This week we're screaming the praises of Martin McDonagh's “The Banshees of Inisherin”! Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are perfectly cast (and dressed, in those sweaters!) as best friends navigating a sudden breakup that gets increasingly grim, morphing from Irish folklore to Greek tragedy by the end. Kerry Condon is our ring-side proxy for this battle as the Best Supporting Sister Who Stays, while also navigating her own internal battle over her future on Inisherin (and sporting a stunning yellow coat of her own). We have lots of feelings about dear Jenny the donkey, to say nothing of Colin Farrell's eyebrows, and a hell of a time pronouncing all of these Gaelic names. Laughably low in concept, Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin is, on the surface, about a simple man living on a small Irish isle when his lifelong best friend abruptly and inexplicably decides he doesn't want to be friends with him anymore. From a writer-director who has yet to make a bad movie, McDonagh's fourth feature is, as expected, much deeper than its pretext.

James Cameron-Wilson looks at a UK box office that still appears in less than robust health, despite the arrival at #1 of Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson. This DC comic spin-off, however, James found plodding and lacking in humour. He was more enthusiastic about #2, Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin, reuniting Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson from McDonagh's earlier film In Bruges. With Emily and The Last King dropping out of the top ten, James advises people to look out for Swedish Palme D'Or winner Triangle of Sadness. Learn more about your ad choices.
