Why Federal Reserve and Freddie/Fannie Manipulation Are the Source of Inflation | 5/29/25

We're at another crossroads. There is a growing sense on the Right that we have not solved the inflation and deportation issues. The question is will we make the right plays to achieve them. This begins with a recognition that unless we ignore the courts or strip their jurisdiction in must-pass legislation, this presidency is doomed. Next, we're joined by Alex Pollock, a banking expert at the Mises Institute, who warns that not only have we failed to solve inflation, but some of the current proposals from both parties will further exacerbate it. He explains how the Federal Reserve keeps a Ponzi scheme paid for by consumers in the form of high prices. He also believes that the Fed is fully controlled by Congress and not independent. Relatedly, Pollock believes that complaining about interest rates is addressing the symptom of the very problems created by the "easy money" cartel. Also, he believes it is a mistake to turn Freddie and Fannie back into venture socialist GSE status, which allows for crony private profit off the risk of taxpayers. More easy money and subsidized credit are what got us here; they sure won't solve inflation.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We begin with a report from Trump's visit to House Republicans regarding budget reconciliation. Trump continues to lash out at conservatives, as we incur all the liabilities of populism but receive none of the benefits. Relatedly, we're joined by Kevin Lynn, executive director of the Institute for Sound Public Policy, who is sounding the alarm that nothing seems to be changing regarding student and worker visas. Trump has just approved a new batch of 120,000 H-1B visas without even instituting the reforms from his first term. Lynn goes through the data on how the tech labor market is in the trash, yet the forces of collusive nepotism are trying to leave no job for Americans. We cover many aspects of this collusive nepotism and how it has bled into Trump donors and advisers. We need a course correction fast, because Trump has the full legal authority to institute these reforms without Congress. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Either Trump ignores the courts, or his presidency will end in failure. It's that simple. Today, I go through a litany of immigration cases to show how far the Overton window has moved in the courts. So even if the Supreme Court magnanimously walks back a few of the rulings, we will still be playing behind par. Also, once again, the Supreme Court appears to be ready to overturn the conservative Fifth Circuit on a health care case, but not overturn liberal circuits. Finally, I discuss the lack of a plan to fortify red states against the hell that is coming our way. RINOs are blocking everything DeSantis wants to do in that regard. Relatedly, I discuss how marijuana is destroying everything in its path and how it's disgusting that most Republicans refuse to block it in red states. Learn more about your ad choices. Hello out there Sandwich Artists! Quick announcement here from Amanda at Poirot Pod. We are delighted to see that people are still following us after our long hiatus! We wanted to let you know the book we are reading next is“They Came to Baghdad,” in case you want to read it along with us before we release that episode,  which we anticipate to be somewhere between 3 and 53 weeks from now.  (I just started it and am really enjoying it! ) Shout out to the request for the next book announcement from Selçuk in 2023. You ask, and 2 years later, PoirotPod, sort of, delivers. We do hope to remember to announce the next book at the end of each episode as well as remember to complete the Portia scale, but no promises, as you see how minimally functional we have become in the middle of the night recording these days. Relatedly, you'll be able to rely on continued butchered pronunciation, Selçuk, which I do hope I'm not doing terribly badly at this moment to your name. Special sandwich artist shout out to Trey, Selçuk, Alejandro, Chawna, Kat, Science Teacher, Aisha, and the various scammy porn bot accounts that have reached out to our email. We diligently check that account every 9 to 24 months, and are legit so happy to see your emails! Side note, I am desperately missing the original royalty free intro music we used, so if anyone out there is fluent in Riverside, which is the new app where the corporate monsters have moved us to these days, and knows how to fix it, please let us know! Yours in crime, PoirotPod!

