fWotD Episode 3272: Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 20 April 2026, is Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant. The Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant is a theme restaurant at Disney's Hollywood Studios, one of the four main theme parks at Walt Disney World. Established in May 1991, the restaurant is modeled after a 1950s drive-in theater. Walt Disney Imagineering designed the booths to resemble convertibles of the period, and some servers act as carhops while wearing roller skates. While eating, guests watch a large projection screen displaying clips of 1950s and 1960s films such as Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, Plan 9 from Outer Space, and Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. The restaurant serves traditional cuisine of the United States. Popcorn functions as a complimentary hors d'oeuvre. Initially, the menu listed items with themed names, such as "Tossed in Space" (garden salad), "The Cheesecake that Ate New York", and "Attack of the Killer Club Sandwich", but these playful names were later altered so that they now describe the dishes in a more standard and straightforward manner. In 1991, the Sci-Fi Dine-In opened along with nineteen other new Walt Disney World attractions marking the complex's twentieth anniversary. By the following year, the Sci-Fi Dine-In was serving upwards of 2,200 people daily during peak periods, making it the park's most popular restaurant. Thai movie theater operator EGV Entertainment opened the EGV Drive-in Cafe in Bangkok in 2003, in a very similar style to the Sci-Fi Dine-In.The Sci-Fi Dine-In has received mixed reviews. USA Today's list of the best restaurants in American amusement parks ranks the Sci-Fi Dine-In fifteenth, but many reviewers rate it more highly for its atmosphere than for its cuisine. Ed Bumgardner of the Winston-Salem Journal wrote that the food is more expensive than it is worth, specifically calling the restaurant's roast beef sandwich both delicious and a ripoff. In their book Vegetarian Walt Disney World and Greater Orlando, Susan Shumaker and Than Saffel call the Sci-Fi Dine-In "the wackiest dining experience in any Disney park".This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:07 UTC on Monday, 20 April 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Emma.

Travels With Randy Route 66 Episode 11 is here! Oklahoma Part 2 - Who Is The Modern Day Will Rogers? Route 66 and Round Barns The podcast hosts discussed their travels along Route 66, specifically focusing on Oklahoma and approaching Tulsa. They explored the history of round barns, with Beth explaining that the circular shape was built to withstand tornadoes and provide space for barn dances. The conversation included personal anecdotes about barn dances from Bubba's experience at University of Illinois and a discussion about Sadie Hawkins dances, with the hosts noting they would need to ask Beth about the origin of Sadie Hawkins. Route 66 Oklahoma Landmarks Discussion Bubba and Randy discussed historical landmarks along Route 66 in Oklahoma, including the Arcadia Round Barn, which was built in 1898 for tornado resistance. They explored the history of small towns along the route, including Wellston, which experienced a legal challenge due to a realignment that bypassed the town. Randy noted that while Wellston has a notable dinosaur statue, it is not on the realigned Route 66, and advised travelers not to miss any significant sights by skipping the town. Route 66 Centennial Planning Discussion The discussion focused on Route 66, with participants comparing different states' implementations of Route 66 signage and experiences. They noted Oklahoma's successful coordination through their Historical Society, while Texas was criticized for lacking consistency. The main news shared was that their podcast had received certification from the federal Route 66 Centennial Commission, allowing them to use the official Route 66 shield in their materials. They discussed creating a calendar to showcase the various events planned for Route 66's 100th anniversary and agreed to reach out to local historical societies for event information to share with their community. Photography Planning and Techniques Discussion Randy discussed plans to photograph Chandler and Davenport, mentioning a bowling alley with old gas station logos and plans to take evening shots to capture neon signs. The conversation then shifted to photography techniques, where Randy explained his practice of removing people and power lines from photos to focus on the subject. The discussion concluded with a debate about AI-generated photography and content, with both speakers agreeing that while AI can enhance photos, using it to create misleading content is problematic. Route 66 Travel Journey Discussion The discussion focused on a Route 66 travel journey, with detailed descriptions of stops including Tammy's Roundup Cafe in Davenport and the Rock Cafe in Stroud, which was inspired by the character Sally Carrera from the movie Cars. The conversation highlighted architectural features along Route 66, particularly the Googie style, and included a brief exchange about Art Deco and Streamline Modern design elements. The discussion ended with plans to continue exploring additional Route 66 locations in future episodes. Route 66 Drive-In Theater Discussion Randy discussed Oklahoma's Route 66, highlighting the state's numerous small towns and the challenges of following the original 1926 route, which is often dirt or