Lulu: Hi, everyone. And welcome back to one of your favorite segments, TV Picks. You notice that usually I say Lulu's TV Picks, “璐璐荐剧”, but today I just said TV picks, that's because today's TV picks comes from Anlan. Hi, Anlan. Anlan: Hello. Lulu: Thank you for joining this other segment. Anlan: That's absolutely brilliant to come along. I love watching TV, so hopefully I might have a few TV picks that our fans might be interested in. Lulu: You certainly have a very different taste when it comes to TV picks. Anlan: Well yeah. I'm not big fan of crime shows or cop shows. Lulu: Horror. Anlan: Horror. Basically if you are like me and you don't really fancy being depressed watching SVU and other similar types of TV show, I think this segment might be good for you. Lulu: So enough with the suspense, what is the TV pick that you are going to share with us today? Anlan: I'm going to share a lovely TV pick for you called All Creatures Great and Small. Lulu: All Creatures Great and Small. We actually wrote an article about this, it has been very popular in China as well. Anlan: Yes, it's really popular in the UK, and also very popular in America as well apparently. Lulu: But for those who have never heard of it, could you give us the background? Anlan: Right. So All Creatures Great and Small is a remake of an earlier TV show in the 1980s which actually I watched when I was growing up, based on the books of James Herriot. Lulu: James Herriot. Anlan: Yeah. James Herriot was a British vet or veterinary doctor, who became a writer. Lulu: Vet is an animal doctor. Anlan: Yes. Lulu: 兽医.  And that book or this TV series is basically about his experience of being a vet. Anlan: Yeah, basically in a very unique part of the UK called Yorkshire. Lulu: 约克郡. You hear that a lot in obviously a lot of the TV shows relating to UK. But what is Yorkshire actually like?I personally have never been to Yorkshire. Anlan: Well, Yorkshire is a county in the North of England. It's really famous for the dales. Lulu: Dales? Anlan: Dales are… it's a type of park, it's a type of countryside, and it's really beautiful. They're like valleys. Anlan: Yeah, they're very small valleys, you know. It's not like the Grand Canyon or anything like that. They're just very small… Lulu: Quaint little valleys. Anlan: Yeah, with lots of villages, lots of farms as well. Hence, why he is a vet. Lulu: When British people think of Yorkshire, do they automatically think of beautiful countryside? Anlan: Partly. Yes. Another word for Yorkshire, another name for Yorkshire is God's own country, and that's something that Yorkshire people do actually like to say because they… Lulu: They're very proud of it. Anlan: They are very proud. It's a very beautiful part of the UK. Yorkshire people, they're also quite unique as well. There's a bit of a stereotype about them that they are very direct, very honest,  actually sometimes bordering on rude or being a bit stubborn. Lulu: Probably like no nonsense type of people. Anlan: Exactly. But in reality a lot of Yorkshire people they're very down to earth, they're also very friendly as well. There are also some stereotypes that they're quite frugal and tight with money. But I would say probably they're a little bit more careful because Yorkshire was always traditionally a slightly poorer area of the UK. Lulu: It's just what you have described just paints a picture very much like traditional small town, small villages that type of idea. And the TV show is basically about a vet in Yorkshire. Anlan: That's it. In the program, it's about him coming to Yorkshire and living and working with another vet there whose name is Siegfried Farnon. Lulu: Farnon. Anlan: Farnon hired Herriot as a vet. And Farnon is actually quite eccentric.

