This week we sat down with Skyler Jett, a vocalist, songwriter, producer and humanitarian activist. Raised by a single mother across the bay in Oakland, Skyler found a love for music from singing with his family at their church. Fostering his talents and passions from a young age, Skyler has now grown to not only be Grammy-recognized, but also perform and record with an impressive range of artists like Stevie Wonder, Sting, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, and Eddie Murphy. He even sang with Celine Dion on the Grammy-winning song “My Heart Will Go On” from the film Titanic. In 1982, Jett replaced Lionel Richie in The Commodores, which toured over 30 countries. Jett hit his stride with the founding of Music for Global Change. Through this foundation, he collaborates with socially-conscious music artists to break down barriers of racism and raise awareness around racial stereotypes. Jett also mentors youth about the benefits of positive language in song lyrics to promote societal growth. Skyler is a kind and generous man who learned from his mother to always help others no matter what. Jett has synthesized the power of music and his love for others in the most extraordinary and effective ways, and his skills and talents have helped him reach communities worldwide. We are so excited to share some of his story with you, and we hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did. Meet Skyler Jett!

Just like that, we are 3-0 and a quarter of the way through the college football season. The rain held off last weekend and it turned out to be a gorgeous football Saturday in the Classic City. The Dawgs took it to the Gamecocks early and often. Despite USCjr actually getting within one score in the 1st half, this game was never really close. If we hadn't shot ourselves in the foot a couple times, it very easily could have been 54-3 at the end of regulation. This team seems to get more and more hungry the further we get into the season. In this episode, we discuss what went right in the South Carolina game, and more importantly, the things we need to improve on. We also examine how the SEC landscape is unfolding and we dedicate a small amount of time to talk about the horrendous football team we're playing in Nashville this weekend. The Next Reel Film Podcast Master Feed

Director Amy Heckerling obviously did something right with her first feature film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. For Heckerling's second feature film, she had almost double the budget that she had before. Considering her second film was a period film, that likely helped. Now it may seem that Johnny Dangerously was a strange choice after her first film captured modern teens so well, but she clearly was tuned into young audiences. Perhaps the producer and studio felt she could carry a period parody and do it in such a way to bring in young audiences. The studio, Twentieth Century Fox, needed a hit after all. And while there were decisions made that date the film, we still find it works. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our 80s Comedy With Coolidge & Heckerling series with Heckerling's 1984 film Johnny Dangerously. Is there really much to talk about with Johnny Dangerously? You bet there is! We talk about the nature of parody films, why some work really well, and why this one may not have stood the test of time with some bigger ones like Airplane! and Blazing Saddles. All the same, we can't stop our effusive love for this film. That's likely because of the impressionable age we saw it. We think this is even more true after talking to our Discord community about it only to find many had never even heard of this film. The cast is bonkers. Michael Keaton. Joe Piscopo. Marilu Henner (theatre genius!). Peter Boyle. Maureen Stapleton. Griffin Dunne. Dom DeLuise. Danny DeVito. Ray Walston. Dick Butkus. Alan Hale Jr. Neal Israel. Jack Nance. Taylor Negron. Vincent Schiavelli. Richard Dimitri. And they all deliver. Especially Marilu Henner – what a voice! They're all clearly having fun and even when it's a big surprise to see someone like Stapleton in the film, it's clear she's having a good time. But what's with the 30s style eye makeup? Yeah, we get that it's meant to feel like we're watching a movie from the era, but it feels a bit strange when watching a color film. All the same, we don't really care too much about this. The script is chock full of laugh lines, meta humor, fourth wall breakage, and visual gags, and we laugh at most of them. It's damn funny! We're not sure why some people just don't click with it. When writing constant jokes in a script, though, you have to expect some are going to fall flat. But would it have all worked better with the original ending where Johnny dies? But seriously – what's with the weird bull joke? It took us forever, but while we were recording, we found the source Schlitz Malt Liquor ad campaign on YouTube to help make the joke make more sense. This leads to a whole conversation about the nature of timed jokes vs. timeless ones, and why jokes that are so key to the era may fall completely flat if you don't know the reference point. (All the same, check out some of the Schlitz Malt Liquor Bull commercials in our show notes. They're bonkers! Kevin Kline even turns up on one as Robin Hood!) Was this the film that saved Fox from certain bankruptcy at the end of the year? Okay, maybe that's putting a bit too much on this one film but its box office success certainly was welcome for the studio that had been struggling all year. Last but not least, what are your feelings about “Weird” Al Yankovic? He's been around for decades and whether you like his stuff or not, it's hard to argue that he's not cranking out some very clever work. His title song in this film is a lot of fun! We acknowledge that Johnny Dangerously may be a film you need to have seen when it came out and have been of a certain age to really click with it, but if you did, you're likely are like us and have strong feelings for this film. We have such a great time talking about it and reminiscing. Check it out then tune in! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins! And we've seen plenty of offseason coverage on the role of former 247Sports star Barton Simmons at Vanderbilt, too. But what about OC David Raih, an energetic, 'intense' figure who might hold the key to the Commodores' long-term success. Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak and Silk Sonic Take Their ‘70s Throwback to the Roller Disco With ‘Skate' Silk Sonic, the lusciously retro duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak that debuted back in March with the smash throwback single “Leave the Door Open,” continue their loving tribute to the mid-1970s with the smooth R&B of “Skate.” Where the first single was based around 1974-era groups like the Commodores and the Chi-Lights, “Skate” pivots forward a couple of years with a sound more reminiscent of disco-era acts like Tavares and mid-tempo tracks from the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack. As with “Leave the Door Open,” it's a pitch-perfect throwback, with swooning strings, textured guitars, vintage vocal exhortations and even a period-appropriate financial reference in the opening line: “In a room full of dimes, you'd be worth a hundred dollars.” The seeds of the collaboration were planted in 2017 when .Paak opened for Mars on the European leg of his “24K Magic World Tour.” They jammed one night while on tour and apparently explored the vibe they're following with Silk Sonic — according to the announce, emt, just before quarantine began last year, Mars called .Paak and said, “Remember that idea we had back in 2017? Let's do it." What's going on Internet, Analytic here aka Dreamz and I would like to welcome you to mine, which I call the Notorious Mass Effect Podcast! What is True Love according to the Bible? And how did Jesus exhibit it? We continue the exploration today. I am praying that Holy Spirit will speak to each heart listening and for our hearts to be expanded to receive God's Agape love. With that, then we will be enabled to love with genuine love and become vessels through whom God can use to accomplish His purposes here on earth. There is a world of hopeless, dying folks who need Jesus' love. Let's drink deep and then go and share!
