Speaker: Rustin Smith --- God's image turning humans toward one another in disaster.
1. In his sermon today, Tim repeatedly returned to the phrase “calamity has two faces.” He went on to describe one face that's characterized by neighboring, open hearts, bravery in saving others, and a deep sense of belonging to one another. The other face is characterized by closed hearts, fear rising, darkness, and cruelty.Have you been in calamitous situations in which others have taken on faces of either open heartedness or close hearted fear? How did those “faces” show up? How did they impact others in the situation and/or the situation itself?Which face comes more naturally to you in the face of adversity, calamity, or distress? Are there factors in the circumstances that change what your answer might be? What kind of situations have shown you your own tendencies in this type of context?2. Discussing Isaiah 34 and 35, Tim talked about the prophetic voice when it comes to scary and uncertain times. He talked about the first move for the prophetic voice being the act of truth telling, but also talked about a second move. He said “sometimes going against the grain means speaking a word of hope in the midst of calamity.”Which prophetic move, if either, feels more natural to you? Do you see yourself as a prophetic voice or do you see yourself as having the ability to become one? How comfortable are you speaking truth in moments on which it may be unpalatable or unwelcome? How comfortable are you speaking words of hope when hope may be unfashionable or difficult to embrace? If you can think of an experience during which someone else's prophetic word of hope impacted you, share about it with the group.3. Tim put up a slide that said “our task in this last phase of Advent is to reach out to God, each other, to reach deep inside ourselves and find a place of hope.”What does that look like? How do we do it? How could we cultivate that with and for each other? How much resistance do you feel to that idea or that intention? Why?Underneath that intention lies the statement Tim returned to again and again: “Calamity has two faces…and we do have a choice.” Do you really believe that statement? Both parts of it? Share about why you feel the way you do about this statement and what it means for you.Tim talked about finding that place of hope, and then sharing it with someone else. Do you feel capable of doing that? If it feels difficult, do you feel willing to try? Who in your orbit and life could you share hope with this season? Who needs it? What might that look like in a practical or concrete way? What could you make a plan to actually do to carry the prophetic hope of Advent into the world around you?

Political commentator Mike Indian says that Reeves had to satisfy both Labour MPs and the bond markets and, in doing so, has proven herself a better political operator than given credit for. But the tussle with the OBR is unfortunate. Mike feels its forecast horizon is too distant, though it must offer a robust challenge to government. "Calamity" Lammy's move to Justice has been nothing short of a disaster, topped by changing Levinson's recommendations on trial by jury. Mike doesn't think he will survive the year. And he finds the timing of the racist accusations against the schoolboy Farage suspect, smacking of cynical media opportunism. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Sermon by Pastor James Brown Jr from 1 Samuel 24. An exhortation to have faith and assurance in the Sovereignty and Providence of God.
We continue to drive down deeper into our real-time worldbuilding experiment armed with the comments of our listeners. One of the best things you can build for your campaign to feel real and immersive is by creating factions. Groups and organizations that have their own motives and goals that are distinct from the players. This creates inciting incidents, backstory fodder, and moving parts that conflict with the characters and create impetus for adventure. In this episode, Tony, Chris, and Dave finally begin discussing the biggest faction, and the inciting incident for the Boomtown setting, the shadowy conglomerate from the east coast of the world that is the driving force behind gathering the newly discovered ancient magical technology. Make sure to Join the Conversation!4:05 We begin with some possible ways this conglomerate might be formed and their motives. 6:45 It's important to create the floor for the overall campaign setting.10:00 The concept of the theocracy of the “Divine State” begins to take shape.12:35 The main fulcrum of your campaign setting. DM Dave posits the struggle between religion and faith.17:50 The beginning of the idea of the conglomerate as a “Triumvirate”: Religion, Commerce, and Military.21:24 The need for a break in time in history: The Cataclysm, The Calamity, The Doom of Valyria, etc.23:50 The internal struggles of the Triumvirate create more adventure hooks.25:10 Factions that develop because of opposition to the Triumvirate.35:45 Answering who these other factions are changes the campaign setting: Technological Magic vs Inherent Magic and Power.40:25 The Triumvirate is human-centric. Boomtowns are plural societies.6:35 Final Thoughts.

