This week we resume our chronicle of Night Demon's fall 2024 tour supporting King Diamond and Overkill. We pick up the tale with Night Demon confronting a 3,000 seat venue outside St. Louis, Missouri, with a huge stage and a massive crowd. They explain how they called an audible to include "Hallowed Ground" in the setlist tonight, and how they started changing up the set on a nightly basis thereafter. From there the tour proceeded east to a fancy theater in downtown Kansas City, where you will hear how the seated show worked to Night Demon's advantage, King Diamond the artist made it fun, and the boys ran out into the crowd to mow them down during "Night Demon."Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. NSS's musical direction is stylistically hard to pin down as he refuses to be categorized, bracketed, nailed down, pinpointed, shepherded, or grouped but one might suggest, taking a little Frank Zappa, adding a generous portion of The Allman Brother's Band, throwing in a dash of Harry Chapin then mix thoroughly with the essence of King Diamond, chill, distill through a Jean Michele Jarre filter, and serve with a slice of attitude on the side. #353- Death — Scream Bloody Gore: The Album That Created Death Metal

“Would it be fair to say that horror metal and death metal are kinda…symbiotic?”   Released May 25, 1987, SCREAM BLOODY GORE, the debut album from Florida death metal pioneers DEATH, marks a dark and transformative turning point from thrash metal into something else…something with “thrash overtones” that “sounds like thrash” but also doesn't. While it seemed to be the next logical evolutionary step for extreme metal, we weren't exactly sure what it was. It was still thrashy, yet there was a much darker presence to it than the thrash to which we were accustomed.   “They don't have the cookie monster vocals, which is kinda nice…”   As it turns out, when you mix in the violent themes of horror movies like ‘Evil Dead' with the sonic intensity of thrash metal, you end up with death metal, the genre which Chuck Schuldiner and DEATH helped establish in the mid 1980's, putting Florida on the map as the death metal capital of the world.    “They just have a sound…if you take the vocals out, you can tell it's Death.” Discover how immersion reading can make Dr. Seuss and Lord of the Rings even more compelling, always remember where you should  “NEVER put alcohol…”, and find out which song on this album was “renamed” (thanks to the PMRC) when you JOIN US (with special guest “Xander Bonerman”) as we explore the dark depths of the debut album from the band that revolutionized extreme metal by launching a brand new subgenre of horror infused thrash with DEATH and SCREAM BLOODY GORE. It was great to connect with the legendary Mikkey Dee. This guy has been the backbeat of bands from King Diamond to Don Dokken, to Motorhead, to the Scorpions. Now you can add his latest band, Lex Legion, to that list. Made up of guys he played with in King Diamond's band, Andy LaRocque, Pete Blakk, and Hal Patino, then throw in vocalist Nils K. Rue, and you've got a band that delivers heavy-hitting, old-school rock/metal.The Motorhead YearsWe talked about his time in Motorhead, which lasted 25 years. He said if Lemmy were still alive, he'd still be in that band. He compared it to a tight family unit. He also said Lem was the kind of guy to stick to his guns. "And as frustrating as that was sometimes, because he did not know everything best, you know? We were a total democracy in this band. We voted him down many times, me and Phil. I was maybe a little bit more involved with the business as well. You know, they, we all made decisions. That's, that's now where I'm trying to get, get out. But I'm actually interested in numbers and, and, you know, the business side of it. And they were just like more, oh, what the hell, you deal with it, kind of." Mikkey went on, "You know, and he, he made me look in a different angle about it. And, he was right, you know, a lot of times about this, not compromising the band or selling out. And, you know, I learned a lot from him there."Lex LegionThe new self-titled album drops on June 12th. It's short, clocking in at around 35 minutes. Mikkey said they did that so the vinyl release wouldn't sound too compressed. It consists of 9 songs.Mikkey said he enjoyed making this album. "A hundred percent, you know, because a lot of people, rightfully so, compare us now to the old Diamond Records that we did. But that's how we wrote music those days. And we continue writing this way. We are probably a nightmare for a more regular producer who will tear his or her hair off. Because why is this part over here? Why are you doing a double solo there? Or why do you have guitar harmonies after there? And it doesn't make any sense. But that's how we wrote those days. And that's the whole point of this, you know. We continue doing this on this record. It's not just verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, verse, double chorus ending."He did tell me that they're already working on the next record! "We're riffing away already. And as I said, I'll be very busy with Scorpions at least up till October. The last thing we do, as far as I know right now, is the residency in Vegas."Playing With The ScorpionsMikkey has been in the Scorpions for the better part of ten years now. They have an upcoming residency in Las Vegas coming up again this fall. "We love it. And we have so many friends in Vegas. And what a great city. Great people. Great venue." As far as the setlist for that band is concerned, he said it's close to last years celbration of the band's 60th anniversary. "But this year is an extension of last year's 60th anniversary show. And it's really, really good. I mean, we have a great 70s medley in there. And the set works really fine. Because I was asking the guys before we actually started this year, what are we going to take out? What are we going to add about rehearsal and stuff? And they said they want us to continue doing the 60th anniversary show. And it's great!"The new Lex Legion record drops on June 12th. LEX LEGION: Old School Metal Mixed With Fresh Blood

