Cavalera is a name with its fingerprints all over the history of heavy metal, an inspiring family legacy built upon decades of musical aggression, starting all the way back in 1984 in Brazil with Sepultura.Over the last couple of years, Max and Iggor Cavalera revisited their first three releases, Morbid Visions, Bestial Devastation, and Schizophrenia, re-recording them for Nuclear Blast Records with a new level of intensity that impossibly captures the raw, youthful and trademark sounds of these iconic and pioneering releases. This month will see them bring the songs that laid the groundwork for not just their own legacy, but that of both the death and thrash metal genres, to Australia for a series of live offerings that will add yet another chapter to their non-stop commitment to extreme metal.HEAVY caught up with Max Cavalera for a chat so good we have had to split it over two weeks. In today's second chapter, Max delves into his mindset when he went into the studio to revisit music from his past, how the new versions of all three albums are an improvement on the original, his thoughts on how the albums would have been received back then had they been recorded using the knowledge and experience he has today, the emotions that pass over him every time he steps on stage, the blending of experience and youthful exuberance in Cavalera that ensures the ball keeps rolling and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

"Let me break it down for you why I say nostalgic brutality. It's because it's the closest thing you can get to 1980s Brazil extreme metal scene. Morbid Visions, Bestial devastation, Schizophrenia… it's the brutality of those records, the way they're meant to sound, the way we meant them to sound. Just like the re-recordings, except it's live. It's all real, live shit. No gimmicks. No other crap. It's plug your amp and go."In the full interview, we discuss the set list in more detail, including potential cover songs and new tracks from re-recorded albums. Max shared his emotional experience of performing alongside family members, highlighting the unique chemistry between seasoned and younger musicians, and likening their bond to a "mafia" that ensures a lasting musical legacy. He also elaborated on the motivation behind re-recording classic albums, driven by a desire to enhance sound quality while maintaining the raw essence of the originals, identifying Schizophrenia as the standout performance and Morbid Visions as his favorite for its sonic qualities.Max introduced the other members of the band besides himself and Iggor, their plans on how to re-record those three classic albums to improve on the originals, what things they focused on and more.In part 2, coming next week, we talk about his mindset going into the studio, any difficulties he may have faced, what memories revisiting the albums brought back, having his son with him for the new recordings and plenty of other stuff.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper, Mik Wanamaker and Mark Radulich present their Body Count Merciless 2024 Album Review as part of the MHOD Jukebox!Body Count is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1990. The group is fronted by Ice-T, who first established himself as a rapper but co-founded the group with lead guitarist Ernie C out of their interest in heavy metal music. Ice-T took on the role of vocalist and writing the lyrics for most of Body Count's songs, while Ernie C has been responsible for writing the group's music.Body Count's self-titled debut album was released on Sire Records in 1992, and garnered much attention due to a controversy around the song "Cop Killer". Their label, Sire Records, and their parent company, Warner Bros. Records, defended the song; however Ice-T chose to remove it from the album because he felt that the controversy had eclipsed the music itself. The group left Sire the following year, and they have since released seven more albums.Three out of the band's original seven members are deceased: D-Roc died from lymphoma, Beatmaster V from leukemia, and Mooseman in a drive-by shooting. Body Count's current lineup includes vocalist Ice-T, guitarists Ernie C and Juan Garcia, bassist Vincent Price, drummer Will "Ill Will" Dorsey Jr., and backing vocalists Sean E Sean and Little Ice (Ice-T's son). The band received its second Grammy nomination and later won the award at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021 for Best Metal Performance with their song "Bum Rush" from the album Carnivore.Merciless is the eighth studio album by American heavy metal band Body Count. It was released on November 22, 2024, via Century Media Records. Production was handled by Ice-T, Vincent Price and Will Putney. It features guest appearances from Corpsegrinder, Howard Jones, Joe Bad, and Max Cavalera.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
In the early 90s, Max Cavalera (then of Sepultura) and Alex Newport (then of Fudge Tunnel) both resided in Phoenix, Arizona. A shared admiration for each other's music led to regular hangouts and jam sessions at the Cavalera household. As avid fans of hardcore punk and industrial acts of the era, the duo blended these influences into their own raw, unconventional sound. Whereas songs written for Fudge Tunnel and Sepultura underwent intense scrutiny, this new project embraced unfiltered expression. From experimenting with samplers to smashing the occasional washing machine, no idea was too wild to explore. Cavalera and Newport, or Nailbomb, never intended for these recordings to leave the practice space. However, with some persuasion, these sessions were immortalized on the band's sole full-length release and later brought to life with a rotating lineup of friends at Dynamo Open Air the following year. Join us this week as we celebrate Nailbomb and their only release, Point Blank. This week we're tying up some loose ends by discussing Merciless, the latest album by Body Count. Led by the legendary Ice-T and high school friend Ernie C, Body Count is back with another intensely brutal thrash album. After winning a Grammy for 2020's Carnivore, Merciless shows the band as heavy and charming as ever. No ranking of Sepultura's discography would be complete without an in-depth analysis of *“Chaos A.D.”