AnnMarie Milazzo is a musical storyteller with an incredible gift for shaping sound and emotion. Her concept album The Shape of Things, inspired by Joy the Musical, has completely captured my imagination, and in this conversation, we break down how it all came together. She opens up about her creative process, the organic way she approaches vocal arranging and songwriting, and why concept albums are having a resurgence in musical theatre. We also get into the balancing act of artistic integrity, learning from failure, and why she chooses to stay offline when it comes to reviews and feedback. But one of the most unexpected and fascinating parts of this conversation? AnnMarie's childhood stories of growing up in a former funeral home. From eerie encounters to an ever-present sense of energy in the house, her ghost stories are the kind that stick with you long after you hear them. Whether you're a fan of her music, curious about the creative process, or just love a good supernatural tale, this episode is packed with insights, laughter, and a few chills. AnnMarie Milazzo is a Grammy and Tony-nominated vocal arranger, composer, and songwriter. Her latest work, The Shape of Things, is a concept album featuring songs from Joy the Musical, which tells the inspiring true story of Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop. She has been a key creative force behind some of Broadway's most iconic modern musicals and continues to push the boundaries of storytelling through music. For every Miracle Mop, Bombas sock or Squatty Potty, there's a Plushky. What's a Plushky? It's a stuffed, colorful plushie shaped like a country. For six years, from 2010 to 2016, then Austin-based entrepreneur Ricardo Jiménez engaged in a relentless pursuit to find the market, customers, distributors, investors, partners and sellers that would make his line of Plushkies the next big thing. Given these cuddly plush stuffed toys can't be found on shelves of any major retailers or on any online marketplace, we already know the ending of this story. Jiménez failed in his efforts to get others to see his vision that these toys would bring the children of the world together. But not every entrepreneur can be a Joy Mangano, Dave Heath or Bobby and Judy Edwards. In fact, nine times out of ten, entrepreneurs fail. But is it truly the ending of his story or his Plushkies? In his new book, CRASH COURSE: A Founder's Journey to Saving Your Startup and Sanity (Forefront Books; June 18, 2024), Jiménez shares what it's like to pour your heart, your passion and your financial resources into a dream and vision that few others see. And, most excruciatingly, fail at it. Have we been given a how-to on what it's like to fail at a start-up? In CRASH COURSE, Jiménez asks: Can failure inform a different narrative of accomplishment, as opposed to success by mainstream measures? In his book, Jiménez offers advice on how to:· Learn the most valuable information first. What do your customers want? What are they willing to pay? How are they going to use the product?· Know your motives before you leap. Are you doing this for yourself or others? What is the number one driver of your decision to start a business?· Trust yourself. Follow your heart and do not fear the outcome, he says. You are bigger than your company or your enterprise. Life comes first, business second. · Learn when to let go. He shares the spiritual journey he took that led him to understand that sometimes the best thing to do is to let go.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
If you've ever turned on QVC or HSN, you've probably seen Joy Mangano or one of her many inventions, like the Miracle Mop. Or you may have seen Jennifer Lawrence portray her in the 2015 hit movie, “Joy.” But Joy's wild success started with a simple idea—and a big risk. On this episode of She Pivots, Joy talks with Emily about her early invention ideas (a fluorescent flea collar for pets!), getting Miracle Mop off the ground as a single mom with three young kids, the decision to sell her company to HSN, her new partnership with Pitbull, and the central role of family in her business decisions. She Pivots was created by host Emily Tisch Sussman to highlight women, their stories, and how their pivot became their success. Get ready for a cinematic exploration of innovation and intellectual property as depicted in popular movies about inventors and creators. In this episode, IP Goes Pop!