In this episode, we talk to Fred Patterson, aka Phast Phreddie, about his work at the ARChive of Contemporary Music, plus his own magazine Back Door Man and his band Thee Precisions. Beginning with his early musical life teaching classes with Don Waller at UCLA's Experimental College, we hear about how he named Back Door Man after a Howlin Wolf song and wanted to cover "hard core rock n roll". Phreddie remembers how different it was working with R. Meltzer compared to Lester Bangs, who both contributed to the mag. Next, we hear about where Thee Precisions got their name and how they were intended as a garage rhythm 'n' blues combo that might fit into south central L.A.'s rockabilly scene without doing rockabilly. After telling us about moving across the country to help set up a record shop in Albany, Phreddie then takes us back to the ARChive of Contemporary Music's original mission statement to collect two of every record and explains how they operate. Three clips from a 1977 Mary Wilson audio interview prompt Barney to wonder whether the Supremes are the greatest girl group of all time. To wrap things up, we pay tribute to Sly Dunbar of Sly & Robbie before Mark and Jasper talk us out with highlights from pieces including interviews with Isaac Hayes and De La Soul. Composant sous des couches de couettes dans son appartement de l'Opéra, elle puisait sa chaleur non pas dans son environnement, mais dans les souvenirs du soleil des Caraïbes qu'elle venait de quitter. Ce qui devait être un voyage de deux semaines en décembre 2020 s'est transformé en deux ans et demi entre la Barbade, la Grenade — où ses parents avaient grandi — puis la Jamaïque, un long séjour qui lui a offert un nouveau sentiment d'identité. «Vivre en Jamaïque, c'était la première fois que j'habitais dans un pays à majorité noire», dit-elle. «Les Jamaïcains sont très eux-mêmes, sans s'excuser. J'ai choisi de vivre à Paris, et je me sens plus moi-même, plus expressive et plus à l'aise ici qu'à Londres, et davantage appréciée et reconnue en tant qu'artiste aussi. Mais il y a des microagressions et des microracismes auxquels nous devons faire face chaque jour en tant que personnes de couleur. Quand je suis sortie de cet environnement, je me suis dit : «Merde, c'est ça que je gérais tout ce temps.» J'avançais simplement en acceptant certains comportements négatifs comme un acte de survie mentale.» En Jamaïque, elle a collaboré avec Sly Dunbar, l'un des batteurs légendaires de l'île, le sortant presque de sa retraite pour une session improvisée. Quand je suis sortie de cet environnement, je me suis dit : «Merde, c'est ça que je gérais tout ce temps.» J'avançais simplement en acceptant certains comportements négatifs comme un acte de survie mentale.» En Jamaïque, elle a collaboré avec Sly Dunbar, l'un des batteurs légendaires de l'île, le sortant presque de sa retraite pour une session improvisée. Sly Dunbar, the legendary Jamaican drummer and producer best known as one half of the iconic duo Sly & Robbie, has died at age 73, according to the BBC. Ce qui devait être un voyage de deux semaines en décembre 2020 s'est transformé en deux ans et demi entre la Barbade, la Grenade — où ses parents avaient grandi — puis la Jamaïque, un long séjour qui lui a offert un nouveau sentiment d'identité. «Vivre en Jamaïque, c'était la première fois que j'habitais dans un pays à majorité noire», dit-elle. «Les Jamaïcains sont très eux-mêmes, sans s'excuser. J'ai choisi de vivre à Paris, et je me sens plus moi-même, plus expressive et plus à l'aise ici qu'à Londres, et davantage appréciée et reconnue en tant qu'artiste aussi. This London born drummer started his music career in the mid 80s as drummer and co founder of cult space-rock band Ozric Tentacles. Juggling a busy gig and festival schedule along with art school commitments, he completed his degree at Middlesex Polytechnic in graphic design and then promptly returned to music. His influences range from John Bonham, Phil Colins, Sly Dunbar, Steve Gadd, Billy Cobbam, Bernard Purdie, Alphonse Mouson, Jeff Poccaro, Tony Williams and Lenny White. Joining Acid Jazz act The Sandals as lead guitarist in 1990 saw tours follow and soon after he was introduced to Acid Jazz' new signing Jamiroquai completing frontman JK's new live band line up as their drummer. The band was quickly signed to Sony and he went on to record on the classic chart topping debut Emergency on Planet Earth LP playing drums, some guitar and co-writing the song If I Like It I Do It. A hectic schedule of touring and worldwide promotion followed, including the release of singles Too Young To Die, Blow Your Mind and Emergency on Planet Earth. Leaving the band in 94 and together with musician mates, funky guitar maverick from The Brand New Heavies Simon Bartholomew and bass player Nick Seymour, they formed the supergroup Akimbo also signed to Acid Jazz label. The band headlined Londons' Soho Jazz festival two years running appearing at Ronnie Scotts and Madame JoJo's Deep funk sessions hosted by legendary rare funk Dj and collector Keb Darge. By 1999 Nick and Keb Darge started their own independent label Deep Funk Records. Other collaborations include soul jazz keyboardist Jessica Lauren, Nu soul prodigies Vannessa Simon and Omar, FBI, Raw Deal and The Superphonics. Countless gigs, sessions and jams continue to this day with many of Londons top funk and soul musicians.
