Even though many people prefer to watch movies in the theater, their homes or on their phones now, a lot of people cherish the tradition of driving into a park and watching a movie on a large screen while munching on their favorite food. Drive-in theatres were popular because it was one activity the entire family could do together. Moviegoers could bring their babies, visit, and eat. Before drivein's, movie theaters didn't allow or frowned upon large families attending a movie. The drive-in was created for seniors who found it hard to comfortably sit in indoor movie theaters. Richard M. Hollingshead Jr. made a small drive-in theater for his mom in his driveway and placed a big screen in his backyard with a Kodak projector on his car. By the late '50s, more than 3,000 drive-ins could be found in the U.S. When cable TV, and VCRs became popular during the early '90s, the trend of drive-in theatres began to decline.

Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear as Gene and cohost Tim Swartz take a break from the paranormal and explore pop culture with Brian Walker, the creator and webmaster of Brian's Drive-In Theater, where he's been keeping memories of drive-in films and their stars alive since February 1, 1998. This episode focuses very much on "classic" B-movies, movie serials, and TV shows that focus mostly on super heroes and sci-fi. Brian's love of films began in childhood with his first Super 8mm projector given to him by his grandmother who also bought him his first film, a four-minute excerpt of a W.C. Fields comedy. Over the last 50 years, he has assembled a film collection from such genres as horror and science fiction, comedy, and action with a special emphasis on B (low budget) movies. Currently calling Morgantown, West Virginia home, Brian is fortunate to live in proximity of a number of still-operating drive-in theaters in the southwestern Pennsylvania area and loves taking his convertible to the drive-in during the warm summer months. At last count in 2023, there are 336 drive-in movies theaters still open in the US. Callers to Memphis Morning News discussed the demise of the drive-in theater and shared why. Movies aren't made to be shown at drive-in theaters. 4-D, high-def IMAX movies don't look as good through a bug splattered windshield at the drive-in. The movie industry makes movies with effects that are best experienced in a movie theater equipped with surround sound, lighting, seating and often wait staff. Dinner and a movie can now be easily experienced all in one location- the lazy boy equipped movie theater. The nostalgia of the drive-in movie has created a different theater industry- tourism. With some drive-in's on the National Register of Historical Places to theater's with unique twists, the drive-in movie experience has become an experience, not just a night at the movies. The tradition of going to see the latest horror film or action movie at the drive-in theater is becoming more and more scarce as drive-in theaters close around the country. The Malco Summer Drive-in has been placed on the market by the theater company stating declining attendance as the reason for considering selling the 31 acre property. Three screens, a snack bar and a 3 bedroom , 1 bath apartment are included. Ditch and Tim Van Horn spoke with Stephanie Pankey Hall on Memphis Morning News about her life growing up at the drive-in. She recalled some great memories living above the snack bar in the apartment. He dad was the manager of the property and for 15 years, that was home. Possibility, thinkers, Bible introduction and prayers. By Robert Schuler creator of the Crystal Cathedral. One thing about Robert Schuler is that he has evidence that fate works as a young man. He went to a drive-in theater and asked him if he can stand on the roof and preach on Sunday morning to the people who couldn't get out of the cars with a handicap the people that normally wouldn't go to church, and he use the speaker system of the little speakers in the 50s the on the window of the car can you imagine Church driving Theater and went to build monument after monument. He's got proof in the pudding that fate works and having goals and asking God to help you achieve those goals inspired godly goals. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fernando-m-de-oca/support
Four years ago, a project in Jackson, Mississippi, was celebrated as a beacon of Black excellence. It was meant to transform the old Golf World site in North Jackson into a thriving Black-owned drive-in movie theater and mini-golf youth complex. Unfortunately, this ambitious venture has yet to come to fruition. Today, the site remains abandoned, serving inadvertently as a dumping ground for the city's waste.

[Editor's note: This podcast episode was recorded over the summer, before the recent hurricanes impacting areas in the southern U.S. The Archdiocese of Detroit offers its prayers for all those impacted and invites the faithful to visit catholiccharitiesusa.org to learn about ways to help.]On this episode of Cinema Verbi, Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt talk about Twisters, a standalone sequel to the 1996 summer blockbuster, Twister. The duo discusses the film's parallels to the Book of Job and the importance of looking for God in the “storms” of life and facing challenges with faith, humility, and charity. They close the episode with a game of Tempest of the Two Testaments, testing Fr. Matt's knowledge of biblical plagues, earthquakes, and whirlwinds. Editor's note: The conversation includes major spoilers from throughout the film.(0:26) Fr. Matt and Fr. Brian greet each other and share the most recent movie they've seen. Both movies are sequels: Inside Out 2 (Fr. Matt) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Fr. Brian). They note the prevalence today of remakes and sequels, with fewer original stories being told. They segue into introducing the film for this episode: Twisters, fittingly a standalone sequel to the 1996 summer blockbuster, Twister. (8:39) Fr. Brian recalls seeing the original Twister at a drive-in theater and being terrified by the scene in which a drive-in theater is destroyed by a tornado. They lay out the plot of the film, which follows a woman named Kate Cooper who is grieving the loss of her friends in a previous storm. Our hosts pause to discuss previous movies that have featured the stars of Twisters, including Clue, Home Alone 2, Titanic, and Top Gun: Maverick. (16:31) Fr. Brian points out some thematic parallels between Twisters and the Old Testament's Book of Job, with both stories raising the question of evil–or why bad things happen to good people. Fr. Brian also sees in Twisters a glimpse of the scriptural lesson to look for God even in the storms of life, learning from those experiences to help others.(21:32) Our hosts talk about how the characters in the film try to tame the tornadoes and save lives–although some have additional motivations driving their research. Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt look at the “man vs. nature” theme of the film, in which the characters learn as much as they can about the tornadoes in order to harness and control their destructive power. Finally, Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt see in Kate's reluctance to go home to Oklahoma a reflection of the theological idea of exitus et reditus, in which everything comes from God (exitus), turns away from God, and ultimately returns to God in some way (reditus).(33:03) Fr. Brian challenges Fr. Matt to a game of Tempest of the Two Testaments, quizzing him on the biblical plagues, the story of Elijah, earthquakes in the Gospel of St. Matthew, Jesus calming the storm at sea, and the storm that shipwrecked St. Paul. They then close the episode by each giving the film a “seeds of the word” rating, based on how clearly they saw goodness, truth, and beauty reflected in the story.