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. NY correspondent Luke Tress joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's Daily Briefing. Columbia University has agreed to a series of changes demanded by the Trump Administration as a precondition for restoring $400 million in federal funding the government pulled this month over the school’s handling of antisemitism on campus amid pro-Palestinian protests against Israel. Tress has been covering the anti-Israel protests that have erupted since October 7, 2023, when Hamas slaughtered 1,200 in southern Israel. We speak about new measures that Columbia is taking — especially the restriction of face masks — and discuss whether they will change the intensity of the protests. Relatedly, on Friday, detained Columbia University student activist Mahmoud Khalil appeared briefly in immigration court at a remote Louisiana detention center as his lawyers fight in multiple venues to try to free him. We discuss the continued debate within the Jewish community over immigration rights and free speech, versus the safety of Jewish students on campus. Finally, we speak about a trend among US Jews who are looking for increased self-protection through a variety of measures, including taking self-defense courses such as the Israeli martial art, Krav Maga, or, as in a piece we recently published, highly trained -- and highly expensive -- protection dogs. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (03/14/2025): 3:05pm- Earlier this week, the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to fund the government through September. The Senate will consider the CR Friday afternoon. After initially telling reporters that Democrats would not help Republicans overcome the 60-vote filibuster threshold, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he will vote in favor of cloture to prevent the government from shutting down at midnight on Friday. House Democrats are decrying Sen. Schumer's decision—with rumors swirling that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may be considering a primary challenge. Sen. Schumer is up for re-election in 2028. 3:10pm- Will the Senate vote in favor of funding the government through September? According to Politico, a government shutdown may be in the Trump Administration's best interest—as the Attorney General and Office of Management of Budget will determine what federal activities are essential based on guidance that dates back to the Carter Administration. This would allow for DOGE to slash the size of government with even greater ease. 3:30pm- Speaking from the Justice Department in Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump condemned the DOJ's past weaponization—which he noted targeted him and other individuals deemed to be political rivals by the law enforcement agency. Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, bringing with him a host of healthcare nominees and potential changes to the FDA, M&A and drug pricing. The new administration was a key focus point at the 2025 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference last week, where Annalee Armstrong spoke to executives from several companies about what they're expecting from a second Trump term. Also at JPM, Mirador Therapeutics CEO Mark McKenna boldly predicted that 2025 would see the return of the megamerger. Speaking of M&A, Annalee spoke with leaders from Biogen, who declined to address the company's unsolicited takeover bid for Sage Therapeutics. For its part, Sage sued Biogen last week, “seeking preliminary injunctive relief to enforce a standstill agreement.” Meanwhile, Gilead CEO Daniel O'Day addressed the split of Galapagos—a company Gilead has poured more than $5 billion into since 2019. Check out more personal stories from JPM here. In the obesity space, Novo Nordisk reported data from a Phase III trial showing that a high dose of Wegovy elicited more weight loss than the approved regimen—but still fell short of results posted by Eli Lilly's Zepbound. Relatedly, Wegovy and sister drug Ozempic are both on the list of the next fifteen drugs whose prices could be negotiated under the Inflation Reduction Act. Finally, the FDA on Friday made its first high-profile decision of the year, greenlighting AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo's Dato-DXd—now Datroway—to treat certain types of advanced breast cancer. The approval is the first for the highly touted antibody-drug conjugate, which is also under FDA review for EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cacner. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Nathan J. Robinson, editor-in-chief of Current Affairs, to discuss his recent book The Myth of American Idealism: How U.S. Foreign Policy Endangers the World, co-authored with Noam Chomsky. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Mike Johnson's successful speakership vote, Pete Hegseth's nomination to Secretary of Defence, Biden's Offshore drilling order, NYC's congestion pricing, the Social Security Fairness Act, CFPB action, Biden's arms sales to Israel, the Washington Post's turmoil, and Musk's promise to brighten Twitter's algorithm heading into a second Trump presidency, before diving a little deeper into Rep. Johnson leadership in Congress. Nathan J. Robinson then joins, diving right into Chomsky's assessment of the rhetoric and justifications around US Foreign Policy among the political and media classes, which tend to lie on the spectrum of “the US is never wrong” to the idea of “noble mistake theory” which constantly seeks to justify US misdeeds behind supposedly moral causes, bringing Robinson to the meat of the discussion: the idea of Chomsky's “Mafia Doctrine” which posits that the exclusive internal consideration behind US Foreign Policy is the maintenance and expansion of US hegemony. Stepping back, Robinson walks through various examples from the post-WWII era of US hegemony, from their indifference to Kuwait's independence to their insistence on sticking in long-term losing wars (Vietnam, Iraq) to avoid losing face, with a particular dive into the diplomatic malpractice that led us into the Gulf War. After expanding on the concept of “US Interests” and the deep divide between the various interests that make up the US, Nathan, Sam, and Emma unpack the US' refusal to attempt any semblance of self-analysis, refusing to acknowledge how their maneuvers on the global stage put their “adversaries” in a precarious position while insisting on interpreting every move said adversaries take in response as directly offensive, before wrapping up the show with a discussion on the importance of engaged anti-war and anti-imperialist movements on the domestic level to achieve any semblance of pushback to this way of thinking. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma listen to Lindsay Graham's plea to rush Trump's cabinet confirmations, Tulsi Gabbard shows off her ability to praise cult leaders, and an UNRWA Officer gives her detailed account on the ongoing devastation facing Gaza in 2025. Relatedly, Blinken gives a vociferous defense of Israel, and an Israeli settler gives a vociferous defense of treating Palestinians as animals. The MR Crew also checks in on the DNC-sanctioned “influencer” class, Varat from Chicago checks in on Tim Pool's emotional stability, and Pat from New Jersey Checks in on Congestion pricing. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic reporter Lazar Berman joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. This morning, the Foreign Ministry officially informed the United Nations that Israel is withdrawing from the 1967 agreement recognizing the Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA after the Knesset passed legislation to severely limit the operations of the agency in Israel and in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. We hear about practical implications. A round of talks between Hamas and Fatah officials in Cairo ended with an agreement to establish a technocratic committee composed of independent Palestinian figures to manage the Gaza Strip, according to an unnamed Hamas source quoted by the Qatari-owned paper Al-Araby al-Jadeed. Berman weighs in on the chances of this agreement coming to fruition. Eli Feldstein, a spokesperson working with the Prime Minister's Office, is accused of divulging top-secret information with national security implications to European media outlets, according to a ruling published Sunday evening by Rishon Lezion Magistrate Court head Menahem Mizrahi. The names of three other suspects remain gagged by the court, but it confirmed that they were connected to the defense establishment. Berman examines what we know about the case and how serious the charges are. Touring the northern border on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that whether via a negotiated settlement or military force, Israel will achieve the conditions it needs to restore security to the area and keep the Hezbollah terror group at bay. Relatedly, we're hearing that Iran's president said a potential ceasefire between Israel and its allies Hamas and Hezbollah “could affect the intensity” of Tehran's threatened attack. Could this added pressure see a ceasefire agreement solidify? For news updates, please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. This is: How I got 3.2 million Youtube views without making a single video, published by Closed Limelike Curves on September 3, 2024 on LessWrong. Just over a month ago, I wrote this. The Wikipedia articles on the VNM theorem, Dutch Book arguments, money pump, Decision Theory, Rational Choice Theory, etc. are all a horrific mess. They're also completely disjoint, without any kind of Wikiproject or wikiboxes for tying together all the articles on rational choice. It's worth noting that Wikipedia is the place where you - yes, you! - can actually have some kind of impact on public discourse, education, or policy. There is just no other place you can get so many views with so little barrier to entry. A typical Wikipedia article will get more hits in a day than all of your LessWrong blog posts have gotten across your entire life, unless you're @Eliezer Yudkowsky. I'm not sure if we actually "failed" to raise the sanity waterline, like people sometimes say, or if we just didn't even try. Given even some very basic low-hanging fruit interventions like "write a couple good Wikipedia articles" still haven't been done 15 years later, I'm leaning towards the latter. edit me senpai EDIT: Discord to discuss editing here. An update on this. I've been working on Wikipedia articles for just a few months, and Veritasium just put a video out on Arrow's impossibility theorem - which is almost completely based on my Wikipedia article on Arrow's impossibility theorem! Lots of lines and the whole structure/outline of the video are taken almost verbatim from what I wrote. I think there's a pretty clear reason for this: I recently rewrote the entire article to make it easy-to-read and focus heavily on the most important points. Relatedly, if anyone else knows any educational YouTubers like CGPGrey, Veritasium, Kurzgesagt, or whatever - please let me know! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Vida Plena's 2023 Impact Report: Measuring Progress and Looking Ahead, published by Vida Plena on July 23, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. We from Vida Plena are proud to present our first Annual Impact Report. 2023 was our first full year. It was a year of learning. We had just finished a successful pilot and started the year with the mission of building a solid foundation and proving that our therapy model works at scale. This first annual impact report is our attempt to capture through charts and graphs bits of crucial evidence about who we've helped in 2023 and where we can continue to improve. Background Context Vida Plena (meaning 'a flourishing life' in Spanish) is a nonprofit organization based in Quito, Ecuador which launched in 2022 (see our launch post here). Our mission is to build strong mental health in low-income and refugee communities, who otherwise would have no access to care. We provide evidence-based depression treatment using group interpersonal therapy, which is highly cost-effective and scalable. Main Findings Our main findings during the process of creating this report were: In 2023, we screened 882 people for depression. 434 (49%) of these became participants, taking at least 1 group session. Program participants had an average reduction of 6.6 in the PHQ-9 questionnaire. 68% of participants with moderate to severe depression clinically improved (5 points drop in PHQ-9). Five points are considered to be a clinically significant improvement. We also saw reductions in secondary indicators of self-harm thoughts and suicidal ideation, anxiety, psychosocial functioning, and employment. Participants who fill out our end-line survey also report high satisfaction with the program and increased feelings of hope and purpose. 90% of participants came from vulnerable groups, the most common of which were people experiencing food insecurity (56%), female heads of households (34%), and migrants and refugees (22%). Participant recovery seems to be related mostly to the baseline level of depression and not so much to the number of sessions taken or other variables like the modality of the sessions (virtual or in person). Challenges While we are excited with these results, there are many challenges and areas we still feel we need to improve. In particular: Even though 5 points is considered to be a clinically significant change on the PHQ-9 scale, the 6.6-point drop is still below our more ambitious target. In 2024, we aim to improve this margin to nine points across participants entering with moderate to severe depression. Relatedly, we aim to improve our participant retention rate. Our initial findings suggest that participants may drop out when they start feeling better. We believe there is room for them to continue improving and learning important skills to enhance their resilience and strengthen their support network if they attend more therapy sessions. Limitations We are also aware that this first report has limitations. First, we rely basically on pre-post participant comparisons, with no randomized control group. We try to partially compensate for this fact by considering spontaneous remission data from the scientific literature. However, our priority in the coming years is to implement control groups where people who are not involved in Vida Plena g-IPT sessions take PHQ-9 assessments over eight weeks to determine our population's spontaneous remission rates. Secondly, some of the data we collect is likely subject to multiple biases. For example, the program satisfaction data we have, as well as many secondary indicators, come from people who take the end-line survey by the end of their 8th group session. People who get so far into the program without dropping out are likely the ones who saw the most value in it, and this can skew our conclus...