This chapter from "All Creatures Great and Small," is the only one that's really worth reading out of the whole book. I would discourage anyone from reading this book because there's a good deal of vile language in it and the fact that it all devolves into a romance at the end. But I once had dreams of being a veterinarian myself and this story opened my eyes as to what a tough profession it truly is and I quickly reconsidered. It's fascinating what hard knocks veterinarians go through. We begin this story on the first day of Mr. Herriot's practice as assistant veterinarian to Mr. Farnon, in Darrowby, England… My website: https://catholic-mens-podcast.pinecast.co/ Email me at: michaelsword7@gmail.com

Hello everyone! On this episode of Paranoid in My Paradise @saimfarooqui @brooklynletson @jeremyritchie18 @sloaneherriot get into the conversation of sustainability and consumption, and the media marketing schemes. From elementary science class to everyday adult life, we have been learning about consumerism and sustainability. Fast fashion, plastic waste, carbon footprint, media marketing, large corporations brainwashing young minds, are just some key highlights relayed in this conversation, that impact our everyday lives. Society is heavily influenced by minor and major things. We must be conscious of our decisions, ecology, environmentally, socially wise. BLM is not a media trend, it is a movement, forever. Our generation is just scratching the surface of repairing the wounds from the generations before us, many of us have had the privilege of never experiencing oppression, it is important we recognize, understand, support, encourage, and stand up for all communities. Unity ties us, humans, together. The faster we learn to come together, the faster we develop in this world.

All Creatures Great and Small tells the story of a Scottish veterinarian who moves out to the English countryside. It started as a book series written under the pen name James Herriot. In each chapter, Herriot drives around the Yorkshire Dales in an old car, from farm to farm, appointment to appointment. He treats horses, cows and dogs in neighboring villages. In the '70s and '80s, the books became a TV series of the same name on the BBC. All Creatures set in the '30s, between the wars. It's a quiet series – gentle, funny and bursting with love. There's a brand new television series based on the book. We talk about the latest reiteration with Ben Vanstone, writer and showrunner who created the reboot. There's quite a few animals on the show, but who's Ben's favorite? All that and so much more on the latest episode.

It will be interesting to hear what your thoughts are about this place over time. It's always fascinating to me how a garden speaks to us long after a visit. Sometimes first impressions are shadows of a more profound understanding that comes later."   Now, if you'd like to check out these curated items for yourself, you're in luck - because I share all of it with the Listener Community in the Free Facebook Group - The Daily Gardener Community. I'd love to meet you in the group.     Brevities #OTD On this day in 1492, Christopher Columbus notes in his diary: "I climbed a mountain and came to level ground, which was sown with many different crops and with gourds." The gourds Columbus was referring to were squashes that were used for more than food.  After the skin had been cleaned and dried, the skins were used as utensils.   #OTD  On this Day in 1586, Sir Thomas Herriot introduced Colombian potatoes to England. Over fifty years earlier, the Spanish had been the first to discover potatoes - but Herriot's potatoes were the first to reach England. Harriot had spent time in Sir Walter Raleigh’s English colony on Roanoke Island in modern-day North Carolina. There, he studied not only wildlife but also potatoes from Columbia. Herriot was also an astronomer. In July of 1609, he created a drawing of the moon through a telescope over four months before Galileo.       #OTD  Today is the anniversary of the death of the French botanical painter for King Louis the XIV and XV, Claude Aubriet, who died on this day in 1742. When Aubriet was appointed "Painter to the King" after the death of his master Jean Joubert in 1707, he technically didn't have the right credentials because he didn't belong to the Academy of painting and sculpture. But, the King approved Aubriet's appointment anyway, and he lived at the Royal Garden until he died. Aubriet was sponsored by the French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort to create over a thousand illustrations for his acclaimed book - Elements of Botany. Other botanists, including Sebastien Vaillant and Antoine Jussieu also hired Aubriet to do their illustrations. During his time at court, Aubriet painted twenty-four miniatures a year for 35 years resulting in nearly 600 vellums for the royal collection. Today, they are preserved at the Museum national d’Histoire Naturelle of Paris. What distinguishes Aubriet’s work was his desire to paint all the known species in both the animal and plant kingdoms. Aubriet painted fish and insects and birds and mammals - in addition to plants. In 1722, Aubriet changed his will. His most prized possession was a cabinet he had inherited from his former master Jean Joubert. Aubriet left the cabinet to his friend, the botanist Bernard Jussieu. The cabinet was described this way: “In a wood veneer, exquisite paintings of parrots... ornamented the panels ... with their golden border.”   