The Southeastern 16 crew reacts to Friday night SEC baseball action, including: Tennessee's Liam Doyle and Vanderbilt's JD Thompson faced off in a premier pitching matchup, but Doyle got the edge in a 3-2 win thanks to huge defensive plays from Hunter Ensley. Auburn swept South Carolina in a doubleheader, including a Game 1 walk-off safety squeeze bunt. Chris Rembert, Eric Guevarra, Cooper McMurray, Bub Terrell and Lucas Steele (twice) all homered for Auburn on Friday, which won despite not getting a usual Sam-Dutton like appearance from its ace. The Tigers are now in prime position to host one weekend, if not two, in the NCAA tournament. Kentucky needs a series win and got off to a great start, beating Kyson Witherspoon and Oklahoma on Friday thanks to great relief from Jackson Nove and a Cole Hage home run. Easton Carmichael homered for Oklahoma. Texas hosts Florida, looking to rebound from its first series loss of the year last weekend. The Gators jumped on Texas early, scoring six runs before the Longhorns got a second out. PIerce Coppola started for Florida while Ruger Riojas was roughed up for Texas. Ole Miss's Hunter Elliott and Mississippi State's Pico Kohn battles in a rivalry series with big implications for both sides. Elliott got the best of Kohn in Game 1 as Jud Utermark, Austin Fawley, Colin Reuter and Ryan Moerman each homered. Georgia and Alabama played a doubleheader a series that could have national-seeding and hosting implications for both sides. The Bulldogs got six home runs, including two from Kolby Branch, in a 19-3 rout in Game 1. Texas A&M looks to take another step towards an NCAA tournament bid in its series with Missouri. Arkansas's Zach Root and LSU's Kade Anderson facing off in Baton Rouge in a premier pitching matchup. (Or did they? The game was in a rain delay at stream start time.) The Southeastern 16 crew discusses Tuesday's results and topics stemming from them, including: Georgia gets a 5-2 win over Georgia Tech at Truist Park to vault to the top spot in the RPI. Devin Obee and Kolby Branch homered for the Bulldogs. Does Tennessee have a bigger role in mind for Andrew Behnke, who started the Vols' 13-6 win over Bellarmine? The Vols also got home runs from Andrew Fischer, Dalton Bargo and Chris Newsroom. Texas got an 11-4 win over UTRGV thanks to five innings of one-run baseball from Kade Bing, and also three RBIs from catcher Rylan Galvan. Auburn beats Jacksonville State, 4-3, improving its RPI to 4 as Chrstian Chatterton retired the first 18 hitters he saw and struck out eight. Lucas Steele had a pinch-hit home run with two outs in the ninth to walk it off. Bobby Boser blasts three home runs for Florida, which improved its RPI to 25. Oklahoma wins 11-1 at Oklahoma State in eight innings as Jason Walk blasts the Sooners' first grand slam this season. Jaden Barfield, Reid Hensley, James Hitt and Dylan Crooks combined to allow just four hits. Vanderbilt freshman Austin Nye has become perhaps the league's best mid-week starter, lowering his ERA to 1.47 as the Commodores walked off cross-town rival Lipscomb, 5-4, with Colin Barczi's single. Ole Miss picks up a damaging, 7-3 loss to a 16-19 Little Rock squad that dropped its RPI several spots. Texas A&M beats Tarleton State, 11-3, with Jace LaViolette homering and Caden McCoy picking up a win with two scoreless innings. Arkansas knocks off UABP, 13-3, in eight innings, thanks to three doubles from reserve Reese Robinett. Arkansas got home runs from Wehiwa Aloy, Zane Becker, Kuhio Aloy and Cam Kozeal and is now second in the RPI. LSU defeats McNeese, 10-3, with Jared Jones smacking a home run among his three hits. Starter William Schmidt got the win, allowing two runs in 3 1/3 innings. Alabama beats UAB, 5-3, improving to 11-0 in mid-weeks, the Crimson Tide's best record there since 1998. Garrett Staton and Brennen Norton hit home runs while Carson Ozmer got his 12th save. Mississippi State blasts Southern, 16-2, in seven innings, getting its seventh run-rule victory this year, with Hunter Hines driving in four runs. The Bulldogs' RPI sits at 37 as State puts itself in position to make the NCAA