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: What progress have we made on automated auditing?, published by Lawrence Chan on July 6, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. One use case for model internals work is to perform automated auditing of models: https://www.alignmentforum.org/posts/cQwT8asti3kyA62zc/automating-auditing-an-ambitious-concrete-technical-research That is, given a specification of intended behavior, the attacker produces a model that doesn't satisfy the spec, and the auditor needs to determine how the model doesn't satisfy the spec. This is closely related to static backdoor detection: given a model M, determine if there exists a backdoor function that, for any input, transforms that input to one where M has different behavior.[1] There's some theoretical work (Goldwasser et al. 2022) arguing that for some model classes, static backdoor detection is impossible even given white-box model access -- specifically, they prove their results for random feature regression and (the very similar setting) of wide 1-layer ReLU networks. Relatedly, there's been some work looking at provably bounding model performance (Gross et al. 2024) -- if this succeeds on "real" models and "real" specification, then this would solve the automated auditing game. But the results so far are on toy transformers, and are quite weak in general (in part because the task is so difficult).[2] Probably the most relevant work is Halawi et al. 2024's Covert Malicious Finetuning (CMFT), where they demonstrate that it's possible to use finetuning to insert jailbreaks and extract harmful work, in ways that are hard to detect with ordinary harmlessness classifiers.[3] As this is machine learning, just because something is impossible in theory and difficult on toy models doesn't mean we can't do this in practice. It seems plausible to me that we've demonstrated non-zero empirical results in terms of automatically auditing model internals. So I'm curious: how much progress have we made on automated auditing empirically? What work exists in this area? What does the state-of-the-art in automated editing look like? 1. ^ Note that I'm not asking about mechanistically anomaly detection/dynamic backdoor detection; I'm aware that it's pretty easy to distinguish if a particular example is backdoored using baseline techniques like "fit a Gaussian density on activations and look at the log prob of the activations on each input" or "fit a linear probe on a handful of examples using logistic regression". 2. ^ I'm also aware of some of the work in the trojan detection space, including 2023 Trojan detection contest, where performance on extracting embedded triggers was little better than chance. 3. ^ That being said, it's plausible that dynamically detecting them given model internals is very easy. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Farmed animals are neglected, published by Vasco Grilo on June 24, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary Farmed cows and pigs account for a tiny fraction of the disability of the farmed animals I analysed. The annual disability of farmed animals is much larger than that of humans, even under the arguably very optimistic assumption of all farmed animals having neutral lives. The annual funding helping farmed animals is much smaller than that helping humans. Introduction I think one should decide on which areas and interventions to fund overwhelmingly based on (marginal) cost-effectiveness, as GiveWell does. Relatedly, I estimated corporate campaigns for chicken welfare, like the ones supported by The Humane League (THL), have a cost-effectiveness of 14.3 DALY/$, 1.44 k times that of GiveWell's top charities. However, for communication purposes, I believe it is fine to look into the benefits of fully solving a problem as well as philanthropic spending. Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) has a great graph highlighting the neglectedness of farmed animals in the United States relative to their scale. In this post, I estimate the annual disability of and philanthropic spending on humans and farmed animals, both globally and in China[1]. The data and calculations are in this Sheet. Methods I got the annual disability of each group of farmed animals multiplying its population by its disability per living time in (human) years lived with disability (YLD) per animal-year[2], which I calculated from (1 - "welfare per time as a fraction of that of a fully healthy human as a fraction of the welfare range (normalised welfare per time)")*"welfare range". For a normalised welfare per time equal to: 0, corresponding to a neutral life, the disabilty per living time is equal to the welfare range, which makes sense. By definition, a dying human has a disability per living time of 1 YLD/year (which is equal to the welfare range of humans of 1), and a welfare per time of 0. 1, respecting a fully healthy farmed animal, the disability per living time is 0, which checks out. By definition, a fully healthy human has a disability per living time of 0, and it is natural to extend this to farmed animals. In agreement with the above, disability throughout this post refers to the potential for increasing ( affective) welfare up to the level of a fully healthy being. In contrast, the global burden of disease study ( GBD) focuses on actual disability. For simplicity, I did not consider years of life lost ( YLL). I would have to figure out the life expectancy as a function of age for farmed animals living in ideal conditions, as GBD uses a reference life expectancy for ideal human conditions. A "reference life table, or theoretical minimum risk life table (TMRLT), is used in GBD to calculate years of life lost (YLLs) due to premature mortality. It was constructed based on the lowest observed age-specific mortality rates by location and sex across all estimation years from all locations with populations over 5 million in 2016". I used Rethink Priorities' median welfare ranges. I relied on the value for pigs for cows, the mean between the values for carp and salmon for fish, and the value for black soldier flies for insects. To find the normalised welfare per time of farmed broilers, hens and decapod shrimp, I assumed: The time that farmed broilers, hens and decapod shrimp on ongrowing farms experience each of the 4 pain categories defined by the Welfare Footprint Project (WFP). I also supposed all broilers are in a conventional scenario, and that hens are in conventional cages or cage-free aviaries, using data from WFP to find the respective fractions. Excruciating pain is 1 k times as bad as disabling pain[3]. Disabling pain is 100 times as bad as hurtful pain. Hurtful pain is 10 times as bad as...