abandoned. They described visiting a renovated drive-in theater in Sepulpa, which has been updated with Art Deco styling and offers accommodations like Airbnb trailers. Bubba shared his own memories of drive-in theaters, including seeing movies like Six Pack with Kenny Rogers and Herbie the Love Bug, and expressed interest in potentially renovating a drive-in to make it more modern and appealing to younger generations. Route 66 Museum Visit Discussion Randy shared his experience visiting the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum in Sepulpa, Oklahoma, highlighting the town's efforts to preserve its Route 66 history and charm. Sepulpa, with a population of about 23,297, is situated southwest of Tulsa and has become Randy's favorite town along the route due to its well-maintained buildings and Route 66 attractions. Bubba inquired about Sadie Hawkins, leading to an explanation of the character's origin in the comic strip "Lil Abner" and how the tradition of Sadie Hawkins dances emerged. The conversation also touched on the Joad family from "The Grapes of Wrath" and their journey along Route 66. Tulsa Route 66 Experience Randy discussed his experience traveling through Tulsa on Route 66, noting how the city maintained better historical references to the route compared to other larger towns they had visited. He highlighted the well-preserved bridge over the Arkansas River, which now serves as a walking bridge, and the Cyrus Avery Park that celebrates the "father of Route 66." Randy shared plans to share photos from their visit, including a statue depicting the transition from horse-drawn carriages to cars, which symbolized the impact of Route 66 on small towns. Route 66 Tulsa Coverage Plans The discussion focused on Route 66 travel experiences in Tulsa and upcoming coverage plans. Randy shared details about exploring different Route 66 alignments in Tulsa, recommending the modern alignment (26 to 36) for efficiency or both routes if time permits, as the alternative route creates a longer 10-15 mile loop. Key stops discussed included the Blue Whale in Catoosa (built in 1972), Claremore's connection to Will Rogers, and plans to cover Chelsea and other towns before reaching the Kansas border. Randy also mentioned plans to share photos from these locations later in the week and upcoming coverage of the White Oak to Commerce section. Travel and Podcast Discussion Randy and Bubba discussed their recent travels, particularly focusing on Randy's visit to Chelsea, Oklahoma, where he searched for a mural under a bridge but was unable to find it. They also explored the historical connections between Will Rogers and Gene Autry, and debated who might be the modern-day equivalent of Will Rogers in terms of universal appeal and talent. The conversation concluded with updates about their podcast "Travels with Randy," which now has nearly 33,000 members on Facebook, and they discussed potential future content including exploring the origin of the term "cougar."   SO. My grandfather bought a nail file in Kane, PA almost 100 years ago. I still have it...but I'd never been to Kane. Turns out I really should have! Kane, "the star in the forest," is another small central PA town that punches above its weight. There's the iconic Texas Hot Lunch (I interviewed owner Mike Bechakas, and had two of his very, very good Texas Hots), two distilleries, two wineries, a drive-in theater, a great coffee shop, a famously good butcher shop, a wonderful restaurant and a cut-above pizza place...and that's just the usual STAG stuff, there's the whole Allegheny National Forest right there!  You know I'm kind of obsessed with the whole Texas Hot/Coney Island hot dog thing. Well, to prepare for my interview with Mike, I dove deep into the internet, and found a guy who's even more obsessed...and he's gone way down that rabbit hole and come back with some great history. Check it out here! There's still mystery to it, but this answers a lot of questions.   There was so much, I did something I've never done before: I interviewed the town's mayor. Brandy Schimp is in her 9th year as mayor of Kane -- she was the Pennsylvania Mayor of the Year in 2024! -- and she did indeed have her finger on the pulse. She actually dragged in a colleague to the interview, so you get a twofer: Kate Kennedy, who's the director of the Kane Area Development Center. They're both Kane natives, and they were very fun to talk to.  I went out to the Kinzua Bridge State Park and saw the cast-down remains of the mighty railroad trestle, and the skywalk they've made of what's left. Very cool, and even though the skywalk is under renovation right now (it's going to be open for leaf-peeping in the fall), the view and the visitor center is worth a visit.   Back home, I've got a plug for Riversongs, the annual fundraiser for environmental education here in beautiful downtown Millheim. Since it is Millheim, there's live music from two bands, a raffle, and plenty of good beer. Come on out on March 29th!   What I'm Drinking Today is the incredibly crisp and refreshing Allagash House Beer, which my old friend and new book collaborator Em Sauter brought me when she visited last week to work on our new book project. The Smack Dab In The Centre segment is about the wonderfulness of hanging out by a firepit, because it's that time again! I note three Centre County spots where you can do that.  Next episode will be...something. Look, I have something really good lined up for four weeks from now, but I'm still looking for something for the next episode. I'm working on it.   