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Ali WilliamsMetal legends Andy La Rocque (King Diamond) and Nils K Rue (Pagans Mind) hooked up with HEAVY Mag's Ali Williams to chat about their new project Lex Legion and their new album. Joining La Rocque and Rue are Pete Blakk (King Diamond), Mikkey Dee (King Diamond, Scorpions, Mötorhead) and Hal Patino (King Diamond). Lex Legion's debut album is set for release on June 12, and while the band may be newly announced to the world, the machinery behind it has been grinding away for years. What began as riffs and ideas between Andy and Pete back in 2008 was left sitting in the heavy metal vault for a while, not forgotten so much as waiting for the right moment to come stomping back through the door wearing boots. That moment arrived during the pandemic, when the world had been forcibly unplugged and musicians, like the rest of us, suddenly found themselves staring at time like it was an unfamiliar household appliance. Pete started writing again, played some material for Mikkey Dee, and the wheels began turning. Mikkey heard something worth chasing, Andy was pulled back into the fold, and what had once been a half-shelved idea began growing teeth. From there, the lineup expanded with Hal Patino joining the project, before the search began for the right voice. There were names considered, big ones too, but Andy already had someone in mind. Having worked with Nils K. Rue years earlier, he knew the Pagan's Mind vocalist had the right kind of power, range and character to carry what Lex Legion were building. Mikkey agreed fairly quickly, apparently needing only to hear Nils before deciding that, yes, that was the bloke for the job. Convenient, really, when the singer turns out to be the missing piece instead of another three-month committee discussion. The result is a band that may be fresh on paper but is hardly operating on beginner settings. These are players with serious history behind them, but Lex Legion has no interest in being a nostalgia project or a backdoor continuation of King Diamond. Andy was clear that while the connection between members is obvious, the intention was never to clone the past. King Diamond is its own beast. Lex Legion, he explained, needed to be something separate. That distinction matters. The album carries the spirit of late '70s and early '80s heavy metal, the kind that still had grease under its fingernails and a pulse you could feel through the floor, but it is not trapped in a museum cabinet. Andy described the material as less complex and less progressive than some of the old King Diamond work, with more emphasis on flow, melody and straight-up heavy metal punch. In other words, it knows where it came from, but it is not standing there waving a faded flag and yelling at clouds.Lex Legion does not sound like a file-sharing experiment held together by Wi-Fi and optimism. It sounds like musicians who know each other's instincts, know when to push, and know when not to smother a song under unnecessary cleverness. The first single, Sleep Eternally, has already landed with a response that surpassed Andy's expectations, and with another single due before the album, the early signs are strong. The band is not rushing straight onto the road, though. Mikkey's commitments with Scorpions keep him busy through much of the year, so touring is more likely to become a serious discussion for next year. Importantly, Lex Legion is not being treated as a studio-only side quest. Andy made it clear that live shows are part of the plan when the timing lines up, and there are already ideas forming for a second album. Ambitious, yes. Reckless? Maybe a little. But metal has never exactly thrived on sensible office planning. As for Australia, Andy admitted he has never made it down here with King Diamond, though other members have done the trip with their respective bands. The prospect of Lex Legion eventually making their way Down Under was warmly welcomed, and judging by the appetite here for heavy metal with roots, weight and actual identity, there will be no shortage of people ready to greet them with raised horns and mildly concerning enthusiasm. Lex Legion now stand at the beginning of their own first chapter, albeit with a few veterans at the wheel and absolutely no need for learner plates. The debut album arrives June 12, Sleep Eternally is already out in the wild, and if the early reaction is anything to go by, this is not just a side project shuffling politely into the room. It is old-school heavy metal with fresh intent, built by people who know exactly what they are doing and, mercifully, are not interested in polishing all the bite out of it.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

- I LA er Rage Against The Machines single “Killing In The Name of” selve kernen af en rasende rap metal-revolution, mens Bodycount heller ikke lægger fingre imellem på deres debutalbum. - Nirvanas Dave Grohl, Kurt Cobain og Alice in Chains-sanger Layne Staley dyrker danske Mercyful Fate i stor stil.