As you might have already suspected, the genus Aubrieta (“Aubreesha”) was named for Claude Aubriet by the French Botanist Michel Adanson. Aubrieta is an ornamental plant, and it grows well in rock gardens. The leaves resemble succulents, and after flowering, a light clip will encourage new shoots.     #OTD On this day in 1873, the gardener and writer Henry Arthur Bright began a diary, which would become known as the book "A Year in a Lancashire Garden" - one of the most beloved garden biographies of the nineteenth century. Bright's book would inspire future garden writers like Eleanor Vere Gorden Boyle, Henry Nicholson Ellacombe, Maria Theresa Earle, and Elizabeth Lawrence. Here are some excerpts from Bright's journal entry for this day in 1873. At the very end, he talks about making a potent tincture with petals from a Madonna Lily: "These notes are written for those who love gardens as I do... and they are written ... to convey to others some little of the delight, which grows (more certainly than any bud or flower) from the possession and management of a garden.  Lancashire is not the best possible place for a garden, and to be within five miles of a large town is certainly no advantage. We get smoke on one side, and salt breezes on another, and, worst of all, there comes down upon us every now and then a blast, laden with heavy chemical odors, which is more deadly than either smoke or salt. Still, we are tolerably open, and in the country.  These are certainly what the American poet Bryant calls “the melancholy days, the saddest in the year.” The late autumn flowers are over; —the early spring ones are still buried under the soil. I could only find this morning a single blighted monthly Rose, a Wallflower or two, an uneasy-looking Polyanthus, and some yellow Jasmine against the house—and that was all. Two days of early frost had killed the rest.  Lastly, the Chrysanthemums are in flower. The Chrysanthemum has three merits above almost every flower. It comes in the shortest and darkest days; it blooms abundantly in the smoke of the largest cities; it lasts longer than any flower when cut and put into water. If flowers have virtues, the virtue of the Chrysanthemum is its unselfish kindliness.  In the hybrid beds, I shall plant a number of roots of the Lilium candidum—the dear old white Lily of cottage gardens. And as I write I am told of a recipe [using] the firm white petals. You must gather them while still fresh, place them unbroken in a wide-necked bottle, packed closely and firmly together, and then pour in what brandy there is room for. In case of cut or bruise, no remedy is more efficacious and certainly none more simple."       Unearthed Words “There are many in this old world of ours who hold that things break about even for all of us. I have observed, for example, that we all get the same amount of ice. The rich get it in the summertime, and the poor get it in the winter.” - Bat Masterson - who had a Daylily named in his honor   "An onion can make people cry, but there's never been a vegetable that can make people laugh." - Will Rogers   It's Time to Grow That Garden Library with Today's Book: Vegetables Love Flowers by Lisa Mason Ziegler   The subtitle for this book is Companion Planting for Beauty and Bounty. As the description of this book reminds us, "Planting vegetables and flowers together is one of the oldest ways to create a healthy, bountiful garden, but there's more to the method than you might think. Vegetables Love Flowers will walk you through the ins and outs of companion planting, from how it works to which plants go together and how to grow the best garden for your climate." Lisa provides excellent guidance on how to incorporate flowers into a vegetable garden. She offers helpful tips and ideas for stunning vegetable gardens that are full of color - btw, the images in this book are beautiful. If you've ever wondered how you can enjoy a year of beauty in your garden - growing both healthy veggies and gorgeous flowers to boot, this book will be an Inspiration.       Today's Recommended Holiday Gift for Gardeners: Hoffman 17502 Charcoal Soil Conditioner, 24-Ounce  $5.99 Charcoal soil conditioner Improves drainage and absorbs impurities Horticultural charcoal is an additional item recommended by garden writers for custom mixing potting Will not burn releases nitrogen slowly, feeding plants over a long period, pelletized for easy application This is the kind of coal a gardener would love to find in their stocking.       Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart Today is the 100th anniversary of the death of the impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir who died on this day in 1919. There's a little-known story about Renoir. For many years, he hung a sign on his garden gate which read, "No Renoirs sold here. Beware the dog." Pierre-Auguste Renoir said, when he was painting flowers, he was able to paint  “freely and boldly without the mental effort he made with a model.”  He said “If you paint the leaf on a tree without using a model, your imagination will only supply you with a few leaves,” he said. “But Nature offers you millions, all on the same tree. … The artist who paints only what is in his mind must very soon repeat himself.”  It was Renoir who said, “The pain passes but the beauty remains.” “What seems most significant to me about our movement [Impressionism] is that we have freed painting from the importance of the subject. I am at liberty to paint flowers and call them flowers, without their needing to tell a story.”       Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Male Sexual Abuse Survivors – Shattering the Silence

Childhood sexual abuse leaves a lifelong scar. It is difficult for male survivors of sexual abuse to discuss the matter in public because of social stigma. So much so that many survivors keep on denying the reality. Cecil Murphey, speaker, blogger and author of books like ‘More than Surviving: Courageous Meditations for Men Hurting from Childhood Abuse’, helps survivors of male sexual abuse accept reality, share their pain with compassionate listeners, and believe in the fact that they are not alone in their suffering. Male Sexual Abuse Survivors Shatter the Silence I interviewed Cec Murphey who explained how writing helped him come to terms with his own past sexual abuse. Through his blogs, articles and books, he opens up about his own struggles. His blogs and books also include real life stories of survivors of male sexual abuse. Cec helps other survivors to share their trauma with compassionate readers. He wants them to accept reality, find help and move on. Survivors of sexual abuse, particularly men, find it more difficult to talk about their harrowing experiences. They have to overcome shame and break social taboos. Hence, many of them keep denying the facts and choose to suffer alone. Through his writings, Cec drives the fact that there are many survivors of male sexual abuse and if you’re one of them, you’re not alone. You can send emails to Cec and he will definitely send replies. You can also leave your comments on his blog site. If you prefer to keep your identity hidden, you can do so as well. https://www.facebook.com/MenShatteringTheSilence/ () Stacy’s Journal Welcome to Stacy’s Journal! In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. As I interviewed Cec, I couldn’t help but think, what would I have done if I remembered such abuse? What would you have done? Would you tell anyone or would you hide it and let it eat through you day-in-day-out.  Cec actually experienced a mental breakdown and his memories started to haunt him. He couldn’t help it. Mustering his resilience, Cec decided to stand up against his fears. He did research, he investigated, and ultimately  he helped himself, and he’s helped thousands of other abuse victims. I believe that this is the greatest achievement a person can aspire to. The ability to counter personal fears and use them as a lesson for your life. Perhaps take a moment to just peek at your own fears. You don’t have to delve head first into them right now, but acknowledging that they’re there is the first step. Then you can ultimately turn to face them, and conquer them. That’s all we have for today. As a mom of five young kids (5 and under), I get this question a LOT. How do we cultivate quality time with young kids (and at the same time actually take care of our house)!? Listen in to today's episode for advice from several mamas:  Listen to the Podcast: We also recorded this blog post as an audio podcast. If you want to listen in instead of reading, click play below or do a combination of both  And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in iTunes.  Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer. Here's the question I got: “Ideas for quality play time as parents of young children. How do you keep your kids busy while keeping technology to a minimum? Do you have ideas for playing WITH your young ones? Ideas for educational play? Ideas for getting young ones to play independently?” I know I have some thoughts and ideas on this, but at the same time, I am in the trenches of this myself with my oldest two only being 5, my middle two being 2, and my baby is only 16 months. So I turned to the best source: Other women and what they have found to be the most helpful!!  If you want to come over and read all the answers, you can do so here.  Reading Together:  I have found that for me and for them, reading together is one of the most bonding things we can do together. We have a new routine of a morning basket where we store our kid Bible, a hymnal, a few chapter books, and a few fun educational books. We alternate going through the books each morning, reading from 3-4 of them each day.  