December's here, and it's time for the big push through to 2026 and opportunity a new year always brings a business owner to set goals, to lay plans and start acting on them. Yet as you'll hear in this edition of Overdrive Radio, it's also true that in so many ways the time for all of that is now, for any small trucking business owner, at any given moment. Like a football coach responding to what the opposing team throws at his own, a quarterback changing the play at the line, successful owner-operators are nothing if not masters of the art of getting prepped for the unforeseen. It's an impossible ask of anyone in some ways, but also a reality you'll hear through today's talk with four Overdrive Trucker of the Year contenders for this year's title. None less so than owner-operator John Treadway, our September Trucker of the Month. He delivered the shocking news of his pristine 1998 Peterbilt 379's October catastrophic engine failure. How might one prepare for that? Owner Treadway's long experience taught him, like others featured in this roundtable talk, the importance of the back-up plan, and not only could he afford what will ultimately be a reman Caterpillar crate engine powering the unit. The original Cat in the 1998 379 he's hopeful to rebuild with some close associates, furthermore, to in future repower his back-up power unit. That backup, a 2006 379, with plenty miles on the odometer itself, is yet another element of Treadways effective prep for the October catastrophe. It's enable him to continue serving his primary and other customers as Caterpillar works through issues with the engine replacement. His isn't the only update you'll get from owners in this podcast, where host and Overdrive Chief Editor Todd Dills put two principal questions to four owners: 1. How's business looking as we head into 2026, and have any goals set early in year 2025 been brought to fruition? 2. Reflecting on your own history trucking, what's the single best piece of advice you might deliver to new and/or aspiring owner-operators to help on the long road to success? Featured, along with Indiana-headquartered Treadway: **John Penn, our most-recent Trucker of the Month in October, hauling LTL furniture principally: https://overdriveonline.com/15770500 **Similarly LTL-focused fresh meat reefer hauler Jason Shelly, based in Pennsylvania: https://overdriveonline.com/15753418 **And two-truck dump fleet owner (with a third truck in more OTR work) Hunter Hubbard: https://overdriveonline.com/15741276 Overdrive's Trucker of the Year competition is sponsored for 2025 by Bostrom Seating -- there's a new seat on the line for the contenders. Consider this roundtable the "Exit interviews" with each ahead of announcements late this month of finalists, after the judging round. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more featured contenders.

Put it in a mech suit. This week, we're back with some very early impressions on Kirby Air Riders, thanks to the Global Test Ride dropping just before recording! We've also got some opening thoughts on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, the action game prequel to Tears of the Kingdom. Does it show as much promise as Age of Calamity? Only time will tell. Then, we dive deep into Metal Gear Solid Delta's Fox Hunt online multiplayer, which has proven to be both interesting and fun, but does come with a few complaints. The good games just keep rolling out! Check out the show on BlueSky @MarkersOnTheMap.

