Jamie Howard, a man who shaped a genre of Fly-fishing films, set a mood, taught us stuff and showed us things that those who may not ever get to fish for Tarpon, Striper or Bonefish will never see. Still to this day an unmatched filmmaker as far as quality of fly-fishing footage and story telling, Jamie is best known for his iconic flyfishing movies, Chasing Silver, Location X and Andy's Return films. Recently Jamie underwent a mammoth task of documenting the migratory run of Striped Bass in his latest film "Running The Coast" that Jamie describes as his Magnum Opus. Featuring interviews with Bob Popovic, Lefty Kreh and Dave Skok to name a few as well as incredible footage of Stripe eating crab flies and wild blitzes. We chat to Jamie about his personal fishing, the fisherman he films, the birth of the location X concept, how Andy Mill got caught up in Chasing Silver, and the sheer epicenes of how Running The Coast was made as some of the highlights. For this of you who have never seen any of Jamie's work... let these two hard arsed pragmatic fisherman tell you that Jamie makes films for those that are not easily impressed... You would have to be made of stone not to want to sell everything and fish forever after watching these films. Checkout HowardFilms.com and do your self a favour instead of watching the bloody masked singer garbage. This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly, Power Pole and Beast Brushes

David Mangum is unquestionably one of the most highly exposed tarpon guides there is. His early notoriety came with a film shot by Howard films titled “Location X,” located somewhere in the Apalachicola region of the Florida Panhandle. The darker water and monster fish that swim there are much more prone to eat a fly, creating the opportunity for some highly energetic footage. It was an eye opener. Many locals already knew about what was going on in the Panhandle, but now there was a movie. Then in 2017, Yeti produced a short tarpon film, “120 days,” which represented David Mangum's tarpon season that rocked the house. Shot in black and white, it was electric and it went viral. It's an incredible look into a sport and a fish we love, and a man that has refined his craft. But the words I heard expressed, and the way he caught his fish raised a red flag that made me take a closer look. I knew our paths had to cross at some point. Then, I met David in the Florida Keys while we were both filming separate TV shows with Jared Raskob. David was awesome, funny, effervescent and engaging, but I held my questions that I hoped one day would be answered. On this podcast, we tread into some deeper water with Mangum and talked about some very important topics including: passion, legacy, ethics, and spot ownership. He was articulate about our differences and cared about how he would be heard, everything we'd hoped for! Thank you so much for coming on, David!
Alun R facilitates the 4th of four sessions of his own supernatural thriller game, Against the Dark Conspiracy. This session was organsied as part of The Gauntlet RPG Community's monthly calendar of games (www.gauntlet-rpg.com). They know where the Throndal monster is; and they have the leverage they need ... so Dylan visits its hunting lodge ... alone. Meanwhile, Mia loads a van with (a lot of) C4, while Timothy and Anton move into position at Location X with their sights on Location Y. There's a convincing lie about a planned ambush that Throndal can forestall ... if only he gets to Location Y ... NOW! His thrall bodyguard fails to see what's coming and his protection squad deploy perfectly into the path of a speeding van. Then ... the pre-dawn filled with the smell of burning petrol, and flying lead, as Conspiracy pawns are torn to shreds; a thrall faced with diverse threats and unable to focus on one of them; and a vampire confused by what is happening as an invocation binds it to the place it will reach the end of 200 years of un-life with a warning 'Now she will succeed. No one will be able to stop her now!' ...