To be clear, she was only representing her own views on the episode. Some key takeaways/thoughts from Alyona's point of view:?Controversial? People keep coming up with simple phrasing and a few sentences about where to focus in data mesh. But if you're headed in the right direction, data mesh will be hard, it's a big change. You might want things to be simple but simplistic answers aren't really going to lead to lasting, high-value change to the way your org does data. Be prepared to put in the effort to make mesh a success at your organization, not a few magic answers.!Controversial! Stop focusing so much on the data work as the point. It's a way to derive and deliver value but the data work isn't the value itself. Relatedly, ask what are the key decisions people need to make and what is currently preventing them from making those decisions. Those are likely to be your best use cases. When it comes to Zhamak's data mesh book, it needs to be used as a source of inspiration instead of trying to use it as a manual. Large concepts like data mesh cannot be copy/paste, they must be adapted to your organization. It's really important to understand your internal data flows. Many people inside organizations - especially the data people - think they know the way data flows across the organization, especially for key use cases. But when you dig in, they don't. Those are some key places to deeply investigate first to add value. On centralization versus decentralization, it's better to think of each decision as a slider rather than one or the other. You need to find your balances and also it's okay to take your time as you shift more towards decentralization for many aspects. Change management is best done incrementally. ?Controversial? A major misunderstanding of data mesh that some long-time data people have is that it is just sticking a better self-serve consumption...

We begin with a review of last night's primaries by contrasting the success of the liberal base within its primaries to the failure in ours. Progressives have a movement and we don't because they actually believe in what they espouse. Relatedly, I'm joined by Joy Pullmann, executive editor of the Federalist, for her expert take on why Republican households are raising Democrat daughters. She explains how transgendersim is really a grandchild of feminism and how even conservative households expose their daughters to environments dominated by the brainwashing of masculine energy to stifle all things feminine. We touch on how society measures the value of women based on male metrics in a way that destroys nurturing capabilities in girls. This is the antecedent to every economic and social problem. She offers some advice on how husbands and fathers can raise a generation of feminine women who rebuild our broken civilization.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How to do conceptual research: Case study interview with Caspar Oesterheld, published by Chi Nguyen on May 14, 2024 on LessWrong. Caspar Oesterheld came up with two of the most important concepts in my field of work: Evidential Cooperation in Large Worlds and Safe Pareto Improvements. He also came up with a potential implementation of evidential decision theory in boundedly rational agents called decision auctions, wrote a comprehensive review of anthropics and how it interacts with decision theory which most of my anthropics discussions built on, and independently decided to work on AI some time late 2009 or early 2010. Needless to say, I have a lot of respect for Caspar's work. I've often felt very confused about what to do in my attempts at conceptual research, so I decided to ask Caspar how he did his research. Below is my writeup from the resulting conversation. How Caspar came up with surrogate goals The process Caspar had spent six months FTE thinking about a specific bargaining problem between two factions with access to powerful AI, spread over two years. A lot of the time was spent on specific somewhat narrow research projects, e.g. modelling the impact of moral advocacy in China on which bargaining problems we'll realistically encounter in the future. At the time, he thought those particular projects were important although he maybe already had a hunch that he wouldn't think so anymore ten years down the line. At the same time, he also spent some time on most days thinking about bargaining problems on a relatively high level, either in discussions or on walks. This made up some double digit percentage of his time spent researching bargaining problems. Caspar came up with the idea of surrogate goals during a conversation with Tobias Baumann. Caspar describes the conversation leading up to the surrogate goal idea as "going down the usual loops of reasoning about bargaining" where you consider just building values into your AI that have properties that are strategically advantaged in bargaining but then worrying that this is just another form of aggressive bargaining. The key insight was to go "Wait, maybe there's a way to make it not so bad for the other side." Hence, counterpart-friendly utility function modifications were born which later on turned into surrogate goals. Once he had the core idea of surrogate goals, he spent some time trying to figure out what the general principle behind "this one weird trick" he found was. Thus, with Vincent Conitzer as his co-author, his SPI paper was created and he continues trying to answer this question now. Caspar's reflections on what was important during the process He thinks it was important to just have spent a ton of time, in his case six months FTE, on the research area. This helps with building useful heuristics. It's hard or impossible and probably fruitless to just think about a research area on an extremely high level. "You have to pass the time somehow." His particular projects, for example researching moral advocacy in China, served as a way of "passing the time" so to say. At the same time, he thinks it is both very motivationally hard and perhaps not very sensible to work on something that's in the roughly right research area where you really can't see a direct impact case. You can end up wasting a bunch of time grinding out technical questions that have nothing much to do with anything. Relatedly, he thinks it was really important that he continued doing some high-level thinking about bargaining alongside his more narrow projects. He describes a common dynamic in high-level thinking: Often you get stuck on something that's conceptually tricky and just go through the same reasoning loops over and over again, spread over days, weeks, months, or years. You usually start entering the loop because you think...