The Story of John Gardner: DJ an Owner of Orlando's Barbarella, Faith In Physics, Beach Club & MoreIn this episode, we talk with longtime Orlando DJ and nightclub owner John Gardner about nearly five decades of involvement in Central Florida music and nightlife. John talks about growing up in Orlando, discovering music through his older brother's record collection, buying records, attending concerts, and visiting early record stores including Southern Music, Peaches, and East West Records. He recalls seeing bands such as Queen, KISS, America, and the Rolling Stones at the Lakeland Civic Center.John discusses getting into DJing after seeing a wedding DJ and realizing he could turn his love of records into a business. He talks about doing school dances, becoming involved with the Hague Lounge, and eventually opening Faith in Physics in 1985. He recalls working with promoter Jim Faherty and several of the touring ad local bands that performed at Faith in Physics, including Suicidal Tendencies, Circle Jerks, 10,000 Maniacs, Damage, Love Gods and Leisure Suits, Rose Shadows, and Craven A.John talks about opening Beach Club in downtown Orlando at the end of 1987, the emergence of Club Space Fish nights, and the role the venues played in Orlando's alternative music scene. He recalls performances by Smashing Pumpkins, Butthole Surfers, and the B-52s.The conversation also covers the transition from Beach Club to Barbarella and later Independent Bar, one of his favorite 1980s local bands It's All Over (IAO), changes in downtown Orlando nightlife scene, and more. He also talks about getting into pickleball and his plans to keep DJing as he approaches 50 years of DJing.

After making widely loved music as a solo artist and, beforehand, with 10,000 Maniacs, Natalie Merchant is focusing on children with her latest project, Cabinet of Wonder. Spurred by her work with Head Start preschoolers in upstate New York, Merchant set Mother Goose verses to music and collaborated with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Children's Theatre to bring the recordings and videos to life. In this wide-ranging conversation, Merchant speaks of the allure and legend of Mother Goose; describes why working with children is bringing her more joy than pursuing another solo project; and reflects on joining 10,000 Maniacs at age 17, co-writing with band members, working with various producers and feeling compelled to leave after 1992's hit-filled Our Time in Eden. It's about losing a generation of activist women who did so much in their lifetimes. And so I wanted to go back and revisit Natalie Merchant's song, and her beautiful story about what it means to her. Cette semaine Margaux Lassalle met en lumière une chanson immense et incontournable : "Because the Night" de Patti Smith. Sorti en mars 1978 sur "Easter", le troisième album de celle que l'on surnomme la marraine du punk, ce titre possède une genèse fascinante. Initialement ébauché par Bruce Springsteen, le morceau a été retravaillé et sublimé par Patti Smith, alors très inspirée dans l'attente d'un appel de son amoureux, Fred Sonic Smith du groupe MC5. Il en résulte une œuvre directe et profondément sensuelle, abordant le désir comme une faim et un feu dévorant. Ce classique passionné a naturellement séduit de nombreux artistes au fil des années, s'adaptant à des univers très variés. Bruce Springsteen lui-même l'a très souvent interprété sur scène, en livrant notamment une version mémorable à Atlanta quelques mois seulement après la sortie originale. En 1993, le groupe américain 10,000 Maniacs en propose une lecture acoustique légèrement plus dépouillée mais particulièrement fidèle lors de son fameux live MTV Unplugged. Le morceau a également prouvé son efficacité sur les pistes de danse : au début des années 90, le duo italien Co.Ro. et la chanteuse Taleesa le transforment en un véritable tube eurodance en y intégrant un sample de "Master and Servant" de Depeche Mode. Une intensité clubbing qui sera encore accentuée en 2008 avec la reprise survoltée du groupe allemand Cascada. Pour clore cette rétrospective, la chronique s'attarde sur une réinterprétation beaucoup plus proche de l'esprit rock originel du titre, signée par le groupe Garbage accompagné de Screaming Females. D'abord partagée sur scène, cette relecture a finalement été immortalisée il y a deux ans sur la compilation "Copy/Paste". We sat down with I Am The Trireme — the Philly blackened-prog band critics call "the artist's artist" — to break down five albums, one wild recording retreat, and their upcoming genre-smashing epic.I Am The Trireme (IATT) doesn't make easy records. This week we welcome Dennis Drew and Steven Gustafson of 10,000 Maniacs. It hasn't been easy for this excellent band. They got off to a slow start, but broke through on their magical third album In My Tribe with enduring singles like "What's the Matter Here" and "Like the Weather". But after a couple more studio albums that kept the success growing and a hugely successful Unplugged album, lead singer Natalie Merchant left the band. The guys quickly replaced her with Mary Ramsey and continued to record and tour, just not at the same trajectory. This Labor Day weekend the band will celebrate their 45th Anniversary at the Jamestown Arts Festival, where it all began. Dennis and Steve reflect on the journey and share some incredible stories. Through a misunderstanding on reconding schedules Corporal and Banky are left to their own devices so the naturally decide to talk about movies in a very extended episode.  Some of the topics within movies include watching films including some from yesteryear that may be problematic by today's standards.  They also finally do a quick discussion on the 2026 version of Masters of the Universe before getting into other movies based on toys and cartoons of their youth as well as remakes, sequels, and prequels of movies. Corporal talks about a retro-market he went to that turned out to be more retro than he expected when hunting for movies to buy.  They both weigh in on the idea of Sony stepping away from physical media for games and what that can mean for the film industry and consumers as well.