American indie rock band The Antlers began almost 20 years ago as a solo project from singer and songwriter Peter Silberman. While the previous album, Green To Gold, was a pastoral, almost folky affair, the new album, Blight, is almost like a classical song cycle, and is a musical warning about nature under siege. “The consequences of accelerating technology and environmental neglect feel imminent; that sense of urgency made me want to speak more candidly,” he explains (Transgressive Records). Silberman and longtime Antlers drummer Michael Lerner play some of these new songs, in-studio. Set list: 1. Consider the Source 2. Calamity 3. A Great Flood
BT & Sal torch the Jets and Yankees in a four-hour inferno! They dissect Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn's alarming "sensitive and defensive" media responses, arguing his reluctance to be aggressive is a sign he's "coaching scared" and overwhelmed by the New York market. The focus then shifts to the Yankees' year-end post-mortem, which revealed a massive injury crisis (Volpe's shoulder surgery, Rodón's elbow). The hosts tear into GM Brian Cashman's uncharacteristically "tired" demeanor, debating if his long run of disappointment has finally caught up to him. They eviscerate the Yankees' culture, concluding the "dynasty era is over" because Hal Steinbrenner's silence has decimated the standard, allowing a 94-win season to end with the team getting "outclassed and mopped." Finally, they demand accountability from the front office, asking: Who's next on the chopping block after the firings of Harkey and Chapman?
How to Save the American experiment? That's the question the Yale historian John Fabian Witt asks this week in both a New York Times feature and his just published new book, The Radical Fund. Sometimes, Witt suggests, we need what he describes as a “calamity” to recognize and protect the American experiment in democracy. In the 1920s, the historian reminds us, this happened with the emergence of the Garland Fund, a charitable organization set up in 1922 which spawned many of the most profound economic and civil rights reforms of the mid century. Founded by Charles Garland, a disillusioned yet idealistic Harvard heir who refused his million-dollar inheritance, the Fund brought together unlikely bedfellows—from the ACLU and NAACP to labor unions—creating what Witt calls an “incubator” for progressive change. Drawing striking parallels between then and now, Witt argues that strategic philanthropy and what he calls “cross-movement dialogue” can reinvigorate American democracy in a similarly turbulent age of cultural anxiety, political distrust and violent division. History may not repeat itself, Witt acknowledges, but it rhymes. And the real calamity, he warns, would be the end not of history, but of the almost 250 year-old American experiment in political and economic freedom. * The 1920s-2020s Parallel Is Uncanny: Both eras feature post-pandemic societies, surging economic inequality, restrictive immigration policies, rising Christian nationalism, and disruptive new information technologies. Understanding how America navigated the 1920s crisis without civil war offers crucial lessons for today.* Small Money, Strategic Impact: The Garland Fund operated with just $2 million (roughly $40-800 million in today's terms)—a fraction of Rockefeller or Carnegie fortunes—yet proved transformative. Success came not from sheer dollars but from bringing together feuding progressive movements (labor unions, civil rights organizations, civil liberties groups) and forcing them into productive dialogue.* Incubators Matter More Than Calamities: While crises like the Great Depression provided energy for change, the Fund created the institutional forms and intellectual frameworks that shaped how that energy was channeled. They pioneered industrial unions, funded the legal strategy behind Brown v. Board of Education, and staffed FDR's New Deal agencies with their “brain trust.”* Cross-Movement Dialogue Is Transformative: The Fund's greatest achievement was convening conversations among groups that disagreed fundamentally—labor versus racial justice organizations, communists versus liberals. These uncomfortable alliances produced the cross-racial labor movement and civil rights strategies that defined mid-century progressivism. Today's left needs similar bridge-building across fractured movements.* We Need New Categories for New Economics: The institutions that saved 1920s democracy—industrial unions, civil rights organizations, civil liberties groups—are each in crisis today. The gig economy, AI, and virtual work demand fresh thinking, not just recycling 1920s solutions. Witt suggests progressives must incubate new organizational forms for 21st-century capitalism, just as the Garland Fund did for industrial capitalism.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Donald Trump arrives in the region to address the Knesset and receive Israel's highest civilian honor as a U.S.-brokered ceasefire unfolds — and with it, the return of 20 living hostages. But the glowing headlines hide a harsher truth: more than 1,900 Palestinian detainees (including hundreds serving life sentences) are being released in exchange, a move critics say hands Hamas a lifeline and reconstitutes its fighting ranks. In this episode we parse the deal — the jubilant reunions, the geopolitical guarantees from Turkey and Qatar, and the chilling security questions that follow. Tune in for an unflinching breakdown of what “victory” really looks like today.

Rachel Maddow highlights the difference between Donald Trump's rhetoric and his actions and notes that taking the big picture of Trump's actions can illuminate significant trends. For example, moving an individual out of one position in the administration into another may not seem particularly noteworthy until it becomes clear that Trump is moving people into ambassadorships instead of firing them. Similarly, a pattern appears to be taking shape as high-level military and national security leaders are being dismissed from service.Donald Trump is acting as though he has the authority to fire members of the Federal Reserve Board and had attempted to do so with Governor Lisa Cook. Paul Krugman joins to explain the disaster Trump is courting.Constantly making a mess of the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case hasn't stopped the Trump administration from continuing to do so. Today a judge prevented his deportation to Uganda. And red states that have sent National Guard troops to serve in Trump's military occupation of Washington, D.C. have cities with higher crime rates than D.C., exposing the lie that these deployments have anything to do with fighting crime.