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Should we break up Google DeepMind?, published by Hauke Hillebrandt on April 23, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Regulators should review the 2014 DeepMind acquisition. When Google bought DeepMind in 2014, no regulator, not the FTC, not the EC's DG COMP, nor the CMA, scrutinized the impact. Why? AI startups have high value but low revenues. And so they avoid regulation (and tax, see below). Buying start-ups with low revenues flies under the thresholds of EU merger regulation[1] or the CMA's 'turnover test' (despite it being a 'relevant enterprise' under the National Security and Investment Act). In 2020, the FTC ordered Big Tech to provide info on M&A from 2010-2019 that it didn't report (UK regulators should urgently do so as well given that their retrospective powers might only be 10 years).[2] Regulators should also review the 2023 Google-DeepMind internal merger. DeepMind and Google Brain are key players in AI. In 2023, they merged into Google DeepMind. This compromises independence, reduces competition for AI talent and resources, and limits alternatives for collaboration partners. Though they are both part of Google, regulators can scrutinize this, regardless of corporate structure. For instance, UK regulators have intervened in M&A of enterprises already under common ownership - especially in Tech (cf UK regulators ordered FB to sell GIPHY). And so, regulators should consider breaking up Google Deepmind as per recent proposals: A new paper 'Unscrambling the eggs: breaking up consummated mergers and dominant firms' by economists at Imperial cites Google DeepMind as a firm that could be unmerged. [3] A new Brookings paper also argues that if other means to ensure fair markets fail, then as a last resort, foundation model firms may need to be broken up on the basis of functions, akin to how we broke up AT&T.[4] Relatedly, some top economists agree that we should designate Google Search as 'platform utilities' and break it apart from any participant on that platform, most agree that we should explore this further to weigh costs and benefits.[5] Indeed, the EU accuses Google of abusing dominance in ad tech and may force it to sell parts of its firm.[6] Kustomer, a firm of a similar size to DeepMind bought by Facebook, recently spun out again and shows this is possible. Finally, DeepMind itself has in the past tried to break away from Google.[7] Since DeepMind's AI improves all Google products, regulators should work cross-departmentally to scrutinize both mergers above on the following grounds: Market dominance: Google dominates the field of AI, surpassing all universities in terms of high-quality publications: Tax avoidance: Despite billions in UK profits yearly, Google is only taxed $60M.[8] DeepMind's is only taxed ~$1M per year on average. [9],[10] We should tax them more fairly. DeepMind's recent revenue jump is due to creative accounting, as it doesn't have many revenue streams, but almost all are based on how much Google arbitrarily pays for internal services. Indeed, Google just waived $1.5B in DeepMind's 'startup debt' [11],[12] despite DeepMind's CEO boasting that they have a unique opportunity as part of Google and its dozens of billion user products by immediately shipping their advances into[13] and saving Google hundreds of millions in energy costs.[14] About 85% of the innovations causing the recent AI boom came from Google DeepMind.[15] DeepMind also holds 560 patents,[16] and this IP is very hard to value and tax. Such a bad precedent might cause either more tax avoidance by OpenAI, Microsoft AI, Anthropic, Palantir, and A16z setting up UK offices, or it will give Google an unfair edge over these smaller firms). Public interest concerns: DeepMind's AI improves YouTube's algorithm and thus DeepMind indirectly polarizes voters.[17] Regulators s...

To be clear, he was only representing his own views on the episode. Some key takeaways/thoughts from Basten's point of view:Your first use case - at the core - should A) deliver value in and of itself and B) improve your capabilities to deliver on incremental use cases. That's balancing value delivery, improving capabilities, and building momentum which are all key to a successful long-term mesh implementation. When thinking about data mesh - or really any tech initiative - it's crucial to understand your starting state, not just your target end state. You need to adjust any approach to your realities and make incremental progress.?Controversial?: Relatedly, it's very important to define what success looks like. Doing data mesh cannot be the goal. You need to consider your maturity levels and where you want to focus and what will deliver value for your organization. That is different for each organization. Scott note: this shouldn't be controversial but many companies are not defining their mesh value bet…Even aligning everyone on your organization's definition of mesh success will probably be hard. But it's important to do.For a data mesh readiness assessment, consider where you can deliver incremental value and align it to your general business strategy. If you aren't ready to build incrementally, you aren't going to do well with data mesh.A common value theme for data mesh implementations is easier collaboration across the organization through data; that leads to faster reactions to changes and opportunities in your markets. Mesh done well means it's far faster and easier for lines of business to collaborate with each other - especially in a reliable and scalable way - and there are far better standard rules/policies/ways of working around that collaboration. But organizations have to see value in that or there...

