Deceased are up to their old tricks again. Going through their vast discography it's obvious they're not afraid of the odd cover tune. As evident by their "Rotten To The Core" and "Cadaver Traditions" cover comps. So now with the "Ghostly White" album cycle in the books, good friend of the show Mr. King Fowley, is putting their down time to some good use. Thus "Rotten To The Core...2." So we got His Kingliness on the horn to discuss this latest project as well as a few other things like the band's run in Chris Barnes back in the day. King's always good for a story or three. In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we weigh in on the Tom Morello/ignorant fans situation and cast our votes to get Oderus Urgungus immortalized in Richmond. Musically, we crank some Deceased, Cauldron Black Ram, Carrion Vale, Wraith, Final Conflict, Nunslaughter, and of course, Gwar!! Finally, we introduce Canadian black metaller Hellmoon in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns!! This Episode is sponsored by Trve Kvlt Coffee. Summon the coffee demons to possess yourself a cup today! Welcome to the 2020 debut episode of Metal Matters. We’re kicking the year off with author and music journalist Jon Wiederhorn. If you’re read anything about metal or extreme music, it’s likely that you’ve read Jon’s words. His work has appeared in Decibel and Revolver among others. You may also have read his words in his books Louder Than Hell (co-authored with Katherine Turman), biographies on Al Jourgansen, Scott Ian or Roger Miret. We’re on the eve of the release of Jon’s new book, Raising Hell, a collection of war stories and anecdotes by some of the sickest dudes in metal including, but not limited to Phil Anselmo, Ben Falgoust, Randy Blythe, Max Cavalera, Gary Holt, King Fowley…the list goes on.Intro: “Welcome to Hell” – VenomOutro: “Highway to Hell” – AC/DC See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
King Fowley is one of death metal’s forefathers and the founder of the legendary death metal band DECEASED and old-school metal troupe OCTOBER 31. Fowley, who is known the metal world over, as one of the most ardent fans of true metal, has always been one of the most vocal, upfront figures and never pulls any punches when asked of his opinion. He has been tearing the music world asunder for almost three decades and has a life that he has lived to the fullest. Fowley’s life story is chronicled in Stay Ugly: The Life and Near Deaths of King Fowley, chronicling Fowley’s early days, how DECEASED formed, the D.C.- area metal scene of the mid-’80s, and how King escaped death multiple times. King nearly died from a horrendous blood clot, survived a stroke and kicked drugs and alcohol, two addictions that had a complete stranglehold on him.

King Fowley is an American metal head and singer for the legendary Death Metal band Deceased, as well as the popular Heavy Metal group October 31. He is a pioneer of the 1st wave of American Death Metal who has released 11 full length albums to date. His larger than life persona and energy bursts through brillantly in this episode, so much so there's a bit of a double tracked bleed that is a result of our intimate setting at the bar upstairs in Ralph's Rock Diner. We discuss his upcoming autobiography entitled "Stay Ugly" which recounts several life lessons he's experienced from over 40 years of living the Hard Rock lifestyle. Naturally we also discuss his label Old Metal Records, being a KISS fan, along with some hints about future activity with Decased. It is the night of the Deceased and KING FOWLEY calls into the show giving us a surreal overdose of information on the band. Have you observed the convoluted mess that black metal has seemingly become? Heard what our metal media call "Women In Metal"?...
Robert Louis Stevenson once wrote, "saints are sinners who kept on going." So would that make King Fowley the patron saint of Metal? To say that he's kept on going is an understatement, with band lineup changes, label issues, and health scares that could frighten anyone into their grave (Fowley is clearly immune to burial). You could also apply the RLS quote as a metaphor for Deceased's music: the gutwrenched dread of their early releases which has evolved over time into the melodic, hook-laden anthems of their recent discography. King called in to BNM to talk touring, the current state of Deceased and the upcoming album, as well as very important matters such as old KISS albums, scary movies, New Wave music, '80s television, the ghost of Rex Smith, dying telephones, and the eternal question humans have been asking themselves for aeons: Janet, Chrissy, Cindy or Terri?