* and *“Roots,”* two albums that not only redefined Sepultura's sound but also had a profound influence on metal as a whole. They also delve into the controversial aspects of *“Roots”* and how it divided the band's fanbase at the time. Welcome back, metal maniacs! In this landmark 58th episode of the Metal Maniacs Podcast, hosts Jay Ingersoll and Modd embark on a deep dive into the career of one of the most influential and pioneering bands in metal history: Sepultura. This episode is the first of a two-part special that offers a comprehensive exploration of the band's journey from their earliest days to their groundbreaking album "Roots" and the eventual departure of frontman Max Cavalera. Our journey begins in the gritty streets of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where a group of young, passionate musicians came together to form Sepultura. We'll explore how the Cavalera brothers, Max and Igor, alongside Paulo Jr. and Jairo Guedz, channeled their love for metal into creating a band that would soon take the world by storm. Our deep dive into Sepultura's discography starts with their raw and unpolished debut album, "Morbid Visions." Released in 1986, this album showcased a band brimming with potential, even if the production quality left much to be desired. We'll discuss tracks like "Troops of Doom" and how this early work laid the groundwork for their future sound. We'll also touch upon the band's first EP, "Bestial Devastation," which shared the same raw energy and hinted at what was to come. Next, we'll move on to "Schizophrenia," released in 1987. This album marked a significant step forward in both musicianship and production quality. With the addition of Andreas Kisser on guitar, Sepultura's sound became more complex and refined. We'll break down standout tracks like "From the Past Comes the Storms" and "Escape to the Void," highlighting how the band began to develop their unique style. The 1989 release of "Beneath the Remains" saw Sepultura truly coming into their own. Produced by Scott Burns, this album was a critical and commercial success, earning praise for its tight musicianship and powerful production. We'll explore how tracks like "Inner Self" and "Stronger Than Hate" showcased the band's ability to blend aggression with melody, setting a new standard for thrash metal. Our exploration continues with "Arise," released in 1991. The success of "Arise" propelled Sepultura to international stardom, leading to extensive tours and a growing fanbase. Released in 1993, "Chaos A.D." marked a significant shift in Sepultura's sound, as they began incorporating elements of groove metal and hardcore punk. The climax of this episode is the groundbreaking "Roots," released in 1996. This album saw Sepultura embracing their Brazilian heritage, infusing traditional rhythms, instruments, and chants into their music. Not only is BILLY MILANO a blessing and “a bold, courageous man”, he's also the mastermind behind M.O.D. Max Cavaler is one of the founders of Brazilian metal heavyweights Sepultura, and after his departure in 1996 has formed multiple bands including Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy and Go Ahead And Die. Max is releasing a re-recording of the classic Sepultura album 'Schizophrenia' and we spoke with him about the early days, chasing dreams, the birth of Death/Trash, the sound of Schizophrenia, hidden gems, breaking a guitar while writing a riff, and a lot more! Interview by: Robin HignellSupport the Show.Thank you for listening! For more interviews with your favorite artists visit the FaceCulture YouTube channel.
Max Cavalera reminisces about an unforgettable experience at the Sonic Temple festival, highlighting the electrifying performances and crowd reactions that made it one of Soulfly's best shows ever. He recounts the intense energy of the crowd demanding an encore. Cavalera also shares the unique excitement of balancing small club gigs with massive festival stages, and the joy of re-recording classic Sepultura tracks with improved sound quality. Throughout, he emphasizes the raw, unfiltered passion that drives his performances and projects. Max Cavalera discusses the process of translating lyrics from Portuguese to English for his early music and its impact on the songwriting. He recalls learning English by translating Black Sabbath albums with a dictionary. Max mentions his experiences rerecording old albums like "Schizophrenia" and how these rerecordings retain some imperfections from the original. Additionally, Max talks about his ventures into the coffee business with products like Blood Brothers coffee and Soulfly Healer coffee that are produced by Concept Cafes. Mike Tonsetic from Concept Cafes discusses his unique approach to combining metal music and coffee. He emphasizes the immersive experience they aim to create, drawing inspiration from the metal scene and ensuring high-quality, specialty coffee with engaging packaging. Mike explains the collaborative process with bands to match their preferences, resulting in a product both artists and fans can enjoy. The company prioritizes ethical sourcing, working with indigenous women farmers and ensuring fair working conditions. He also highlights the health benefits of coffee, contrasting it with energy drinks and other caffeinated products. He emphasized that premium coffees like Kona and Jamaican Blue Mountain are priced high due to their rarity, not necessarily superior quality compared to Brazilian or Colombian beans. Highlighting innovation, he praised new fermentation techniques