Darryl "God" Whiting ran a 100+ member drug gang out of the Orchard Park public housing project in the early 90's. The operation is said to have overseen a 24hr a day crack distribution business, that wrought havoc in Roxbury. He was celebrated as a local hero, while simultaneously decimating the entire neighborhood. Darryl also had legitimate businesses and a thriving "Social Club" in Grove Hall, however it was merely a front for selling drugs. "God's" reign lasted about 4-5 years, making at times $100,000 a day. The organization was ultimately penetrated by a maverick undercover Boston Housing police officer Jeff Coy. Coy and other cops brought the "New York Boys" down and the prison sentences were legendary. Darry Whiting received a life sentence for leading this sprawling criminal organization. The housing development was largely ruined by Whiting's organization. Isaac French, founder of Experiential Hospitality, has one of the crazier stories I've heard in hospitality about how he built Live Oak Lake - a 7-cabin landscape hotel in Texas - for $2.3 million in 2022 and sold it for $7 million in 2023.Isaac credits social media and working with influencers as the biggest factors of this success story - so I wanted to share how exactly he did this with you. In this episode, you'll learn the common misconception most people have with social media, how to leverage your location as an advantage, how Isaac did outreach to influential people on social media and decided who to work with - and ....what he learned through it all. Investigative journalist Max Marshall joins the show to discuss his new book, “Among the Bros,” which delves into the bust of five College of Charleston Kappa Alpha fraternity members and their friends who were part of a multi-million dollar narcotics network. And if that doesn't sound dirty enough for you, the arrests came as the result of an investigation into the murder of a former student who was the son of a luxury real estate developer. It's a story of greed, entitlement, and as Max writes, the consequences of living a life without any consequences.