Our Global Head of Fixed Income and Thematic Research outlines the potential impact the upcoming U.S. elections could have on increasing treasury yields, US-China policy and Japan's current trajectory.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Michael Zezas, Morgan Stanley's Global Head of Fixed Income and Thematic Research. Along with my colleagues bringing you a variety of perspectives, today I'll be talking about overseas investors' view on the US election. It's Wednesday, Mar 20th at 10:30 am in New York. I was in Japan last week. And as has been the case with other clients outside the US, the upcoming American elections were a key concern. To that end, we're sharing the three most frequently asked questions, as well as our answers, about the impact of the U.S. election on markets coming from clients outside the US.First, clients are curious what the election could mean for what's recently been a very rosy outlook for Japan. The central bank is taking steps toward normalizing monetary policy which, combined with corporate reforms, is driving renewed investment. And it doesn't hurt that multinationals are finding it more challenging to do new business in China due to U.S. policy restrictions. In our view, regardless of the election outcome, these positive secular trends will continue. While its true that Republicans are voicing greater interest in tariffs on US friend and foe alike, in our view there are other geographies more likely to bear the impact of stricter trade policy from the US – such as Europe, Mexico, and China; areas where there's clearer overlap between US trade interests and the geopolitical preferences of the Republican party.Second, clients wanted to know what the election would mean for US-China policy. The first thing to understand is that both parties are interested in policies that build barriers protecting technologies critical to US economic and national security. For Democrats, this has meant a focus on extending non-tariff barriers such as export and investment restrictions; many of which end up affecting the trade relationship between the US and China, and over time have resulted in US direct investment tilting away from China and toward the rest of the world. Republicans support these policies too. But key party leaders, including former President and current candidate Trump, also want to use tariffs as a tool to negotiate better trade agreements; and, potentially as a fall back, to harmonize tariff levels between countries. So, the election is unlikely to yield an outcome that eases trade tension between the US and China. But an outcome where Republicans win could create more volatility for global trade flows and corporate confidence, creating more economic uncertainty in the near term. Third and finally, clients wanted to know if there were any election outcomes that would reliably change the trajectory of US growth, inflation, and accordingly the trajectory for treasury yields. In particular there was interest in outcomes that could cause yields to move higher. Our take here is that there's been no solidly reliable outcome that points in that direction -- at least not yet. While it's likely that a potential Trump presidency would favor tax cuts and tariffs, it's not clear that either of these definitively lead to inflation. Cutting taxes for companies with healthy balance sheets doesn't necessarily yield more investment. Tariffs increase the cost of the thing being tariffed, but that could lead to prices of other goods in the economy suffering from weaker demand. Relatedly, the idea that a more dovish Fed could enable inflation is not a foregone conclusion because – as we've discussed on prior episodes – the President's ability to influence monetary policy is more limited than you might think.Still, because of the pileup of these factors, it wouldn't be surprising to see rates rise at some point this year on election risk perceptions. But it's not clear this would be a sustained move, and so it's not causing us yet to recommend clients' position for it. For clients looking for more reliable market moves from the election, we're still focused on key sectoral impacts: sectors like industrials and telecom which could benefit from tax cuts in a Republican win scenario; and sectors like clean tech which benefit in a Democratic win scenario, on greater certainty for the spend of energy transition money in the IRA. Of course, as markets change and price in different outcomes, interesting macro markets opportunities will emerge -- and we'll be here to tell you all about it.Thanks for listening. In the 18th installment of the Inside JABA Series, Dr. Dorothea Lerman joins Editor-in-Chief John Borrero and I to talk about her dissemination efforts, which are described in the Winter 2024 issue of the journal. Specifically, we talk about her discussion paper, "Putting the power of behavior analysis in the hands of nonbehavioral professionals: Toward a blueprint for dissemination."   This paper is definitely worth checking out. In it, Dorothy describes some common barriers to disseminating behavioral strategies and how to overcome them. We then talk about the blueprint she offers for dissemination, which is broken down into seven steps.   These dissemination efforts are described in the context of Dorothy's outreach to public school educators, law enforcement personnel, and health care providers, settings where Dorothy and her colleagues have made successful inroads. Not to spoil the show's content too much, but we touch on the alarming stats regarding the percentage of individuals with disabilities who are either sedated or restrained during dental procedures, and what can be done to improve them.   Even if you don't have a desire to bring behavior-analytic strategies to a novel setting, upon listening to the conversation a second time, I think there are lessons from this podcast that you can use in your daily practice. Things like gathering information about a particular culture or setting, describing concepts and principles in plain language, conducting experiments to see if what you're doing is working... you get the idea.   We also spend a decent amount of time talking about sustaining behavioral practices once they've been implemented in new settings.   One of the things that I forgot to mention during the podcast is that if you're really into dissemination, check out the new edited work, "Disseminating Behavioral Research," in which, coincidentally, the ABA Inside Track crew and I contributed a chapter called, "Non Traditional Options for Dissemination." I'll leave it to you to guess what medium we focused on.   Lastly, the Winter 2024 issue of JABA features several moving tributes to Drs. Brian Iwata, Hank Pennypacker, and Ronnie Detrich. Dorothy and Dr. Jennifer Fritz contributed a memoriam to Brian Iwata, and it's well worth checking out. In the first few minutes of the show, Dorothy shared some poignant stories about how Brian influenced her career, and John discussed the responsibility associated with curating the various tributes for this edition of JABA.   Relatedly, for the next three months, all of these In Memoriam articles will be freely available, so in the unlikely event you're not a JABA subscriber, you can still check them out.  