For every Miracle Mop, Bombas sock or Squatty Potty, there's a Plushky. What's a Plushky? It's a stuffed, colorful plushie shaped like a country. For six years, from 2010 to 2016, then Austin-based entrepreneur Ricardo Jiménez engaged in a relentless pursuit to find the market, customers, distributors, investors, partners and sellers that would make his line of Plushkies the next big thing. Given these cuddly plush stuffed toys can't be found on shelves of any major retailers or on any online marketplace, we already know the ending of this story. Jiménez failed in his efforts to get others to see his vision that these toys would bring the children of the world together. But not every entrepreneur can be a Joy Mangano, Dave Heath or Bobby and Judy Edwards. In fact, nine times out of ten, entrepreneurs fail. But is it truly the ending of his story or his Plushkies? In his new book, CRASH COURSE: A Founder's Journey to Saving Your Startup and Sanity (Forefront Books; June 18, 2024), Jiménez shares what it's like to pour your heart, your passion and your financial resources into a dream and vision that few others see. And, most excruciatingly, fail at it. Have we been given a how-to on what it's like to fail at a start-up? In CRASH COURSE, Jiménez asks: Can failure inform a different narrative of accomplishment, as opposed to success by mainstream measures? In his book, Jiménez offers advice on how to:· Learn the most valuable information first. What do your customers want? What are they willing to pay? How are they going to use the product?· Know your motives before you leap. Are you doing this for yourself or others? What is the number one driver of your decision to start a business?· Trust yourself. Follow your heart and do not fear the outcome, he says. You are bigger than your company or your enterprise. Life comes first, business second. · Learn when to let go. He shares the spiritual journey he took that led him to understand that sometimes the best thing to do is to let go.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Ten years ago, at age 60, Judy and her husband were trying to figure out what they were going to do for their retirement. They had started multiple businesses in the past, with varying degrees of success, but were still needing something more to help them feel more secure with their finances. At the same time, Judy went to the doctor to get help with a medical problem she had always had. That meeting with her doctor changed her life forever, and inspired her to create a product that has now changed the lives of millions of people. Since starting Squatty Potty, they have sold over $160 million worth of product, and were able to sell their shares of the business to be secure and comfortable in their retirement. Listen to this episode to hear about that doctor's appointment and how a stool for your stool changed everything.
Guest Bio:The Squatty Potty Story begins at the home of the Edwards Family — Bill, Judy, and their son Bobby, the inventors and creators of Squatty Potty toilet stools and the owners of Squatty Potty, LLC, a small family business in Saint George, Utah.Although the family had always been very health conscious, they were dealing with some problems that most families are too embarrassed to discuss — constipation and hemorrhoids. In 2010, in search of relief, Judy Edwards consulted a therapist, who suggested that squatting might improve her condition by helping to relax her colon.Though unaccustomed to the practice of squatting to poop, Judy was desperate to try anything, and squatting did seem to be the more natural way to do one's business. After all, people had been squatting to poop since the dawn of humanity, and three quarters of the world's population still swear by it.As would be the case, Judy's home in southern Utah was equipped with a modern, western-style toilet. While she found relief with the squatting position — raising her feet on a step stool while sitting on the toilet — it was very awkward and uncomfortable.Short of strapping on stilts, she tried everything to place herself in the proper position to ease her discomfort — different step stools, books, buckets, and other easily procured household items. One was too high, another was too low, and none of them felt just right. The clutter also blocked the path to the most urgently needed household appliance, resulting in numerous incidents of stubbed toes, especially in the middle of the night.Fortunately, about 35 years before this story began, Judy had given birth to a baby boy, Bobby Edwards, whom Judy and Bill raised to become a successful designer and contractor. When Bobby caught wind of his mother's plight, he quickly realized that the standard stepstool could be redesigned. Working in the family's garage, Bobby built several prototypes until he found one that worked — a platform of optimum height and width for assuming the squatting position and U-shaped to tuck conveniently out of the way when not in use.The device worked so well, the Edwards built several more to give to friends and family at Christmas, and the gift was such a hit, Bobby launched a website in 2011 and started marketing and selling the product online. Squatty Potty was born. Online sales were a resounding success, with the home-based business grossing over $1 million in its first year. In that year, the Edwards had shipped their product to every state in the U.S. along with 17 other countries. In 2012, shortly after moving production from their garage to a local warehouse, the “Dr. Oz” show called. Bill Edwards answered and thought it was a prank call from one of his kids, but he soon realized that the call was legit, and he shipped a Squatty Potty to the studio, so they could film the segment. When the segment aired, orders started pouring in.
