemakers, led by bassist Oteil Burbridge of the Allman Brothers Band, as well as with Victor Wooten, John Popper, Steve Bailey, and many more. Chris is powerful, creative, and consistent, yet very reactive and conversational with his playing. I was so happy to chat with him. I'll be honest—I haven't really said this in an intro before, but this conversation is what I envisioned when I started this podcast. Chris is incredible at sharing his story through his choices and offers invaluable advice along the way. This is hands down one of my favorite episodes. Please enjoy my chat with Chris Fryar about the five records that shaped him into the musician he is today. And make sure you check out his honorable mentions. He's got plenty, and they'll all make you a better player. I promise. Cheers! This week, we're joined by a truly inspirational guest, Andrew – a devoted fan of the podcast whose life story is nothing short of remarkable. Andrew's journey takes us from the challenging streets at a young age, through an impressive career in the NFL, to facing and overcoming life-altering injuries and brain trauma. His resilience and strength are awe-inspiring, as he rebuilt his life with the help of meditation and new business ventures. Andrew's story begins with a tumultuous childhood, leading him to be homeless at 13. Yet, through sheer grit and determination, he carved a path to success in the NFL, playing for the St. Louis Rams right after their Superbowl win. Unfortunately, a severe injury ended his NFL career prematurely, leaving him with significant brain injuries. This dark period in his life, however, opened the door to an extraordinary transformation. In an almost cinematic twist of fate, Andrew's life takes an unexpected turn towards healing and success. He meets Deepak Chopra, who introduces him to the power of meditation, aiding his recovery from brain injuries. From this point, Andrew embarks on an entrepreneurial journey, turning his challenges into opportunities. His connection with the podcast has also led to fascinating ventures and friendships, including becoming a business partner with Paul Stamets and forming a close bond with Victor Wooten. https://cartermclean.com Carter was born in San Francisco and shortly thereafter moved to Connecticut. This is where McLean listened to and fell in love with music and especially the drums. At age 10, he started his journey as a musician. Broadway wasn't even on his radar when he started working at Manny's Music in Manhattan just prior to 9/11. The self-taught musician had just wrapped up his studies at University of Colorado, Boulder and was hoping to land a gig with someone like Sting, Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon. But then, while working his shift and playing at the store, he got noticed by a vet of Stevie Wonder's band Dennis Davis and got invited to play with legendary musician Roy Ayers in Harlem. While touring with Melvin Sparks in 2002 McLean was approached to be a sub at The Lion King in NYC. This eventually lead to McLean taking over the chair at the hit show in 2011. From Charlie Hunter to the Lion King on Broadway, McLean has been busy touring and doing studio work as well as having a busy teaching schedule. In addition McLean has shared the stage or recorded with Jamie McLean, Greg Holden, Charlie Hunter, Victor Wooten, Anthony Hamilton, Bernie Worrell (Parlament Funkadelic), Fred Wesley (James Brown), Shelby Johnson (Prince), Melanie Gabriel (Peter Gabriel) Leni Stern, Matt Duke and many others. For more, subscribe to Broadway Drumming 101 here: When you subscribe for only $10 a month, you will receive behind-the-scenes access to the life of a musician who makes a living on Broadway through YouTube videos, bi-weekly podcasts, and articles on what you need to know. There's a reason more people listen to Guns N' Roses than Victor Wooten, and it's not because Duff McKagan is better at playing arpeggios! But still, good technique is something that every bassist should add to their skill set, and in this episode, I'm answering all of your questions surrounding our Technique Accelerator. I hope it gives you a little extra time to check out the course – and to find your next breakthrough on the bass!In this interview you're going to learn:Why are we talking up our Technique Accelerator? How I developed my own technique (with a little help from Gary Willis). Why we've included a bunch of free bonuses with the course. Why might it not be for you?And much, much more!
How did this pod get such a mighty calibre of guest all in one week?? First off, we got legendary comedic multi-hyphenate performers, David Wain & Ken Marino joining Andy & Nick to discuss their newly minted touring rock band: Middle Aged Dad Jam Band! And we get to listen in, all googly eyed as they discuss how their 8 hour jam sessions may have strained their marriages. But who's this on the Interview Hour? Oh, no big deal. Just one of the most prolific and innovative bass guitarists of all time: the luminary GOAT of the 4-strings: Mr. Victor Wooten!! Editorial Note: Victor's done for the bass world what Albert Einstein did for physics. He's a gift not just to the bassists of the world, but to anyone with sentience (and a will to groove to good music & deep pocket). On Today's episode I give my thoughts on The Music Lesson by Victor Wooten. This book had been suggested to me for years, and I am so glad I finally took the time to read it. Even if it is somewhat bizarre and fantastical at times, I'm sure it will be one of the most memorable musical books I read in my lifetime. Today we chat with double bass maker Nick Lloyd about the story behind his bench copy of Edgar Meyer's Giovanni Battista Gabrielli from 1769. Nick copied Edgar's bass (#55) for Paul Kowert, and the Meyer bass copy that he bright to ISB (#60) was played by Gary Karr during the ISB headliner concert with Steve Bailey and Victor Wooten. Enjoy, and be sure to check out more of Nick's great work on his website, Facebook, and Instagram! Subscribe to the podcast to get these interviews delivered to you automatically!