® co-hosts Michael Snyder and Joseph Gushue, peel back the layers of iconic movies that not only inspire us, but also shed light on the realities of building successful businesses and protecting ideas. Starting with 1988's Tucker: The Man and His Dream, your hosts dive into the story of Preston Tucker and his revolutionary automobile, the Tucker 48. This tale not only epitomizes the spirit of disrupting the status quo but also draws parallels with modern auto-innovators like Tesla. Tucker's journey sheds light on the crucial role of patents in protecting groundbreaking ideas, emphasizing the continued real-world relevance of Tucker's innovations in today's automobiles. The episode next moves through the intricate mazes of copyrights, branding, and partnerships. The Social Network, which depicts the founding of Facebook, serves as a prime example of the potential legal pitfalls that can emerge in the creation of successful companies. It delves into the entangled web of legal battles and the importance of safeguarding ideas in the tech world. This evolution, of what is now known as Meta, highlights the necessity of meticulous contracts and legal representation at different stages of bringing an idea into the world. Another extraordinary origin story is that of the McDonald's franchise, as portrayed in The Founder. While the success of the McDonald's franchise demonstrates how effective branding and strategic IP licensing can catapult a company to global recognition, this cautionary tale of partnerships offers valuable lessons for businesses of all sizes. Ultimately the McDonalds brothers lost control of their company, their name, and their IP such as the “golden arches,” when they were outmaneuvered by an emboldened Ray Kroc and a “handshake” agreement. The film Flash of Genius draws attention to the pitfalls and triumphs of patent litigation. Lesson learned are especially valuable for inventors and creators, as it underscores the complexities of litigation, the importance of having competent legal representation, and the dangers of self-representation in intellectual property matters. Listeners will come away from this episode not only entertained but also enriched with a deeper understanding of the intersection between intellectual property and popular culture. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a legal professional, a student, or simply a movie buff, IP Goes Pop!® offers a captivating and educational experience that will entertain and inform. Don't miss out on this engaging and enlightening journey through the world of IP and movies! Starting points: 2:32 Disruption, Technology, and Patents in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) 9:40 Copyright and Idea Protection in The Social Network (2010) 16:43 Branding, Trade Secrets, and Franchising in The Founder (2016) 25:04 The Case of Joy Mangano's Miracle Mop in Joy (2015) 28:55 Patents in Flash of Genius (2008) 34:16 Final Thoughts

Marvin Segel is back (with improved audio) to chat about the USA Network series "America's Big Deal". Executive produced by famed TV shopping guest and inventor Joy Mangano, it's billed as America's first "shoppable competition series that invites entrepreneurs from across the country to sell their ready-made products on-air to home viewers". Did it work? Shawn and Marvin will share their thoughts on this special episode.
Guests: Bob Sansevere (1:28:10), Jessica Collins (2:15:08), Joy Mangano (2:36:39), Matthew Broussard (3:00:56). The KQ Morning Show - Originally aired on October 8, 2021 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Joy Mangano's life story found in the Book Inventing Joy brings hope and inspiration. This is what I learned: you don't have to be good to get started you just have to start. Shift your skis don't necessarily stop. Celebrate the small wins. Questions ignite invention. "Over, under, around or through." Amway, then KMart, then QVC. Circle back to people instead of cutting them out of your lives, see the best in others instead of the worst. Always reinvent yourself. Her business grew 25X moving from QVC to HSN. Fix problems with attention and patience. You don't have to be good to get started. Speak up. Treat others fairly especially when they treat you unfairly. Mix family with business. Failure fills your basket with opportunities. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thriving-twogether/support

Connie Inukai had a BIG 2015! She’s an inventor who recently launched her first product on QVC called the Tip n' Split. At about the same time, she retired from her teaching job at University of MD and her fifth grandchild was born. She won the Washington, D.C. version of Shark Tank and is a finalist for Shark Tank and is hoping to make an appearance in the near future. She won the gold medal at INPEX Invention Show and was awarded second place at InnovateHer, a showcase for inventions that benefit women. Listen to this interview to learn how Connie created the second career that she had been thinking about as she raised her children and worked as a college professor. The Tip n' Split is the size of a small calculator. It features a magnifying glass, a light so that you can see your menu in a dark restaurant, and it calculates a tip and splits the bill which is handy for when you go out to eat with groups. Connie created the second career that she had been thinking about as she raised her children and worked as a college professor. Connie's working on other inventions and we will check in with her again to see what she's accomplished. If you liked the movie Joy, about inventor Joy Mangano, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper, you'll enjoy this interview with Connie!