Here are the resources we discussed: Putting the power of behavior analysis in the hands of nonbehavioral professionals: Toward a blueprint for dissemination. Update from Commentator: Mary There's lots of strategizing and discussion about what there is and is not time to finish before the end of PSP.  Relatedly, there is some discussion about the joys of finishing longstanding WIPs even if those projects don't count for pigskin party. There was also recently some discussion on pros and cons of different approaches to provisional cast ons, including a method where you use a stitch saver instead of scrap yarn (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olAZk2tkTus).  Finally, there's been some talk of travel plans including the intense decision making process that crafters go through when they are trying to decide what projects to bring on a trip.  This has included discussion of pros and cons of checking luggage vs. carrying on and some musings about who decided that packing light is a value we should all aspire to anyway. Kristen recently shared a link to a story about monkeyshine hunting.  Its a neat tradition that coincides with lunar new year in Tacoma. https://gritcitymag.com/2020/01/a-little-backstory-on-monkeyshines-in-tacoma/ Here's a highlight from the endzone dance thread: Sandyrlevin completed an amazing sweater with a really detailed octopus on it. She did it all with duplicate stitch!  It is truly amazing. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/Sandyrlevin/217-12-amur-maple     Events   Check out all of the details about our Fiber Community February FearLESS Living Fundraiser including the participating makers.   To make a personal donation, you can use this link  Please use the option to “Add a Public Comment” to let us know you're part of this Fiber Community Fundraiser.  I recommend including your Instagram/Ravelry user name so sponsors doing prize drawings and confirm/find you.   More About This Project: February 9th is my mom, Diane Lassonde's, birthday. Diane came up with the idea for the FearLESS Living Fund when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer in December 2021. Since then, each birthday we celebrate with her is precious and this year, with your help, I want to make her birthday month even MORE special by raising funds for this charity she's created.   The FearLESS Living Fund picks up where the Blind Center of Nevada's services leave off, helping their outstanding clients to live more fearlessly in pursuit of their dreams. In 2023, we gave out over $9,000 in scholarships. You can watch a video of the event here. With your help, we can raise even more.   I also have some wonderful goodies here that I am going to giveaway. I'll be pulling winners from those who donate via the PayPal page. Be sure to mention you're part of the Fiber Community Fundraiser and list your Instagram or Ravelry Name so I can find you and send you your prize.   Life in Focus   2024 Word of the Year- Heart Found a heart mural in NYC Bought a small heart shaped pottery dish to use for stitch markers at a local shop where everything is handcrafted by disabled students at their school. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for an in-depth one-on-one episode. The IDF announced last night that it had initiated a committee to look into the IDF's failures leading up to October 7. What do we know about its purview and who is on it? Three Israelis declared missing since October 7 were confirmed by the IDF to be held hostage by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Hanan Yablonka, 42, Idan Shtivi, 28, and Ilan Weiss, 56. What else do we know about them? Relatedly, the IDF notified the family of hostage Sahar Baruch on Wednesday that he was killed during a failed attempt to rescue him from Hamas captivity in the Gaza Strip last month. Since the ground operation began in late October, of the 175 fallen soldiers, 29 were killed by so-called friendly fire and other accidents, according to data released by the IDF on Monday. Fabian puts these numbers into perspective. The IDF has detonated the tunnel complex under Shifa Hospital. What other tunnels has the IDF found recently? Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told US special envoy to the region Amos Hochstein that there is “a short window of time for diplomatic understandings” to be reached with Hezbollah, as the Lebanese terror group continued to carry out daily attacks on northern Israel. Fabian brings analysis of the fragile tit-for-tat balance. For the latest updates, please look at The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: Live blog January 5, 2024 IDF announces probe of failures in lead-up to Oct. 7, drawing rage from ministers Meeting on post-war Gaza ends in fracas as ministers snipe at IDF chief over probe IDF says 3 Israelis missing since October 7 are among Gaza hostages; 1 of them is dead IDF admits hostage Sahar Baruch was killed during failed rescue attempt last month IDF: Deaths of 29 of 170 soldiers in Gaza op were so-called friendly fire, accidents IDF destroys Shifa Hospital tunnels, accuses Hamas of using child soldiers Gallant tells US envoy Hochstein there's a ‘short window' for a deal with Hezbollah THOSE WE HAVE LOST: Civilians and soldiers killed in Hamas's onslaught on Israel THOSE WE ARE MISSING: The hostages and victims whose fate is still unknown Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. When it comes to pricing, less is more. Fewer options means less hassle for you and less decision fatigue for your customers. When it comes to pricing, fewer options is better for your business. Pricing: Fewer Options is Better It's easy, especially as a small business, to bend over backwards for each customer. You develop a different price for each customer, and before you know it every customer is paying a different price. Knock this off. Don't have a scarcity mindset. Develop few pricing options for your customers. This forces your customers to make a decision and simplifies your billing. Pricing: Less is More When it comes to revenue, you want monthly recurring revenue (MRR). This means that each month, the revenue recurs. The client pays the same amount, each month, automatically. Do not force your client to opt-in each month and decide whether they want to pay you each month. This must be automatic, whether it be through ACH or Stripe or through a credit card. This allows you to predict revenue each month. Furthermore, contracts are unnecessary. If clients cancel, they cancel, but make the signup process simple and painless, make payments automatic, have few options, but then work to retain your clients. Relatedly, charge the same each month. This might mean that certain months, your clients receive more service, other months they receive less. Even starting with good intentions of few options and automatic payments, you can exception your way into infinite payment amounts. Even in December, when clients may train less and you may have fewer options, the price remains the same. Ultimately, this is convenient for you AND your client. Both you and your client have the same expectations. Now, it's your time to deliver more value than the price they're paying each month. Pricing: less is more.