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The rationalist community's location problem, published by mingyuan on the LessWrong. The Problem Basically ever since the first rationalists settled in Berkeley, people have been saying, “Why do you live in Berkeley, Berkeley sucks! You should all move to Location X instead, it's so much better.” The problem has always been that no one agrees on what Location X is. Some common candidates for Location X: A smaller, cheaper, friendlier US city NYC Australia Canada Somewhere with very low cost of living (often in Southeast Asia or Latin America) London Oxford Blackpool Prague A castle A private island and of course Wherever the speaker is from In the past I've brushed off all such suggestions, because it was just too hard a coordination problem to get multiple hundreds of rationalists to leave Berkeley, where they've gotten jobs, rented or even bought houses, established organizations, enrolled in schools, and established social circles. But we're in a unique time! Due to the pandemic, there's far less reason to stay in any one place - work and school are remote, expensive leases can be terminated, and you can't see your friends anyway. Most of the rationalist houses I know have moved or dissolved, and the former Berkeley rationalists are flung across all corners of the globe (yeah I know globes don't have corners). A fair number of us have stayed, but I think for most of us it's just because our friends are here, we're hoping that someday the rest of our friends come back, and we're not sure where else to go. So, if ever there were a time when we actually had the chance to move the physical locus of the rationalist community, it's now. Below, I'll lay out what I believe to be some of the most important general considerations for deciding on a new location. I encourage people to make their case for a specific location, either in comments or in their own posts. (Looking at you, Mikk!) Considerations for Location X Potential dealbreakers Visas In order to settle in a location, you have to be able to legally live there long-term. Most Berkeley rationalists are US citizens, and those who aren't have already paid the steep cost of acquiring US visas and learning US immigration law. This feels like a strong argument in favor of staying in the US somewhere, although it's possible there are places where this wouldn't actually be that much of an issue. In any case, it's certainly an argument against countries with strict immigration laws, like Switzerland. Relatedly, organizations such as MIRI, CFAR, Open Phil, BERI, etc are registered in the US. I don't know how hard it would be for them to operate elsewhere and am unfamiliar with this domain in general. Language Given that basically all rationalists speak English (since it's pretty hard to read the relevant material otherwise), we should settle somewhere English-speaking; it would be very costly if everyone had to deal with a language barrier every single day (or learn a new language). Notably this doesn't automatically disqualify all locations in e.g. continental Europe - Habryka points out that you can get along just fine in Berlin if you only know English. But somewhere like e.g. Japan looks like a much worse prospect on this metric. National political environment / culture The rationality community often attracts controversy, so it's important that we settle somewhere that protects freedom of thought and speech, and is generally friendly to weird ideas. We should definitely not move somewhere where political dissidents can be abducted willy nilly. Some people are worried about unrest in the US, which might be reasonable, but on that metric it's still better to live here than, say, Mali or Afghanistan. Local political environment / culture Same basic considerations as the above. California may be an increasingly hostile en...
On this weeks episode, we get out of our comfort zone. We travel to Location X with Josh Barfield. Josh is a machine of a surf fisherman. Just watch his cast and you'll know he's the real deal. We were also joined on the sand by Hero Joe. Somewhat of a local legend, Joe regaled us with stories and is one of the fishiest dudes we've encountered. This 'sode takes place on the beach and in the suds so, a soothing reel of breakers on sand abounds. We hope you'll enjoy this sport we love from a different perspective. :)
Rachel Seery and Jane Murphy are 2nd year UCC students, who went to school in Blackwater Community College in Lismore. This year they are taking part in Ireland's Largest Student Fundraiser, Jailbreak, a 36-hour global challenge to raise vital funds for the Society of St Vincent de Paul and Amnesty International Ireland. The race begins at Dublin Castle on the morning of Saturday 22nd February 2020 as students dart from the start-line in a race to a mystery Location X. Following clues which are revealed to the team throughout the day, teams of two trek across Europe. But there's a catch! The teams are not allowed to spend any of their own money on travel and must rely only on the goodwill of strangers to help them get to Location X before the 36 hours are up!
Jailbreak is Ireland’s largest student-run fundraiser, now entering its 7th year, with all proceeds split between Amnesty International and Saint Vincent de Paul. During Jailbreak, teams of 2 have 36 hours to escape the starting point in Dublin and race toward ‘Location X,’ which is revealed over the course of the competition with the help of several clues.
