Send us a textWelcome to another soul-stirring episode of God-sized Stories with Patricia Holbrook! In today's episode, I have the privilege of speaking with DeAnna Lynn Sanders, an inspiring advocate who has spent years working with "She is Safe" to empower and give voice to unseen individuals globally.DeAnna joined She is Safe in 2011 and has since traveled the world to document stories of resilience and hope from countries like Bolivia, Bangladesh, India, South Africa, and Indonesia. Her blog and now her new book, "Unseen People," encapsulate her journey in amplifying the voices of those often overlooked in society. We delve into the societal issue of feeling unnoticed and undervalued, whether it's a waitress at a local diner or vulnerable young girls in Indonesia. DeAnna shares her personal anecdotes, including touching stories about connecting with service workers like Juan and Julie and forming meaningful relationships with neighbors. We touch on the critical need to be present and aware of God's nudges to reach out and provide comfort, especially to those who might feel abandoned or unnoticed in their grief or daily struggles. This conversation is a beautiful reminder of our calling to serve as ambassadors of God's love, recognizing and valuing every individual we encounter both near and far.To watch the interview on YouTube: https://youtu.be/0QW1J2-kOQ8 To win a copy of the book: https://kingsumo.com/g/m2rpw71/unseen-people-by-deanna-lynn-sanders-book-giveawayPS: Did you know I now have a new Portuguese Channel? Do you think maybe it's time we dispense with the myth of the starving artist? There are more than enough ways to make money in creative industries these days. And not just in applied arts like graphic design or architecture. "Marketability" can be a dirty word for some artists, but for others it's a goal that isn't at odds with expression. Even abstract expressionism. Or as Andy Warhol put it, "The business of art requires strategy and analysis." OK, you're right, that's not Warhol. That's a bit of wisdom from Lafayette artist Lynn Sanders. Lynn is an abstract expressionist artist with a head for business. Before she carved out a career as a painter, she worked as a shopping center executive. That gave her insight into how retailers and consumers think. Once she picked up a brush, she applied that knowledge to her art business. Lynn first sold pieces out of a store she opened in a mall, making works for kids' rooms. She quickly figured out the money was in the rest of the house. Flash forward about 20 years, and Lynn sells pieces through galleries across the South. A lot of Lynn's work is purchased for interior design, and she produces some pieces on commission. Lynn produces about 18 paintings a month and employs a full-time assistant in her Lafayette-area studio. If you work in fashion, the idea that art and consumerism don't mix would seem insane. Clothing designers have long blended expression and marketability, selling the idea that what we wear can be a part of who we are. Nothing makes you stand out quite like a custom hat. If that's something you're looking for, you might turn to Mia Montero, owner of the Montero Hat Company. Mia makes custom, hand stitched hats out of rabbit, nutria and beaver felts. Her hats are show pieces in a southwestern style. And she's made them for some high profile folks: Lauren Daigle and Louisiana First Lady Sharon Landry have Montero hats. Mia got into the business while looking for ways to make a little extra money before moving to Nashville for a career in music. She learned the trade from Lafayette hatter Colby Hebert and struck out on her own. Mia looked at planting roots in Music City, but a surprise offer to work as a worship leader in Lafayette brought her home. Music is Mia's first love and she released her debut record Sweeter Than Honey in 2023. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. Enjoy today's episode with Lynn Sanders. Lynn Sanders is an artist excited by beauty: architecture, foliage, landscapes, seascapes, interiors. She finds palettes and shapes in her environment and propels them into her work, believing in the power of art to stimulate a person's environment and state of mind. Intuitive in nature, Lynn's painting process is chaotic, and its speed and intensity are often reflective of her current emotions. She begins her process using a tool that she designed to apply custom colors mixed with various mediums to the canvas. Working primarily in acrylics, acrylic mediums, and ink, she achieves chemical reactions that enhance the composition. Her tool allows her to apply the paint at a pace that reflects her impatient nature. This process achieves deep tones layered with transparent shapes. Her long relationship with this application technique has allowed her to develop an innate understanding of the precise amount of pressure and paint needed to achieve her signature aesthetic. With a focus on process over concept, Lynn's pieces invite the viewer to ponder the technique and imagery. Her satisfaction comes from knowing that her pieces speak her own unique visual language. Lynn resides in Lafayette, Louisiana with her husband and son, as well as her beloved pets. Prior to her art career Lynn spent 16 years in the shopping mall industry as a marketing director, general manager and temporary tenant leasing agent. She worked for large property owners – Jones Lang Lasalle, General Growth Properties and Debartolo Corporation. Retired Michigan State Trooper, Lynn Sanders is someone I have known for over 25 years. And just like the title of this episode says, Lynn Sanders is about doing it, not just talking about it. We talk about the many things Lynn has been a part of and the people and organizations, he has made an impact on. One of my favorite parts of our conversation was, hearing Lynn speak about pinning a MSP badge on his youngest son, Londale, who recently became a Michigan State trooper. This interview was special for me, because Lynn Sanders and his wife Kathy, have played major roles in our daughter's lives at a young age. So to talk about this with Lynn, brought back memories.