We keep the reading short and quick! Reading together was one of the #1 recommendations from the gals I asked. Another great suggestion is listening to audio books together. You can even do this when you are running errands in the car, etc!  In our basket:  The Jesus Storybook Bible Adventures with Waffles Hymns of Grace Hymnal The Usborn Children's Encyclopedia Jame's Herriot's Treasury for Children (this is my current FAVORITE book with the kids!) The Usborn Book of Science Activities (Volume two) Do a dance party!  This is another very popular suggestion I saw! And we love doing this!! I sometimes, but not always, participate in the dance party. But it's such a fun way to turn around the attitude in the home, especially on a cranky day. Or to get people moving and to have a little fun together!  Singing songs together is another great suggestion. Singing fun and silly songs together is obviously fun! But we have started memorizing more hymns together. I love that we can all sing them together and they are learning them for Sunday morning worship.  We have been using the new hymnal from the Master's Seminary: Hymns of Grace. Jason got it at a recent conference he went to and we love it!  Impromptu dance party in the living room!! Rotate Toys & Keep it special!  I did this a few years into my parenting journey when I was frustrated with them not playing with their toys. So I took older moms advice and cleaned out half their toys. These toys went into the shed and about 6 months later I remembered I did this. So I packed up all their current toys - and then brought the long forgotten ones out and it was like Christmas day!!  Shelley had a great tip: "Sometimes I would set up the toys in a fun way before my kids got up (train tracks or a farm or whatever). They usually jumped right into playing as it looked more interesting than the usual buckets of toys that they had to set up. Another thing my kids loved was to take a bucket of water and some paint brushes and “paint” the deck outside."  Or just play in a box!! ;) That will keep them super busy as well! Let them come alongside you during the day I'm just gonna be honest - I have a lot of stuff to do throughout the day. The laundry is never done, the dishes are always piling up, and they always.want.to.eat!! So a lot of my day is spent doing necessities.

James Herriot inspired at least two generations of children to become large animal vets. Tom Hume was one such wide-eyed youth. He recognised a desire to be intimately connected with nature and to understand how it functions. He then had the foresight to nurture that desire, channeling it towards his ultimate goal.  Its rare to be able to speak to someone so in love with their work. It’s doubly rare for that person to be at the very top of their game. Aside from being every mother-in-law’s dream, Tom is by all accounts an excellent vet. Hopefully you will enjoy our chinwag!

James Herriot's books about life as a country vet in the 1970s sold 60 million copies worldwide. Later many of the stories were made into feature films and a very popular TV series, 'All Creatures Great and Small'. Herriot's real name was James 'Alf' Wight, and he was known as 'Alf' by local people. He practiced as a vet in Thirsk, a small market town just a few miles from the North York Moors, as did his son, Jim Wight. Felicity Evans visits 'Herriot Country' to meet Jim Wight and talk about his father, the changes there have been in veterinary practice since the 1940s and the legacy 'James Herriot' left both the town and the local farming community. Jim Wight takes Felicity to the old surgery in 23, Kirkgate, Thirsk where Alf served the local community as a vet, initially working with Donald Sinclair, who became Siegfried Farnon in the books. Jim lived here until he was ten and later when he followed his father into the practice, it was also his place of work. Now it's 'The World of James Herriot Museum', where the rooms are lovingly preserved and visitors can see the old dispensary and the veterinary instruments used in the post war era. The visit brings back many memories for Jim including sharing some of the humorous stories that made his father's books so famous. The farming industry has also changed since Alf Wight's time and Felicity visits John Bowes and his son Jonathan, one of the few remaining dairy farmers now left in the area who remember Alf Wight's visits. She also meets the Town's Mayor, Janet Watson who talks of the 'Herriot effect' on business in the town and proudly shows her the newly laid cobblestones in the Market Square and the restored town clock. Felicity ends her visit to Thirsk by observing a veterinary consultation at the Skeldale Veterinary practice. Peter Wright talks about the loss of many family run farms who kept livestock which has given way to a veterinary practice that is now dominated by small animals. Happily both Peter and Jim Wight believe that the changes, particularly in disease control, are very much for the better. Producer: Sarah Pitt.

