On this episode of Delivering Marketing Joy, Carolyn Koblin gives us tips for success and how to make the most of every opportunity!
In 2022 HBO picked up nearly forty Emmy awards — many of which went to The White Lotus, which airs its finale this weekend. That year also happened to be the Home Box Office's 50th birthday. John Koblin co-wrote the book It's Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO with Felix Gillette. Last winter, guest host Ilya Marritz spoke to Koblin, who covers the television industry for The New York Times, about how the network came to be a critical darling, and HBO's fraught future under its new owner, Discovery+. This is a segment from our December 9, 2022 show, Still Watching?.
John Koblin is a journalist who covers media for the New York Times. He is also the co-author of a fascinating new book on the story of HBO entitled, “It's Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO.” Join us as we do a deep dive into the origins of Home Box Office and the state of television as a result.
We all have a favorite HBO show. For most it's The Sopranos. Personally, my favorite is Tales From The Crypt and it continues to break my heart that the show is not available on HBOMax.But for all the love we have for the programming on the network, do any of us know how HBO came to be? How did it start? What were the philosophies behind programming decisions? On today's episode of Adult Education, I'm speaking with journalist and author John Koblin. He and Felix Gillette teamed up to write a book titled 'It's Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO.' This book has everything you could ever want to know about the network from its successes to its failures. I find the story to be fascinating and I hope you enjoy the conversation.
Zibby is joined by veteran media reporters Felix Gillette and John Koblin to discuss their latest book It's Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO, a fascinating exposé of HBO's meteoric ascent and now, its precarious position in the market. The three talk about how the network's innovation has helped it survive every near-fatal blow in its fifty-year history, the inspiration behind iconic series like The Sopranos, and the playbook that ensures even the strangest concepts become record-breaking, award-winning shows. They also share what their favorite HBO TV series is, and Zibby reveals she was an extra in one of them!Purchase on Amazon or Bookshop.Amazon: https://amzn.to/3fvSfCPBookshop: https://bit.ly/3TYPs49Subscribe to Zibby's weekly newsletter here.Purchase Moms Don't Have Time to Read Books merch here. With one of the wildest days we can ever recall in sports media, we invite back to the show Deadspin's John Koblin to break it all down. In the newest Awful Announcing Podcast, our guest is Deadspin media writer John Koblin. John's reporting on ESPN in the past year has been some of the finest work in the blogosphere. Last week, he was thrown into the story when an ESPN executive made a false claim about the motivations of his reporting on plagiarism at ESPN.com. We talk to John Koblin about his interaction with ESPN VP John Walsh and so much more including...-His conversation with John Walsh and reaction to being put into the story himself.-Thoughts on why it took that embarrassing episode for ESPN to finally correct the plagiarized stories.-The importance in aggressively covering ESPN and the comparison to other media beats.-The state of the Deadspin-ESPN relationship.-ESPN President John Skipper's comments about the network pulling back on its Tim Tebow coverage.-The appeal of Skip Bayless within Bristol.-Sourcing issues and controversies at ESPN.-Whether or not the journalistic questions raised in the last year will ever effect the average ESPN viewer or ESPN brand.-The modest progress ESPN has made in the last year and where the company goes from here.I know I'm supposed to say these kinds of things, but I can't recommend this podcast highly enough for fans of AA or Deadspin, those interested in the media, or sports fans.