tournament. Kentucky knocks off Miami (Ohio), 4-3, as Ethan Hindle's bunt leads to an error that scored Kyuss Gargett with the wining run. South Carolina shuts out The Citadel, 4-0, behind pitching from Jackson Soucie, Tyler PItzer, Ashton Crowther and Parker Marlatt, and a KJ Scobey home run. Missouri beats Missouri State, 10-9, improving the Tigers to 13-8 outside the league, but 0-15 inside it. Jackson Lovich had a grand slam for the Tigers. Southeastern 16's Graham Doty and Chris Lee speak with Auburn baseball coach Butch Thompson two weeks before the 2025 season. Topics include: Catcher Ike Irish is a potential first-round bat, and Thompson speaks to the defensive progress he's made this past offseason. First baseman Cooper McMurray is one of the SEC's most underrated players. A new-look lineup that includes transfers Eric Snow, Bristol Carter and Lucas Steele. The Tigers had one of their best recruiting classes in recent memory, adding coveted high-school talents like Chris Rembert, Chase Fralic, Christian Chatterton, Jackson Sanders, Connor Atwood and others. Auburn's rotation may be headlined by transfers Cade Fisher (Florida) and Sam Dutton (LSU). Closer Hayden Murphy had a lights-out summer in the Cape Cod League, perhaps making him one of the SEC's biggest sleepers for the 2025 season. The Tigers also have plenty of experienced bullpen depth with Dylan Watts, Carson Myers, Conner McBride, Parker Carlson, John Armstrong and Cam Tilly. Auburn added a useful back-end bullpen piece through the transfer portal in Mason Koch (Creighton), who has closing experience. Welcome to Episode 1 of SEC Baseball Weekly with Chris Lee, Alfred Ezman, and Graham Doty, an SEC baseball podcast that discusses the biggest storylines in the conference all year long. We'll cover the biggest/trending topics, featuring fun and interesting guest interviews, season predictions, player and team SEC trivia, and a wide range of various unique segments. Chris, Alfred, and Chase talk about what Texas and Oklahoma baseball joining the SEC means for them and the rest of the conference. A deep dive into the coaching carousel: Texas A&M's Jim Schlossnagle takes the Texas job while the Aggies replace him with Michael Earley. Texas supported Schlossnagle with a hire of hitting coach Troy Tulowitzki. South Carolina was able to draw Paul Maineri out of retirement to become the Gamecocks' new head coach. Vanderbit's Tim Corbin fires Mike Baxter, Tyler Shewmake, hires Jayson King and Ty Blankmeyer. And Ole Miss's Mike Bianco fired himself as pitching coach and hired Cleveland's pitching coordinator, Joel Magnum. The transfer portal has been mayhem, starting with Ole Miss's roster getting hit hard. Vanderbilt added Michigan State transfer pitcher Joseph Dzierwa, and a number of good hitters, including James Madison's Mike Mancini and Dayton's David Mendez as well as Georgetown pitcher Cody Bowker. Alabama adds LSU C Brady Neal, Miami 1B and more to come. Arkansas adds Ohio State LHP Landon Beidelschies, Zach Root and Kuhio Aloy. Florida adds Blake Cyr and Billy Barlow, but Cade Fisher and Michael Robertson are out. Tennessee's Robin Villenueve, Bradke Lohry, Derek Schaefer leaving. South Carolina adds Georgia pitcher Jarvis Evans. Tennessee and coach Tony Vitello have lost several players, but expect the Vols to be major players in the portal as always. Auburn and Butch Thompson add a number of players, highlighted by Samford's Lucas Steele. And what about Texas A&M and Jace LaViolette and the other Aggies' who've hit the portal? 0:00 Intro 3:27 What Texas & Oklahoma Bring To SEC Baseball 12:08 SEC Coaching Carousel 32:23 Transfer Portal News FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA Daily Newsletter: https://se14.substack.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/14Southeastern Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/southeastern14_/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@secsports14 ADVERTISE WITH SOUTHEASTERN 14 Reach out to caroline.smith@southeastern14.com to find out how your product or service can be seen by over 150,000 unique viewers each month!