Let’s chat about some of the other coins you can buy. Firstly, why did other coins started appearing, and how do you know which coins are good to buy? ·       Don’t buy coins based on hype ·       Determine why you believe in the product, the same way you would invest in the stock exchange ·       Raiblocks has a good real world use as a comparison ·       Always diversify your portfolio ·       There are secrecy coins that a lot of people value as well [6:22] OK so Blockchain is the underlying technology is most of these coins, I’ve heard of a new type of coin called Raiblocks, does this still use Blockchain or what makes it different? ·       Raiblocks use a lattice which is different to Blockchain which takes multiple verification steps. ·       People who are miners will get paid to verify transactions ·       The lattice that Raiblocks uses is a different technology which is complicated ·       Blockchain is an immutable ledger of events which has a strong value proposition [11:31] I always tell people that diversifying is important, from what I understand if your portfolio you’ve managed to diversify your coins. Can you tell our listeners a bit about why they should diversify and give an example? ·       Getting an assortment of the following: ·       Bank backed currencies- e.g. ripple & stellar lumen ·       Traditional cryptocurrency- Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum ·       Cryptotokens- Kucoin shares, CosCoin, B2Btoken ·       Token that gives you access to a platform- Vibe, FunFare, Kimcoin ·       Digital lending platforms- Etherlend ·       You could also put money into an ICO, but they’re just an idea (much higher risk) [19:10] Do you think the days are coming where you will get paid in cryptocurrency? ·       Already happening, in Denmark (don’t quote me) half of your salary can get paid in Crypto [25:17] When the next recession/global financial crisis does happen, do you think cryptocurrency will be adopted instead of gold? ·       Nothing stops people from carrying around their laptop with their tokens inside ·       It’s almost as physical as gold, albeit digital ·       It takes electricity, effort and hardware to make coins ·       It comes down to adoption [28:45] Ok so let’s chat about what to do in a crash – I believe there is a coin called Tether that is linked to the USD? Should people rather move their money into tether instead of liquidating during a crash? ·       You don’t want to liquidate your portfolio, however there is a mass migration in China and a red envelope tradition where you give people money ·       Fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) caused people to start selling and a vicious downtrend Sponsors [30:30] Chain of Wealth– Head over to chainofwealth.com/crypto loads of great information to teach you everything about cryptocurrencies. He’s is currently the managing director of a pharmaceutical company and is in charge of the firms corporate cryptocurrency portfolio. He’s an experienced trader dealing with both stocks and cryptocurrency. Welcome Dominic! Round 3- [2:8] Ok let’s chat about mining today. Loads of people have made a ton of money when they started mining bitcoin. So firstly, what is mining and secondly is it still a thing that people still making money off it? ·       Mining is getting paid to verify transactions ·       Kind of like a jury that works to audit the blockchain ·       Every time it happens you get paid ·       In terms of profitability, there are loads of calculators available, it’s profitable, that’s why people do it ·       New tech called Burst maps the free space on you hard drive & it’s eco friendly ·       There is a big difference between mining and minting, in minting you put down your own coins as proof of stake so you won’t do false verifications [7:39] With the increased computing power and complexity of the transactions that are being verified, what happens if there are not enough miners verifying transactions? ·       If that happens to Bitcoin they will need to change to a proof of stake system ·       There should be such mass adoption that your wallet should automatically do it, but at this point the tech is not developed right now [8:52] So mining is verifying transactions, what about Raiblocks, from what I understand there is no need to verify transactions? How does Raiblocks differ? ·       The transaction is being verified but it’s happening very quickly ·       Tech is new and difficult to explain ·       The lattice structure allows the transaction to verify much faster [14:26] What would be some of the next steps someone could take to start investing in crypto? What coins do you currently hold? ·       Etherlend ·       CosCoin ·       Stellar Lumen ·       Ripple ·       Kucoin Shares ·       Vibe ·       Sonum ·       Neo ·       Funfare ·       Doubtem ·       Steam ·       Burst ·       Etc. J [17:47] Cryptocurrencies- the word crypto means encrypted and secure. Let’s chat about security of cryptocurrency, what would you recommend? ·       Plan to hold in the long run, it’s a much better return ·       Buy an external wallet, make sure it’s not second hand ·       You can back it up and be very safe ·       Don’t be lazy and leave it on the exchange ·       2FA, Google Authenticator etc. Sponsors [21:50] Chain of Wealth– Head over to chainofwealth.com/crypto loads of great information to teach you everything about cryptocurrencies.
