One of the things that always amazed me about the songs that became big hits in the pop era between the 1950s and the 1990s was the sheer variety of musical styles that topped the charts. When doing research for this show I went into a bit of a spiral looking at Billboard charts for the late 1970s, and I got stuck on the summer of 1978, with the amazing wealth of songs that were in the top 20 at the time. Some of the songs, of course have fallen into the mists of time because they don’t get the oldies airplay anymore, and that’s a shame because there’s still some very good stuff there. This was the Top 20 chart for the week ending August 19, 1978 according to The Real American Top 40 Wiki page: Commodores – Three Times A Lady (↔) Frankie Valli – Grease (↔) Donna Summer – Last Dance (↔) Rolling Stones – Miss You (↔) Foreigner – Hot Blooded (↔) A Taste Of Honey – Boogie Oogie Oogie (↔) Pablo Cruise – Love Will Find A Way (↔) Barry Manilow – Copacabana (↔) Walter Egan – Magnet And Steel (↔) Andy Gibb – An Everlasting Love (↔) Olivia Newton-John – Hopelessly Devoted To You (↔) Joe Walsh – Life’s Been Good (↔) Toby Beau – My Angel Baby (↔) Atlanta Rhythm Section – I’m Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight (↔) Evelyn King – Shame (↑4) Exile – Kiss You All Over (↑2) Steve Martin – King Tut (↔) Chris Rea – Fool (If You Think It’s Over) (↑3) Earth Wind & Fire – Got To Get You Into My Life (↑10) Jackson Browne – The Load-Out/Stay (↔) Pretty much all of these songs, I wouldn’t mind listening to again. And that’s not always the case with songs at this level of the charts. (“Having My Baby,” anyone?) We have here a mix of disco, R&B, retro pop, ballads, a live track, a novelty song, a soundtrack title, about a half-dozen well-established acts and three one-hit wonders (I’m not counting Steve Martin there because it’s a novelty). And they’re all at varying levels of “good”! All of this is prologue to the fact that Stevie Nicks was in the thick of the music industry for a three-year period, either as a writer, a lead or a backup singer. All of which cemented her in the musical firmament. If she’d done nothing else after 1979, she’d still be fondly remembered. But in addition to being all the things above, she was also a muse for several artists, much of which we’re covering in this episode. I bumped into some problems with regard to quantifying songs about her, but I did my best and I’d be curious to know what you may think I’ve overlooked, because there were a few I did research on and got nowhere.

Few yacht rock hits of the 70s have endured as well as Player's 1977 classic "Baby Come Back." While they had a few other hits, they've been completely overshadowed by this monolith. What you may not be as aware of is the vast songwriting career of frontman Peter Beckett. Remember "Twist of Fate" by Olivia Newton-John? That was Peter. Or "Dare to Fall in Love" by Brent Bourgeois? Also Peter. There's also been the Temptations, Commodores, Survivor, Heart. Grace Slick, and Janet and Jermaine Jackson. There was even a stint in Little River Band. These days he's embracing the yacht rock life for all it's worth and tells us stories about all of it including seeing the Beatles at the Cavern! It's stories galore this week! Enjoy! The Southeastern 16 crew talks about one of the better bowl matchups in the country: Vanderbilt and Iowa in the ReliaQuest bowl. We preview and predict outcomes on the game, including the following topics: You can prepare for Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia… but can you really prepare for what he brings on any given day given his abilities and a penchant for making plays no one else does? The Heisman runner-up had a fantastic season. Tight end Eli Stowers won the Mackey Award and is Pavia's top target. Running backs Sedrick Alexander and MK Young are also capable threats for the Commodores. Iowa's defense was stout. It allowed just 15.2 points and 271 yards per game and was tough against the run and the pass, and held Oregon to 18 points. Iowa's offense put up 40 points against Nebraska in the finale. The Hawkeyes are led by dual-threat quarterback Mark Gronowski and running back Kamari Moulton (783 rushing yards). Iowa has the Remington Award winner in center Logan Jones, an All-American in guard Beau Stephens and a second-team All-Big 10 tackle in Gennings Dunker. Both teams are great on special teams. Iowa's Kaden Wetjen is one of the country's top return men, while Vanderbilt, led by kicker Brock Taylor and punter Nick Haberer, is excellent in all areas of special teams. Vanderbilt increasingly went up-tempo late in the year with success, making the “over” a sneaky play here. “I feel like no one believes in me and that's my approach. I got the underdog mentality and that's what I'll have all my life.” Diego Pavia We headed to Nashville to sit with one of sports' biggest breakout stars who's improbable journey has landed him in the national spotlight and on this episode of The Pivot Podcast, we learn more about one of the most electrifying and unlikely stars in college football today—Diego Pavia. Once an undersized and overlooked kid grinding his way through JUCO ball, Pavia's journey to the national spotlight is nothing short of remarkable as he just etched himself a part of history being named a 2025 Heisman Finalist. He opens up about how he went from fighting for reps at a junior college to becoming the quarterback who completely transformed the culture at Vanderbilt, leading the Commodores to relevance in the SEC and putting the program back on the map. Despite a season worthy of national recognition—and even securing a spot as a Heisman Trophy finalist—Pavia and Vandy were hit with a controversial College Football Playoff snub that sent shockwaves through the sport. Diego talks candidly about the fire that keeps him going, tracing it back to his upbringing, the sacrifices made by his mom, and the constant motivation he draws from his brother. It's a story of grit, doubt, resilience, and belief—proof that heart can take you where pedigree can't. From JUCO fields to SEC stadiums, from being overlooked to becoming a household name, Diego Pavia's rise is one of the most compelling stories in college football—and he shares it all right here on The Pivot. Recorded: June 16th, 2025 | On this episode of Best of the Bus, The Boys sat down with one of the most electric quarterbacks in college football — Diego Pavia. Pavia shared his wild journey from being a standout wrestler in high school to calling his own plays at New Mexico State and leading the Aggies to a historic upset win over Auburn. Diego opened up about being overlooked as a recruit, how he maximized his time at NMSU, and what the transition has been like moving into the SEC at Vanderbilt. He broke down the behind-the-scenes story of the Commodores’ shocking upset over No. 1 Alabama and what that win meant for the program. The conversation also hit on whether he considered entering the transfer portal again, the expectations for his first full SEC season, and just how much Coach Jerry Kill impacted his entire football journey. And of course — Diego doubled down on his belief that Vanderbilt would run Tennessee this year and even said the Commodores could make the College Football Playoff. It was bold, hilarious, and absolutely peak Diego. It’s the kind of interview that makes you root for the dude. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