We kick off #SCI-FI-JULY Presents: Dystopian Summer with one of the all time classic Australian dystopian action films, 1986's DEAD END DRIVE IN. Directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith and starring Ned Manning and Natalie McCurry, DEAD END DRIVE IN has everything you want from a movie set in a dystopian future - crazy car chases, crazier outfits and a drive in movie theater where you can get in, but you can't get out. With a killer soundtrack and a wild set piece, it's hard not to love DEAD END DRIVE IN. We were so excited to talk about this movie that we had to break away from our usual episode structure. Why wait for "final questions" when we can ask throughout the episode? We talk about unconventional workout routines, Marc's love of Pepsi (of course), the evolution of drive-in theater technology, fashion forward hairstyles and blanket issues. This episode also holds the record for the most times we've said the word, "dystopian" in a single episode.

The operation, given the codename OVERLORD, delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France. The beaches were given the code names UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, and SWORD. The invasion force included 7,000 ships and landing craft manned by over 195,000 naval personnel from eight allied countries. Almost 133,000 troops from the United States, the British Commonwealth, and their allies, landed on D-Day. Casualties from these countries during the landing numbered 10,300. By June 30, over 850,000 men, 148,000 vehicles, and 570,000 tons of supplies had landed on the Normandy shores. Fighting by the brave soldiers, sailors, and airmen of the allied forces western front, and Russian forces on the eastern front, led to the defeat of German Nazi forces. On May 7, 1945, German General Alfred Jodl signed an unconditional surrender at Reims, France.

The Drive-In truly never dies as this week's post-apocalypse anthology of horror occurs in the remains of a drive-in theater. Brian drops 5 tales of horror on Steve which leave him asking, "wasn't this supposed to be a punishment episode?" This movie's got it all; 16mm film with Final Cut 7 titles, goopy gloppy special effects, and critical skellymens who represent every podcast ever. Plus a surprising amount of wrestling ties in this film for the Wrestlemania holiday. We also spin the wheel for our May Showdown topics. Everyone enjoys nostalgia. This episode of The PVDcast is packed full of sentimental feelings that harken back to the year 1977. Why that specific year? Because it's the setting for guest Mike Weatherford's awesome comic, The Drive-in Kings of 1977. This comic is a tale of three high school pals, their beloved drive-in theater and one crazy intergalactic, time bending adventure! Mike shares his inspiration for the tale and details on its current Kickstarter campaign (see below). We also talk about Mike's other writings that focus on his home city of Las Vegas and Mike's career covering Vegas' entertainment news too. · Link to Mike's Kickstarter: https://tinyurl.com/566xv4n7 Don't forget to rate, review and subscribe to the show & new episodes of The PVDcast drop every Thursday!
Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present an entertaining pop culture look at "B" movies and movie serials with Brian Walker, creator and webmaster of Brian's Drive-In Theater. He's been keeping memories of drive-in films and their stars alive since February 1, 1998. His love of films began in childhood with his first Super 8mm projector given to him by his grandmother who also bought him his first film, a four-minute excerpt of a W.C. All told, this episode will provide a great look into pop culture over the decades, and its impact on society. As listeners to The Paracast know full well, the conventional memes in the UFO field about the origins and purpose of the phenomenon are infused in our culture, and sci-fi "B" movies, such as "Earth Versus the Flying Saucers," play a large part.

Charle Band's family run longtime drive-in theater turned home video business gathered a popular cult audience for its many movies that made deals with Paramount Picture's video department and other indie media ventures as well as premiering its many creative, low-brow, joyfully cheesy and sometimes surprisingly imaginative adult, mature and occasionally gory/pornographic titles on home video and on select cable channels like HBO, Cinemax and SyFy Channel. Doug Dietz (from The Good, The Bad & The Sequel Podcast) helps sum up his personal experiences and connection to Mr. Band's non-stop indie film empire, our admiration for the man and the best way to introduce newcomers to the whacky shenanigans! It's Friday and we're talking about all the local stories that grabbed our attention this week — aka, the election. Mike Johnston is officially Denver's mayor-elect, and he made a lot of promises along the campaign trail, so which ones will he keep? Plus Casa Bonita gets a write-up in a little paper called the New York Times, Governor Jared Polis vetoes a housing bill, and the last drive-in theater in the Denver metro is closing. Producer Paul Karolyi is joined by host Bree Davies and founder of investigative news outlet The Lever and Academy Award nominee David Sirota for a rundown of everything Denver's talking about. As always, stick around until the end for a round-up of the coolest events happening this weekend in the Mile High, curated by Hey Denver newsletter editor Peyton Garcia. If you haven't read the Times' take on Casa Bonita, here's a link. Paul talked about Colorado's changing drive-in movie theaters, including this one in the San Luis Valley, and predatory towing. Bree mentioned about a story from Nate Minor in Denverite about RTD's bad bus stop management. Follow our weather guy for all your weekend weather needs: Rain or Shine, it's Andy Stein! P.S.