from regions like Tanzania and Colombia, which enhance coffee flavors significantly. Mike also described their unique approach of collaborating with metal bands like Cannibal Corpse, blending subcultural elements with high-quality coffee to create artist-supportive products. This strategy extends to various subcultures, aiming to offer genuine experiences and foster cross-cultural appreciation.Get your Blood Brothers and Healer Coffees at https://www.conceptcafes.com Joshua Toomey on Facebook/Twitter @talktoomeytalk Subscribe to KNOTFEST YouTube for exclusive performances & in-depth interviews with the most exciting artists in aggressive music, deep dives into iconic artists' discography, and more. Max Cavalera has been audibly pissed since the 1985 release of Sepultura's debut EP “Bestial Devastation” (and probably before). His mood has not improved in the years since. From Nailbomb to Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy to Killer Be Killed, every project the Brazilian guitarist/songwriter/shouter has been involved with has loudly had more than its fair share of vitriol. Maybe forming a band with his son would calm the 54 year old. Maybe, but then they opted to call the project Go Ahead and Die and write songs called “Truckload of Bodies.” I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Same old Discharge loving Max. Toomey and Akin start the show with an update on Akin's nerve issues. Toomey then talks about the latest website that is pulling from the podcast and how they are truly clickbait with the headlines. The guys then discuss a trend that is happening with bands not doing press and if that's the future. Akin and Toomey dive into the new Fear Factory vocalist, the talk of 300 auditions and Burton C. Bell's photographic exhibition in Ft. Lauderdale. Killswitch Engage's Adam D and Howard Jones are demoing a new project. Max Cavalera speaks on if needs a Sepultura reunion. Joshua and Chris then debate how big a true Sepultura reunion would be. The guys also discuss Max's comments on the Pantera celebration. Akin brings up the new Story Of The Year single and Toomey gives his two cetns. Toomey talks Taylor Lewan getting cut from the Tennessee Titans and Taylor's recent interview with Jeffree Star. The guys also tackled their Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL.
In another exciting episode of returning guests, today comes the underground icon, extreme metal trailblazer, third-world warrior, and leader of a diverse and dedicated tribe, Max Cavalera. We last chatted with Max on the first day of the Coronavirus pandemic. Needless to say, a lot has happened since then, and Max talks about what he has been up to. Soulfly has been in the game for 25 years and has just dropped their 12th album, “Totem,” in the summer of 2022 while receiving praise from the metal community. Max talks about taking Soulfly back on the road for their longest U.S. tour in his decorated career – spanning 57 days from January 25 to April 1. One thing that Max takes to heart is his love for underground music, and taking bands like Bodybox, Skinflint, Half Heard Voices, and Drift along on this tour is an important sign of that. Max and Soulfly are well-established, and he realizes that. Taking lesser-known, yet talented bands, on the road with him is an example of the support he has always shown since his first days in Sepultura. And now with the Soulfly lineup seemingly complete with their newest member, Mike DeLeon, it was time to finally showcase this rebirth of the band to the fans. Join us now for an in-depth conversation with one of heavy metal's most influential icons, Max Cavalera. And be sure to buy and stream their latest record, “Totem,” which is out now worldwide via Nuclear Blast Records.Stay connected with Soulfly, visit: https://www.soulfly.com/, https://www.instagram.com/thesoulflytribe/ and https://www.facebook.com/SoulflyOfficial/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/

It took 7 polls and 40 episodes but Bryan's dream finally comes to life as we review one of his favourite nu-metal albums, Sepultura's "Roots". Heading into the episode, Bryan assumed that John would hate it, but it's a surprise for John too, as he finds a lot to like on this seminal classic. We dig into it all, from the crossover with the Xavante tribe to the Brazilian musical elements to its influence on the genre of a nu-metal as a whole. Plus, we ponder whether or not Jonathan Davis is right when he said this record was a blatant rip-off of Korn, we try to determine how much producers should be allowed to make the same sounds on subsequent records, and we get into the departure of Max Cavalera from the band and wonder whether or not your wife should ever be your band's manager. Also...come on Max. This album is nu-metal. If you are also nu-metal, you should consider donating to support the show at patreon.com/thepodkast. We post three bonus episodes every single month for just $4, including last month, where we reviewed The Punisher 2004 Soundtrack with Robin Hatch. Film composer Tyler Bates is back on the show! We discuss his involvement in producing new music and touring with Jerry Cantrell, how performing again after the pandemic was a almost spiritual connection with the fanbase, recruiting the band that would perform on Jerry's new album Brighten, producing the major label debut for Starcrawler, all the details in composing the music for the Guardians of the Galaxy roller coasters, on collaborating with Chelsea Wolfe on the soundtrack to the film X, and his latest soundtrack works including Dayshift starring Jamie Foxx. Petar and Jozalyn we discuss our plans for the Psycho Las Vegas Festival this upcoming weekend, how we navigate so many bands playing on six stages, Satyr from Satyricon unwilling to apologize for Black Metal, and Max Cavalera possibly plotting an original Soulfully reunion to celebrate the debut album.