https://www.squattypotty.com/ Judy Edwards and her son Bobby are the inventors of the famous Squatty Potty. They originally had a tough journey trying to figure out how to market a product and topic that no one wants to talk about, pooping! They hired the Harmon Brothers who took the offensive topic of “poop talk” and marketed it in a humorous and whimsical way with unicorns and ice cream. Their infamous commercial has been viewed over 100 million times! Squatty Potty is also one of the most successful Shark Tank pitches of all time. Aside from the humorous nature of the subject, the benefits of Squatty Potty can be very serious. For some people, it is a life-changing product improving the movement of their bowels. Judy shared that when they first did research on their product they found that two thirds of the world's population was squatting. Howard Stern was one of the early adopters of the product. He loves poop talk, so when he tried a Squatty Potty, he raved about it! It was such a new concept at the time getting publicity from famous people like Howard Stern really paid off for them. A year and a half ago, Judy and her husband sold part of the business and stepped back and retired. They are living the American dream! Their product line has grown and they have added new line extensions for travel and for kids. There is a new portable version of the Squatty Potty that folds so you can carry it and stow it away. They have also added a smaller model that can fit in a suitcase. Recently, they had an inventor approach them with a great idea called the Invisibrush and they did a licensing deal to add the product to their line. The new product is a toilet brush that goes behind the toilet tank so you can't see it and it isn't lying on the floor. Bringing an invention to market? 054 | How Judy Edwards Made Millions in the Pooping Industry Judy Edwards the face of a company known worldwide for helping people poop isn’t exactly what most kids dream of becoming when they grow up, but that’s where fate and family led Judy Edwards or “Mama Squatty,” as she’s called by friends, family, and colleagues. After raising seven children, Judy eventually became too pooped to poop, which led to the birth of her family’s brain child — Squatty Potty. Is the thought of experiencing a massive failure leaving you afraid to take a leap and start your dream business? Or, have you experienced a failure, and now you’re too afraid to get up and try again? This week’s guest, Judy Edwards, has started several businesses along with her husband, that they ended up closing, resulting in massive failures. However, Judy never allowed failures to keep her down, in fact, she believes that without failure there can be NO success. This is how, at the age of 61, Judy Edwards, who had been struggling with constipation, created her massively successful product, Squatty Potty, along with her son and husband. If Judy had feared the failure she might encounter, we all might still have trouble pooping. If you’re ready to start looking at failures as your stepping stones to success, then this is a MUST LISTEN episode of Success Unfiltered! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Judy Edwards. Judy shares who she is and what her product is. The biggest NO that Judy experienced was the one in her head - self-doubt. When Judy, her husband and her son sat down to talk about marketing the squatty potty they worried they wouldn’t find the right angle because people don’t like to admit they poop. After Judy and her family settled on marketing it as better for elimination, they went to a women’s trade show where they were not well received. Judy knew her product could change people’s lives so she kept going, even when people weren’t willing to come up and talk to her in person at trade shows. Judy and her family decided to start giving away Squatty Potty away for free to health bloggers and asked that they write a review on the Squatty Potty. That’s when business started to pick up! Squatty Potty began in Judy and her husband’s garage and they were made out of wood. Judy knew that wasn’t sustainable, so they began investigating other options. Positive feedback is what helped keep Judy going, before sales really started taking off. Squatty Potty is a GREAT gift to give (I would know, I’ve given them to friends and family). ;-) Judy still deals with intimidation around the fact that her product has to do with pooping. Every step of Judy’s journey was filled with a little doubt, from working out of their garage, to buying a bigger warehouse, everything had a learning curve. Dr. Oz’s people contacted Judy via a cold call, but they had to convince her husband that they were legit. Such a good story that Judy shares in this episode! Whenever doubt would creep in, other doors would open, which in turn encouraged Judy and her family to keep going. Judy and her husband purchased the injection molding machine and brought it to Utah, so that they could be a part of the manufacturing process, which speed things up. At 60 years old, Judy and her husband had virtually NO income because of losing money on real estate in 2008, so they had spent time praying and hoping that something would happen to help them make extra income, then the Squatty Potty was born. Judy and her husband are now retired from Squatty Potty, but are still on the board of directors. Judy shares that she and her husband have been married for almost 51 years. Judy shares what she’d tell her younger self. Judy and her husband have started and then walked away from many businesses, and lost upwards of $2M - she shares more of the story in this episode. Shawn is thrilled to talk to Squatty Potty creator Bobby Edwards about the undeniable anatomical superiority of squatting over sitting to poop, and how shameful Victorian taboos have all but erased the practice for 'modern' Americans. They also touch on the constipation which plagued Bobby’s mom (and business partner) eventually giving rise to the SquattyPotty, and the parallel overcoming of Gay shame and repression that have enabled Shawn and Bobby to go proud in more ways than one. Finally Bobby shares his branding secrets for getting a poop-themed product in Bed, Bath & Beyond, thanks to his recent appearance on Shark Tank.