“He's looking at me…”   Released on August 22, 1989, CLIMBIN' THE WALLS, the major label debut album from Martinsburg, West Virginia thrash metal savants WRATHCHILD AMERICA, is undoubtedly one of the most uniquely profound thrash metal albums in all of heavy metal history to be crafted by one of the most extraordinarily talented (and criminally underrated) bands in the entire genre.    And to think, for many metalheads back in the day, their very first experience with this album was in a LIVE concert setting, opening for Testament. Just imagine how blessed one would be to see a band as unbelievable as WRATHCHILD AMERICA (for the very first time) opening for an established act like Testament and being completely blown away after just one show, having NEVER heard the album before getting to see them LIVE!    “He's making eye contact…”   With a stylistic palette that blends thrash, heavy metal, and 70's classic rock, there is absolutely NO ONE else in metal who sounds ANYTHING like them. And if you're jonesing to purchase a copy of CLIMBIN' THE WALLS, not to worry, because it was recently re-released (along with their second and final album, 3-D) as part of a two-CD package with a couple of bonus tracks.    “Is he still lookin' at you?”   Get ready for a trip back through time to the days of yore, when thrash was still riding high and the opening band for Testament absolutely blew the minds of everyone in attendance when you JOIN US for one of the greatest and most underrated metal albums of all time with WRATHCHILD AMERICA: CLIMBIN' THE WALLS.   (Also, just in case you might be wondering, there's an early (we're talking “6 years ago, during the Hodges Era” early: 02/20/2020) episode appropriately dubbed WRATHSAZ, which is a combo episode featuring both WRATHCHILD AMERICA and the darker, groovier, heavier incarnation that followed, Souls At Zero.)   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on your favorite Podcast app Follow us on the Socials: Facebook - Instagram - TikTok Email: metalnerdery@gmail.com Can't be LOUD Enough Playlist on Spotify Metal Nerdery Munchies on YouTube @metalnerderypodcast Show Notes: (00:01): “See? “I don't think I'm smart enough to listen to this…”   As with the many legendary concept albums that have come before, masterpieces such as King Diamond's Abigail, Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime, and Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory, THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, the latest offering from OPETH, is one of the finest examples of storytelling ever captured in audio form and is their first proper “concept album” to date.    “They cram so much into such a small space…”   Chronicling the reading of the will of a wealthy patriarch (and featuring Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull as the patriarch in question), THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT perfectly represents the culmination of the various components that have established OPETH as a progressive metal force to be reckoned with for more than 30 years.    “I realize this is not y'all's favorite flavor of the month…”   With a seamless blending of their early progressive and melodic death metal period through their more eclectic, 70's prog rock infused progressive metal period of the 2010's, OPETH is akin to a “haunted house version of Dream Theater”, loaded with a wide  variety of sonic textures, top tier instrumental prowess, and vivid lyrical imagery, all of which are covered in a thin drapery of darkness.    “Have they ever done anything ‘hooky'?”   JOIN US as we take on what is arguably one of the finest progressive metal concept albums in existence (and most certainly a top contender for “Album Of The Year”) and quite possibly the greatest OPETH album of all time, THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on your favorite Podcast app Follow us on the Socials: Facebook - Instagram - TikTok Email: metalnerdery@gmail.com Can't be LOUD Enough Playlist on Spotify Metal Nerdery Munchies on YouTube @metalnerderypodcast Show Notes: (00:01): “I would like to take this moment to say…AND…” / #GeorgiaBulldogs / “Dangole sports ball dawgs…” / #Natty / “Speaking of Athens…my only thought was…R.E.M. must have written this song…”/ #WeBuiltThisCityASMR / “That's when they dropped the Jefferson…”/ “As long as there's a bend in the wrist, you're fine…”/ #markthetime / ***WARNING: #listenerdiscretionisadvised *** / #waitforit #markthetime / “And I screamed like a little girl…not one footstep did I hear…”/ ***WELCOME BACK TO THE METAL NERDERY PODCAST!!!*** / #strangerinthetub #jackoffhand / “Like a chimpanzee?”    (06:06): PATREON US at www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast  / “Who knows? Ian and Cass comin' at you from "the House of Pestilence" on this episode, enjoying a sick day at home with some putrefying riffage from a slate of recent releases from Imperial Triumphant, Phantom, Grave Infestation and Shattered Throne, among many more!! We'll also throw a couple colossal slabs of doom metal from local heroes Tribunal and San Fran sluggers Hell on to the fire, then get far-out with something from Vancouver-based Heavy Trip's latest album Liquid Planet, and even give you a double dose of nu metal nostalgia with the feral femmes from Kittie, in Cass' Corner! We'll also dig some Halloween favourites from Tankard, Death, King Diamond and The Misfits out of The Graveyard to celebrate the spooky season... mind the zombies. Plus, as a special addendum to the podcast, we pay tribute to another sadly departed metal legend, as The Spaceman himself, Ace Frehley left us here on Earth this past week. "Wait For Fire Burning" Formed in Oakland in 1985, Legal Reins were comprised of singer/guitarist Danny Benatar, bassist Eden Unger and drummer Tim Freund. They tore up the Bay Area scene, playing show after show and cementing themselves as one of the best live bands around. This is a band who did the work, got in the reps and eclipsed the Gladwellian idea of 10,000 hours. Opening for everyone from Madness to Killing Joke, Legal Reins proved themselves time and again that they could step on any stage and match anyone in terms of power and heart. Their exhilarating blend of sweeping pop epics and punchy hook laden rock and roll brought to mind everyone from The Sound to Echo and the Bunnymen to the Waterboys. After a bit of a bidding war, they signed to Arista in 1987, put out their debut album Please, The Pleasure soon after and then? Well, then things turned the other way. I'm going to let Tim tell you the story, but let me say this: In 1986 I was the music director of KVHS, an all-metal station located conveniently on my high school campus. I was in the habit of sneaking in The Smiths and The Chameleons in between Accept and Venom just to see if anyone noticed--they did, by the way. It was slightly terrifying to be 16 and getting death threats for not playing King Diamond, but I digress. Legal Reins called me up and they were very kind and I loved their music and one time I played them in between Y&T and Armored Saint and this one guy called up and said, very aggressively, Who was that you played after Y&T? I told him Legal Reins and he was quiet for second and then he said, That was pretty good... Beyond the Gates 2025, held from July 30 to August 2 in Bergen, Norway, was a must-visit for metal fans. This iconic festival, set across historic venues like Grieghallen and USF Verftet, delivered a killer lineup with King Diamond's first Norwegian show in 19 years, Paradise Lost, Misthyrming and more. Featuring 18 bands making their festival debut and epic sets like Gehenna's original lineup and Abbath tearing through Immortal's discography, it was a diverse celebration of black, death, and heavy metal. Fresh from Bergen, here's my review of the thirteenth edition of Norway's legendary festival.   Thumbnail credit: The ALMIGHTY Necroshorns (https://www.instagram.com/necroshorns/)

Dan Sindel is truly a “unique” and “one of a kind” artist like no other out there in music land. Dan's songwriting features a multi-layered approach to recording guitars and vocals that integrates myriads of styles and genres into a hard rocking experience streamlined for mass appeal. Unpopular Music for Popular People Vol.1 is Dan's debut (5 song) EP and features the radio friendly tracks; STEPPING STONE, RULE THE WORLD and ALL DUE REPSECT as well as two “6 minute deep cut” tracks; EDGE OF ETERNITY and SAY GOODBYE which would satisfy anyone with a love for classic rock /progressive hard rock/heavy metal with their technical rhythmic changes, orchestrated guitars and solid vocal production. The Los Angeles based singer/songwriter/guitarist takes his musical upbringing of 60's and 70's pop songs and classic rock, 80's-90's metal and all things current and mixes up slightly atypical artists (think: Alice in Chains meet The Byrds or perhaps the aggression of Metallica infused with Blue Oyster Cult, The BEATLES or ELO) to create those unique melodies and harmonies. Dan says, “To me, the best parts of a song are the hooks and melodies, whether vocal or instrumental they have to catch the listener's ear and be extraordinarily memorable.”As a survivor of the legendary 80's LA Heavy Metal scene, Dan has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the rock and metal music world (ACCEPT, SAXON, KING DIAMOND, RACER X, WENDY O. WILLIAMS, ARMORED SAINT, METAL CHURCH, FLOTSAM & JETSAM, GRIM REAPER, HED-PE, MUSHROOMHEAD and HELMET being but a few) but he'd rather not be looked at as “just a metal guy” as he refuses to be typecast and limited by musical genre.“Dan states: “It is the responsibility of a true artist to find his own voice and represent the thoughts and feelings that one has and to share it in a way that hopefully does not simply mirror someone else's work, to capture the spirit and intent of the artists vision is the essence of art itself.”Unpopular Music for Popular People Vol.1 is absolute proof that bringing influences from several different musical genres can co-exist in one finely tuned package and is available on all popular streaming platforms as well as his accompaniment videos on Youtube.APPLE MUSIC: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/dan-sindel/261257155SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/artist/12JOM4gAm4nuaXD8GXLW3xAMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/music/player/artists/B0019DMEM4/dan-sindelYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/@halipinoWWW: http://dansindel.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