So...see you in two weeks! Until then? Unable to conjure up memories for her amnesiac brother, she takes a detour to an abandoned drive-in theater. Instead of sparking any recollections, the pair encounter the character known as Axel. Quiet, meanwhile, discovers Mayhem hid in the trunk of her car hoping to enter the tournament herself. Will Quiet be able to teach her to drive? And what of the seeming reaper known as Mr. Grimm? Is he the ghost rider or is he not in his right mind? Justin tries to recall his own dim memories of playing a Twisted Metal video game. He and Erik also consider the problem of genre TV shows in comparison to Twisted Metal's episode runtimes -- 30 minutes be praised! Erik learns the truth about Marvel's Cyclops. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear as Gene and cohost Tim Swartz take a break from the paranormal and explore pop culture with Brian Walker, the creator and webmaster of Brian's Drive-In Theater, where he's been keeping memories of drive-in films and their stars alive since February 1, 1998. This episode focuses very much on "classic" B-movies, movie serials, and TV shows that focus mostly on super heroes and sci-fi. Brian's love of films began in childhood with his first Super 8mm projector given to him by his grandmother who also bought him his first film, a four-minute excerpt of a W.C. Fields comedy. Over the last 50 years, he has assembled a film collection from such genres as horror and science fiction, comedy, and action with a special emphasis on B (low budget) movies. Currently calling Morgantown, West Virginia home, Brian is fortunate to live in proximity of a number of still-operating drive-in theaters in the southwestern Pennsylvania area and loves taking his convertible to the drive-in during the warm summer months. [Editor's note: This podcast episode was recorded over the summer, before the recent hurricanes impacting areas in the southern U.S. The Archdiocese of Detroit offers its prayers for all those impacted and invites the faithful to visit catholiccharitiesusa.org to learn about ways to help.]On this episode of Cinema Verbi, Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt talk about Twisters, a standalone sequel to the 1996 summer blockbuster, Twister. The duo discusses the film's parallels to the Book of Job and the importance of looking for God in the “storms” of life and facing challenges with faith, humility, and charity. They close the episode with a game of Tempest of the Two Testaments, testing Fr. Matt's knowledge of biblical plagues, earthquakes, and whirlwinds. Editor's note: The conversation includes major spoilers from throughout the film.(0:26) Fr. Matt and Fr. Brian greet each other and share the most recent movie they've seen. Both movies are sequels: Inside Out 2 (Fr. Matt) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Fr. Brian). They note the prevalence today of remakes and sequels, with fewer original stories being told. They segue into introducing the film for this episode: Twisters, fittingly a standalone sequel to the 1996 summer blockbuster, Twister. (8:39) Fr. Brian recalls seeing the original Twister at a drive-in theater and being terrified by the scene in which a drive-in theater is destroyed by a tornado. They lay out the plot of the film, which follows a woman named Kate Cooper who is grieving the loss of her friends in a previous storm. Our hosts pause to discuss previous movies that have featured the stars of Twisters, including Clue, Home Alone 2, Titanic, and Top Gun: Maverick. (16:31) Fr. Brian points out some thematic parallels between Twisters and the Old Testament's Book of Job, with both stories raising the question of evil–or why bad things happen to good people. Fr. Brian also sees in Twisters a glimpse of the scriptural lesson to look for God even in the storms of life, learning from those experiences to help others.(21:32) Our hosts talk about how the characters in the film try to tame the tornadoes and save lives–although some have additional motivations driving their research. Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt look at the “man vs. nature” theme of the film, in which the characters learn as much as they can about the tornadoes in order to harness and control their destructive power. Finally, Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt see in Kate's reluctance to go home to Oklahoma a reflection of the theological idea of exitus et reditus, in which everything comes from God (exitus), turns away from God, and ultimately returns to God in some way (reditus).(33:03) Fr. Brian challenges Fr. Matt to a game of Tempest of the Two Testaments, quizzing him on the biblical plagues, the story of Elijah, earthquakes in the Gospel of St. Matthew, Jesus calming the storm at sea, and the storm that shipwrecked St. Paul. They then close the episode by each giving the film a “seeds of the word” rating, based on how clearly they saw goodness, truth, and beauty reflected in the story.

With a killer soundtrack and a wild set piece, it's hard not to love DEAD END DRIVE IN.  We were so excited to talk about this movie that we had to break away from our usual episode structure.  Why wait for "final questions" when we can ask throughout the episode?  We talk about unconventional workout routines, Marc's love of Pepsi (of course), the evolution of drive-in theater technology, fashion forward hairstyles and blanket issues.  This episode also holds the record for the most times we've said the word, "dystopian" in a single episode.
